  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – The Impact Of Murder On A Family

She was a stay-at-home mom, providing day care in order to remain at home raising her own children until the unthinkable happened. A knock on the door one evening shattered her dream life. In a single moment, her life changed forever as she learned of the murder of her 18 year old son who was robbed and shot to death in October of 1991.

Lost in unrelenting grief and fearing for the survival of her family, Beckie Miller, of Phoenix, Arizona found hope by getting involved with the national organization, Parents of Murdered Children. (www.POMC.org) Using her grief as a catalyst, Beckie has become a voice for victims services and has worked tirelessly for the past 20 years providing a place of sanctuary, hope and healing for the families and friends of those who have died by violence.
Join me as we meet Beckie, an activist in grief support services, a bereaved mother, a writer and someone who has found a way to move from survive to thrive.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – GRIEF AND FUNERAL SERVICE: EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT FUNERALS AND FUNERAL SERVICE

Most of us have been to a funeral, maybe several, maybe one for a beloved family member or friend. If you were attending one for a loved one, then it was probably mostly a blur…something we did on “automatic” or as if we were powered by batteries. In our frozen or semi-frozen state, we functioned, but it probably felt like being in a fog. I knew people were talking to me because I could see their mouths moving, but I had no idea what anyone said to me. I just wanted it to be over so we could all go home and pretend “IT” had not happened.

Today is our chance to talk about funerals and the value of funeral service when we are not so “frozen”, not so numb and hopefully, not so sad that we cannot learn a little about this most valuable and important part of our grief process. My guest today is John Carmon, president of Carmon Community Funeral Homes in North Central Connecticut. John is a Past President of the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.

Come with me as we explore the funeral side of grief.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – EXPLORING AFTER DEATH COMMUNICATIONS WITH Bill Guggenheim

Have you been contacted by a loved one who has died? Have you ever felt a touch or sensed a loved one’s presence, after the death? Has a whiff of a loved one’s favorite fragrance or after-shave floated by you when there was no reason for it being present? Have you ever “seen” a loved one or had a butterfly come to rest on your shoulder, just when you were thinking about your loved one?

Are these things real or are they just bits and pieces of our imagination, or grief induced hallucinations? No matter what they are, for those who have experienced them, they certainly seem real. And they bring a sense of peace and comfort to those of us trying to make sense out of something that seems to defy logic and science.

Join me as we explore After-Death Communications with Bill Guggenheim, a pioneer in the field of After-Death Communication (ADC) experiences. He is considered to be the “father of ADC research” and has written and spoken on this subject for more than 25 years. He and his former wife, Judy, wrote the best seller, Hello From Heaven! which contains 353 firsthand accounts of after death communications. Visit his website at www.After-Death.com and find his book at www.Griefstore.com.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC & MEDITATION

I was OK until THE SONG came floating over the radio. I had to pull over. I was blinded by tears that streamed down my face. How I miss him! Was it really more than … ago? It seems like only moments have passed since IT happened. Why does music have the power to send us to the very depths of despair or to the heights of joy…all at the same time? Join me as we talk with Paul Alexander, a singer, songwriter, medical social worker, performing artist and hypnotherapist as we explore the healing power of music. We’ll also be talking about hypnotherapy and how it can help us find the “Quiet Within”…a much-needed respite from our pain. Be sure to visit Paul’s website, www.griefsong.com to hear his music and learn more about his healing work with music and meditation.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – THE POWER OF HEALING PRESENCE: A CONVERSATION ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY

Can one turn away from a religion yet remain spiritual? How can we help ourselves and others who are grieving find a path of comfort when faith fails to bring expected hope and healing? Where is God in all of this anyway? Today we’re going to talk about the roles that religion, faith and spirituality play in the grief journey. My guest is Dr. Richard B. Gilbert, PhD, CT, a retired hospital chaplain, a bereavement specialist, a trainer, ethicist in health care and an author. He is the author of Heart Peace: Healing Help For Grieving Folks, and Finding Your Way After Your Parent Dies: Help For Grieving Adults. You can find his books at www.griefinc.com.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – LAUGHTER IN THE FACE OF TEARS: HOW LAUGHTER CAN HELP HEAL A GRIEVING HEART

Laughter died the day he did. I knew I would never laugh or know joy again. There is not much that is humorous about grief. Although there are moments when we can either laugh or cry and sometimes we do them both at the same time. My guest today is very serious about laughter. She specializes in studying how laughter and humor can be used to ease suffering while grieving. Nancy Weil is the Director of Bereavement Support at Mount Calvary Cemetery and the Catholic Diocese Cemeteries in Buffalo, New York where she serves as a Funeral Celebrant and is a Certified Grief Management Specialist. She runs the only Laughter Club in a cemetery in the United States. Her book If Stress Doesn’t Kill You, Your Family Might teaches people how to stress less and laugh more. • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – CHANGING THE FACE OF GRIEF SUPPORT: ONE WOMAN’S MISSION

A long time ago, there was nothing to hold on to when a loved one died. No support groups to attend, no books to read, no radio shows to listen to. People were afraid to speak of the deceased. The silence was very, very loud. So when my guest today found herself in that empty silence following the death of her daughter, she did not retreat to the couch. Instead, she jumped off the cliff without benefit of a parachute and not only landed on her feet, but on the way back to Mother Earth, she helped to create a national support group, two magazines for the bereaved and so much more.

The founder of Bereavement Magazine and the editor of Grief Digest, this grieving mom and widow helped change the face of grief support in the United States. You can find information about Grief Digest Magazine at www.centering.org or www.griefdigestmagazine.com.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – : A COMMUNITY GRIEVES THE LOSS OF ITSELF: THE 2011 FLOODS OF MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA, WITH FATHER DAVE ZIMMER

There are many different faces of grief. Today we’re going to talk about one of those other faces…the grief of losing one’s home, one’s possessions, one’s lifestyle as disaster strikes a community and leaves behind only mud and waste…and memories tossed out in the trash.

My guest today is Father Dave Zimmer, Pastor of St. John the Apostle Church in Minot, North Dakota. Father Dave has been a spiritual leader for a long time and while he has helped many parishioners through grief, he had never had to face a grief that did not claim lives, but lifestyles, hopes and dreams instead. It is a story of harsh realities and devastating loss. Yet, it is also a story of courage and spirit and how one town on the northern prairie, came together to rise again.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – FINDING GOOD GRIEF RESOURCES: THE CENTERING CORPORATION WITH JOY JOHNSON & JANET SIEFF

Years ago there were no books, CD’s, DVD’s, phone apps or support systems to help us on our grief journey. Finding a book to read was a difficult if not impossible task. And now there are so many resources, that it is equally challenging to sort through the mountains of books and other resources, to find one that speaks just to you and your journey.

  • Good Mourning: The Many Faces of Grief – STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES: THE GRIEF OF BEING BULLIED

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” A rhyme from our childhood. A tease. A taunt. Childhood is supposed to be a wonderful time in our life. Yet, for many of our children, childhood takes on a different color…not the perfect rainbow confection we dream about, but painted with shades of grey and brown and black and nothingness.

Today we’re going to talk about a very different kind of grief: The grief of losing your sense of identity and personal safety. We’re going to talk about being bullied. Join me as we talk with a young woman, who is just about to launch herself into an exceptional high school program dedicated to aviation and aerospace. It is an exciting time for her. Yet this amazing young woman carries with her the last remnants of a hurt that occurred awhile ago, but still breathes a faint echo in her life today.
