Does your store place gluten free flour next to - or underneath - wheat flour? This is obviously a huge cross contact issue for people with celiac disease. If your store does this, please ask them to stop placing gluten-free flour alongside/between leaky bags of wheat flour. Gluten Free Watchdog has the perfect form letter to send to your store manager requesting the change.

UPDATE: The Gluten in Medicine Disclosure Act of 2019, HR 2074 has gained 24 sponsors since being introduced by Rep. Tim Ryan. From a study in the Journal Pediatrics: kids who attend a dedicated gluten free summer camp enjoy important benefits. Namely, they leave the experience with a more positive outlook and self-perception, as well as an improved sense of well-being and emotional outlook.

“All seemed to benefit from camp, no longer feeling different from other kids or feeling frustrated with a restricted diet,” reported researchers in the journal Pediatrics. While all of the children enjoyed the camp experience, those who had been on a gluten-free diet for less than four years benefited the most. These children left camp no longer feeling embarrassed or isolated from other kids because of their restricted diet. Campers also learned new coping mechanisms from others in camp who had been living gluten free for a longer time.

Gluten Free Watchdog, LLC (aka Tricia Thompson) is testing restaurant items! First up, PF Chang’s Lettuce Wraps.

✅ She’s starting by testing food from national chain restaurants with gluten-free menus or gluten free items identified on menus AND who state they can accommodate folks with celiac disease.

✅ The Plan: test the same menu item from 3 to 5 locations nationwide. This testing is designed to give an idea of the nature and extent of issues with cross contact at non-dedicated restaurants. 

✳️ She understands that just because one location of a chain restaurant can successfully make a gluten-free item does not mean all locations can accomplish this. This testing is NOT meant to be an across the board statement on the safety (or lack thereof) of all branches of a restaurant. 

🙋🏻‍♀️ Want to help? PF Chang’s gluten-free lettuce wraps are first up in the queue. If you live near a PF Chang’s and are interested in helping, please let her know your location. She’s trying to purchase menu items from restaurants across the country. You’ll be reimbursed for the cost of the menu item and postage for mailing to the lab.

A gluten free Maryland boy's case against a Williamsburg restaurant will now go to the district court in Virginia for a jury trial. The boy, with a gluten intolerance, brought a chicken sandwich into a venue to eat with his classmates on a class trip. The venue offered a gluten free meal, prepared onsite, but the boy had experience getting sick due to eating and chose to eat the food he brought. They asked him to leave, separating him from his classmates and the experience of the venue. His family brought a lawsuit against Colonial Williamsburg.
