From 320 Pounds to Athlete: Binge Eating to Food Freedom and Life Beyond the Scale
Today I’m interviewing my client Dave Williams, a high-performing attorney who went from 320 pounds, getting denied for life insurance, and binge eating in secret… to becoming an athlete, fixing his relationship with food, and building a life that isn’t controlled by the scale.
In this conversation, Dave opens up about what it’s really like to use food to cope with stress, shame, and pressure in a demanding career, and what finally snapped him out of the “I’ll start Monday” cycle. We talk about the moment he was denied for life insurance, how that became his wake-up call, and the simple steps he used to start losing weight without going to extremes or giving up his entire lifestyle.
We also dive into Phase 2 of his journey: what happens after you lose a massive amount of weight. Dave shares how his identity had to shift from “overweight guy who’s always trying to diet” to athlete, how he learned to enjoy food without binging, and what “life beyond the scale” actually looks and feels like day-to-day.
If you’re in your 40s or 50s, juggling a demanding career, family, and stress, and you feel stuck in the same patterns Dave was in… this episode is going to hit home.
In this episode, we cover:
Being denied for life insurance at 320 pounds and why that became Dave’s turning point
How stress, late nights, and a high-pressure job fed into binge eating and emotional eating
The exact mindset shift that helped him finally stay consistent
Building a plan that works in real life – travel, work events, and family life included
Healing his relationship with food and finding food freedom instead of more restriction
What it means to live as an “athlete” instead of someone who’s always “trying to lose weight”
The non-scale victories that matter way more than a number
