The Penn State Nittany Lions recruiting team is in the middle of a two-month dead period after the first conclusion of commitments in the Class of 2026. With most of the class wrapped up, it's time to look ahead to 2027. The rising juniors will be putting together the most important film of their high school careers for most of them as the majority of their offers will happen after this season. With that in mind, we're getting Penn State fans acquainted with the Pennsylvania players they need to know before that happens. Which prospects are at the top of the recruiting board? Which ones are on the rise and which ones are on the radar? Recruiting reporter Ryan Snyder will break all of that down for you today.
Join the BWI Live Recruiting Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube! If you can't make the show live, be sure to catch the replay anytime on our channel, embedded in this article, or anywhere you get your podcasts.
Penn State recruiting news
Despite the dead period, there's plenty of Penn State recruiting news this week. Not all of it is good for the Lions, however. Top 2027 commit, Kemon Spell, has decided to take visits to other schools this fall. Snyder will break down what Spell told him on the matter and which schools Spell plans to visit. We'll also discuss the impact on recruiting and revisit the top reasons for hope in Spell's recruitment.
Next, we'll discuss Penn State's other skill play committed for this cycle, Khalil Taylor. Taylor made the decision to switch schools weeks before the start of his junior season. Snyder will discuss what he knows of the situation and what fans should take away from this news.
Getting to know the rest of the PA targets in 2027
The majority of today's show is dedicated to introducing fans to the in-state prospects that Penn State is interested in for the upcoming year. Snyder will review the top targets we've discussed on the BWI Live Recruiting Show over several months. Then he'll dig deeper into the region for the players that are on the bubble this year, from a quality target to a high-priority prospect. Finally, he'll review the rest of the notable players that may not be on Penn State's radar, but could find their way to the table with a strong junior season.
Lastly, we'll discuss the players who have already told BWI that they plan to attend the White Out Game against Oregon at the end of September.

Penn State football starts training camp today for head coach James Franklin's 12th season leading the Nittany Lions. On today's BWI Live Show, we'll preview the final two camp battle positions in our summer series as the competition kicks off in Happy Valley for the upcoming year. We'll also have a guest appearance from former Penn State football player and current media figure Landon Tengwall on the show. Tengwall sat down for an extended conversation recently, and we'll air part of it on today's show.
If you want to be part of the action, join us live at 10 a.m. on YouTube! We'll be taking questions from the audience during the first portion of today's show and answering them on air. If you can't catch the show live, you can always access it on any podcast platform, in this article, or 24/7 on our YouTube Channel.
Camp Starts today
We've dissected just about every aspect of Penn State football over the last six months since the team ended its 2024 season in January. However, there are still underrated aspects of the 2025 season that we'll discuss on today's show. With camp starting this week, we'll dive into a few of those topics to begin the show. We'll also outline our broad expectations for what we think of training camp this Fall.
Penn State depth chart battles: Defensive edition
We focused exclusively on Penn State's receiver position on Tuesday's show. Today, we'll wrap up our look at camp battles by focusing on the defensive side of things. The Penn State nickel position has a wide-open competition for snaps beginning today. Who are the players to know, and what do they bring to the table? We'll discuss.
Finally, we'll end our look at the defense with a review of the linebacker room. Will Dom DeLuca start for Penn State in 2025? Can the team find enough players to fill out a two-deep? We'll discuss the players that fans need to know heading into Media Day and open practice this weekend.
Sitting down with Landon Tengwall
Finally, we'll preview a portion of an extended sit-down with Tengwall to end the show. Tengwall has quickly become a staple in the Penn State ecosystem with his film breakdowns and videos on YouTube. Recently, he sat down for a season preview discussion with Blue White Illustrated. We'll air part of that conversation on today's show with the full, unedited version on the site later today.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team convenes this week to begin the 2025 season in earnest with the start of Fall camp. The team's representatives are back from Las Vegas and the Big Ten Media Days this week and will begin the team's push for a national championship run on Wednesday. Join the BWI Live Show today as we review what Penn State head coach James Franklin said last week, plus we'll finish our preview of the upcoming camp with the finale of our camp battle previews.

Penn State Football returns from Las Vegas
Last Wednesday, Penn State Football sent a contingent of three players and head coach James Franklin to Media Days. Blue White Illustrated sent Greg Pickel. Today, Pickel joins the show to discuss what he saw and heard from the quartet of Nittany Lions and the rest of the assembled representatives of other schools. He'll discuss what Oregon players think about their upcoming trip to Happy Valley for the 2025 White Out, what Drew Allar had to say in his podium appearance, how the team is the conference favorite this year, and other topics.
Between the Lines
Next, we'll discuss what Franklin had to say in detail in his media roundtable appearance. We'll discuss his comments about the team's special teams progress that he expects this year, how being an older team helps and his thoughts on having Media Days in Vegas instead of a centrally located place like it has been in the past.
We'll get Pickel's thoughts about Franklin's tone and what might be behind the words that he spoke to reporters on Wednesday.
Penn State training camp battles: The headliners
Finally, we'll conclude our look at Penn State camp battles, which start tomorrow when the team opens up camp on Wednesday. So far we've been previewing the backup and role player jobs that are on the table for the upcoming year. Now, we're looking at the top camp battles that fans are thinking about. Of course, we'll start with the wide receiver competition and discuss what we think the team will do with its top three positions, and the battle for snaps behind that starting duo or trio.
We'll also dissect the linebacker battle and what that means for the program this fall. Lastly, we'll preview the nickel cornerback competition and which players we think are battling for the 11th position on the Penn State defense.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is one of the most polarizing players on the team's roster. The senior quarterback is a major driving force behind the program's preseason prediction by many outlets to win the Big Ten Championship. Despite that, parts of his own fan base view him as a limiting factor because of the way he played in big games last year.
So, before Penn State has its turn on the stage at the Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis and unofficially kicks off the start of the 2025 season, we're taking one last look back at its performance against Ohio State and Oregon in 2024.
Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube to get a rare sneak peek into our premium content as we discuss a series of articles on the site from this week outlining how Allar performed based on advanced data. If you can't catch the show live, be sure to catch the replay on the channel, in this article, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Trying to strip away the emotion of a Penn State loss
Fans can point to any number of critical plays or turning points in the games against Ohio State and Oregon as the "reason" that Penn State lost. We can also blame the defense, receivers, or other parts of the offense beyond the quarterback. It's an impossible task, but the plan for these articles was to remove those elements and focus solely on Allar's performance in those games.
We also try to establish a baseline of comparison for Allar's performance. After all, the Buckeye and Duck defenses were two of the better units in the conference last year. We'll try to establish a baseline of their performance by context and comparison to the rest of the conference, and then compare Allar's performance to how that unit forced quarterbacks to play.
Play under pressure and within a pressure environment
Next, we'll look at how pressure affected Allar during these two games and the playoffs overall. Pressure means more than one thing. First, we'll look at how Penn State's starting quarterback played with direct game pressure, as in when a defender was about to tackle him in the pocket. Next, we'll try to sniff out the pressure of the moment. Big games create a form of energy in their own right and can affect a player's normal performance. So, we'll look at Allar's play when in a clean pocket and compare that to season averages in both situations.
Finally, we'll take that pressure data and compare Allar's playoff performance to his regular season performance.
Big Ten Media Day Schedule
Penn State head coach James Franklin will speak today in Las Vegas, and Blue White Illustrated will have you covered! Hear his comments on our YouTube Channel after he's done speaking with the media. Penn State football begins training camp next week. The offseason is coming to a close, so we're previewing the upcoming month of camp battles that will help shape the roster and depth chart for the upcoming season. Reporter Nate Bauer will also share his latest round of insight from the top people in the Lasch Football building. With Big Ten Media Days this week, we'll also preview the unofficial start to the fall season on today's show.
Join the BWI Live Show at 10 a.m. on YouTube! With so much going on, including Greg Pickel's reporting from Las Vegas, now is a good time to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. We'll have clips and press conferences from the open media session on Wednesday, plus Penn State media day next week.
Penn State at Big Ten Media Days
Penn State head coach James Franklin, safety Zakee Wheatley, quarterback Drew Allar, and Nick Dawkins will represent the Nittany Lions at the Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas this week. We'll start today's show by discussing the event and what sort of meaningful conversations can come from this week. Bauer will share his thoughts on what he wants to learn from the conference representatives attending the event this week.
Camp battle preview
Next, we'll continue previewing the upcoming camp battles, which start next Wednesday for the Nittany Lions. We'll preview the next round of camp position battles that will take place in late July and through August. Today, we'll look at some of the more interesting battles that may or may not materialize through camp.
We'll start with the deepest position on the roster: the running back room. There's no question who will start for the Nittany Lions, but who will back up Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen as the third running back? We'll look at the three or four primary candidates to fill in behind the superstar duo and discuss what each player can bring to the table.
Next, we'll look at a surprising situation brewing on the right side of the offensive line. Will offensive line coach Phil Trautwein find a way to get both right tackles Nolan Rucci and Anthony Donkoh on the field? If he does, what does that mean for the rest of the line? We'll look at the men up front to give fans some insight into the battles on the right side.
Summer conversation series
Bauer continued detailing his conversations with Penn State's top brass this summer this week. Today, we'll ask him about his most recent articles, detailing his conversation with Franklin, including how Franklin processed the loss to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl and what Franklin thinks about various positional groups on the 2025 roster.

To fill that gap, defensive line coach Deion Barnes has put out a new wave of offers to 2026 defensive tackle prospects. Today, we'll tell you more about Emanuel Ruffin and Djidjou Bah.

Did Kemon Spell remain near the top of the recruiting rankings? We'll outline where the trio of Spell, receiver Khalil Taylor, and tackle Layton von Brandt found themselves in the updated list.

Penn State head coach James Franklin has captained one of the most consistent programs over the last decade. The team was a regular New Year's Six participant and routinely won ten games during the current stretch from 2016 to 2024. Yet Franklin's biggest critics point to his lack of production in big games and the team's lack of a title during his tenure at Penn State.
So, is Franklin a top-five coach in college football? ESPN's Bill Connelly thinks so. We'll discuss his most recent article about the top historical and active coaches in college football on today's show. We'll also continue our discussion about Penn State's open lifting session with reporter Greg Pickel, and discuss the biggest What Ifs from last year. Finally, we'll dive deep into the numbers to figure out if Penn State should play more three-receiver or two-tight-end sets this year.
Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube! If you can't make the show live, you can always check it out 24/7 on the channel embedded in this article or on the site. Of course, the show is available on demand wherever you get your podcasts.
Penn State head coach James Franklin in elite company
ESPN's Bill Connelly put together a list of the top coaches from the last 20 years of college football. Not only is Franklin on that list for his work at Vanderbilt and Penn State, but he's high on the list. We'll discuss where Franklin ranks in the historic context that Connelly compiled using win above the historic baseline and SP+ ranking.
Connelly went a step further to find the best coaches currently active in the sport. We'll show you where Franklin ranks among the best in his profession and discuss what Connelly's data indicates.
The biggest What Ifs of the 2024 season and a preview of 2025
Penn State's season changed on several important moments that shaped the narrative of the team's postseason run. Pickel discussed the biggest turning points and narratives from last year to reimagine what could have been for the team's title run. We'll discuss those on today's show.
Finally, we'll preview the upcoming season by discussing how Penn State's offense should change this year, if at all. Offensive coordiantor Andy Kotelnicki's first year in Happy Valley was a huge success. The team was one of the most explosive offenses in college football last year, bringing a dangerous and balanced approach to the field. Still, fans will point to the team's struggles against top opponents and the inconsistencies in its passing game. How can the team tweak that this year? We examined the personnel-level information to determine where explosive plays were generated in the offense.

Penn State football's recruiting class of 2026 received another blow on Wednesday evening when three-star offensive lineman Roseby Lubintus flipped his commitment from the Nittany Lions to Syracuse. We'll discuss the situation on today's show with recruiting reporters Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz. We'll also use today to turn the page from 2026 to 2027 and preview the important names emerging from the summer camp season for the next class.
Join today's show at 10 a.m. on YouTube! The best way to know when we go live is to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel and enable notifications. That way, you'll be the first to know when we post content or go live! If you can't catch the show live, you can get the replay 24/7 on the channel, here on the site, or anywhere you get your podcasts.
Penn State Class of 2026 takes a hit
Penn State's June recruiting didn't go as planned, with the team losing out on all of it's top targets. Now, the team is losing recruits in July. Lubintus, a New Jersey lineman who committed to the program in the spring, flipped his commitment to Syracuse on Wednesday evening. We'll discuss what why he said he made the change and what it means for the group of offensive linemen in this cycle.
However, it's not all bad news from yesterday. Class of 2027 offensive lineman from Coatesville, Maxwell Hiller included Penn State in his top eight schools. We'll discuss which schools made the list and discuss what the team will need to do to land the next elite lineman prospect from Pennsylvania.
Introducing the Class of 2027
We've discussed the players individually, but today is the first time we’ll preview the upcoming recruiting cycle in 2027. We’ll discuss the important names to know for Penn State’s next run at a top ten class, including the players committed to program, early names interested in the program, and the team’s top regional prospects.
Snyder recently spoke with Kemon Spell and Isiaah Rogers, two of the top running back prospects for this current cycle. Spell is already a top 15 player nationally and committed to the program. Rogers is a fast-rising regional prospect, who we’ll discuss on the show.
Finally, we’ll discuss the changes to the recruiting calendar for this year. There’s a full dead period between now and the start of the 2025 football season at the end of August. Is that a detriment to Penn State’s chances of landing another recruit for 2027? The team has accomplished strong results at the end of summer in past years. Can they find a way to keep themselves ahead for the next cycle? Join the show to discuss that, plus whatever is on your mind in the live chat!
