Jordan LaMothe has an extraordinary family. His father is a Pianist and composer and his mother was a Harvard professor and prolific writer. They moved from Boston to an old dairy farm in Hebron, NY after his 7 year old sister found it for sale on the internet. The Farm became a place for the celebration creativity and self expression and the history of  the dairy farm informed Jordan of his personal direction. Learning old skills that were utilized in the upkeep of the farm, Jordan learned Blacksmithing and how to work a farm raising cows and chickens and Oxen. Meanwhile he was learning music and his family, they wrote and preformed a Musical about their life on the farm . We covered his life and direction leading him to bladesmithing as well as him receiving the high honor of a Fulbright scholarship to study the art of Koftgari. This is the embellishment of sword hilts with silver and gold where he will be studying in the Rajasthan region of India; and in the  midst of the Pandemic, his trip is definitely in peril. 

We had a great conversation weaving in his skills, direction and history. As I write this I realize how indelible a mark the Dairy farm made on his life. If his family hadn’t left Boston, or had moved to a suburb, the decisions made by necessity would have been different and Jordan wouldn’t have been a decorated bladesmith. What a great conversation and a talented person who worked through true adversity.

Niko Tavernise and I had a podcast called the Downward Spiral a number of years ago and now every so often Niko will come back and we’ll spiral. This is the third episode of DSP’s return and its way more fun. This episode we talked about the movie industry and all the hurtles of dealing with Covid19 while trying to make films. Niko is a Hollywood set photographer and we dive into what its like on set and how he got to work with some of the best film makers on Earth. Niko has taken iconic images and we touched on how you can have an artistic style while satisfying the needs of the film companies. Then in true DSP fashion, we started off strong and spiraled into talking about mummified remains, eating delightful cat food and giant carved wieners: perfect.

Cliff Dufton, John Erianne, Jesse Savage joined me on the one year anniversary episode and we talked about the origin of the highly decorated Modern Forge team. Joshua Prince is a Bladesmith with a deep Background in Art. His father was a distinguished professor of Art at The Rhode Island School of Design and just having that influence made art an everyday part of Josh’s life. 

His work blurs the lines between Art and craft and when we spoke of his knives it was hard not to talk about his decisions as a sculptor rather than an artist. This episode was a lot of fun for me as we looked at his work from a critical standpoint and when you’re finished you can ask yourself if it’s art or not?

Justin Morrell is the owner of Morrell Metalsmiths in Colrain MA,  and the President of the New England Blacksmiths. We had a great time talking about growing up as the son of a blacksmith and how his father Leigh (current President of ABANA) encouraged Justin in a very positive way. Chris Adelhardt is a sculptor, ceramicist  martial artist and knife maker who owns Pariah Knives. His work is exact and when he talks about his philosophy and history, you can see the connection between his past and how it reverberate in what he’s doing today. There’s the same finesse and deliberacy in martial arts and ceramics that I see in the execution of Chris’s belt finished blades that are extraordinarily hard to accomplish at his level. We discussed his motivations, told some stories and his decision to move to Texas.

Matt Stagmer was born into Sword and Knife making. Working for his older brother Kerry as a sword maker for Baltimore Knife & Steel he learned production metal work early producing swords for Renaissance fairs and acting productions. This gave him an opportunity to work with famed Hollywood Sword maker Tony Swatton and it all dovetailed into producing Man At Arms: Reforged.
