Chessie Creek Farm of Walterboro, South Carolina Inaugural Female Sale, October 11, 2025, Noon EST, at the Farm & on DVAuction.com
Scott Sell is a seasoned cattleman and agricultural professional with decades of experience in beef cattle management, research, and herd development. He holds a degree a BS Degree from University of Georgia and a MS degree from Clemson University Sell also holds multiple industry certifications some of which include Registered Professional Animal Scientist, nutrient management planner, and certified beef quality assurance.
Today, he serves as General Manager of Chessie Creek Farm in Walterboro, South Carolina, where he oversees a premier registered Angus herd of 400 brood cows across 4000 acres of pasture, forage, and managed pine. Sell’s extensive background in cattle reproduction, nutrition, forage management, herd health, and genetic improvement uniquely positions him to guide the long-term success of Chessie Creek Farm. In addition, Sell successfully organizes annual sales to sell some the farm’s high-quality genetics through registered female and bull sales.
In late 2021 and early 2022, Andrew Agostini came to me with a vision for developing a first class, top of the breed, Angus operation in the low country. Dan Ulmer and I, along with Servando Marin, Farit Guitierrez, and David Castellanos set out to do our best to make that vision come true. We took an unconventional approach. Instead of going out and purchasing 4-5 expensive donors we decided to start picking up some of the best embryos we could find, and transferring to recips Andrew already had on the farm. This was the flame that lit the fire. In the Spring of 2023, Chessie Creek and 44 Farms formed an alliance in the Angus business and to help increase 44’s Prime Pursuits presence in the SE US. Later in May 2023, Chessie purchased 30 bred heifers and 70 pregnant recips from 44. Tracy Woods, Doug Slattery, and Bob McClaren didn’t hold back when opening their herd to us, picking out some of the top matings and heifers in the herd to send to us. Many of those bred heifers are donors with progeny in this Inaugural Chessie Creek sale. In 2023 we also purchased 44 Bright Lights as our first herd sire and brought him on board. His genetics have already made an impact on commercial and Angus cattle in SC and GA, with semen sales to commercial and purebred producers. The partnership with 44 took the next step with Chessie Creek becoming a bull cooperator herd for 44. To date we have sent over 120 bulls at weaning back out to 44 to be developed and sell in their bull sales, many of those being progeny of the very same group of bred heifers we purchased from them. In keeping with our philosophy of we are all better off in life working together, we have formed a strong partnership with Black Creek Angus and Ralph Massenburg and his family. It is a strong partnership that encompasses sharing genetics, labor, and friendship that just makes this business click. The partnerships with Black Creek and 44 Farms will only get stronger in the years to come. Andrew has allowed us to grow and develop this herd to be what it is today. The trust and confidence he puts in this crew here at Chessie Creek is unmatched, and means the world to all of us. So that’s how we got here. Come to see us on October 10-11, 2025, and share in a glimpse of where we are going.
