Welcome back everyone. Today we're diving into something that uh you know can be a bit tricky sometimes when you're speaking English.

We're talking about how to ask someone about their relationship status, right?

我們要聊聊如何詢問別人的感情狀態，對吧？

Without like you know accidentally being rude or making things awkward.

同時又不會無意間顯得失禮或讓場面變得尷尬。

Yeah, for sure.

Especially you know if you're talking to someone from a different culture.

Absolutely. Cultural differences can be huge. Yeah.

And that's where your expertise comes in.

Well, I try. So, like for example, in Taiwan

哈哈，我盡量。比方說，在台灣——

Mhm.

嗯哼。

It's super common to just ask someone straight up, do you have a boyfriend?

直接問對方「你有男朋友嗎？」是很常見的。

Yeah.

對啊。

Or do you have a girlfriend?

或者「你有女朋友嗎？」

Yeah. You just come right out and ask.

對，就是直接問出口。

Yeah. But in like the US or the UK, that can actually come across as kind of rude.

但是在美國或英國，這樣問可能會讓人覺得有點無禮。

Yeah. It can be a little too direct sometimes.

對，有時候這樣會顯得太直接了。

Too direct. Yeah.

Like you're kind of getting into their personal business.

就好像你在干涉他們的私人生活一樣。

Their business. Yeah.

A little too quickly. Maybe.

So, why is that? Like what's the big deal?

Well, a lot of it has to do with I think different ideas about privacy. Like in a lot of Western cultures, personal relationships are seen as like, you know, private.

It's something that you don't just talk about with anyone. Right.

這不是一個你會隨便和任何人聊的話題，對吧？

Right. Right.

So, yeah, if you're not close to someone

Asking about their boyfriend or girlfriend right away can feel like you're crossing a line.

Crossing a line. Yeah, I can see that.

"Do you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend?" It can lead to all sorts of misunderstandings.

Oh, really? Like what kind?

Well, the person you're asking might start wondering like, "Okay, why are they asking me this? Are they interested in me?"

對方可能會開始想：「嗯？他為什麼問這個？他對我有興趣嗎？」

Are they just curious or are they just trying to make conversation?

他們是單純好奇，還是只是找話題聊？

Wow. So many different interpretations.

Exactly. And you don't want to send the wrong message, right?

Definitely not.

So, how can we avoid all this awkwardness?

那我們該怎麼避免這種尷尬呢？

Well, luckily, there are other ways to ask about someone's relationship status in English.

幸好，在英文裡有其他更合適的方式來詢問別人的感情狀況。

Okay, good.

太好了。

That are much more polite and respectful.

這些方式會更有禮貌，也更尊重對方。

Okay, lay it on me.

好，快告訴我吧！

Okay, so one option that's becoming more common is to simply ask, "Do you have a partner?"

好，一種越來越常見的說法是直接問：「你有夥伴嗎？」

"Do you have a partner?"

「你有夥伴嗎？」

Oh, okay. I've heard that one before.

哦，這個我有聽過。

Yeah. It's pretty straightforward.

對，這個說法很直接。

Way forward.

對，算是很明確的問法。

Yeah. And it's also gender-neutral. So, you're not assuming anything about the person's partner, like whether they're male or female.

對，而且這是個性別中立的說法。這樣你不會對對方的夥伴做出任何性別上的假設。

It's inclusive. Yeah.

這樣說比較包容，沒錯。

Yeah. Exactly. It's inclusive.

對，沒錯，這樣說更具有包容性。

Okay.

And it just acknowledges that there are all kinds of different relationships out there. You know, you don't have to put a label on it.

這樣的說法也承認了世界上有各種不同類型的關係，你不需要特別標籤化。

Great.

Now, another good phrase you can use, okay, especially in a more casual setting is "Are you seeing someone?"

"Are you seeing someone?" Ooh, that's a good one.

「你現在有在和誰交往嗎？」喔，這個說法不錯。

Yeah, it's very casual and it doesn't sound too serious.

Not too serious.

對，不會太嚴肅。

It's just a nice way to kind of check in and see if they're dating anyone at the moment.

這是一種輕鬆的方式來了解對方現在是否有在約會。

Okay, so "partner" is good for like, you know, general use.

好，所以「partner（伴侶）」適合一般情境使用。

Yeah.

對。

And then "seeing someone" is more for like casual situations.

而「seeing someone（有沒有約會對象）」則比較適合輕鬆的場合。

Exactly.

沒錯。

Okay. Are there any other phrases we should know?

好，還有其他我們應該知道的說法嗎？

Yes. There's one more that you might find useful.

有，還有一個你可能會覺得有用的說法。

Oh.

喔？

If you want to be a little more formal.

如果你想要說得更正式一點的話。

Formal. Okay.

正式一點，了解。

You could ask, "Do you have a significant other?"

你可以問：「你有另一半嗎？」

"Significant other."

「Significant other（重要的另一半）。」

Yeah, that sounds kind of serious.

對，這聽起來有點嚴肅。

It does. Yeah. It implies a closer relationship than "seeing someone."

沒錯，這個說法比「seeing someone」更偏向穩定、親密的關係。

It's for like a more committed relationship, right?

這適用於比較穩定的交往關係，對吧？

And it could also be used for relationships that aren't necessarily romantic.

而且它也可以用來形容不一定是戀愛關係的伴侶關係。

Oh, interesting. Okay. So, it's kind of a broader term.

喔，這很有趣。也就是說，它是一個比較廣泛的用語。

Exactly.

沒錯。

Okay. So, to recap, we've got "partner," "seeing someone," and "significant other"—three great options.

Three great options. Awesome. So, the takeaway here, I guess, is to just be really careful about the words we use.
