  • 248 - Scandinavian Skies

Tune in to this week’s podcast with Andrew, Josh, Ben & Webby to find out what Josh discovered on his crop tour in Denmark & Sweden, including a jaw-dropping view from outside Josh’s hotel window!

Market Report for w/c Monday 14th of August. This week’s market report discusses Andrew’s advice and predictions for oil seed, barley, wheat, and more. The weather has been challenging this harvest, especially in the North, and with the end of the harvest near, there are concerns for certain crops.

The European crop tour proves to be worthwhile for the Dewing Grain crew, with some Scandinavian maltsters beginning the tour in high spirits and leaving feeling deflated. The tour included spending half an hour at each farm, seeing different crops every day which does not look promising compared to UK crops.

The conversation swiftly moves over to discussions surrounding global affairs with India keeping their markets closed and still not exporting rice, the country also wants to buy 9 million tonnes of Russian wheat!

  • 247 - Andrew - Here Comes The Sun

Join Andrew in today's bitesize podcast episode as the Dewing team are busy during a wet harvest. The pressure is on this week to get the crop dry and moving.

Market report week for w/c Monday 7th of August. In this week’s market report, Andrew tries to be positive considering the bad weather. He discusses his observations about the quality of crops they’ve had coming into their Cantley and Alysham stores.

Winter malting Barley has been good in general, 80% of the crop in Norfolk.

With the damper weather in the rest of the world, especially the states, the crops look like they are going to be bigger over there so the mood in the states is low. it's gone below $5 on the Corn on the deck, corn in Chicago so the sentiment is slightly bearish.

Russia is doing a deal potentially with India for 9 Million tonnes so Modi can have low food prices when it comes to his election.

There’s grain moving out of Ukraine., they’ve got a better yield than what they thought. Which is going to seep into Europe and undermine the market like it did last year.

Market Report for w/c Monday 31st July. In this week’s market report, Andrew discusses the start of August, which is usually known to be the lovely sunny month where everyone gets everything finished, but not this year. The rainy weather is making a lot of people's lives difficult, with many people combining because the forecast projected for the week ahead is not looking promising. • 245 - Andrew, Ben & Vince - Welcome to Dewing Grain, Vince!

Join Andrew, Ben, and Vince in this week's podcast episode where we welcome the newest addition to the Dewing Grain team; Vince, who is the new accountant.

Tune in to hear his story about how he became an accountant, the way that technology has transformed the industry, and even some shocking revelations including one farmer's way of delivering his yearly accounts to Vince in a bag with a dead rat!

Market Report for w/c 24th of July. In this week’s market report, Andrew & Ben discuss how tense the world is becoming, with news of Russia bombing grain facilities in Ukraine for a fourth day in a row and seizing ships, resulting in a key part of the global food chain being affected.

The price of wheat has gone up to £20, and India has banned the export of non-basmati white rice to curb domestic inflation, which is raising fears of further increases in global food prices, just days after wheat and corn prices have climbed.

In terms of the weather forecast, the rain is not stopping any time soon! The St Swithin’s folklore is proving to be correct for another year, with the forecast not looking promising, therefore causing worry within the grain trade and to farmers across the UK.

Ben discusses how volatile the rapeseed market is and expresses his concern for the quality of the crop due to bizarre hail storms which have hit rapeseed fields hard across Norfolk. This volatility has come from the heat in America, which is causing issues not only in the U.S. but across the globe.

The biggest questions of this week are “Is now the perfect selling opportunity?” and “What is Russia going to do next?”. Andrew discusses his feelings of worry, and hope and how he is feeling philosophical about the state of the current grain market, but urges grain traders, store owners, and farmers not to worry about what they can’t control.

In the farm chat, Andrew & Vince discuss future plans that they have, including possibly offering accounting services to farmers. With Vince’s expertise in assisting the agricultural trade with their accounting needs, this could be an exciting move for Dewing Grain. Tune in to find out more.

Join Andrew and Webby this week as they finally take to the skies in a crop inspection helicopter ride across Norfolk, and see if you can spot your field in the pictures in our latest social media post.

Market Report for w/c 17th July 2023. In this week’s market report, Andrew discusses his concerns for 2023’s harvest with it getting off to a miserable start. With heat waves sweeping across Italy, Spain and France, it is concerning for the UK’s crops with the heatwave heading our way shortly. Listen now to find out trading prices for barley, rape seed, wheat and more…The first week of August is a week to watch out for, with some serious premiums coming your way.

In terms of the weather report, there has been plenty of rain, and some very warm weather on the way, with a heatwave estimated to hit around the 23rd of July.

In this week’s farm chat, Andrew and Webby soar over Norfolk’s countryside, inspecting crops from the air thanks to Keith Pigott; a local expert pilot. By inspecting from the air, Andrew & Webby are able to get an idea as to what will happen next in the grain trade market, and observe how well the harvest is getting along so far.

The first observation that Andrew and Webby have is that there does not seem to be much Winter barley, but there is a huge acreage of wheat and spring barley. Sugar beet does not look good, and rapeseed looked very hit and miss. Tune in today to find out what other observations the Dewing Grain team had.The team also discusses worries surrounding the drought in Canada and how it could affect the UK grain market if it perseveres.

News has broken that a big Norfolk-based firm is now going to be owned by a Canadian firm, and listen now to find out prices and updates for old crop wheat, feed barley, malting barley, spring barley and more…

In the farm chat, Andrew, Ben & Webby discuss Andrew’s recent interview on BBC Radio Norfolk, debate their lucrative weather and market predictions and discuss The Ashes Cricket Series.

They also discuss the jet stream that has moved from Shetland to the middle of the country, which may bring trouble to crops, and move on to talk about the collapse of feed barley which is making many people cross due to the prices. Andrew is not convinced that the winter barley is not going to have as higher of an acceptance rate as we have seen the past few year, so tune in to find out why this might be!

  • 242 - Giles Bryan - Artificial Intelligence Expert

In the market report for the w/c Monday 3rd July 2023, the rain that came to East Anglia this week was absolutely perfect! Regarding the Dewing Grain Walk, we are still awaiting details for the next walk; stay tuned over on our socials to find out more.

In the farm chat this week, the boys are joined by an old friend of Joe’s, Giles Brian, who is an entrepreneur and an expert in conversational AI.

Most recently based down in Washington DC, Giles founded a software company. After living there for the past 5 years, he has recently made his return to his homeland of North Norfolk. Giles discusses the pros and cons of automation, with the aim of using advanced technology to “give people more time, and run things more efficiently with lower energy usage.”

They go on to debate the popular belief that computers will become sentient and suddenly take over, which he explains simply is not true. Explaining the development of Artificial Intelligence and what “The Turing Intelligence Test” is and how it is used to examine this new technology. Giles goes on to explain the advancement of generative AI which is extremely powerful and very successful.

We learn that the most popular generative AI, which is owned by Open AI has had mass funding from Microsoft, who are looking to develop this further.

They discuss the process of farming becoming automated through the use of data, following a debate of whether this should be artificial intelligence or just really well-developed machines. Giles explains how AI is not about replacing humans, it is about assisting as we still need people to make evaluations on this technology.

Later, moving on to the effect of the internet on the younger generation, negatively impacting their communications skills – a topic lots of us are passionate about.

  • 241 – Andrew – Harvest Is Fast Approaching

Market Report for w/c Monday 26th June 2023. Old-crop wheat has benefitted greatly from the massive rise in new-crop prices. The team are busy emptying their stores and encouraging people that own grain in stores to move their grain.

The plan for this week’s episode was to go on a crop inspection tour, a helicopter ride where Andrew would become a news reporter for the day, looking forward to being nosy and looking at everyone's crops. Unfortunately, the weather threw up some thunderstorms, so you will all have to stay tuned for this until the second week of July.

Today, as we are recording, the market has taken a turn for the worst, President Biden has announced that he is reducing the necessity for biofuel inclusion.

Andrew ruffled a few feathers in last week’s episode where he discussed his shared opinions with Greta Thunberg…tune in to hear thoughts on more opinions that he also disagrees with.

In the farm chat, Andrew discussed the key things in the market that we need to be analysing. Zelenskyy has announced that the people should get medicines ready as Russia may be plotting an attack on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

In terms of weather, Scandinavia still needs rain and this is forecasted for the coming week which will help the malting market. Andrew goes on to discuss the UK weather in more depth. Harvest is three weeks away, so the 15th to 16th of July will be when the team expect to see the first stages of this.

For those joining us on the next Dewing Grain Walk, we will be walking around the villages of Mundesley, Gimingham & Trunch on Monday 26th June at 2pm. What3words location: “feel.sunbeam.swarm”

  • 240 – Andrew, Ben & Webby – Webby Takes To The Air

Market report for the w/c Monday 19th June 2023. Unpredictable forecasts, but beautiful crops in Norfolk, nonetheless. In Northern Europe, especially Denmark is unfortunately experiencing drought problems. There is some very good news in the weather market for farmers. We are close to harvest; the market has improved. The biggest and most bullish story currently is US corn, they have had rain promised but 50% of the areas are in drought also.

In the farmchat, this week we are back with an in-house Dewing Grain podcast. Webby has just returned from Holiday and is switched on, ready for his other holiday next week. Ben starts us off by covering the current news surrounding interest rates. Next week, the Bank of England, there is an interest rate rise coming. Comparing the rise in interest rates to the 80s and it's just not the same, the scope is much more concerning. Europe has just put their inflation rates up but theirs seems to be a lot more manageable than ours. With the interest going up, is this going to affect prices? Tune in to hear the debate.

Is the UK economy in a bit of trouble? Putting up interest rates, is this going to curve inflation? We can’t believe what we are hearing, Webby is cycling into work? Greta Thunberg is sending Webby a Christmas card this year for making more environmentally friendly choices.

Congratulations to Webby and his family who are soon to be moving into their forever home!

Andrew will be attending this year as he is now on the committee as a council member for the Royal Norfolk Show for Agriculture, he will be waltzing around in his top hat this year. Andrew has had a brilliant idea this week, tune in to find out what it is.

  • 239 - Chris Hill - Local EDP Agricultural Journalist

Market report for w/c Monday 12th June 2023, what a funny old week. There is a terrible black grass problem which is making farmers rather miserable. We are receiving very hot weather over the weekend for East Anglia at last. The team are feeling frustrated with the misery of it all and trying to empty their stores. There are a whole lot of different directions the market could go in and no one knows the answer to it.

In the farm chat, we have finally got EDP local journalist Chris Hill on the Dewing Grain podcast, very proud to be a fellow winner of the Sir Timothy Colman Prize. Chris explains what a special and humbling experience it was to earn recognition as a journalist working within the agriculture community. Often reporting on the winners, Chris was stunned when he had the honour of receiving his prize, he just couldn’t quite believe it.

Chris has been with the EDP since 2007 a relatively late career change for him. Completing an aptitude exam to secure his position in the newspaper. Working for the EDP for 8 years before the agricultural position arose where he was then working as a Rural Affairs Correspondent, appreciating issues within farming from a consumer point of view to put a spin on things, making all information accessible to those outside of the industry - working to balance the impossible. The guys discuss imposter syndrome in the journalism sector and the difficulty of putting facts before opinions for journalists and the art of creating a fair argument.

Chris will be fitting tuning into the Dewing Grain podcast into his weekly schedule from this point onwards, will you be too?

Finishing the interview, we understand Chris' take on what the future of agriculture for Norfolk might look like. Smaller producers who have created their own set of values between themselves and the consumer are doing really well.
