2) Reading comprehension is highly dependent on background knowledge … so an evidence-based approach to reading comprehension is to always embed instruction in a knowledge-building context.

Bio:“Dr Jennifer Buckingham OAM is Director of Strategy and Senior Research Fellow at MultiLit, and Director of the Five from Five Project.
Jennifer is the founder of the Five from Five project which provides evidence-based information on effective reading instruction. Her PhD research was on effective instruction for struggling readers. She has provided advice on reading instruction, curriculum and policy to the NSW,
Victorian, South Australian and federal governments and was the chair of the expert advisory group to the federal government on a Year 1 literacy and numeracy assessment. Jennifer works with systems, schools and teachers to improve literacy instruction and assessment. She is a board member of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, an affiliate member of the La Trobe University SOLAR Lab and a member of the National Catholic Education Commission’s Standing Committee on Educational Excellence.”
