In the 1790s, land speculation was one of the main ways to build your wealth. But speculation was not for the feint of heart. Cheating, theft, influence peddling, bribery, corruption, and a host of other crimes, were sometimes necessary to obtain and retain those land claims. All of that was readily apparent when Georgia tried to sell its western lands along the Yazoo River.
