  • Embrace Your Weirdness
When it comes to marketing yourself we always get told to just "be ourselves”. But what does that mean?
Be authentically you. I hate that phrase.
What’s that mean though really? It’s a cliche, but it has some truth to it.
I call it something else: embracing your weirdness.
Ever since I started podcasting I’ve gone through stages of me trying to discover…me.
When I first started podcasting, I was very formal. Then I went weird, got bored, and just returned to my normal me.
It’s surprisingly difficult to be yourself in marketing, and when producing content. We’re always told to be professional. Don’t swear. Don’t do this. Don’t do that.
We spend a surprising amount of our time trying to please others by being something else. Stop it. Just embrace your weirdness.

  • Being good at presenting to audiences is not an optional skill
The vast majority of the population avoid learning how to communicate their ideas to an audience. Creatives included.
People avoid it for the same reasons they avoid most things: it scares them, or it challenges them.
You’ll never regret learning to present your ideas to an audience effectively and with confidence.
It is a universal skill that you will use over and over throughout your career and others.
You will appear more confident, more capable to others, and just better at your job by prioritising this skill.
I genuinely believe to be the best at your job, not just as a creative, you need to learn to be a good communicator to an audience. I don’t see this as an optional skill.
How do you learn? You learn by doing. At first, it’s going to be really scary to present to an audience. It was for me.
Study presentation skills. They can be learned. They don’t happen by accident. Study stand up comedians and politicians.
Find a local meetup, conference, or something like @bettakultcha or Pecha Kucha near you to try out your ideas and techniques in a safe environment.
Make it a priority in your life to learn to be a good orator. You can learn it, and you won’t regret it. Introvert or Extrovert doesn’t come into this.

  • Increasing (Creative) Confidence
Every young creative lacks creative confidence. This how you fix this.
Interesting Conversations Episode 2 with Bob Phillips is out this weekend!
In all my years working with young creatives and creatives that are training, they all lack confidence.
    Experience THEN Skill THEN Confidence
Confidence without experience or skill comes off as arrogance.
Increase experience. Practice your craft every day.
Increase skill. Practice your craft. Every day.
Increase your confidence in your own work by subjecting it to public scrutiny.
Increase confidence by actively seeking criticism.
You need to learn criticism is not a slight on your personality. It’s on your work. If your work is shit, it doesn’t make you shit.
Even when you get better, you still need to seek out criticism to continue getting better.
Network with other creatives. It’s easier than ever. Chat with them on Twitter.
Never hide away. You’ll become scared of criticism and you’ll never become a confident creative.

  • Who Am I To Have An Opinion About That?
Today’s episode is about getting over your fear of putting out content publicly.
Interesting Conversations Episode 2 with Bob Phillips is out this weekend!
Before I started doing a daily podcast, I was always a bit scared about sharing content.
Writing articles that were very opinionated scared me
I was afraid people wouldn’t like my opinion or me
There’s always a little voice in the back of your head: “who am I to have an opinion? Why does it matter?”
You’ve just got to do it though
    Everybody has unique value
    Everybody has a unique perspective
Everybody has something to say and share

    • Designers Should Be Writing Daily
I have a little rant today about writing and why you should be good at it as a designer.
Interesting Conversations Episode 2 with Bob Phillips is out this weekend!
      Design is communication
And so are most other forms of creative activities
Writing is a form of communication that you use for everything in your life
There’s no excuse as a designer, to be crap at spelling, grammar, etc
Writing makes you a better designer
      It’s a pride thing
      Writing helps you distil ideas
Gives you a direct feed into your inner thoughts

    • The Non-Negotiables
How can you turn something from a habit...into something you just do because it's right, with no effort?
Interesting Conversations Episode 2 out this weekend!
In a daily email a couple of days ago I spoke about a concept called the non-negotiables
These are things you complete to a schedule, no excuses. Every time.
Creatives are very focused people, and usually very goal oriented
Those goals are usually based on creative stuff though, NOT the rest of our lives
There’s loads of other stuff though: People, health, fitness, confidence, marketing
Mine NN are: doing a daily podcast, daily email, lifting weights and meditation. Journalling is becoming one, and I’m trying to turn healthy eating into one too.
I do them for a reason
I want to help people get better (podcast and email) and I want to stay healthy (weights and meditation)
Russell Brand said: surrender to a process - trust the process

    • Meditation - Part Two
It occurred to me the other day I spoke all about meditation, but I didn't tell anybody how to do it. Today I talk about that.
Back in Episode 18 I spoke about meditation
First up, meditation is something everybody should be doing. It’s not woo-woo weird shit.
The idea: to sit in silence for extended periods of time
Increasing this time increases focus, sleep, etc.
      It increases creativity
Start with 5 minutes, every day. Sit in silence.
Build it up to 10 minutes
      Try guided meditation
Build it up to 15 minutes
      Try something like Headspace

    • What Does Success Mean?
Creatives can be completely obsessed by success. Today I discuss.
I was going to call this episode: How Important Is Success?
In our Western culture, we’re obsessed with the idea of success
Fast cars, lots of money, beaches, lots of holidays, expensive material things
Success in a career: making lots of money, becoming famous in your bubble
Success in terms of fame: getting rich, people knowing who you are everywhere you go
None of that is proper success, that’s surface success
Successfully working out yourself is real success
A healthy mind, body and attitude to life and money is real success
Creatives and any person desiring themselves to be successful heavily compare themselves to others (which can be toxic)

    • How Meditation Helps Creatives
Can meditation help you as a creative person? I talk about meditation, what it is, and how it can help.
First started experimenting with meditation over 4 years ago
I never stuck at though (maybe I approached it wrong)
It never developed into a habit
It only developed into a habit after reading The Miracle Morning
What is meditation? It doesn’t have to be much more than sitting in silence and focusing on your breathing
It is NOT trying to remove thoughts, or avoid thinking about things, or trying to get a quiet mind. Focusing on this makes your mind louder
I use Headspace for guided meditation
Meditation helps with mindfulness - the idea of being aware of your reactions, moods, mental state, body, everything
Meditation helps also with living in the present - not thinking about the future or past, not worrying needlessly about things you can’t change
Meditation helps with creativity - it helps you live in the present, and completely forget about everything else around you (but it takes time to develop, it isn’t a quick fix)
Meditation helps with distractions, or rather avoiding them
It’s helped me to be more comfortable in the moment, and have the patience to just sit and do nothing, not having to keep myself amused all the time with a phone
