  • Niching and price increasing to create a great solo business – Val Geisler

Vandaag het gesprek met Val Geisler.

Val Geisler is ridiculously obsessed with email. An Email Marketing Conversion Copywriter and Strategist, Val spent over a decade on the inside of companies from non-profits to 7-figure businesses to tech startups.

She brings her background in content creation, customer experience, and digital strategy to her incredible clients every day. Email isn't dead, and Val is here to help you bring yours back to life.

The last six years she’s spent deep in the world of customer experience and research. Val built the content and email marketing for a fast-growing startup, wrote around the Internet about what makes for good email. She is an introvert who loves figuring out how people think.

Val started her business in 2011. She started as a virtual assistant, a generalist. The goal was to simply replace her salary. Which she did, but she also learned about the other expenses, taxes for a business owner. Slowly she shifted more towards project management where she contracted other specialists.

That’s where she learned to focus more and more on customer experience - niching.

Then she was offered a full time position at ConvertKit. So she paused her own business. After 1,5 years she was ready to restart her business but now with the focus on email in this niche of companies that use monthly recurring revenue for their business.

By talking about the development of her business it becomes clear that once she makes a choice for the direction of her business she is clear what to say no to.

By saying no to more and more leads that came to her from experience of the past, she was able to create her own blue ocean. She increased the pricing slowly but steadily. Her full day rate is now almost at $ 3.000 and she is booked out for 2-3 months for projects.

    Enjoy the insights with Val.

    Antje: Bedankt Erno!

Mijn ouders waren ondernemers.

Antje: Overheid.

Alles is goed verzorgd.

Weer gestart in recruitment.

We had a great conversation about creating your own blue ocean. How she got in front of the right audience by following a great course. Of course we talk a lot about how she increased her pricing. Why it is easier to sell a $ 3000 day than $ 35 dollar per hour.

I love how she is strict on the number of days she works for clients. She is really great at creating multiple income streams. Where the streams that makes money without investing extra time in each new client is growing steadily.

Erno: That's that's all familiar to us. We all know, like Niagara Falls,

Tarzan: Of course. Yeah. So it's a really beautiful region I lived for about a decade in Montreal, and I thought it was the coolest place in the world and nowhere else could ever live up to it. And then I came here and it's just amazing region it grows we have like it's a grape growing region. So we have a lot of really nice wines and with the wineries comes beautiful food like I live in farm country so I can drive down the street and get like fresh meat and eggs. It's just like a foodies dream it's a great place to live.

Erno: And it sounds like a healthy place as well i think so yeah so when you have grapes that means you have a lot of sun.

Tarzan: Yes in the summertime we have a lot of sun and yeah I guess all your we have lots of sun yeah for sure I mean it's cold but we also have a swine in the winter which is wonderful some of my friends when when we were younger I never did this but they would go ice wine picking like in the middle of winter when the there's like a really specific time of year I think it's after the first frost and it has to get down to a certain temperature and then you go out and you pick frozen grapes for the ice wine harvest it's a nice tradition

    Hello and welcome

Today I'm having a chat with Joel and and we came in contact about this conversation because you said not a tweet. Joe welcome to the podcast by the way. Yeah thanks for having me.

You sent out a tweet about a research or an article about how little freelancers or earning or how much they were suffering on suffering on how much they were earning and you mentioned that you know plenty of freelancers.

    That a great paycheck.

Yeah. No it was this article on NPR that my friend Emma had shared and it really painted this grim and sad and pathetic picture of freelancing. And when I saw it really hit a chord with me because as you mentioned you know I know lots of freelancers who are doing more money than they ever made in-house set you know fully employed quote unquote positions. And so I felt like the author just really missed the real story really missed you know a side of freelancing and entrepreneurship and chose to focus on the negative.

That bothered me and I I'm not sure how this is in Canada on us because you've also connected with some other freelancers or printers that also have a great business and I'm going to talk to them in other episodes as well.

But when I look at the Netherlands there's a lot of freelancers or solo printers that are living really at a low level with their income so they don't make a lot of money from the business so they sometimes under the welfare level. So.

So there is of course a site of entrepreneurship when you don't do well. It really doesn't do well for you as a person and earning money. So I think the story is of course a vision of a part of the freelance world but you bring a lot of vision

Yeah. And you know I agree.

I interact with lots and lots of people who don't do well and as you mentioned you know even in Canada and the U.S. they really struggle and you know a lot of my interaction like I'm part of a group called the corporate or club and there's some peop...
