On the second floor of a house in Shanghai, an old Indian woman who works as a fortune teller is having a discussion with an American merchant. The merchant asked her to tell him when the war between Japan and the U.S. would take place so that he could make a fortune in the war. The old woman was reluctant at first, but when she received a check as an advance, she became friendly and accepted the offer, saying that she had the god Agni with her and that her prediction would never be wrong. When the merchant left, the old woman called a girl in the house and told her that she was going to ask the god Agni tonight.
Just then, a Japanese man was watching from the street below. The Japanese man, named Endo, was looking for the daughter of the missing Japanese consul in Hong Kong, and he suspected that the girl on the second floor was the consul's daughter, Taeko. She suspects that the girl on the second floor is the consul's daughter, Taeko. Endo breaks into the second floor and demands that the girl be returned to him, but he refuses to listen. Endo pulls out a pistol and threatens the old woman, but is easily driven back by her magic.
