There is a trend towards seniors “doing” as opposed to “having things done” for them. The fallacy is that once you reach a certain age, you need help to clean your home's and fix your food.
When we treat residents as helpless, it takes away the human need to contribute to something bigger than ourselves.
Create buildings and public space to make access to nature easier. Common areas with garden pathways provide year-round access to greenery; a gazebo will offer shade in hot weather.
Community gardens create environments where people will tend their crops and then share and swap them. Beyond going out to take a nature walk, tending to plants and watching them grow creates purpose and self-sufficiency.
In urban environments, design balconies and decking off the units for individual access to fresh air and a view. If feasible, consider creating a green roof.
Technology is being adapted for less tech-savvy users. Look more user-friendly interfaces and functional changes such as larger buttons with more illumination.
