An old poem states, “Make new friends, but keep the old; the new are silver, the old are gold.” Researchers are finding that friendships are worth even more than silver or gold. The benefits of friendship increase your sense of belonging and purpose, contribute to improved self-worth and confidence, help you cope with traumatic events in your life, and increase happiness while reducing stress.
Yet, adults can find it difficult to develop new friendships or maintain existing friendships because responsibilities such as work or taking care of a family often take priority. Additionally, friendships change as people change interests or move away.
On this episode of the Coffee Break with Sharp Best Health, the team discusses the importance of friendships and offer suggestions to help you nurture new and existing friendships.

Sharp Best Health invites back Lindsay Damoose, MFT, First Stress Aid Therapist with Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, to talk about ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and how accepting our painful emotions can help us create a fulfilling life in spite of them.
At its most basic level, ACT encourages us to accept those things that are out of our control and commit to other thoughts and actions designed to enrich our lives. Rather than feeling guilty about having negative thoughts or feelings, we learn that negative emotions are perfectly natural. When we are able to accept the negative parts of our consciousness, we are more free to start moving away from them and towards a more positive direction.
