LAUREN LIEBERMAN Lauren has a PhD and teaches in the kinesiology department. Her work focuses on kids who are visually impaired and those who are deaf and blind. She teaches adaptive physical education at SUNY Brockport. She pursued her doctorate because she felt that she could reach more people with that degree. And in teaching, she founded Camp Abilities. This has helped her, her students, and the countless kids who have taken part. CAMP ABILITIES Lauren began a program to expose her students to those with visual impairments and in turn, give visually impaired kids programs that suited them. Her program, Camp Abilities, is worldwide now. She received a Fulbright to pursue this internationally. Camp Abilities is an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Part of what Lauren hopes to teach these kids is they can make a career out of what they are passionate about. Over the first few years, she was in the red and the university fronted the cost. But she wanted to make sure the camp was accessible and not cost-prohibitive. She applies to and receives many grants which helps. Grant programs and donors make all the difference.
