This episode is unpacking Pillar 4: We chase civility, not silence. We reject the false choice between conviction and kindness. We can disagree fiercely, but with respect and a commitment to finding common ground.
Let me tell you, choosing civility is usually harder and will cost you more than choosing silence. But it is the MORE REWARDING choice.
I believe I chose civility over silence when I posted a prayer for President Trump after the assassination attempt last month. That cost me followers, but I don’t regret it because seeing the humanity in someone who went through something traumatic was the right thing to do, rather than staying silent to keep my follower count up.
So how in the world do we make the hard choice to respectfully disagree while still engaging in conversation? Here’s a few ideas:
