  • Storm Lorenzo Is Here - What Can We Expect?
Tropical Storm Lorenzo took a right turn and is bearing down on Ireland, but thankfully has weakened slightly since yesterday. Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather joined Dermot and Dave for an update on how Lorenzo will affect us, and how we can best prepare.
The impact will vary from area to area with gusts of wind reaching highs of 100 and 120km/h, but the west seeing the worst of it - Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry are the only counties a Status Orange wind warning has been issued for. The rest of the country is under Status Yellow wind or rain warnings.
Alan predicts a fair few photos of wheelie bins that have fallen over with the caption "we will rebuild" in the east of the country, but also warns us not to be complacent. The winds will be very powerful and anything loose should be tied down, and we will see heavy rain and spot flooding too.
The storm is expected to have passed by Friday morning, but it's looking like the weather will continue to be fairly miserable for the foreseeable.

  • Dave's World: Bad Jokes
It’s Tuesday and you know what that means - it’s time for Dave’s Bad Jokes!
Here's just a few of the classics/clangers today:
    Alison sent this one:
Going to a deodorant party at the weekend - roll on Saturday!
This one came in from Murphagram:
I asked Oliver Twist if he wanted to be part of the Rugby World Cup Sweepstake at the office and he said, "Please sir, can I have Samoa?"
    Shane said:
My sister just had a baby boy, they decided to name him Mark, but with a C. I dunno, it just sounds like a weird name - Cark.
    And Gerry's offering was:
Why do monkeys carry their babies on their backs? Have you ever tried to get a buggy up a tree?

  • This Woman Had Her Instagram Hacked And Then Deleted When She Didn't Pay The Ransom
If you use social media on a regular basis, you may know how stressful it would be to unexpectedly lose your account and everything on it.
Becky O'Haire had worked pretty hard to amass her 39,000 followers on Instagram over 5 years, and enjoyed interacting with them on a daily basis. Then last week, she went to open the app and was met with the login screen but wasn't able to get in to her account. Next thing, an email arrived from someone who had hacked her account and was demanding $300 in 2 hours of they would delete and sell her account.
Becky considered sending them the money but ultimately decided not to as there's no guarantee the hackers wouldn't just keep her money. She hasn't been able to speak to anyone at Instagram as every avenue she's tried only offers automated responses, so she has started a new account in the meantime and is working on building up her followers again. Becky is  using this new account to emphasise the importance of good security on your social media accounts - two factor authentication all the way!

  • Space Norah Is Back And She Brought A Friend - Space Mary!
Last year, Dermot and Dave spoke to Mary O'Donnell from Cork who got in touch while she was at home filling out her application for a space scholarship. One of Mary's biggest inspirations is friend of the show Norah Patten, aka Space Norah, so we introduced the two of them on air.
Mary went off to Heuston to take part in the Space Scholarship program, and since then she was accepted to UL to study Aeronautical Engineering! Mary and Nora both joined the lads on the phone this morning to give an update on how things are going for the two of them these days.
Norah is still working towards her goal to be Ireland's first astronaut, and will hopefully make it in to space in the next 5-10 years. She's also written a kid's book called 'Shooting for the Stars' that documents her journey to try to become Ireland's first astronaut.
Mary is absolutely loving her course in UL and has great ambitions to go to space one day, and she's able to spend a lot of time with Norah who works at the University.
We can't wait to hear the next update from these two incredible women!

  • Scamming A Scammer: How A Limerick Man Turned The Tables On A Con Artist
A 22-year-old Limerick student has achieved an amazing feat and managed to both waste a con artist's time, but also got them to part with their own cash!
Ross Walsh, a.k.a. Welshy, was contacted by a man who identified himself as Solomon Gundi. Solomon's email is one we're all very familiar with - he had a business opportunity that was simply too good to be missed and he very kindly wanted to give Welshy the chance to be a part of it.
“I know this email will come to a surprise to you," Solomon wrote, "but permit me to desire to go into business with you. My name is Solomon and I am big business leader looking to go into business with fellow enthusiastic businessman. I want you to invest £1,000 in my company for exchange for half business.”
This is something that will usually end in one of two ways - the email gets sent to spam, or someone takes a chance and is left significantly poorer.
However Welshy decided he would try something new, and see if he could get the con artist to part with his own money. In a fascinating story that used some key hurling code words - money would become  “high ball”, transaction was to be replaced with “short puck out”, and business was to become “county final” - Solomon ended up being the one falling victim to a scam.

  • Mind Yourself Now - How To Prevent PMS Becoming A Mental Health Issue
Dermot and Dave were joined by Fiona Brennan, clinical hypnotherapist, for Mind Yourself Now. Today we were talking about the huge impact fluctuating hormones that occur as part of PMS can have on the lives of women.
Fiona emphasised the importance of educating all of us on the impact of these hormones on the emotional wellbeing of the women in our lives.
PMS can last 3-10 days each month which is a long time to be experiencing tiredness, moodiness, irrational anger and irritability. Without the knowledge of what is causing this, women could start to believe she has generalized anxiety and that there is something wrong with her.
Fiona gave us more information on how these hormones can impact women's lives, and also gave some helpful tips on how to manage and hopefully prevent these feelings.

  • Dancing On Ice With Kev Kilbane: "I'm In It To Win It"
For years, Kevin Kilbane dazzled us as he glided gracefully across football fields worldwide. He then gave us all a lift when he turned his hand to broadcasting, before giving DJing a spin. And now...he has taken on a new challenge:
He's kicking off the boots for the skates ⛸ ...Kevin Kilbane (@kdkilbane77) will be joining us on the ice! #DancingOnIce pic.twitter.com/gyBFPWJUqT
    — Dancing On Ice (@dancingonice) September 25, 2019
With the news breaking during the week, Dermot and Dave wanted to get the inside scoop from their buddy.
The ex-Ireland international is chewing at the bit to get started and isn't afraid to admit that he's in it to win it saying, "I've got that competitive streak in me too".
"It's something to get me disciplined for a few months"
Having turned the opportunity down a couple of times before, Kilbane decided 2020 was his year to shine on the ice, but he is conscious of potential injury, "My back is the worry. I finished playing with my back so I'm going to have to do plenty of core work".
He then explains how he is going to have to juggle life between Ireland and the UK up until Christmas, and has the honour of meeting his evil twin - Dermot Whelan's 'Kevin Kilbane' (and his ice cream van).
Dancing on Ice hits the rink in January and will be available to watch on ITV & Virgin Media One.
    We're all behind ya Kev!!
