Joburg has passed a new by-law forcing homeowners and businesses to apply for permission before installing CCTV cameras facing public spaces like streets and pavements. The City says it’s about privacy and data protection, but OUTA disagrees, calling it unconstitutional and an overreach of power. Critics argue it could weaken crime prevention and unfairly police private property. Legal battles are already underway to have the by-law scrapped.
