Card Talk

The Hamburgler, some guy on vacation and Joe Burrow are back after another crazy week of sports.

Zach Wilson just needed 25 seconds to guide the New York Jets on a 3 game winning streak. Will Levis tossed 4 tuddys filling in for top 10 NFL QB Ryan Tannehill. Kirk Cousins is out in Minnesota. Brock Purdy stock is plummeting. (Sam Darnold soon).

There's a World Series being played, incase anybody hasn't noticed. The Tacofractor champion has arrived... how much would YOU pay for a $15k Taco Bell gift card? Better yet, how much would you pay for a patch that was worn on the sleeve of your favorite rookie? We're about to find out!

The Jets beat the undefeated Eagles. OSU and Penn State dominated ahead of their big matchup this weekend. The studio was absolutely BUZZING this week, with Tyler and Lou recording together in person!

There's plenty going on in the hobby! Topps announced the details of their MLB debut patches... and their MLB first stitch patches. The boys chime in with their thoughts.

Also, Tyler was in the mix as a Pokemon skate deck was revealed in office, Upper Deck is set to release a 2024 golf set, Leaf released "the book of love", a booklet dual Travis Kelce & Taylor Swift cut auto /11, Lexi Thompson had a good weekend and Anna Leigh Waters cards remain hot (according to Jay).

Finally... Play of the Week is BACK with a very strong segment and we do some light Q&A. Tune in for all of that PLUS details of a fun contest to win some Upper Deck Marvel boxes!

On a more somber note, a friend of the pod local to Ryan's shop, Jack Sawyer got some rather unfortunate medical news this week that Ryan explains a bit more. if you'd like to do something amazing and send him some wax to rip, details can be found here:

It was another great week of NFL action, but the injuries are piling up.

Most notably in the hobby (and fantasy) Justin Jefferson heads to IR with hamstring issues as well as standout rookies Anthony RIchardson (shoulder) and running back De'Von Achane (knee). However, there are some good looking rookies who are still healthy and might carry this class in the hobby including Puka Nacua and CJ Stroud. Can anybody take down the 49ers?

The Jets won a game while Mac Jones and the Patriots continue to stink. Lou's Astros are battling in the playoffs... Ryan is watching baseball games (even if he can't remember who he watched)... The NHL is back... Conor Bedard is set to play his first game, have you made any plays yet? CBJ and the Rangers are longshots to raise the Stanley Cup, but the Devils are one of the favorites. The NBA is also back, Lou couldn't care less but Tyler is pumped for Chet and Wemby... and he also wants to remind everybody that LeBron James is still in the league. Topps had a cool Bob Ross collab "the Joy of Baseball" that sold out in seconds. Also in Topps news, TacoFractors now have a stated purpose. Was it worth the hype? Is Haaland headed to Madrid? Max continues to dominate F1.

Finally, OSU vs Penn State is getting closer and it's pretty much all Tyler and Ryan are thinking about... let's hear some final score predictions in the comments!

Tune in for all of that PLUS one of Ryan's most anticipated Latest Launches in quite some time!

The boys are back and we heard your comments on last week's show... it's time to get back to CARD TALK on Card Talk!

The Jets looked good on Sunday Night football but (with the help of the refs) sadly couldn't pull off the upset.. but is Zach Wilson starting to figure things out?

Also, CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson are GOOD... and Panini won the first of what will likely be many legal battles against the NFLPA, maintaining the rights (for now) to produce NFL licensed cards for the 2023 season. Lou thinks Caleb Williams is BY FAR the best quarterback in this years college class, Pokemon released a collab with the Van Gogh Museum and things got NUTTY, Topps announced a duplicate Superfractor bounty... but is it all a marketing ploy? Speaking of marketing ploy bounties, the Babe Ruth retrofractor was pulled this week - as was a Mark Twain cut auto out of Allen & Ginter.

Zach Wilson has broken Lou and Tyler... and Ryan has never smiled wider!

The New York Jets dropped their 15th!! straight game to the Patriots on Sunday on a rainy day in the swamps of the Meadowlands... while the Miami Dolphins put up 70 points against the Broncos. I'm sure you can imagine what was about to happen in the studio in this beep-fest of an episode.

in bigger news, Taylor Swift showed up at Arrowhead Stadium to cheer on the Chiefs and her new (possible) boyfriend Travis Kelce while sitting with his mom. Interesting. This should be a fun one to see play out, but does it have any effect on the collectibles market? Maybeeeee.

Penn State and Ohio State both won again this week, setting up a date with Card Talk destiny in late October. You thought Jets vs Pats got ugly? Just wait until either Tyler or Ryan have to hold THAT L.

Bronny James missed practice... when will we see him back on the court? The Wemby "1st auto ever" was given away, Lefty Lefkoe and Hoodie Allen Allen & Ginter autos have some fun utility and Tyler is mad at the whole Jadon Sancho situation.

Tune in for all of this PLUS we answer some more great questions from our audience!

The NFL is officially back this week. Fire. Us. Up!

The boys are back in studio to give their predictions of how it's all gonna shake out over these next 6 months. Who's gonna win the Super Bowl? Who's gonna be the rookies of the year? What about MVP? Will Tyler pick Ryan Tannehill again? You just never know!

Also, college football week 1 was ELECTRIC with Colorado and Coach Prime stealing the headlines with a huge win over TCU... but where are the Colorado cards?! On the other side of it, Clemson laid an egg. Penn State MIGHT have a REAL QB! (Ohio State might not...) It's overreaction Tuesday, so you know the takes were flying!

THE US Open is in full swing! Carlos Alcaraz is unreal. Jasson Dominguez hit his first two homers against Lou's Astros, and the fan who caught the first one only received two signed baseballs for it... did they get smoked? Lorcana is definitely growing their base of people who are playing the actual game.... and finally we do a little q&a and give our thoughts on this CardPorn situation.

The NFL is back and the quarterback market is (as always) hot.

But what lessons can be learned in the hobby by the 49ers giving up on Trey Lance and shipping him to Dallas for a 4th round pick? Last year, a Trey Lance Flawless Shield sold for $132,000! Has the time come to stop going all-in on rookie QBs? Did that time come long ago, and people still haven't learned?

To that point, Penn State legend Sean Clifford is more likely than not to be a first ballot hall of famer, so you should probably go purchase all of his cards (disclaimer: do not do that).

Also this week... Topps announced this week that anybody who owns a Wemby Green auto /99 is invited to come to San Antonio and take part in their giveaway of his "first card I ever singed" card, picking up the tab for airfare and hotels. Is this the first of many cards that have utility? Brian Gray is out as Leaf CEO, the boys discuss who the new CEO is and what lies ahead for the brand.
