Don't Tell Farmers How To Farm with Jake Leguee

Listen Later

In this week's episode, Tracy speaks with Jake Leguee, a Saskatchewan farmer, in a timely episode titled "Don't Tell Farmers How To Farm."

Have you noticed an increased interest in agriculture from the government, industry organizations, and the sustainable/green/environmentalism movement? If so, you are not alone, and that is exactly what Tracy and Jake speak about in this timely and much-needed conversation.

In this episode, Tracy and Jake discuss:

  • Why Jake started his advocating journey with his blog titled "A Year In The Life Of A Farmer."
  • They chat about how our industry narrative has changed from farmers advocating to the public about food safety to what appears to be a new tidal wave of sustainable agriculture narratives and initiatives.
  • Is the agriculture industry becoming the poster child for the green/climate/sustainable movement? Is this a good thing?
  • They dive into agriculture policy and discuss a few key policies that have many farmers concerned. They start with the 30% fertilizer reduction by 2030.
  • They discuss the carbon tax and the recent bill c234.
  • Last but not least, they discuss climate change. Jake wrote a blog post title "Climate Change is Not the Apocalypse," and he shares this thoughts and research on agriculture and climate change.
  • Tracy asks Jake what keeps him up at night and what his mission is with his blog, advocacy, and speaking engagements.

It can all seem overwhelming for many farmers, like the cards are stacked against us in the conversation about our industry, work, and livelihood. What can farmers do if they want to make a difference? It's hard to know where to start. Jake shares his experience and thoughts on where farmers can start.

If you are a farmer and have sincere concerns about the recent interest in agriculture, you will not want to miss this episode.

Thanks for tuning,

Tracy
