Kym Tolson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, and a Certified Hypnotherapist and she's taken her business completely online.
Kym knew she wanted to travel more so she figured out how she could see clients while visiting countries all over the world. And nowadays she has a thriving online, insurance-based, therapy practice. Yet she is the first to admit learning to have an online therapy practice and take insurance was a steep learning curve. Because of this, Kym saw a need to develop a course to help other clinicians learn how to take insurance in their private practice.
And on this week's episode Kym shares tips for getting started with insurance panels, things to consider when looking to be credentialed, and the pros and cons of taking insurance.
Kym built this course, so you would have a one-stop place to guide you through the process of setting up your practice for insurance billing WITHOUT having to do all the research and leg work she had to in order to get going! This course is a start to finish insurance billing course. It walks you through credentialing all the way to becoming a billing master! This course is for brick and mortar practices as well as a special emphasis on taking your practice all online. And she's giving you 25% off!

As talk therapists, we all need continuing education contact hours to remain in good standing with our licensing boards - every 2 years here in South Carolina, I need 40 hours of CEUs.
My guess is that you need something similar.
Over the years I have attended many many workshops, conferences, seminars, webinars, etc etc. and honestly they aren't always the most convenient nor inspiring..so that's why I've created continuing education Podcourses.
Let me take a minute to explain how they work.
First of all, what is a podcourse?
A podcourse is the word I use to describe podcast + self study course. Each podcourse counts for one continuing education contact hour.
All podcourses include the podcast, a self study quiz, evaluation form and certificate of completion.
To buy a podcourse, click buy podcourse, then scroll down the page to see the learning objectives, presenters bio and course outline. Then click buy podcourse about half way down this screen. You will then be asked to submit your payment.
Then you will have access to the podcast, self study quiz and evaluation. Once you pass the self study quiz you can download your certificate of completion.
My hope is that the Podcourses save you your valuable time (no need to sit at your desk and watch, you can listen when you want!)
However, You don't have to buy the podcourse to listen to the podcast and get the information. The podcast is available for you anytime, anywhere. Just head to the tab that says The Therapy Show.
But if you want the continuing education contact hour, you will need to purchase the quiz, pass it and download your certificate of completion. Be sure to hold on to that certificate for your records! Your Board may want to see it one day!
And you can get your first podcourse for free! Simply fill out the form on my website and I"ll email you over a code that you can enter into checkout for a free continuing education contact hour.
I hope you enjoy the show! Happy Listening!
After about 10 years of being a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I started to dream about using my skill set in differently. I was curious about other ways I could bring in an income. My first idea was to be a contractor for an online therapy company. I applied and was accepted went through the training and orientation. And when I was finally on-boarded, the clients started to come in. I quickly built up a full schedule as a part time counselor. I enjoyed the work yet I was on the computer and my phone A LOT. I was missing time with my family and it finally hit me that I didn't want to trade my precious family time for work anymore.
I decided to resign after about 9 months. I had my time back but I didn't have the money! And being a little burnt out, I decided the extra income would need to come from something else, not therapy related. I began to look at my other interests of fitness, living an active lifestyle, my love of active wear...and I found something new that would challenge my skills.
This time around I was able to work this business in the pockets of my days and have quality time with my family. (If you're curious to learn more about this opportunity then head to lisamustard.com, click on active wear.)
But it also got me thinking of other ways to build passive or residual income like affiliate marketing, podcast sponsorships and speaking engagements. I didn't know much about these things so I turned to my friend Joe Sanok of Practice of the Practice. He's been able to create additional streams of revenue through affiliate marketing, consulting, creating conferences and speaking.
And he's here this week to talk about how we therapists can diversify our income streams and utilize our counselor strengths and skills to make more money.
He gives practical tips and ideas on getting started, ethical issues to consider, creating memberships, ecourses, and why we need to really know our audience's pain points before we even start creating products for them. Plus he shares details on his upcoming conferences and how he helps therapists launch their private practices.
We hope you enjoy this episode!
Need continuing education contact hours that fit around your life and schedule? If so, I think you'll love my podcourses. Listen to the episode at your convenience then take the self study quiz, pass it and then download your certificate of completion. Simple and convenient learning that fits your life. And you can get the first one free. Head to my site and enter your email to get your first podcourse for free.

Recently I was asked how I manage my time. Being a busy mom, wife, therapist, podcaster, chauffeur, cook, puppy wrangler,,just kidding on the puppy wrangler,,Billy does most of that …
Here's the truth - I am very intentional in my time management. I take a look at all the things I want to get done and that need to get done and just prioritize as best as I can. I do love my shortcuts like my crock pot for batch cooking, getting up earlier than our girls and getting some work done, working out early in the morning because if I wait too long in the day my workouts don't happen. I pretty much wear a uniform so I don't have to think about what will I wear to work (it's these pants, tank and cardigan..I can dress them up or down…you can learn about my favorite clothing brand, ZYIA active on my site). I just look for ways to make my life more efficient.
I hope this helps another busy person out there!

David Waltenbaugh is a Cofounder and the CEO of Root VR, a platform of therapeutic and educational virtual reality tools to promote and support pediatric, adolescent, and young adult mental health; helping children from adverse home environments to better adapt to change and ultimately become well-adjusted and highly contributing community members while also training and educating parents and caretakers to better understand and accommodate these children.
In addition to David's specific work with Root VR, he is building a network of research partners, advisors and creatives/developers to further explore novel applications of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) in medicine, healthcare, therapy, and education with Media Plural, an immersive media production and strategy startup focused on VR-For-Good.
David and I met late last year when we were both finalists in the Inaugural Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Pitch Competition. David's pitch for Root VR took the grand prize.
His mission and vision for helping kids has been crystal clear in every conversation we've had and I'm excited to have him on the show so you can learn more about his therapeutic tools and how you can get involved.
A really cool thing happened recently, the app, Hom (pronounced "Home") by Root VR is now available for purchase on the Apple App Store and is coming to the Google Play Store as well.
David is continually interested in partnering with clinicians and organizations on pilot programs in anticipation of the official commercial roll out later this year; anyone who is interested can contact us at [email protected]!
