If you do enough interviews on your podcast, sooner or later, you're going to end up with a guest who is a complete jerk. Even with the best vetting and pre-interview, some people will slip through the cracks and you won't know what they're really like until you actually do the interview (or try to).

Such was the case when I ended up with a well-known rock musician in my car. The plan was to pick him up at his hotel for an hour-long interview in my studio. And that's almost what happened...

If you go into an interview with everything scripted out, you'll sound stiff. Beyond that, you'll miss some great opportunities for real discussion. 

But if you're too lose in your interviews, you'll be left with a big mess that's more like two people hanging out than a real interview.
