When you feel out of shape, exhausted, or unattractive, it can leave you vulnerable to feelings of insecurity. So, make sure to prioritize activities that make you feel good about yourself[2].

Another effective way to build self-esteem is to keep a record of your accomplishments. Accumulate all your achievements, whether they are major milestones like degrees and awards or smaller victories like completing a challenging project. Reflecting on these accomplishments at least once a week can help you recognize your successes and reinforce positive self-image[2].

It’s also important to acknowledge your strengths and positive qualities. Write down a list of your strengths and post it somewhere visible to remind yourself of them. This simple act can help you focus on what you do well and build confidence in your abilities[2].

Comparing yourself to others is a common pitfall that can severely undermine your self-esteem. Instead, focus on your unique qualities and celebrate what makes you different. Remember, you are not your circumstances, and you have the power to change your story and think differently about yourself[1].

Mindfulness is another key tool. Being present and nonjudgmental can help you steer away from excessive worrying and negative self-talk. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, can enhance self-acceptance and improve your overall mood[5].

Building confidence often requires stepping out of your comfort zone. Exposure therapy, for instance, involves gradually exposing yourself to situations that make you uncomfortable. Start small and work your way up; for example, if social interactions are challenging, begin with small talk and gradually move to more significant interactions. This process helps your brain associate these situations with less fear and more resilience[4].

Affirmations are another powerful tool. Speak affirmations out loud, connecting with the feelings behind them. For example, instead of just saying "I am confident," feel the joy and pride that comes with it. This emotional connection reinforces the belief in your subconscious, helping it accept the affirmation as truth. Visualization is also a potent method for building confidence. Mentally rehearse moments where you feel confident and successful. Imagine the surroundings, your actions, and the positive responses of others. This mental rehearsal primes your mind and body for success when the moment actually arrives[4].

Finally, let go of perfectionism. Feeling like you need to be perfect robs you of the opportunity to appreciate your daily accomplishments. View mistakes as opportunities to learn, not reasons to criticize yourself. By lowering your expectations and accepting that it’s okay to make mistakes, you can significantly boost your self-esteem[2].
