To the Christian, the Bible is the very Word of God and is the ultimate guide for our life.  If you are a Bible reader, you have probably run into parts of the Bible that seem complex, confusing, or controversial.  Like me, you may have a tendency to "skip over" books like Numbers (after all, I'm definitely not a math guy). 

Well, today I’ve invited some friends of mine to join us to discuss those very things. 

Jimmy Needham is a critically acclaimed recording artist and pastor.  He has always been drawn to things others overlook. His wife, author, and speaker Kelly Needham is a Bible teacher at heart.  The Needhams have four children and another on the way!

Life is a gift from God.  Most of us will experience or have already experienced, the death of someone very close to us.  It is in those moments that we are faced with the reality of our own mortality. Unless Jesus returns in our lifetime, we too will leave this world.  The decisions we’ve made in this life will determine our eternity—actually, it comes down to just one decision.  Am I living for myself, or am I living for Jesus?

Matt Accurso experienced what no husband or father wants to experience.  Matt lost his wife, Lauren, during the birth of his first son, baby Matthew.  Then, just 17 days later, he would also lose his son.

In those moments, Matt’s foundation was shaken to the core.  Up to that time, Matt had trusted in God.  He trusted that God cared for him and his family. He trusted that God held them in His hand, and he trusted that God’s ways were higher than his own ways.  Still, he was at a crossroads.  Would he continue to trust God and believe that He still loved him, or would he turn away?

Today, I’m joined by Matt Accurso and his pastor, Matt McCloghry.  Even through the deep loss in Matt’s story, you will find that this is still very much a Conversation of Hope.

This past week, I sat down with one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriters, Steven Curtis Chapman. We discussed Alabama football (or cheerleading), adoption, the challenges of life and the true HOPE we have in Jesus Christ, and we talked about his upcoming brand new album, "Still", available on October 14th.

Steven has spent the last 35 years writing and performing genre-defining songs that shaped a generation. With a staggering 49 Number 1 singles in his catalog, he is the most awarded artist in Christian music history, winning 59 GMA Dove Awards, five GRAMMY Awards, an American Music Award, and selling more than eleven million albums with ten RIAA-Certified Gold or Platinum albums.

In short, Steven Curtis Chapman is synonymous with contemporary Christian music. After so much success, some might think recording a new album would be second nature. But for Steven, starting a new chapter wasn't so easy. The ever-present inner critic whispering "can he do it again?" made the hitmaker question whether making
new music was the right move.

When I was about 9 or 10 years old, my parents bought me a little guitar and signed me up for guitar lessons.  I was pretty excited at the thought of being able to play, not realizing that it would take years of practice to be good enough to call it music.

Although I continued to play, lessons lasted about 2-3 years.  I remember having to press so hard on the strings to get a decent sound. Those steel strings felt like they were cutting into my fingers. My songs sounded nothing like those on the radio. It was so frustrating.

If you have ever played an instrument you probably can relate.  Well, imagine trying to play the guitar or the piano without fingers. Imagine playing without hands.  How about no arms?

Today’s guest not only plays guitar and piano, but he functions normally through life without arms.  His name is George Dennehy.  I met George at an adoption event years ago and was inspired by his story of being born without arms in an orphanage where he was severely malnourished. His adoptive parents encouraged him to learn to play instruments.

He was actually so impressive on the guitar that the Goo Goo Dolls heard him playing on YouTube back in 2012 and invited George to join them onstage during a concert to play their song, “Iris.”

Today, George speaks across the nation about overcoming obstacles and his faith in Jesus Christ. His story also includes being adopted from a Romanian orphanage and growing up in a large family of adopted children.

Hebrews 4:16 is a great reminder that we can accomplish more than we sometimes think because God is always there to help.

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Challenges will always be there, but if we can tackle them knowing that we don’t need to do it in our own strength, they don’t seem so big. And if you think your next challenge is too big, grab a guitar and try to play it with your toes. It can be done!

Christopher Yuan, the son of Chinese immigrants, discovered at an early age that he was different. He was attracted to other boys. As he grew into adulthood, his mother, Angela, hoped to control the situation. Instead, she found that her son and her life were spiraling out of control—and her own personal demons were determined to defeat her.

Christopher was to follow in his father’s footsteps to become a Doctor of Dental Surgery, however, just before graduation, Christopher dropped out of college. His life was centered on his homosexual lifestyle, and he became the go-to drug dealer in the area. 

After years of heartbreak and confusion, Angela began to see her prayers answered in Christopher’s life.
 
Today, Dr. Christopher Yuan speaks at college campuses, conferences, and in churches, along with his mother, Angela.  He graduated and taught at Moody Bible Institute, receiving his Doctorate of Ministry in 2014.

He has co-authored a memoir with his mother, called “Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son’s Journey to God. A Broken Mother’s Search for Hope”, which has sold more than 100,000 copies. His newest book, entitled “Holy Sexuality and the Gospel: Sex, Desire, and Relationships Shaped by God’s Grand Story” was released in 2020.

Trent Taylor experienced sexual abuse, neglect, and domestic violence during the first half of his childhood. He traveled a horrific journey through the foster care system until he was adopted at the age of 9.

After healing from his traumatic past, Trent, who is now 21, has devoted his life to helping others overcome past trauma by providing hope.

Trent, who could have easily become another statistic, became a published author after co-authoring his autobiography, "Shattered No More," about his time in foster care. Since that time, he has donated the proceeds of his book back to charity. In addition, he recently released his second book titled "Battling the Invisible Enemy" which was written for teens who have experienced trauma.

Trent is also involved in foster care reform at the national level and hopes to positively impact the trajectory of the foster care system for the children and teens in care.

He is currently pursuing his degree in clinical counseling and plans to become a trauma consultant, but has already studied trauma extensively through college coursework, outside training, and the Orphans and Vulnerable Children Essentials course through the Christian Alliance for Orphans. He is also a practitioner in Trust-Based Relational Intervention through the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development. Alongside his mom, who is also a practitioner, Trent considers it a blessing to serve families by showing them the true healing that is found in God.

Trent also serves as co-founder and CEO for Watch Me Rise, which is a ministry devoted to working on behalf of children who have experienced trauma as he once did.

He felt unwanted, unloved, unvalued, and didn’t believe he had a purpose in life. Today’s guest is a friend whose story exemplifies the purpose of this podcast—Hope.

This episode is for anyone out there who has ever believed that they just didn’t measure up or fit in. Most of us have had experiences like that in our childhood, but it’s not just children who struggle with self-worth.  As adults, we are supposed to have it all together, right?  We can’t appear weak, uncertain, or that we don’t have a place in society.

The truth is, most of us have areas in our lives that we don’t want to talk about.  Maybe it is secret sin or simply that we don’t want people to know the truth—that we really don’t have it all together.  In fact, if we were honest some of us would say that our lives are spinning out of control.  We may be on the brink of disaster, but for 90 minutes on Sunday mornings, we could be nominated for an Emmy by appearing “normal” at church. After all, as Christians, we are not allowed to have personal struggles.

You need to hear this…YOU. ARE. NOT. ALONE.

You are about to hear Ed’s story.  It started as a young child but continued for much of his young life.  He should not have had to endure it.  Life should have been better. Maybe you can relate to Ed. 

I’m thankful that Ed is willing to share his story so that others can have hope. What you are about to hear has been shared with only a handful of people, but Ed has changed lives and will continue to change lives for eternity because of the HOPE he has in Jesus.

Today’s guest offers a sobering statistic that should make us all sit up and take notice. “45%-48% of youth leave the church after their freshman year in college and never return.” They never return!

If you are a parent, a grandparent, or simply a follower of Jesus, this should sound the alarm! When are children challenged about their faith, what will they say?  Do they know why they believe what they believe?

We all know our world has its temptations, but today, our culture is not only making sin more tempting but is also normalizing it.  Anyone who disagrees is hateful, self-righteous, or divisive.

It’s not enough that our kids are growing up in a Christian environment. Growing up in church and Sunday School will not give them a “free pass”!

Most of us carry around the weight of burdens we are not meant to carry. Maybe it's our past, maybe it's our present circumstances. However, God provides freedom through Jesus Christ.

Maybe no one understands this better than Brandon Scott. While weighing nearly 700 pounds, Brandon watched the TLC series, "My 600-lb Life", not realizing that one day he would be on the show himself.

It was through the loving prompting from his girlfriend that made Brandon contact the show. His life was about to change.  He had the gift of music but he was unable to walk from the church parking lot to the church building. His girlfriend had to drop him off at the church doors.
