It’s scientifically proven that learning a second language brings clear cognitive and neurological benefits, which are even more emphasized if this process starts at an early age. Although learning multiple languages has become easier and more accessible, many people are still unaware of the benefits of having these skills; certain schools still fail to implement bilingual programs in their curriculum.

Today’s guest, Dr. Janet Mercado, will tell us how she is helping people and schools become more aware of the advantages of being bilingual by working on a research on the effects of learning a second language starting from an early age. 

Dr. Mercado is a project coordinator for the English learner study at the University of California, Irvine. She coordinates a federally funded longitudinal study investigating the cognitive and language development of 211 participants. This role includes creating and implementing data collection procedures, analyzing data and reporting findings, adapting measures, training personnel on project-related activities, and maintaining strong relationships with her research community. Facing a challenging year due to the pandemic, Dr. Mercado ensured that the project continued by coordinating virtual data collection and implementing innovative online protocols.

What Latina trailblazer has inspired you? As Latinas, it is so important to see ourselves represented in successful positions and have the confidence that we can achieve or be anything we want in life. 

The book Grandes Dreamers, written by Argelia Atilano and illustrated by Anna Alvarado, is a children's book that covers the stories of twelve Latina trailblazers who have accomplished incredible careers and reached groundbreaking milestones. It’s invaluable for our children to be empowered when they see Latinas accomplishing their dreams. 

In this episode, I am joined by three amazing women, Rose Ann Djelmane, Anna Alvarado, Argelia Atilano. Rose Ann is SVP Neighborhood Lending Production Manager for a national bank and an accomplished senior manager with diverse management experience. Argelia was the leading female voice of El Show de Omar y Argelia on K-Love 107.5 FM in Los Angeles, California for a total of 20 years until its recent end. Anna is a Latinx artist and storyteller with her paintings and drawings that capture her experience as a Latinx woman in the US. Together, these three women have written, illustrated, and created the children’s book Grandes Dreamers.

What better way to celebrate and say thank you to my family in the week of Thanksgiving than having my Brothers tell their success stories as new business owners. Life is challenging, but we need to remind ourselves to rejoice in every small thing that happens to us and always be thankful for what the universe brings in our direction.

Today’s guests, Raul Tapia Jr. and Erik Tapia, will tell us how they decided to open a brewing company and which was their journey with both the challenges and sucess they had to face. 

Raul Tapia Junior is the Vice President of Operations for not only Tapia Brothers but for Kitchen cuts. Jr. came on board full time in 2000 at the company, and he oversees and is part of all the daily activities of the Tapia brothers. And with 15 years of experience in purchasing and impeccable management skills, Jr is an essential component to the top of your brother's team. Eric Tapia is the vice president of sales for Tapia Brothers and Kitchen Cuts. In 2011, he became the general manager of our Phoenix division, which he oversaw and opened himself into 2006. Erik came back to LA, and he came over to work at the Maywood office as the vice president of sales, and now is in charge of key accounts.

When Raul Tapia came to America in 1969 from Barreras, a small town in Mexico, he was 18 years old, and the original plan was to work for six months and then go back. Luckily, he didn't follow his initial plan, and today, over fifty years later, he is one of the owners of a successful food service and distribution company, Tapia Brothers Co. 

After proving himself as an excellent salesman, Raul joined forces with his brothers, and they started selling products from the Los Angeles Produce Market door to door. Their operation grew, and one year later, Tapia Brothers went from selling from a truck to acquiring a 7000 square foot warehouse. Today, Tapia Brothers Co has four distribution centers and operates in eight states. 

In this special episode, I interview Raul Tapia, my father. He kindly shared the story of him and his family coming to the States chasing a dream of progress and a better life, which they largely achieved. We talk about the meteoric growth of his company, how tough it was for him to move to America at such a young age, what kept him moving forward, and how the pandemic affected the business. We also talk about creating their own USDA processing plant called Kitchen Cuts and much more.

Despite the conversations and awareness about mental health increasing day by day in our society, there are still a lot of stigmas associated with it. One of the biggest ones is the reluctance to ask for professional help when needed the most. Many people are afraid of other people's judgment when it comes to going to therapy, a trend that needs to stop. Asking for professional help is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of self-love, self-care, and strength. 

Today’s guest, Jessica Tapia, will tell us why she decided to retire from her successful career as a banker and the repercussions on her mental health when she found herself in one of the most vulnerable moments of her life, doing IVF treatment. 

After a decade-long career as a banker both in public and private institutions that kept her away from home for long hours every day, Jessica Tapia decided it was time for her to make a change. This was the moment when she chose to retire to focus on being a mom. Now Jessica is a stay-at-home mom of two beautiful kids, and she is focusing on her and her family's well-being without the pressure of a full-time working schedule. This transition was full of ups and downs, but Jessica found her own way to get past the obstacles and thrive as a beautiful human being learning how to stand in her loneliness.

Today, I'm joined by an amazing woman, Adriana Palomares. Adriana is the founder of La Mezcalera Inc, a space that educates consumers about the history and culture of Mezcal while also recognizing the very significant roles women play in the world of Mezcal. However, Adriana hasn’t always been a change-maker in the Mezcal industry. Back in 2013, she was working as a lawyer with a grueling schedule but a hefty paycheck. Adriana knew there was a more fulfilling career out there and in 2014, she quit her job, and with nothing but two pieces of luggage, moved to Guanajuato, Mexico. Adriana began to learn the ins and outs of Mezcal, from the end to end process to the underappreciated influence of the women within the industry. 

Throughout this episode, Adriana tells the beautiful story of her family’s journey to America from Mexico, the challenges she faced as a lawyer, why she decided to move back to Mexico and pursue mezcal and love, what’s to expect in her upcoming novel, and so much more. When I created this podcast, I intended to empower women by giving them some valuable tips and inspiration on navigating their lives even in the most challenging and stressful moments. Many positive changes happened in our society regarding how women are seen and perceived, but there is still a long way to go. I know women who still struggle to feel accepted and supported. This is why I believe women’s empowerment is critical in this time of history. Now more than ever, we need people who champion women’s empowerment, and it makes me so happy when I find someone who shares this same belief with me and is actively trying to create change.

Arabella Passeri is a young model, actress, and entrepreneur who grew up with a supportive mother who taught her how to meditate, ground herself and focus on her emotions and needs. Arabella internalized these skills and created a clothing line to empower other women and share her learning. Thinking big and making change is definitely sometimes that describes her goals very well. Arabella’s bright and successful future awaits her.

Today, I'm joined by the incredible Rachel Barbosa. Rachel serves as the City Manager for the City of South El Monte where she oversees all city departments. Raised in San Gabriel Valley, Rachel was a child from a once homeless family and has grown into a strong young woman and overcame the challenges of teen parenthood. Today, Rachel brings a fresh, diverse perspective as City Manager to help change the systemic issues within government. Rachel’s role as City Manager includes the development and implementation of city-wide and departmental goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and priorities, while also making recommendations for the solution of various management challenges in the city.

Throughout this episode, Rachel vulnerably shares the story of her husband’s passing, the incredible way she worked to become City Manager, how she brings a unique perspective within her work, and why women are stronger than we know. Outside of her work, Rachel is involved in the Latina Golfers Association, where she recently received the annual inspiration award for enhancing the lives of girls and women by inspiring them to use golf as a business tool and as a fairway to education.

In March 2020, our lives took an unexpected turn. Covid 19 forced us to change our habits and social lives so suddenly we couldn’t even mentally prepare. For my family, everything started with the cancellation of my daughter’s birthday party. As a mother, I felt powerless and sad I couldn’t make my daughter happy. Dealing with the restrictions was hard, but understanding how to navigate all the other consequences Covid brought with it was even more so.

I lost my ex-assistant and dear friend of mine not so long ago, soon after taking her second dose of the Covid vaccine. Her name was Leonora Uribe, and she was a beautiful and bright soul. Her death struck a delicate chord inside of me; I felt that sensation of powerlessness again, now stronger than ever. She truly believed that taking the vaccine would have helped save other people’s lives as many others did, but she lost hers in the end. Her story made me think about how we can make the best choices for our families and us in such complex times as the one we live in.

As a lawyer, I genuinely think that looking at our past and our previous laws, in particular, can be a perfect way to start a critical analysis of this turbulent time and find a direction to move forward. In this episode, I will share my law discoveries and how the divine guides me all the time, allowing me to see through even the darkest times.
