As the cross country season kicks off, we'll be bringing on new names that you should be familiar with this season.

First up we have Faith Duncan of Wilmington and Nathan Tassey of Roger Williams. Faith won the outdoor 5k national title that may have shocked everyone but Faith.

She details her journey battling injuries, transferring, and what her goals are for the season.

Nathan burst onto the scene after his 4th place 5k finish at outdoor nationals. Having dealt with injuries to begin his career, Nathan is finally getting to experience his potential when he's healthy.

Both said they had strong summers and are excited to see what they can do this season.

As we get ready for the 2024 D3 XC Season, we take a look back at the very first D3 XC season.

In 1981, D3 as we know it began. Cindy (Sturm) Menard of Westfield State claimed the first title. She joins the podcast to recap her time at Westfield State, her start in running, and the importance of team culture.

She credits her love of running to her Dad. He got her started in running at a young age. Mix in some success during her high school days and she was hooked.

She initially went to the University of Alabama where she won 2 SEC Cross Country Titles.

Unfortunately, a family tragedy had her transfer schools and enrolled at Westfield State to be close to family. Her new team was supportive in her trying time.

She resides in Westfield, MA and is reminded of her great times running in college.

7x D3 Champion, Alex Phillip, comes back on the podcast to fill us in on his time at North Carolina.

While the transition to D1 looked easy, Phillip tells us how hard he had to work to get the results that he saw.

He brings a great perspective on how hard the pursuit to greatness can be and how important is to believe in yourself.

Phillip recalls the fall at the National Meet with 900m to go and while he thought he had a chance, he was proud to put himself in position.

Jenna Melanson was the last one in at the Trials for the Steeplechase. She made the most out of her opportunity.

After a trying season of trying to get an Auto Qualifying, she was grateful to be around the stars of the sport on the starting line.

An MIT grad, Jenna experience a few set backs and refound her love for the sport during COVID.

She used her grad season eligibility at the University of British Columbia where she won a Steeple national title and lowered a PB down to 10:13.

She goes in-depth on her balance of getting her Ph.D while chasing elite times.

This week we're excited to welcome Stockton University alumnus, and Diadora USA CEO Bryan Poerner to D3 Glory Days.

In this far ranging conversation, we explore how Bryan's roots in the 90's punk and hardcore music scenes eventually led to the corner office of a major global running brand. Bryan is passionate about creativity, and actively explores the intersections of culture, art, music, and athletics.

In this hour we explore how interests which at first can seem incompatible, can actually be complimentary, and lead you down a path of fulfillment in multiple endeavors.

Bryan would go from cross country practice to playing shows. He realized the difference between the two groups of friends. He took a chance on himself by going all in on running for two years and shares the lessons he learned from it.

Now leading Diadora USA, he fills us in how staying authentic is what drives Diadora. They’re not actively trying to be the biggest, but the best.

Lastly, it’s fun to see the lifecycle in someone’s running career as he now is finding inspiration in his Children's running.

The Freshman phenom has taken the D3 track and field compeition by storm. In just his second year of running track, Alex has two runner-up performances to his name, a third place finish at U20s and a 45.93 PB.

Throughout high school, Alex played soccer as a a goalkeeper and tried track his senior to get endurance in preparation for his freshman season at Puget Sound.

And then he won the Oregon 6A 400m State Title.

He ran at Nike Outdoor Nationals and walked away with a new PB of 47.65.

He fell in love with the sport and has decided to go all in on Track. For the first time, he won't be playing soccer and focusing on Track.

He takes us through his first season in D3, what U20s was like, how he views his career, and his prep for U20 World Championships.

Megan Johnson and Caroline McMartin went 1-2 in the steeplechase from Central College. We speak to them about how cool it was going 1-2, the great year of Central College, and what they did to buy in.

The Freshman sensation, Haley Schoeneggee of Vassar, fills us in how she went from high school to being a national champion. She was a high school state champion and credits having a target on her back in high school to prepare her for the National meets.

Rainah Dunham of Ursinus College went into the Long Jump competition as the 13th seed and came away as the national champion. She goes into what changed about her training, how she handles these competitions and how cool her final jump in the triple jump to get 2nd was.

The D3 Champ is now the D1 champ.

Last week, Cheick Traore went into Hayward Field and walked away with the 200m title after running 19.95.

Cheick's progressions has been so fun to watch. He came out of high school without even thinking about Division 1 and went to Ramapo College to continue his track career.

Once at Ramapo, he believe in his coaches and bought into the idea that he can improve.

He never thought he would improve this much.

Traore credit Ramapo for his development and preparing him to make the next jump to Penn State.

At Penn State, the training schedule stayed the same which made his transisition easier. Add in teammates to train with and Cheick opened up faster than he finished the indoor season in D3. He knew something special can happen.

Cheick signed with Total Sports to represent him and will turn pro. All the information will be announced at a later date.

He will be representing Ivory Coast at the Olympics!

Today’s episode felt like a long time coming, but we’re happy to finally welcome Eric Gregory of Gallaudet to D3 Glory Days. We started this episode with a conversation with head coach Byron Moore, getting his insights on what makes Gregory such a special competitor.

Moore and Gregory have a unique opportunity in the track world to head to the startling together, as Moore will give Eric a hand signal when the starting gun fires. We also get into the nuts and bolts of coaching a bit, especially considering the length of Gregory’s season as he pursues an Olympic Trials Qualifier after running 45.73 to win nationals.

It was clear in our conversation with Gregory that he just loves racing track. Before attending Gallaudet, Eric had never left Louisiana, now three national championships later, he serves as a beacon of inspiration to the community he came from, along with the deaf community, for which is the 400m world record holder.

We talk about Eric’s willingness to take on a big training load to prepare for the triple at nationals this year, as well as what it’s like to be a part of the deepest sprint field D3 has ever seen.
