  • Depression and Ways to Live With It.

Welcome to “Healing From Within” with your host Sheryl Glick author of The Living Spirit Answers for Healing and Infinite Love which shares stories of spiritual awakening spiritual communication healing energies and miracles along with ways to discover your intuition and to use it for creating a healthy prosperous joyful life experience. Today Sheryl is delighted to welcome Alicemarie O’Neill author of The Formula 7 Steps for Healing From Depression which offers ways to recognize and manage the imbalance. seven steps for healing from depression and manic depression as well as bipolar disorder. All illness is simply an imbalance in the body, mind or spirit and can be brought into alignment with our creative force of life for having a more positive life experience.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” are well aware Sheryl and her guests share intimate stories of metaphysical events or awareness of the fact we are more than our physical bodies and are indeed infinite soul beings gathering experiences in this three dimensional physical life to simply remember the magnificent potential we have to create extraordinary lives with our thoughts actions and a higher awareness or consciousness of Universal Energy that we are all derived from and connected to.

In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” Alicemarie O’Neill will help us realize that most humans are challenged by either an emotional physical or spiritual concern and it is not that we are completely creating that scenario with our fears and our intentions, but may have brought the challenge in along with our soul’s journey into this life. In becoming aware first and foremost we allow ourselves to begin to look for answers and solutions so we may move from fear and dysfunction to positivity and happiness and help refine our soul essence. Depression is indeed a challenging and commanding issue to deal with and understanding the nuances and mood swings are imperative to really becoming aware of what you or a family member may be experiencing and feeling during different cycles.

When Alicemarie is asked to think back to her childhood and remember a person, place or event that may have been meaningful to her she shares a poignant and difficult memory. Alicemarie’s younger brother was born with a hole in his heart and was one of the first children to undergo open heart surgery, a very new process at that time. Alicemarie’s mother who she says was quite religious prayed and told God that if her son could live she would dress him in brown every day in honor of St. Frances who she had great love for. Indeed the boy survived for ten years and then developed leukemia and passed. Alicemarie and Sheryl chose to see the miracle that his mother’s prayers had created and he had ten years with them rather than see the loss. AS many of us know we all have a time to be here in life and then a time to be in life beyond and as spiritual beings are always creating and living in the energy of the Divine so nothing is lost just transmuted and changed to adapt to other forms of living.

Alicemarie and Sheryl go on to discuss suicides which are rising at an alarming rate in the US due to many factors including depression, mental illness and the fast moving technological lifestyle that is creating many disconnections from our gentler soul based reality. Examples of celebrities such Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade, Robin Williams, Kurt Cobain, Alexander McQueen, as well as young people teenagers alert us to look at the conditions that made life unbearable for them and discover ways to help people who suffer from depression and a disconnect from themselves and others to find relief when possible.

Alicemarie shares with us that In college, her primary fields of study were criminology and sociology, and her degree included a minor in psychology. There, she discovered she was a natural counselor and began working as a mental health counselor. It was work she loved and did well, using her degree and unique spiritual sensitivities and experience to help others. In 1989, she began learning alternative forms of counseling that included astrology and embraced spiritual counseling. Highly personalized, these forms provided direction with healing. For the past twenty-five years, Alicemarie has been practicing as an astrologer and spiritual counselor. Sheryl as listeners know is an energy healing Reiki Master Teacher and medium who uses an understanding of ancient eastern alternative methods including the ancient forms of understanding that every living thing and planet has a vibration and energy and utilizing what is needed calms invigorates or causes other emotional states. Learning to feel and use energy wisely is the key to health prosperity and happiness.

Alicemarie shares her recovery and insights along the way. More than that, the real purpose of The Formula is to offer a proven healing approach to those who suffer depression or manic depression. Alicemarie hopes to encourage a conversation that explores the connection between depression or manic depression and awakening consciousness. In her experience, depression is sorely misunderstood while manic depression has become the “flavor of the day.” Yet neither is seen for what it truly is: a suffering of the spirit and a struggle to expand consciously. Alicemarie’s sincere desire is for her book to serve those dealing with depression or manic depression and she does that in a way that is most concise, accurate and offers workable techniques. Those who would benefit the most from the tried-and true method she presents need only implement it to see results. As one who has been diagnosed with bipolar I disorder and suffered from repeated episodes of the illness, Alicemarie takes liberties sharing her experiences through the illness, as well as with the vital recovery process in her book. She speaks about the illness through her eyes and experience, knowing we all have different experiences with mood disorders. Some people cycle within days; others, seasonally. My cycles lasted more than a year in some cases. It is the recovery that’s important here.

Alicemarie offers seven steps for healing from depression and manic depression and or bipolar disorder. Like all suggestions some may benefit more than others as the situations and problems are always unique and of course we recommend you have medical assistance and group or individual therapy and also energy healing sessions..all work in tandem to find unique cures for our specialized reactions to life.

This is exactly what The Formula offers. These are the seven steps which must be realized and incorporated into your unique healing plan.

Step one is stabilization. Whether we use traditional medication, alternative supplements, therapy, or Eastern medical traditions, it is vital that we stabilize. If we are seeing a psychiatrist or medical doctor (or both), it is important to achieve the proper combination of medications. If we choose a naturopath or alternative therapist, we must make sure our supplements or therapies work for us. If we don’t stabilize, we won’t glean the real value of the other tools in The Formula. We can use mental alchemy, but it is much more difficult without stabilization. We can use meditation, but the motivation to do so comes with great difficulty. If we do not stabilize, we put ourselves in great danger. I have counseled many people with mental health issues or active mental illness. I have tried to work with clients who refuse medication. I find that those who stabilize with medication or supplements or a combination thereof are ready for the next step. Their focus is sharp, and their reasoning abilities are keen. Those who refuse medication continue to do the same things over and over again, and nothing works. The help is available, but we must have the courage to reach out and accept it.

Step two is empowered thinking. When we experience depression, we feel deflated, and our thoughts reflect this. How many times do our thoughts berate us? How often do our thoughts encourage us? Replacing discordant, inharmonious, negative thoughts with harmonious, encouraging, positive thoughts is empowering. This is the ancient art known as mental alchemy. Mental alchemy has been practiced successfully for thousands of years. Affirmations can be an aspect of this practice and are used to change thoughts from disabling to facilitating, from self-defeating to energizing. Inspiring affirmations assist us in transforming our thoughts. Mental alchemy calls for alchemical actions: that is, empowering thoughts made active. Counseling and therapy are included in this step, for they also work with our thoughts. There are various forms of therapy that are interesting and successful. Talk therapy is the most common form of psychotherapy, but we will examine other forms as well. Counseling and therapy can be vital components of our healing journey and can be used long-term or for short periods, but they are not for everyone. The other tools set forth in this book provide a basis for making informed decisions about therapy.

Step three is mental and emotional exercises. This step provides enjoyable exercises that stretch and work the mind. Reading may seem like an easy task, but when the ability to focus and concentrate is limited by mania or depression, reading can be a major chore. After psychosis, having a presence of mind seems to be a huge undertaking. We will examine ways to increase focus and concentration. These proven methods exercise the mind to reap major benefits.

Step four is the physical world. We address proper diet and exercise, grooming, and sleep. We open up to the natural world and its many healing attributes. We begin to take our place as part of this natural world, and we find healing practices throughout. When we feel like a part of something— in this case the world of nature—feelings of isolation and despair dissipate. We’ll examine just how this can come about.

Step five is routines and responsibilities. Although these can aid in our healing, they are often the first to be neglected when depression or maniagains a hold on us. They are also vital to recovery. Routines can take the form of rituals, which have a powerful and positive effect on the spirit. We are creatures of habit; whatever we do habitually will work to either our benefit or our detriment. We’ll look at these areas of life and make them positive, healing sources of pride. Accountability is also included in this step. We are accountable for our behavior. When we are ill—depressed or manic—we often do not connect with our behavior. It can feel distant, like we’re viewing someone else. Because we are often disconnected from our actions, we might not take responsibility for them, or we might diminish our own culpability. In this step, we examine our behavior. We work with accountability, recognizing its importance in our healing journey.

Step six is social contacts. These are our relationships with family and friends. Chances are, whenever we are depressed or manic, our families suffer right along with us. Often they want to help but feel powerless. Usually they do not understand our illness, and they cannot appreciate our torment. Family and friends learn to keep their distance from us when we are depressed or manic. These extreme moods frighten them. That which we do not understand often frightens us, and this is true for everyone. We also want distance from loved ones when we are depressed because being in a social setting can be exhausting. Socializing and any attempt at conversation can require great effort. We prefer our own company to that of others, yet we are uncomfortable with ourselves as well. Since we don’t have the inclination or the will to engage in conversation, we keep to ourselves. Making the effort to turn this around—just a wee bit at a time—is one of the most worthwhile activities we can undertake. It is important to remember that what is necessary is healing, and action is required. If we have a pet, we might neglect its care, depending on the depth of our illness. During deep depression, many of us still reach out to our dog or cat. Pets provide special relationships in our lives. They know only unconditional love. They don’t judge us, and we don’t need to give them long, detailed explanations of our behavior. Our animal companions are simply happy to see us each and every time we walk through the door. Because they are so sensitive to us, they give affection freely. They are little healers.

Step seven is mindfulness and meditation. This step is for our long term wellness and addresses both mind and spirit. It can begin at any stage of our recovery, but the sooner we move into the practices of mindfulness and meditation, the quicker we reap the marvelous benefits. The practice of mindfulness helps us be in the moment. With mania, we are often fixated on the future, and with depression, we are stuck in the past. Neither does us any good, for it is in the present, the here and now, that our recovery takes place. We also explore the various forms of meditation. Meditation is its own reward. It is the practice of quieting our minds. With time, meditation gives us peace of mind that has lasting effects. (It is the only practice I have found to soothe my busy mind, which is a huge endorsement of the practice.)

There are several different approaches for treatment-resistant depression, including brain stimulation therapies. Electroconvulsive therapy is the most widely known, and NIMH says it’s the most researched stimulation therapy with the longest use history. Other stimulation therapies include vagus nerve stimulation, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, magnetic seizure therapy, and deep brain stimulation. They are considered to be newer and more experimental methods. Other unconventional methods for treating depression include hallucinogenic, or “magic,” mushrooms. They were popular in the 1960s but outlawed in 1968. The psychoactive qualities of the mushrooms have a direct effect on consciousness. It is clear that the brain is highly complex. How we experience depression has individual characteristics. How we respond to treatment is uniquely personal, as well. Those who suffer from it share certain features of the disorder, but it’s important to be somewhat experimental with treatment options. Any approach to treating depression and manic depression needs to encompass several disciplines. In other words, it must be holistic: the whole person must be treated, from thought processes to personal care, and from adjusting thinking patterns to building mental muscle.

Alicemarie writes, “We live in exciting times. The energy both thrills and terrifies, and time races. Change is swift , and customs and traditions no longer dictate our behavior. Technology seems to be an Olympic event as more sophisticated gadgets hit store shelves in rapid succession. Time-honored institutions are transforming, while the enormous cost of education makes it less accessible than ever before. Communications are instantaneous as that etheric world, the Internet, clamors for our attention and challenges us just to keep up with its pace. A time such as this is not for the faint of heart. In the midst of all this change, we find ourselves participants in and witnesses to the next step of human growth. We seem to be evolving as a species. The planet is evolving too, its trajectory probably attributable in some measure to our self-centered tenancy on Earth. We don’t have a choice in the nature of these changes. Our growth is one of expanding consciousness. It’s happening worldwide, and no one is immune. If we don’t become more self-aware, more consciously awake, we won’t survive the shifting evolutionary winds. Our survival depends on expanding our consciousness beyond the limited perspectives we currently hold. We must survive the turbulence of personal breakdown much the way the world must survive the changes we are experiencing. This is what we are experiencing in the first decades of the twenty-first century. History contains myriad examples of groups who resisted change, and now it almost seems as if society is attempting to reverse course. The fringe seek to disrupt rather than problem-solve. Questions persist that are not yet taken seriously: Do we want to survive and thrive, or do we want to destroy ourselves?”

You might wonder what depression and manic depression have to do with all of this. Become aware that, as we evolve in consciousness, we see substantial increases in depression and manic depression. The numbers are climbing among all age groups, and as we grow older, our likelihood of experiencing depression increases. Studies show that many people who suffer from depression or manic depression are among our best and brightest. These sensitive, creative individuals have much to contribute, but society loses out on their gifts because they lose hope. These gifted people have a great deal to offer, but their illness can drive them to despair and self-destructive behavior.

Alicemarie’s interest in the indigenous cultures intrigued Sheryl as she has recognized that our connection to our Universal Ancestors and remembrance of our destiny as evolving spiritual/human beings is a complex reality and we must learn to balance our spirit with our bodies and the physical planet. Different cultures take varying approaches in dealing with mental illness. In indigenous cultures, the mentally ill are not ostracized as in Western culture. Rather, they are mentored and taught to use their creativity and sensitivity in service to others. Indigenous cultures have considered shaman as their spiritual leaders and healers for thousands of years. The shamanic tradition continues to this day in many areas of the world, including North America. The shamanic method in some cultures considers a person who suffers from mental illness to be in a spiritual rather than psychological condition. Those who develop mental disorders are those who are sensitive. Western culture views sensitivity as oversensitivity. Indigenous cultures don’t see sensitivity that way and, as a result, sensitive people don’t experience themselves as overly sensitive. In the West, “It’s the overload of the culture they’re in that is just wrecking them,” observes Dr. Somé. The frenetic pace, the bombardment of the senses, and the violent energy that characterizes Western culture can overwhelm sensitive people.”

People in the West feel uncomfortable with mental illness. We don’t understand it and don’t know how to deal with it, so we often shun those who suffer from illnesses or disorders of the mind. Yet how would we treat the depressed and manic-depressive differently if we saw their disorders as a part of the process of the evolution of consciousness (which is a spiritual occurrence)? How could we stigmatize those who are having a difficult time breaking through the boundaries of the old paradigm?

Where are you in terms of your attitude and especially your moods? This question can help you pinpoint the answer.

    • You have anxiety that makes you feel as if you’re drowning on dry land.
    • Your life circumstances seem hopeless.
    • It’s difficult to get out of bed in the morning, or alternatively, you have problems sleeping (you can’t fall asleep, or you regularly wake when you don’t want to).
    • Every activity feels like it is a major effort.
    • You have lost your energy and feel helpless.
    • You have lost interest in sexual activities.
    • Your appetite for food is either gone or insatiable.
    • You feel as if you are in a dark tunnel with no light in sight.
    • You have lost your joy in living.
    • You feel as if this will never end or your life will never improve.
    • You have an overall feeling of worthlessness.
    • You are using alcohol or street drugs to medicate or “even out” your mood.
    • You are contemplating ending it all.

If the majority of these characteristics apply to you, you are likely depressed. You might feel that you have tried plenty of treatments, medications, or both, and still find yourself in this place of desperation. The good news is that there’s real hope. You can be treated, and there’s a formula for recovery.

On the opposite side of that coin, the following characteristics can indicate a parallel mood disorder:

    • You feel euphoric.
    • You believe you have superior abilities even though you might have no training.
    • You are not sleeping, or you sleep little and fitfully.
    • Your speech is rapid, and you talk nonstop.
    • You have lost your appetite for food.
    • You are hypersexual.
    • You indiscriminately spend large amounts of money.
    • You are easily irritated.
    • You use alcohol or street drugs to slow down.

If the majority of these characteristics apply to you, you are likely manic. When a person exhibits characteristics of both depression and mania at different times, he or she is termed bipolar, or manic-depressive. Features of depression alone, without the mania, are termed unipolar. These are not only serious illnesses; they are spiritual maladies. And they can be effectively treated on both levels.

State of Mental Health in America. If you think you are unipolar or bipolar, you are not alone. Recent statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness2 provide a sobering picture of the state of mental health for American adults.

    They include:

    • 6.9 percent, or 16 million, live with major depression.
    • 2.6 percent, or 1.6 million, live with bipolar disorder (manic depression).
    • 18.1 percent, or 42 million, live with anxiety disorders, which are often experienced in tandem with major depression and bipolar disorder.
    • Approximately 8.4 million adults have co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders.
    • Approximately 26 percent of homeless adults in shelters live with serious mental illness. In addition, the U.S. Justice Department reports that 24 percent of state prisoners have had histories of a mental health condition.

In our Western culture, depression and manic depression are considered mental illnesses. They affect our behavior toward ourselves and others, and they make life difficult. We can be indecisive or make uncharacteristic choices. Our sense of ourselves is dark and pessimistic.

How to find the gift in the complexity of the challenge of depression.

Alicemarie writes, “Our minds and spirits are constructed of marvelous features. The mind enables existence and operational maneuvering through life; the spirit provides the incentive for living. In addition, the spirit gives us meaning while the mind provides reason and direction for that meaning. When they operate properly, we hum along in a united, healthy manner. When there is discord within or between them, nothing operates well. If one is affected, both are affected, for they are a team. Mind and spirit complement and rely on each other for success. It’s not necessary to have a particular belief system regarding spirit, for spirit operates whether or not we believe in it. Spirit provides the breath of life.”

Sheryl shares a thought that many are unable perhaps to realize: that it is working in a balanced way with our intuitive guidance soul essence that allows us to maneuver the world and find the best way to live in harmony and peace and a state of calm to monitor our energy so we are not overwhelmed by the needs of the outside world, but focus on self-investigation and the journey of the soul which is what life in a three dimensional world is really about.

Alicemarie also writes about individualist thoughts which can either be greatly rewarding or challenging depending on how we use them and wrote, “This group of thoughts expresses originality, independence, freedom, and inventiveness. These are the thoughts that question authority and rebel against unreasonable restrictions in our lives. Individualistic thoughts provide the impetus for change, embracing the new and innovative. They are higher expressions of intellectual thoughts. On the positive side, individualistic thoughts can give a person a magnetic personality, an adventurous spirit, and a highly intuitive mind. However, when individualistic thoughts become discordant or inharmonious, we can attract people who are less than pleasant into our lives. These might be friends or relatives who don’t act in our best interest, yet profess their loyalty and concern. We sabotage ourselves when individualistic thoughts conflict. We might see ourselves as isolated, alone, or misfits, becoming recluses or misunderstood loners. Or we can set ourselves apart from others and think we are superior. Whenever we see ourselves as exceptions rather than as parts of the whole, we set ourselves up for a fall. When we’re depressed, we feel completely alone. We isolate ourselves because we think we’re unfit company, and we don’t have the energy or inclination to be social. We might believe we’re the only ones in such pain and get caught in the victim mentality. By acting that way, we attract more of that energy to us.

Alicemarie and Sheryl discuss moving beyond the debilitating energies of shame and grief which are so prevalent in our society.

Sheryl would say, “ Shame grief suffering like any other negative feeling exists if you allow yourself to stay in that energy. There are so many emotions to feel and that is the purpose of a physical life for a soul to feel all of the emotions and to move through them like water flows from one level to another barely stopping unless blocked by an obstacle which inserts itself into the natural progression. By remembering the light and love as your true soul nature you can choose not to engage the shame others try to impose on you realizing that if you try your best you have already succeeded in conquering the fears that others try to bring you into. You can recognize those states but also you can choose to turn away from staying in that story choosing to create a new reality that brims with happiness and joy.

In Sheryl’s book The Living Spirit in reference to this she wrote, ‘We should aim to become a person who doesn’t find fault in others, moving past personal obstacles with courage, hope and faith to find peace. Be free of any influence of others that take that state of mind-peace away from you. Recognizing another avenue for finding happiness is possible when we finally admit, “Not only are we not perfect, no one is perfect.” We must continue to learn what makes us tick, and what makes others react as they do, but should acknowledge that we can only change ourselves and our outdated thinking by realizing we are responsible for our own actions. The choice to accept others and ourselves with our frailties and sometimes negative behaviors can be hard, yet it is necessary in order to have times when we feel like we are on cloud 9.”

Alicemarie mentions PTSD can be treated much like depression manic depression or bi-polar illness and it is a condition that has to do with any traumatizing event: abuse of any kind and not merely related to conditions affecting soldiers in war. Therapy comes in many forms. Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, teaches strategies and tools for coping with mental illnesses. Among the types of psychotherapy is cognitive behavioral therapy, which the National Institutes of Health (NIH) describes in the following terms: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a blend of two therapies: cognitive therapy (CT) and behavioral therapy. CT was developed by psychotherapist Aaron Beck, MD, in the 1960s. CT focuses on a person’s thoughts and beliefs and how they influence a person’s mood and actions, and aims to change a person’s thinking to be more adaptive and healthy. Behavioral therapy focuses on a person’s actions and aims to change unhealthy behavior patterns.

Cognitive behavioral therapy has shown effectiveness in dealing with mild to moderate depression, according to the NIH website. In addition to therapy, severe depression may require medications, and bipolar disorder calls for a mood stabilizer.

Other therapies include dialectical behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, family-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and light therapy. Art therapy, animal-assisted therapy, and play therapy also can be used in tandem with traditional forms.

Group therapy can be especially beneficial. When we feel depressed, it’s comforting to know we aren’t alone. Good friendships might form as a result of group therapy. From these numerous options, the client and doctor can determine the proper therapeutic approach, whether that is a singular form or a combination.

When we are in a depressive episode or a relapse, our thoughts are tinged with darkness. Everything appears cloudy. We tend to obsess on defeatist thoughts over and over again. In a manic episode, our thoughts can be clear and optimistic—until they’re no longer clear or optimistic. In other words, mania advances from mild through moderate and heads into chaos. At that point, our thoughts no longer agree with reality. The same can be said for depressive thoughts: They’re not in agreement with reality. In either condition, we have no awareness of it at the time. For this reason, mental alchemy is the perfect tool to improve the quality of our thoughts. Mental alchemy has the capacity to ground us. It pulls us back to Earth into our “right mind” and allows us to exercise some control over our reality. Mental alchemy becomes more potent as we exercise the mental and emotional muscle. Doing simple and familiar exercises can assist the alchemical process. These include reading, writing, journaling, painting, sculpting, knitting, sewing, crocheting, making pottery, listening to or playing music, and other ways of expressing our feelings. All of these activities engage and calm the mind. The creative process helps us move beyond ourselves. These activities improve mood and increase our vibration, lifting us out of the darkness and into the light.

The following questions can provide powerful and revealing answers and help to determine if you are in a cycle of depression and need immediate help.

    • How did I get to this place in my life? This opens a wealth of possibilities to examine in writing. In fact, this could be the beginning of a memoir.
    • When did my depression begin? Using recall, write out your recollections of what triggered the depression.
    • What did it feel like when I was not depressed? This question helps to jog the memory. Recalling a “me” when depression was not your mind-set will help you believe that you can feel that way again.
    • When did mania turn into depression? For those with manic depression (bipolar disorder), this involves analysis and memory.
    • What areas of my life do I want to address in therapy? Creating lists and planning for future therapy sessions can be helpful.
    • What goals do I want to include in my life? This question helps initiate the process of opening to a more empowered state of mind. Setting goals achieves this.
    • What am I willing to release in order to heal? This question involves in-depth examination. The answers might be alcohol, street drugs, or toxic relationships, to name a few possibilities.
    • What do I think would most help me heal? This could include proper medications, therapy, support, financial assistance, and so on.
    • What makes me happy? Asking this can lead to memories of feeling hopeful and expansive.
    • What makes me laugh? This also prompts recollections of joy and pleasure.
    • What touches my heart? The answer could be anything: an animal companion, a new baby, or a walk by the sea at sunset.
    • What do I want to do when I’m healed? This is like standing on top of a mountain and looking down the road to the future. What can be seen there? What can I look forward to?

In the beginning, it’s best to write for ourselves so we can express exactly what’s on our mind without worrying that others will judge us. If we live with others, especially a spouse or partner, we must insist on a certain level of privacy. Depression always creates distance from others, so writing is one area in which this distance can be advantageous.

Alicemarie helps family members caring for and having their own lives disrupted by the challenges of this mental disorder.

First you must understand what it is like and Alicemarie describes it this way:

“My medication was an antipsychotic, although I didn’t have a diagnosis yet other than “brief psychotic episode.” By the time I was finally diagnosed as bipolar and started on lithium, I had plunged into a devastating depression that lasted more than six months. I had known depression throughout my young life, but nothing could have prepared me for this shift from an expansive, sensual world full of life and magic during the mania, to a dark, narrow, suffocating world during the depression. The transition happened overnight. It was drastic, debilitating, and frightening. I had suicidal thoughts constantly, believing my life was over. Would I even be missed? I did not believe anyone would feel the loss, because all my thoughts were depressed thoughts. My mind is filled with that netherworld of darkness and despair.”

We thank you Alicemarie O’Neil author of The Formula Seven Steps to End Depression and for clearly concisely describing the conditions of depression, manic depression and bi-polar depression offering excellent approaches to working with a serious and prevalent health issue that affects all segments of our society.

In summarizing today’s episode of Healing From Within we have offered listeners a clearer view and personal examination of the various stages and reactions when dealing with depression bi-polar disorder or manic episodes which may be exhibited Alicemarie O’Neill has clearly explained ways to find the help and projects that may create healing situations and lessen the effects or stigma associated with an often misunderstood yet quite common life challenge “depression”. Like any challenge it offers possibilities to know yourself the physical world and Universal Source in new ways that help to create a life seeking love and to find ways to connect to others in a more refined compassionate fashion aiding the soul to merge both spiritual and physical aspects of life and in doing so discovering gratitude joy kindness within and an appreciation of life beyond any illness or hardship.

As Alice Marie O’Neil wrote, “We are as much a part of nature as the roses, birds, trees, and tides. Depression deceives us into thinking we are separate from the rest of life. Yet, when we feel our connection to all living things, we find our greatest healing. Feeling this connection raises our vibration, and raising it is the key to raising our awareness and consciousness. Heightened awareness helps dissolve despair. Darkness has no hold in the presence of light.”

Alice Marie and Sheryl would have you remember who you are as a spiritual being having a physical life and for you to try to embrace the hope we have for finding ways to live in peace harmony balance and general well-being, no matter the health challenge we may have: for in the end, the only reality is our ability to shift and change ourselves into our best version of acceptance and surrender to all, for then we are free of pain fear worry and illusion. Our true nature is always to love positivity and hope for a good day.

Welcome to Healing From Within with host Sheryl Glick author of The Living Spirit Answers for Healing and Infinite Love which shares stories of spiritual awakening spiritual communication healing energies miracles and ways to discover and use intuition for creating healthier happier more productive life experiences and today Sheryl welcomes Linda “Moonrabbit” Zlotnick author of Star Sisters: An Astrologers Memoir of Twin Loss which shares a story of a difficult beginning in childhood, trauma, loss and a love for the connection to Universal truths that helped her find a way to joy and peace beyond all the challenges.

Linda as the grandmother of twin granddaughters I am acutely aware of the special connection my granddaughters girls have and have observed the many unique differences of their souls as well as the challenges after their birth and feel blessed to have been part of their special dance together and with my family in life.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” are so well aware each show features guests who have explored the realms of metaphysical life moving beyond convention thinking of the ego motivated view of the physical world to know in feeling and by engaging with mind body and soul, the eternal soul nature of life as it begins to know itself and the Divine dimensions of life beyond here in a more loving comprehensive and complete way. In other words as spiritual beings having a physical life many of us often awaken through a trauma loss accident or hardship the true nature of being and greater love for ourselves and others.

In today’s episode of Healing from Within Linda Zlotnick shares her journey growing up in Minneapolis with her twin sister Lou Ann and their special spiritual twin “ESP” gift. Their relationship like that of most twins involved sibling rivalry covert competition and unconditional love. When Lou Ann was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer at age fifty six, life changed drastically. We will discover how Linda’s work as an astrologer helped her come to terms with the loss of her beloved twin sister and appreciate that it was the destiny of her sister’s soul and helped her and others to appreciate life in all its multi-dimensional aspects leading us to trust the plan and time of passing.

Linda tells us that Lou Ann and she were just about to turn eleven when her view of the world changed in two major ways. At the end of fourth grade they learned Lou Ann and Linda shared a special gift called ESP and over the summer, Linda discovered more about her deep connection to the stars and her interest in astrology began. Knowing and sensing things were part of their sensitive soul nature and they were both gifted although very different in so many ways. Lou Ann was more adventuresome even rambunctious at times while Linda Lea was more reflective and cautious. Linda Lea was always sad at being separated from Lou Ann in school even though my mother said we would make new friends and now we would be separate again either by camp, school marriage, or death.

Lou Ann was interested in getting married and escaping living at home and during her second semester met Joe 3 years older and studying to be a math professor. Linda knew she wanted much more than being someone’s wife. Linda decided to live on her own and get an apartment on campus..Linda knew life at home would be intolerable for her with Lou Ann gone. Lou Ann’s marriage was short lived. Just after college they both came out as lesbian and went on to work in healing professions Lou Ann as a social worker and psychoanalyst Linda as a professional astrologer

Sheryl asks if there was something in their home life or family dynamics which may have lead both girls to healing work and or their sexual orientation?

And Sheryl goes on to say,

“It’s like healers and mediums are born, but not all things are genetic or predestined. For example some sexual preferences may be determined by what a child interprets is acceptable in their culture peer group or family. Children abused by pedophiles often go on to continue the learned pattern of behavior and abuse. Our experiences can set us up for perceiving life according to another’s values or rules.

Linda writes about her first experience with a young boy who exposed himself to you and your sister and you both laughed and thought how ugly the boys private parts were. A small incident but then there were seemingly additional events that could have been damaging to your ideas of what was right for you. You go on to explain that there was a next door couple that you babysat for and he bought a gadget that was used for massage and used to give you and Lou Ann massages after your mother died when you were about seventeen years old. You say you liked Shel and his wife Ann and they were frequent visitors in your house… You write, “One day I noticed when he was giving us a massage he was breathing so fast and I couldn’t figure it out. I started to be uncomfortable and moved away, But he wasn’t done and he began running his hands up and down my arms. I tried to get away and he said You’re a selfish girl I’ve watched you with your family All you do is take and take. He moved his face closer tome his breath stank of cigarettes. Now it’s time for you to give. I hesitated thinking my mom when she was alive had said I was selfish. In that moment of hesitation he was on me. Nothing had ever prepared me for this. I had an idea and said I had to go to the bathroom.. As fast as I could I ran out of the house home to my bathroom where I vomited.”

When Linda told Lou Ann who then told her she had seen him looking at her body so she made excuses to stay away from him. We remembered asking our mother when we’d be old enough to date We had just started High School and she said Just remember all men are animals with a harsh bitterness in her voice. I didn’t believe her then.

Linda Lea remembered seeing a picture of my mother standing next to her parents who had come from Russia to flee the pogroms. They then had settled in Iowa a place rife with Anti-Semitism. In the picture Mom looked about fourteen years old..she stood with her arms wrapped around her body slightly turned away from her parents with a distant haunted look in her eyes. Something about her warning to us, her posture and the look in her eyes made me wonder if she’d been the victim of her own father, a man who scared me during every visit.

Sheryl suggests that her mother’s early terminal cancer illness could have been as a result of her early traumas. Most probably her cancer as are most cancers was the effect of deep seated bitterness and fear from her childhood traumas as Louise Hay author of You Can Heal Your Life and many people I have interviewed have suggested.

Sexual orientation and preference may be the response to genetic predispositions or environmental issues. The reason Sheryl says this is because one day she met a teacher from a very challenged inner city school where she observed that many of her female students were telling her they were gay and she was of the mindset it was because they saw and experienced such violence drug abuse sexual dysfunction and diseases and poor male examples or choices for them in the community, that they felt safer staying with women and also were in their minds, perhaps, unable to compete for a male partner. Also the media over the last twenty years and the Hollywood community of writers actors and creative people many whom are gay have put so much of this viewpoint or slant towards enlarging their LGBT group and it is prevalent in everything we read see and hear in music. It seems it has gone beyond just being okay to be homosexual but more like it can be seen as being preferred. Like children of sexual predators are groomed and trained to be part of certain behaviors…our culture has been grooming our young people in a similar fashion. It is not healthy to promote a sexual lifestyle in this controlling way: It should be a natural process and choice.

Many of us wish to embrace all people and their needs, but we do not expect those who have money and power to marginalize the natural instincts of some and to steer them in other directions. Just look at what has gone on this past year with the Weinstein debacle in Hollywood and the Epstein pedophilia investigation with political overtones and the MeToo movement. Clearly our secrecy and lack of discussion of sexual ideas have led to many problems in our society.

Sheryl says that as a sensitive empathic person who seemed to have a sense of what was happening even before it did she wasn’t aware that she was highly intuitive… She thought she was just following good thoughts that worked out well, but 26 years ago after having a dream where her deceased grandfather stood near to her in energy form and told her, “You have to write something for my father” she was so confused by the experience. The next day Sheryl’s mom called telling her that her father had passed and while she wrote his eulogy as she had been instructed, she couldn’t quite grasp what had happened..Coincidences and synchronicity continued and she finally discovered what had happened wasn’t a dream, but a spiritual visitation. Sheryl was off on a quest to discover where her grandfather was now residing and why he had come that night. As she allowed herself to follow the messages she found many guides along the way. One of the first readings Sheryl had was from a healer in Lily Dale a spiritual community of healers and mediums near Buffalo New York. Sheryl was told that the line in her hand showing psychic ability was off the charts and her ability would explode.. Of course Sheryl responded, “I don’t know about that.” But since that time has become a practicing intuitive Reiki healer and medium. Sheryl was also told she had to write 3 books and has just completed the third book New Life Awaits which shares the truth that what we create in each moment here in the physical life which will help us create our next life in Spirit.

Clearly the study of astrology is really important to Linda. Linda writes, “ Astrology finds meaning in cosmic patterns, for everything is connected and we are part of the world and solar system we live in. Astrology does not cause events to happen but rather holds up a mirror so we can see them more clearly. We all know that although life can be wonderful amazing and even brilliant, it also can be confusing painful and hard. In truth there is a season for all things, and that’s where astrology can help. I’ve found that I can survive just about anything if I can extract a nugget of wisdom or find meaning in the experience. Astrology helped me make peace with the too early death of my mother at age 17 and the shattering loss of my identical twin at age 56 and it has given me insight understanding and guidance as I’ve learned about parenting both biological and adopted children. As a business owner I depend upon the input in making timely and productive decisions. Basically I believe we are on this planet to learn grow and contribute, and astrology is the best tool. I’ve found to help in achieving these ends.

Linda tells us that Lou Ann her twin came out as a lesbian after you and why she thinks it took her longer Lou Ann was married for a short time and probably was looking for a more conventional life at that young age. She had had an easier relationship with our Mom and was always a step ahead of Linda so she was more confident and comfortable in her own body and decision making processes and possibly wasn’t as damaged by the emotional and physical abuse Linda Lea felt so sharply and continuously as a child. Linda began life prematurely and was kept in an incubator disconnected from her mother and the love which is so vital at the early stages of life. Linda also writes that her sister was always slighter taller than her and stood in every photo in the front. Around age three something changed. While Lou Ann looked directly at the camera with a big smile I looked to the side or down. My smile looked awkward, reluctant . Mom told me later that I had a hernia repair surgery and after the surgery developed a high fever and almost died. The event mirrored my birth when I’d been left in the hospital incubator alone. Later when I was an adult during body work sessions and in dreams I’d have brief memories of endless terror and crying for help.

Sheryl says…though genetically almost identical to your twin your experiences as indeed all our experiences clearly define our fears and challenges and are unique to our development and to how we view the world.

Linda seems to describe an out of body experience she had. As a healer and medium Sheryl has discovered so many people interested in the field of metaphysics or the study of energy, the afterlife and the Universal Laws of energy often study many energy modalities to allow them to advance their awareness and reach higher consciousness.

At a session with an energy healer Linda drifted off and in a dream, a lucid dream, Linda flew effortlessly through outer space in a vast star studded world—a world of darkness where the darkness was infused with light. The light penetrated every cell in our body and mind until she felt completely dissolved and illuminated. Constellations streamed by and whorl shaped galaxies glittered in the distance, more magnificent and beautiful than anything she had ever imagined. Linda floated amidst the rings of Saturn and marveled at their dusty reflective particle….The entire time a subtle vibrational music filled my ears ..An immense sense of perfection wholeness and peace filled me. That dream was more real than anything she’d ever experienced. Lou Ann told her she had a lucid dream that she had learned about in psychology class. It’s an altered state of consciousness. Lou Ann didn’t think she could make a living as a astrologist but Linda like many was guided by Spirit to pursue her mission in this time and place.

As a result of altered consciousness Linda wrote, “The world I had known and my understanding of reality had shattered. In its place was another kind of knowing. All life was interconnected and humans were capable of much more than we imagined. If not for our everyday limited consciousness, we would all live inside the divine.” Like me my twin sister Lou Ann was seeking something beyond what we all knew.

After her divorce from Joe Lou Ann changed career direction. She studied gestalt therapy astrology psychic interests and Reiki healing. She attended a well known psychic workshop with someone from the Easlen Institute and had an individual session

Linda decided to study Reiki in the hopes of creating a strong core or root center. During a Reiki session she had a past life experience and felt such pain in both of my wrists. Her intuitive reiki practitioner told her she had been a healer and had her hands cut off for breaking the law…She was also told by this psychic healer that she had to take back her power given to an abuser.. She knew immediately she had to confront her old neighbor Shel who had tried to sexually abuse her. She and Lou Ann decided to include Dad and confront Shel at his office. But what was surprising at that confrontation was not the apology Linda received for the sexual advance from a grown man a month after she had lost her mother, but the way her father responded to Shel. Dad said he was sorry to have bothered him and shook his hand. Linda hated Shel but also her father for caring more about his feelings than hers. We knew Dad didn’t like confrontations and always tiptoed around Mom and maybe there was a reason for how he acted. He obviously came from an abusive family and had trauma at an early age also.

At therapy Linda was told that her mom was physically and emotionally abusive. Lou Ann who was studying psychology didn’t think so and said that their mother had a bad temper and hit us but we weren’t abused. In her MA program she learned about alcoholism and drug abuse in families. Now those kids were abused.. Linda Lea went on to say, “I’m not talking spankings, It was her rage, the hitting throwing things, the shaming that makes it abuse.

Sheryl says: It seems so many children are in dysfunctional families..Perhaps everyone is in a dysfunctional family for we are all socialized and expected to follow rules many of which are arbitrary and benefit those making the rules, not those who have to follow them. Parents and adults have so many stresses in this modern day world that they are all struggling to stay afloat and everyone is suffering in one way or another. Yet Sheryl as many others are aware that we all chose the families we are born into in order to have the experiences our soul deems necessary for it’s growth .

In Sheryl’s book The Living Spirit she wrote about some of the challenges we face from the past and within our family life, “When we are born into this life, we unknowingly carry within us our soul energy of past life memories of people, places, and events that may have resulted in less than desirable, if not devastating, outcomes. The important thing to remember is that in this life we can make new choices that will release these traumas to create better health and relationships and find a connection to universal energy. In order to do this, we must work towards relinquishing blame, judgment, fear and ideas of our limitation. It is only when we create within ourselves a sense of personal power courage, self-love and bravery that we can embrace both the gift of life and the challenges that the universe offers us.”

Sheryl would say that as a medium who downloads messages for clients who have lost a loved one she is totally aware that life survives physical death and we remain connected to them as they are around us in energy and still part of our life though living in another dimension of life.

When Lou Ann was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at her partner Mindy’s urging Linda went to a genetic counselor and the tests came for Linda came back negative. “Twins are born with identical genes, but genes change over the course of a lifetime,” “Environmental stimuli can force a gene to mutate slightly and if that happens the person is more susceptible to cancer. Your risk factor is higher because your twin developed this disease but does not mean you will get the disease. So Linda decided to study their birth charts.

Right off Linda saw Chiron the wounded healer archetype on the point or nadir of Lou Ann’s death chart. She thought about that time at the lake when Lou Ann had shared her longing to be a mom and the regret she felt. Regrets were all about wounds, what a person had not brought into their lives: what she missed with a deep ache in her soul. Staring at the Chiron on her death chart made me realize it was opposite the sun, Saturn conjunction, a profound symbol of the end of a life person’s life force. The charts were never wrong although if a person was not ready to accept the truth, it would not be seen as being accurate. Such is the power of the mind to deceive and deny reality.

Since Lou Ann’s passing Linda has been able to explore her own issues to find growth and peace. Linda wrote. “During Lou Ann’s illness especially as it worsened an inner healing started in her that liberated her unlived spirit. Like the wisps of smoke after you blow out a candle, it snuck in between moments of nausea, doctor’s appointments and bad news. I saw a new serenity on her face noticed a looser posture in her body and heard a soothing quality in her voice. She spent more time listening to inspiring music and reading Buddhist teachings. Underneath it all lay an acceptance of death, a willingness to leave behind parts of her that were unnecessary and inauthentic. I saw her transform from wounded healer, Lou Ann the psychoanalyst into something far more illuminated. Later I would come to understand that to survive her death I would have to do the exact same thing.”

Linda might want us to remember after reading her book Star Sisters that no matter how the journey of dealing with cancer is for a loved one, especially a twin sister, much is learned by the soul during this difficult time and in the end, it is only an experience leading us past the difficulties of the physical world, leading us into the light and love of our soul life beyond this planet. It is necessary for the soul to expand and experience greater love. While we wish it were not necessary for anyone especially those closest to us, the stars and our life plan determine the experiences we must have and the time we must depart this life. It is not random and it is as it is written in our soul journey …the family we are born into, the work we will explore, the loves of our lives and the time of our death. There is meaning and purpose to all of it. Healers intuitive mediums astrology charts all tell the truth, and the truth cannot be bent or altered. Allowing accepting and surrendering to what must be in the end is necessary to lead us forward to new life in the universal dimensions of creation and eternal life.

Linda “Moonrabbit” Zlotnick author of Star Sisters has shared her unique journey in so many different aspects of human challenges…losing a mother at a young age, losing a twin, exploring a unique life style as a lesbian and mother of daughters and the feminist perspective in life… and being an alternative healer in the astrological realm of seeing life in different dimensions and times, all a bit out of the mainstream, but offering unique opportunities to know yourself and life on levels that many have not explored in this lifetime in any other way.

In summarizing today’s episode of “Healing From Within” it has become evident from Linda and Sheryl that no matter how the journey of dealing with cancer is for a loved one, especially a twin sister, much is learned by the individual’s soul, their family and friends, and though so difficult to live through in the end it is only an experience past the challenges of the physical body and world, leading us into the light and love of soul life beyond this planet. It is necessary for the soul to expand and experience greater love and often we do this through the most painful of times. While we wish it were not necessary for anyone especially those closest to us, the stars and our life plan determine the experiences we must have and the time and way we must depart this life. It is not and never has been random and it is as it is written in our soul journey …the family we are born into, the work we will explore, the loves of our lives, and the time of our death. There is meaning and purpose to all of it. Healers mediums astrologers all tell the truth and the truth cannot be bent or altered. Allowing accepting and surrendering to what must be in the end is necessary to lead us forward to new life in the universal dimensions of creation and eternal life. But what is remembered and appreciated by those who have more time yet to live is to be valued and honored treasured and shared.

Linda, Lou Ann and Sheryl would have you remember that the joy and sorrow we carry through life is a badge of honor showing us that the courage and bravery of the soul out weights the frailty of the human body. While we travel divergent paths one thing is clear as written by Kahlil Gibran “Joy and sorrow are inseparable…Together they come, and when one sits alone with you, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Welcome to “Healing From Within” with your host Sheryl Glick, author of The Living Spirit, which shares stories of spiritual awakening, spiritual communication, healing energies, miracles and ways to begin to know intuition and inner guidance for producing a healthier, more prosperous and joyful life experience. Today Sheryl welcomes Tito Abao, author of The Monograph of the Parallel Life of Tito Abao and Niro, a survivor of a near death experience in 2007.

As long time listeners of the show are well aware, Sheryl and her guests share intimate insights into the metaphysical aspects of life, both spiritually and physically in order to learn more about the human condition, the Universe, lifetimes of eternal travel to places beyond time and space and dimensions of life that are infinite. Our goal is to develop the tools awareness and higher consciousness to help us evolve and transform ourselves and the world moving towards greater compassion and love for life.

In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” Tito Abao will share the thoughts he has gathered as the result of eleven years of intense regression work leading us to discover the infinite nature of our inner soul being which transcends the physical life.

Jumping ahead to his adult life we find that in the early 60’s Tito became an initiate in a Christian Yoga Church under one of the first American realized beings, Sri Subramuniya. After several years in the Order he went on to become an architectural draftsman until resuming his quest for spiritual liberation after a near death experience in 2007. Tito completed the majority of his metaphysical training at the Monroe Institute, a school dedicated to heightened conscious learning located in Faber Virginia. The author’s lifelong interactions with the paranormal as well as out of body and recurring past life dreams and memories have fueled his desire to produce a book that recounts his spiritual journey. He is hoping to encourage others to explore their own intuitions and metaphysical experiences.

Tito tells us how the spiritual world, ancient, new age and the actual truth have always been at odds because religion the codified set in stone realm of belief systems of dogma dominated the landscape for most of the recorded history of the planet.

Tito Abao describes The New Age movement as a western development beginning in the second half of the 20th century. Modern psychological sciences pioneered by Freud and Jung attempted to get at the ‘truth’ about the human psychology. The old religions simply failed and only survived in the past by state sanctioned murder and mayhem not by common sense. Modern western Newtonian principles which demanded proof about one’s postulates concerning Life, God and how the Universe works stopped the murderous tendency of the Christian religions in the West dead in their tracks.

The New Age movement opened the door to Eastern religions and metaphysical concepts which seemed to point to some very sound ways to view reality. The New Age contemplated the idea of Spirituality. Spirituality being an inherent ability of beings to sense a higher power at work without fixed rules or dogmatic statements of fact which had no proof that could stand up to the scientific method and therefore could not be in fact a fact. Dogma is only a belief and has the same weight as any other belief. It simply boiled down to what any individual human decided he/she wanted to believe. Now, in the new age everyone had the right to believe what they chose without pain of death ordered by The Vatican or any other religious authority which had the backing of the State.

Once this door was opened to ordinary men and women to be able to safely think and experience for themselves. The phenomena of the Realized Being began to appear on the scene. A Realized Being is one who has transcended the mind. One who has achieved union with God or Source. David Hawkins in the ’70’s calculated that this happens spontaneously 1 in 10,000,000 births.

The first Realized Being introduced into the Western consciousness was Ramana Maharishi by Paul Brunton, in his book, A Search For Secret India, published in 1934. But, Brunton did not use the term Realized Being. Forty years would have to past before the West became acquainted with the term Realized Being and what it meant generally. Even today, this term is not particularly understood in a very precise definition and even worst, practiced in a uniform manner. Few people actually know what being a Realized Being really is in fact.

In regard to the question “is there a beginning, is there an end?” Tito’s spiritual awakenings suggests there is no beginning and no end to our individual lives. We are immortal. The story lines we decide to enter into in the physical plane have a beginning and an end which we agree to run. Sheryl would respond: We are infinite beings of energy without time and space, but in the physical denser world there is a sense of time. Sheryl believes nothing is random, we have a soul life plan and destiny or a mission we have chosen to explore in this particular lifetime and the people and experiences are programmed into that itinerary or travel agenda. We are not alone and have three guides with us throughout the course of our life and many others when we need them during different challenges or learning phases.

Sheryl in her book “The Living Spirit” wrote “through the readings I do, clients begin to understand their spiritual connections to higher dimension, where souls who depart their physical bodies now reside and communicate with all souls on the Earth plane; some individuals more sensitive than others are receiving more complex messages. I believe our loved ones in spirit guide us to expand our understanding of our soul nature. They knew us in their physical lives, but after crossing over, they may become our teachers, helping us gain knowledge of life, death, and how to better navigate this three-dimensional physical plane called Earth. There is a universal sphere of continuous knowledge beyond Earth; it is the point where past, present, and future merge.”

Tito goes on to tell us there are only two books he trusts to give the general public an idea of what Self-Realization is and they are The Experience of No Self, by Bernadette Roberts and Kundalini Tantra – Song of Liberation, by Jan Esmann. Just about anything else is going to lead you into a massive confusion about the subject.

The Monograph Putting it all together This Monograph is just as the title implies a brief but very concise description of the series of my incarnations which led to the seminal parallel life that opened the narrow gateway for me to choose Liberation. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Tito tells us of how writing has always been a way to spiritual enlightenment. He goes on to say writing has always been a path to Spiritual liberation. Unfortunately for most writers, they are more interested in fame and fortune over Spiritual liberation. Truman Capote achieved a glimpse of Source when he wrote Breakfast at Tiffany’s, he apparently did not realize what he had written… who was Holly Golightly? Instead of transcending, Capote died in a drug stupor missing the whole point of his life. No one else recognizes it except Tito.

Tennessee Williams attempted it in “Suddenly Last Summer,” but, missed the real point which is what is God, who is God, how do we relate to the Divine. He did succeed in establishing the therapeutic value of facing your traumas head on. Contemporary to Capote and Williams was the curious case of Ernest Hemingway who began to explore Transcendence in “The Old Man and the Sea” and got close to a very profound insight in “Across the River into the Trees,” but he got lost in machoism and alcohol and was not quiet sensitive enough or brave enough to allow himself to see the truth clearly as would J. D. Salinger.

In the contemporary world J. D. Salinger may have come very close to realizing the truth, because, he walked away from literary fame after the great acclaim of “The Catcher in the Rye.” By late 1940, Salinger became an avid follower of Zen Buddhism. He clearly was making gains toward Spiritual Liberation. Whether he achieved it or not I do not know.

Someone who did… and there may have been three of them… actually achieve the state of Realized Being… was Ralph Waldo Emerson (without a doubt), Walt Whitman (possibly… I don’t know for sure)… and Henry David Thoreau all contemporaries in the early 1800’s… they even at this early time referred to themselves as Transcendentalist anticipating the modern Transcendent movement of Realized Beings in the current era.

In reality the New Age began not in the 20th century but in the 19th century!

So following in the footsteps of these great writers my unfoldment through ‘writing’ is crowned with Caregivers Under Siege the successful achievement of my unfoldment the single most important platform of the twin goal and purpose of this incarnation… that of the 24/7 care of my mother Dolores M. Hall (aka Agrippina) and the lost of my inheritance. My between-lives agreement ended the 7000 year cycle of incarnations, opening the door to Spiritual liberation which Tito is currently pursuing with due diligence and vigor.

Tito says there is only one consciousness and that is the good news. The good news for every sentient being in the Universe and on Earth in particular is there is only one Consciousness. “All is One” is the old spiritual cliché. Lucky for all of us it is true. There are a couple of twists. The important one is that Life is eternal and if ‘life’ is a paradox, there is no beginning nor is there an end. The paradox is that ‘life’ is and it isn’t… at the same time!!! The Absolute just is and always will be… it is indestructible without birth or death… untainted and untaintable…. The idea is the first form… the idea is a luminous mass of living Divine light.

Eckhart Tolle in “Stillness Speaks” expresses it with this sutra: Stillness is your essential nature. What is stillness? The inner space or awareness in which the words on this page are being perceived and become thoughts is in the stillness. Without that awareness, there would be no perception, no thoughts, no world.

Tito’s experience is that we enter the physical universe through an energy vortex ( in this the physical plane black hole?).

Tito tells us that Duality is a mind created labeling system that enables you to believe that the world is separate from you.

Tito discusses reincarnation and Sheryl adds that most spiritually astute individuals come to realize in their search for knowingness, that reincarnation is a reality. Tito says that reincarnation is a functionality process that allows you to enter a timeline and run specific and precise storylines over thousands of years…his current time line began about 7000 years ago.

Sheryl tells about reading a book by Sonia Choquette, a psychic medium who suggested a meditation where Sheryl should in meditation visualize herself sitting on a stone bench and calling out to her soul. Sheryl did and was surprised when in her inner vision she saw a tall, dark curly haired woman with a brown robe and hood walking toward her. Sheryl couldn’t see her face but when she called out “What is your name?” Sheryl heard in a far away old voice “Helen …Troy” and of course, Sheryl knew the story of Helen of Troy, married to the Greek King Menelaus, who was either abducted or eloped with Prince Paris of Troy and a war was fought by all the Greek Kings who had promised if Helen was ever abducted, they would all unite to bring her back. Helen was the daughter of Zeus and Leda and was said to have been the most beautiful woman in the world. After this event Sheryl realized she had a painting of a woman in a brown robe standing overlooking the ocean on a balcony of stone like in ancient European days, that she had purchased many years ago and the painting reflected what perhaps Helen had observed when she was far from her original home in Troy. Was it a coincidence that she purchased it or did a part of her soul remember events so very long ago?

Reincarnation can be proven. If you are regressed by reputable regression practitioners or hypnotherapists and if you awaken into the realization that you have lived before….then you prove by personal experience that you are immortal…you do not die. There are stories of children that have been documented where they describe places, history, work and lives they remember and when researched, the truth of those memories are validated.

Sheryl says she attended an event by Dr. Brian Weiss author of “Many Lives Many Masters” who is a psychiatrist and during a deep meditation Sheryl saw herself in golden sandals with Gregg, her son in this life, at her side. It appeared to be Greece or Rome and her husband was in a chariot headed off to war. The theme of war, love lost and repeated, violence and sadness as a result of war was in both these lifetimes.

Shortly after that while at a new school, Sheryl was teaching at, a new secretary in the office walked by her and asked Sheryl if she would like to know something about her past life that was related to this life. Of course Sheryl said she would like to know. The medium told Sheryl that in her former past life in Portugal she was run down by a drunk man in a horse and wagon going very fast. Sheryl never recovered and died young, leaving a young son who was then raised by Sheryl’s Father in her most recent life. Her son in that life was now her mother in this life and it made perfect sense to Sheryl because she had always been delighted by everything her mother did. She was so lovely in her beautiful dresses and spectacular heels and floated by Sheryl, always smiling and laughing. She was childlike and Sheryl was very protective of her. Her father was also attentive to her childlike energy and in this life Sheryl got to take care of her before she passed at the age of eighty five years. What Sheryl had not done in that life in Portugal, she accomplished in this one. Reincarnation gives us the opportunity to refine relationships, playing different roles from one life to the next.

There are children who are born with unusual accents. Sheryl’s mother told her she had an English accent when she was a child. One of her first spiritual teachers, International Medium Robert Brown is from England and Sheryl now lives in an English Tudor house, so perhaps her soul had fond memories of a time in England long ago. There are children who remember things like being a fire fighter and living in another country and giving facts about these places and when it is checked out it is found to be true.

Tito tells us that a between-life agreement is a contract you make with Source to run a storyline so that Source can create a Matrix in the physical universe for you to run that story.

Tito and Sheryl discussed the Law of Attraction. Every desire you have will be experienced by you because the Universe is designed to fulfill that desire by materializing it in the physical universe. Ask and you shall receive, knock and it shall be opened unto you, seek and you shall find.

The Law of Flow, another universal energetic law suggests that he physical universe only has two flows. A positive flow and a negative flow. You come into the universe in one of those flows. All your experiences will be predominately based on and experienced by you as a Karmic debt…example you will be required to fulfill a trespass against another being. Or you will be the recipient of the fulfillment of a Karmic debt example…a trespasser will give you satisfaction for a harm they have dealt you,

We want to thank Tito Abao author of The Monograph of the Parallel Life of Tito Abao and Nero for sharing so many insights into the world of spiritual eternal life, the duality and miraculous possibilities for infinite creation of our thoughts and reality through the power of mind and soul influences and a greater understanding of reincarnation the laws of cause and effect and karma.

In summarizing today’s episode of “Healing From Within” we have discussed the eternal quality of individual soul life and the potential to create what it is that we need and wish to share with others. We have seen that within each of us is the human and divine connection to all that is and to eternal life.

Tito wrote, “This Word is humankind’s salvation in this three dimensional reality called Planet Earth. It means every individual Consciousness is actually an independent creator of its own reality. The Universe you were taught to believe as a place in which there can be scarcity and potential want, is a lie. It is not true! For you to have what you want does not mean someone else has to go without because there is a limited supply of resources.”

It is this belief that introduced competition for resources among humankind. The battle to enslave others and accumulate treasure is the source of the trauma each individual consciousness inflicted on each other causing the disassociation phenomena. The disassociation phenomena being the process in which a part of one’s consciousness gets left behind reliving the events of the trauma at a subconscious level, then becoming unconscious and then compressing into a repressed condition until engaged and dissolved back into oneself. That process is the basis of my consulting service as a Life Orientation Guide. Eventually, you no longer can create spontaneously and one requires time to materialize their needs and eventually one enters into a state of poverty in which they can create nothing and become powerless. There is a path back to your rightful relationship to Source itself.

Tito and Sheryl would have you begin to explore your own inner desires, moving towards remembering what was important to you at the beginning of life in your childhood and starting to remember the magnificent inner soul potential you have to create with your thoughts and actions a life worthy of your true spiritual gifts. Learn to conquer or let go of the fears of your mind as most are but illusion, and realize that you have the personal power to love yourself, others and the world when you accept who you are as a creative force of eternal life.

Welcome to Healing From Within with host Sheryl Glick author of The Living Spirit Answers for Healing and Infinite Love which shares stories of spiritual awakening spiritual communication healing energies miracles and ways to discover and use intuition for creating healthier happier more productive life experiences and today welcomes Travis Ruskus author of The Rock Balancers Guide which demonstrates a new form of mindfulness through art nature and creation to create a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” have come to expect over the years Sheryl and her guests explore the metaphysical concepts of life suggesting we are spiritual beings of energy having a physical life and therefore the world we create with our thoughts and actions can be balanced refined and help humanity evolve through all challenges for a more cooperative way of helping ourselves and communities to live with love and compassion.

In today’s episode of Healing From Within Travis Ruskus who is a professional rock balancer artist and meditation instructor who lives in San Francisco will show us how through the techniques of rock-balancing skills, breathing properly, at each moment, facing fears, and going beyond previous limits you can develop pristine ways of living in balance.

Travis when asked to think back to an earlier time in life his childhood and perhaps remember a person place or event that may have shown him or others the life path he would follow and the adult lifestyle he might embrace remembers when he was in kindergarten at about five years of age and made a picture of a bright sun set. The teacher took the picture away and he felt like he had lost a part of himself. Later he discovered his teacher had put the picture in a district art show and he won the blue ribbon award. So from being unable to let go of his work he learned that from something unpleasant at the moment something grand can happen.

Travis tells us how he discovered rock balancing and how this art form opened him up to the many paths to enlightenment, peace contentment and self-realization. Rock balancing is an art form in which stones are balanced naturally on top of each other to create beautiful formations without the aid of any artificial props, adhesives or supports. It is also a metaphor for life and the circle of creation –of beginnings and endings. As with any new skill the deeper you go, the more you will discover Travis’ intention with his book is to give you the technical knowledge that will allow you to balance rocks, along with the wisdom that goes with this practice.

The art of rock balancing has been around for thousands of years and this guide is part of a reawakening of a lost ancient wisdom. Through rock balancing you can learn how to let go of your creations freeing yourself into the next moment and you will be easier to let go of other things in life.

My rock balancing experience began in Boulder Colorado in 2013. I was standing in a river thinking how a recent chain of events had left me feeling almost completely numb inside. I didn’t know how to continue. I would never end my own life, but I didn’t know how to move forward. It was difficult just to breathe.

Life as I knew it had collapsed. I’d quit my career in the culinary industry having invested thousands of dollars in going to school to become a chef. Had moved from Portland Oregon and at the same time broken up with my girlfriend—my first time true love. I had no money and most of my friends had forgotten about me. It was the lowest point of my life. There in the water under the surface where rocks! These stones were completely still against the chaos of the rushing water. My vulnerability in the moment led me to see a wall of ancient faces looking back at me. I had no power to judge the stones. All I could do was see the rocks for what they truly were. I picked up one rock and saw sparkles of gold, silver and deep purple in it….a thought came into my head, how old is this rock?

The more I tried to guess, the more I had no idea….thousands of years old? Millions? Billions? I looked inwardly at myself and quietly said, “There is no way that you would be here on Earth by accident. There has to be a reason you are alive right now. In that moment words cannot describe how connected I felt to the universe.

I took the rock and decided to balance it on a larger rock nearby..I wanted to balance this rock in the most difficult way possible to prove to myself and to the spirit that gave me life that I still had a purpose in the world.

Sheryl says It sounds like an epiphany or awakening in the dark moment of your soul. In my book The Living Spirit I address this moment of awakening in this way, “As I began to step outside my comfort zone, I realized that there were thousands of people just like me, who had been thrust into a new state of awareness of life beyond the physical plane. Once this happened it was impossible to go back to that three-dimensional way of thinking. Suddenly the concerns of everyday living like worrying about paying the rent and managing our family and careers was no longer enough. We were seeking something greater, were seeking the truth of why we are all here and our connection to what is beyond us.”

Travis tells us about the seven keystones of rock balancing which are actually the basis for all practices and skills you will hope to refine.

    1. Breathe We experience how the breath connects us with the energy of each moment helping us discover our true power, one breath at a time.
    2. As new doors open we discover how a mindful practice of rock balancing can help us face our fears and overcome them to unlock our potential.
    3. Believe In my experience of teaching others how to balance rocks, 95 percent of people say, “I can’t” before they even pick up a rock and try. We discover the art of rock balancing is a tool for creating belief and confidence moving past fear and self-doubt.
    4. Balance Balance is a state of mind as well as a physical condition. A balanced rock creates a balanced mind which encourages equilibrium and focus.
    5. Limits Rock balancing teaches us to reconsider the limits we set ourselves and exceed our own expectations, setting us on the path toward realizing the infinite potential within ourselves.
    6. Release In this circle of life everything that is created will eventually be destroyed. Letting go is one of the hardest things to do, but we must learn to do it. There is no other choice.
    7. Evolve Rock balancing my help change the way we see the world. Through its principles we can discover how to evolve into our true selves and follow our dreams.

The seven keystones of rock balancing are designed to shift your perspective on what is possible within yourself and these principles will give you the tools you need to succeed at this art form as well as experience its wider impact on your life.

There are many the places in the world where rock balancing has been found.

Since prehistory people all over the globe have set stones upright and piled up rocks in cairs for a range of purposes from marking routes, burial monuments and buried items to highlighting astronomical events to providing shelter for hunters herders and livestock.

In North America for some 12,000 years indigenous trail guides have used rock balancing on their buffalo hunts and in the Arctic stone structures known as inukshuk as navigational aids. Today the Canadian Government frequently uses rock balances as nautical channel markers and landmarks.

In South America cairns have been used to mark trails since pre-Columbian times throughout what is now Latin America. In the Andes mountains cairns were built as shrines to the Incan earth goddess Pachamama.

In Europe surviving prehistoric stone structures from dolmens to standing stones to burial cairns were raised from the Neolithic era. Stonehenge is known for its iconic trilithons formed of massive stone uprights with a third block placed as a lintel across the top. For example between Iceland and mainland Europe lie the Faroe Islands where cliff top cairns warned navigators of the dangerous offshore rocks that were often concealed by fog.

In Africa the stone structures range from simple shelters to protect against the sun to Egypt’s magnificent pyramids and burial mounds that conceal incredible treasures. From afar these stone edifices have an imposing presence. As we get closer we become aware that each

In Asia in South Korea rock balances are common on mountain hiking trails. They are also found next to Buddhist Temples where the tradition is to add another rock on top of the existing balance to generate good luck. This ancient custom is in honor of Sanshin the Mountain Spirit. In Nepal and other places influenced by Tibetan Buddhism it is common to see many stones carved with mantras or symbols piled up in chairs by the roadside.

Travis thinks about the energy it takes for life to exist on this planet and Travis wrote, “Looking back, I realize it was in that moment that I discovered the abundant energy of our universe. I cut through the industrial illusion that plagues our modern society. We are all taught energy is available at three dollars a gallon. That you can be abundant only with a big house and a fancy car is a huge lie and one rock allowed me to see through this illusion.

Think about the energy it takes to power every single ocean wave. The energy that has kept the Earth spinning for almost a billion years or the energy that powers the sun. Abundant forces surround us and we can feel this abundance in one breath if we fully open ourselves to it.

Sheryl says So beautifully and poetically with a vision that shows us that energy is all around us within us and we are part of the eternal energy of Universal life.

An understanding of the power of breath is intrinsic for good health and any spiritual practice or creative journey. v Bringing your attention to the breath helps you become less reactive in stressful situations and make enjoyable situations even more pleasurable. Connecting with the breath also happens to be one of the keystones in rock balancing. Whether stuck in traffic enjoying a meal with loved ones or folding laundry just breathe. Listening to someone complaining about your shortcomings just breathe. This too shall pass.

In rock balancing as in life every fall, every failure leads to learning about what went wrong. We can rise from our failures to achieve the greatest victories in life—but only if we keep our attention on our breathe.

Travis shares his discovery of the golden ticket and the world’s greatest gift. Every person on Earth has this gift and will also eventually lose it. I am talking about the gift of life as a human. Out of the dark void of space came your heartbeat. From that heartbeat came breathe and consciousness—and unfurling like the leaves of a plant, the ability to think feel and create.

As humans we can create fire with flints and take a pile of rocks and balance them in a way that doesn’t seem possible. We can create technology that has a positive impact as well as design bombs that kill millions of people. The mind is a powerful tool so it’s important to use it positively

Although we have all been born lucky Travis journey has led him to discover that people view their life as either a blessing or a curse as either hard or miraculous. He has encountered people whose positive energy fills us with joy in an instant of meeting them. We also meet people who are deeply suffering.

For those who discover life truly is a gift a golden ticked to unlocking abundance and love is the path to true happiness. The choice about what to do with your golden ticket is entirely you. We suggest you use the breath to move yourself forward on your individual quest connecting to greater energy and possibilities for achieving your soul needs.

Rock balancing helps us honor the environment and express gratitude and guides us to love ourselves and life more. In order to make the most amazing and connected rock balances we must honor the environment and express gratitude on a daily basis therefore raising the collective positive energy of the world so we can achieve great things. In my experience those who have trouble giving themselves gratitude frequently overextend themselves and are inclined to try to make others happy before they make themselves happy.

The breathe keys that helped Travis select his very first stone at the bottom of that river bed are listed here.

    The Breathe Keys are:

Life is a gift—embrace it with every breath. Breathe mindfully for clarity and connection. Remember how you feel during meditation. Describe that feeling in one word. Allow this word to become your mantra during times of peacefulness and also during times of chaos.

As you connect with this first rock, use it as a shield of gratitude behind which you can turn and face your fears.

Travis would like readers to remember to explore the idea of being alone together. Think about how everyone has their own unique personality and yet despite these differences we are all united. You and I are all one and everything in the universe is connected. We are all connected because we share the same earth, breathe the same air, and see the same moon and sun in the sky. Therefore know that you are not alone.

I want to thank Travis Ruskus for writing a beautifully artful and poetic view of how to engage with life through a practice of rock balancing meditation being in nature and living life to its fullest. Along with the beautiful photos and insightful quotes the reader is able to gain a clearer way to appreciating themselves and others without fear.

In summarizing today’s episode of “Healing From Within” I must say that in my travels I have seen these beautiful rock sculptures and always took note of them in my heart and mind and today have seen that the reason they spoke to me as they did to Travis is because it was another beautiful connection to Spirit and the divine and harmony peace and balance and a help along the journey of the soul finding itself once again in this physical world where sometimes pain sorrow or trauma may surface but helping us find ways to move past it all for once again aligning to the best of the energy within and around us. It is in finding tools gratitude mantras and like minded people that we find greater love for Self others and life in all its wonderment.

Travis and I would have you begin to feel and know that along your journey of life there will be a moment when you can feel that spark of divinity within your heart and soul and breathe in life in its infinite potential and love and then together, we may begin to change the world as Travis did one rock at a time.

  • Making a Difference as an Immigrant in America

Welcome to “Healing From Within.” with your host Sheryl Glick, author of The Living Spirit: Answers for Healing and Infinite Love who is delighted to welcome Arun K. Singh M.D. author of Your Heart My Hands a story of an immigrant’s remarkable journey to find the American dream and become one of America’s preeminent cardiac surgeons.

Sheryl is delighted today to share the perspective of Dr. Singh who came to America in the 60’s as a young physician from India to be able to find a way to support himself and his family in India and eventually choosing America as his home and all the lives that were helped as a result of his choices to succeed and persevere often against challenging odds and also due to his desire to be part of American life.

As listeners of the show are well aware Sheryl and her guests share intimate insights into the nature of our human and spiritual essence and our hopes for uniting this dual nature to find health truth prosperity and happiness. By knowing more about who we are, where we have originated from in a metaphysical sense we learn how to manifest a healthy self-investigative process, master our emotions and live in harmony and balance with nature man and the universe.

In today’s show Dr. Arun Singh will share his journey from rural India arriving with five dollars in his pocket sharing proof that hard work persistence and grit can overcome the most discouraging obstacles and will also share his views on life and the health care system that deserve our attention

When asked to think back to his childhood in India to remember a person place or event that might have been a signal to them or others of the interests and lifestyle they would pursue as an adult for it seems our story is written in our soul energy and often signs show us the path we are meant to follow. Arun immediately mentions his very devoted and strong willed mother who helped him with health challenges and injuries to his hands when he was young. Arun grew up in Deoghar a city in northeastern India and in 1944 when he was born it was a nation poised for partition into two states—today’s Indian and Pakistan. It was a violent time, a time of upheaval when society was divided not only between Hindus and Muslims. There were those who had adopted British western democratic ways and on the other side nationalists fighting for independence, self-rule and a return to India’s original culture and languages. Arun embodied the tumult of the times and on two separate occasions both his hands were crippled and he had to have painful treatments to regain the use of his hands. Had he been in America he would have been labeled a juvenile delinquent who ran with a bad crowd and got into trouble skipping school and defying authority.

Then there was Arun’s learning disability although it wasn’t recognized much at that time..Suffering from dyslexia I couldn’t read or write well and I had to find other ways to grasp information. Arun discusses dyslexia and the challenges he faced in dealing with this learning disability while intellectually quite gifted he did have to find alternative ways around these issues dealing with processing information and his delivery of information. Many people afflicted with dyslexia have difficulty spelling and enunciating words. Sometimes words come out garbled. The problem is not in intelligence: it’s essentially a congenital malfunction in the brain. The cause of dyslexia is a glitch within the language system. Most humans can instinctively and effortlessly articulate the building blocks of words called phonemes. But for those with dyslexia the phonemes are less sharply defined so they are not able to properly construct and articulate words..(example confusing the word cat with scat.) When giving a speech Arun didn’t take the chance on reading it he memorized it. Arun used a system of code words and acronyms to remember strings of facts or terminology. (Example: Veins arteries and nerves go in that order..V A N using the first letter of each word to remember the sequence.)

Arun faced many other setbacks in India including his father”s doubts about his future and possibly growing up to be a beggar on the streets due to his hand injuries which greatly influenced him. Interestingly both his maternal and paternal grandfathers were physicians and your fathers father was a surgeon. However he was staunchly anti British and pro independence and came from a higher caste than your mother who was the daughter of an Anglicized pro Empire Indian. They were so different and your father’s father never accepted his marriage from a lower social stratum. So many years ago, and yet the political and religious differences here both in this country and indeed the world still suffer from the way people separate themselves, rather than accept the human need to find love and service to others, looking past culture, economic problems, religion and ancient traditions such as a caste system.

As a young doctor Arun saw the deficiencies in the hospital he worked at in India where adequate equipment and staff as well as proper care was nearly non-existent but still there were idealists and people who tried to do their best and trusted in a higher hand to help them.

Arun tells us about the hand injuries he had in India as a boy and writes, “When I was seven I was climbing a guava tree ten to twelve feet off the ground and the monkeys came and there is nothing cute about a Langur monkey about to strike so Arun fell and his right hand and elbow took the brunt of the fall and there was a big gash to the forehead There was nerve damage to the elbow and in a few days there was much swelling and the cast was removed and it was discovered that the hand had been set the wrong way. Again in six weeks the cast was removed and the broken bone had healed, but Arun’s right arm and elbow wouldn’t bend. He couldn’t pick things up, couldn’t write, couldn’t feed himself. While Arun had the cast on he’d developed pneumonia and because of poor sanitary conditions had a severe case of hepatitis. The surgeon cautioned his parents that with his liver in a bad state, general anesthesia given in order to break the arm and reset it was extremely dangerous.

During this challenging time you found out your father had been married before and his wife, son and daughter had been killed in a train crash. Then by marrying beneath his caste he had lost his father and the family who disinherited him. After months Arun was taken back to the doctors who broke his arm and reset it once again. There was some improvement and with the help of his mother and strength building exercises at home Arun began to get stronger in time. Years later when in a kite flying contest Arun fell into a ditch and broke his left arm just as severely as he had broken his right arm years before.

Sheryl says that some may call this a coincidence, but there are no coincidences nor random happenings. It seems the soul often calls these events to us perhaps to overcome some karmic condition or to enact great and necessary change. Even accidents are not random but part of a bigger pre- designed plan by your soul for specific results to be achieved.

Arun writes “More than six decades later these two childhood accidents are still with me. While my mother’s primitive physical therapy regime certainly helped it couldn’t totally undo the long term damage. My left arm is an inch or so shorter than my right. Decades later both my hands and arms are atrophied. While they never fail me when it comes to wielding a scalpel, I often lack the strength necessary for simple daily activities like working a screwdriver or opening a jar.”

Sheryl says, “All of us carry the scars, fears, and often limitations of our childhood…Some problems were self-created. Other fears were given to us by parents and teachers in hopes of protecting us, but often did just the opposite and limited us from stepping out of our comfort zone or forgiving ourselves or others for events that may have hurt us.

Arun tells us he arrived in Massachusetts in 1967 in the city of Worcester at the only hospital that would accept him. At that point with exactly five dollars in his pocket he soon realized that many Americans thought of people from India as snake charmers, half-naked Gandhi like ascetics or characters from the Jungle Book. Indeed Arun’s country with 1.3 billion people was most identified with not the people, but an animal: the elephant, and a building, The Taj Mahal. A lot of this was simply cross cultural ignorance, but in the late sixties there were other forces I became painfully aware of. The fact that I was non-white led to suspicion, and I was unwelcome in some quarters. Of course not everyone was adverse to befriending a man from India and I began to date Barbara Schachter, a pretty nurse from Queens College nursing school. We married and meanwhile, my career was taking shape as a surgical residency at Columbia University and then cardiac training at Rhode Island Hospital-Brown University. Arun also participated in a year of advanced training at London’s Hospital for Sick Children where he learned the delicate science of surgery on young hearts. If you ask surgeons why they choose this branch of medicine they usually respond that it is because of the effect of saving lives as well as wanting to avoid surgery as much as possible except for patients where the choice is clear: either surgery or death.

Sheryl brings up the concept of racism which is all we hear about these days in politics and asks Arun how racism affected him when he first got to America or because he was an immigrant? Arun expresses he felt exploited at the first American hospital he worked at and there were areas he was not invited to go into. While Arun was asked to finish his surgical training in that hospital, he told the doctor offering him this arrangement that he had spent most of his time in the library, not operating room and had travelled ten thousand miles to be here and learn surgery. His plan was to spend one year in Massachusetts and then seek admission into an American University hospital. The doctor laughed and said the residents in American university hospitals are American. That was in 1967. I don’t believe it is that way any longer. Arun declined the offer and later received a call from another friend, a doctor from India. Mohan said they were looking for a few residents at Columbia University Medical Center in New York so because Arun was not inclined to take a position at a hospital that was a dead end for him, he made the right choice to wait for an opportunity that was in alignment with his hopes and dreams which got him to New York. They did want Americans but many doctors were in the armed forces because of the Vietnam War.

Dr. Singh tells us of an inspiring relationship in his professional life. His mother’s father was an ENT physician and Arun as a boy spent a lot of time while he was attending to patients. His uncle Shivnandan was also a physician and so was your father’s father who was a surgeon and Arun’s father was a teacher. So he was surrounded by people who served the community and were influences for living a healthy lifestyle. As a student when you returned home to India to discover your father had a stroke and was in the local hospital you describe the very poor condition at that time in the hospital. Seeing your father paralyzed you realized that your dad had lived for a long time with tremendous guilt and never been allowed by his parents to forget the shame and stigma of marrying out of his caste. Arun’s father also carried a second serious emotional wound and could never forget the tragic death of his family from his first marriage. Arun realized that his father quite possibly suffered from depression which made him appear as cold, distant, inflexible and unloving. His father had a government job and there was no health insurance. There was no safety net. The extended family was expected to help. Arun’s father did recover and returned to work within a year’s time. I now understood how important it was for me to finish medical school and be able to help my family.

Dr. Arun Singh would most like readers to take away with them after reading Your Heart My Hands his belief that Miracles happen and dreams can become reality. Arun had decided to go to America to become part of a new crop of surgeons. In 1967 Rene Favaloro an immigrant from Argentina working at the Cleveland Clinic introduced the coronary artery bypass surgery for the relief of angina and to prolong the life of patients with blockage of the coronary arteries. This breakthrough procedure would offer hope to millions of people. Arun’s mentor Dr. Singh in India saw this as a way for medicine to be changed and suggested that Arun be part of the revolution and go to America. Having no money for the move to America something miraculously happened that made it possible. In 1970 Arun’s younger brother was the sole winner of the 1.5 million rupees lottery. It was a break for the family and freed Arun from the responsibility of sending most of his paycheck home. Arun had passed the ECFMG test and was accepted into a graduate medical program where they paid his room and board and also his plane ticket to Massachusetts. And as a surgical intern would be paid $4, 383 a year. The journey was hard and long both to America and past the restrictions of a caste system and the problems of his family and cultural restrictions but there were always helpers along the way and love and learning to know that the complications in life are only opportunities for the soul and spirit to soar and for personal achievement as well as serving society to emerge strong.

I want to thank Arun K. Singh M.D. author of Your Heart My Hands for a soul searching look at Self, life, and the human as well as divine experience. An immigrant’s remarkable journey to become one of America’s preeminent cardiac surgeons and also the story of trust in a Universal plan for living a purposeful and healthy life as written in a soul’s destiny is the fabric of this very interesting life story.

In summarizing today’s episode we have discovered that nothing is impossible when you have the love of a mother grandmother family and a strong family resolve to work cooperatively for the success and well being of all the members of the family. Such is the culture that Arun Singh M.D. was born into, along with the problems of his childhood which ultimately made him triumph over serious handicaps to become an accomplished cardiac surgeon. Tenacity, stubbornness and curiosity along with perseverance and trust all lead to the many successes personally for Dr. Singh and to the thousands of patients Dr. Singh was able to save during the course of his long professional life. While he observed that the men in his life were complicated and operated much differently than the compassionate women, he did benefit from their example of hard work and respect for a way of life that offered stability.

Dr. Singh writes, “Throughout my career I’d tried to focus on the thing I cared more about and the thing I did best: my patients and their treatment. I was never interested in becoming an administrator. I also tried to avoid getting caught up in the politics that are an inevitable part of any large organization. But change was coming to the medical field and nothing could keep me from being affected. The changes include the mergers, the demise of the solo practice, the rise of large physicians groups and networks as well as complex new billing systems and the increasing costs of the healthcare system.”

Dr.Singh and Sheryl would have you know though we are aware of the challenging and changing times for the medical field and the effects of political social economic and global changes we advise our listeners to remember the reason we have all chosen a physical life, and that is to remain steadfast to that wise inner voice or intuition that reminds you that you are indeed more than the physical world, and must strive for personal excellence resilience love of life family and spirit at all times.

  • Spiritual Living for Healing Joy Prosperity

In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” your host Sheryl Glick author of Life Is No Coincidence: The Life and Afterlife Connection and The Living Spirit which share stories of spiritual communication healing energies miracles and ways to reconnect to your intuition and soul guidance system for living a healthier happier life welcomes e Jeff Cox editor of Paul’ Brunton’s work in a new book Instructions for Spiritual Living.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” have come to expect Sheryl and her guests share amazing intimate stories and insights into the metaphysical world of energy and eternal life forces which help us know more about our human and energetic influences so we may experience the best of both worlds. As spiritual beings having a physical life there are infinite possibilities for self-discovery and investigation and the mastering of our human emotions for an improved human condition.

In today’s episode of Healing From Within we will discover how Jeff Cox was guided while in College to the teachings of Paul Brunton and in the early 70’s moved to an area around Ithaca New York where he and other students studied with Anthony Damiani a close student of Brunton’s We will discuss Brunton’s widely esteemed integrated spiritual teachings and meditation systems into a practical approach for contemporary life.

Jeff shares how when he thinks back to his childhood and and his Catholic upbringing he remembers when he was around eight years old he had painful stomach aches and remembers asking God to heal him and it ultimately worked. Sheryl shares with Jeff as a sensitive empathic intuitive child aware of a higher force of being or God she also had many stomach aches but didn’t know to ask for a healing. Quite funny how she eventually became a Reiki hands on spiritual healer and now knows to ask for God’s help all the time.

Jeff goes on to tell us about Paul Brunton and why he was so highly regarded. Paul Brunton or “PB” as he preferred to be called, was a gentle man from whom an aura of peace and kindness emanated. His deep understanding of the spiritual life was forged in the crucible of experience and his spiritual depth shines through his writing. PB provides instruction to guide one’s development in three fundamental areas: in a full course of the stages of meditation to deepen one’s inner life: in the process of self-examination that roots obstacles out of one’s character: and in the unfolding of full awakening that includes wisdom in action. As he makes clear, the living expression of realization is a life of service to the inner well spring of wisdom as well as to others.

What distinguishes this book from others on the spiritual path may be in describing perhaps the adventure of meditation. PB writes, “ It has been customary for learned professors of the metaphysics of psychology to teach that consciousness always implies a relation to an object because it is always directed toward something. While this is true, it is true only at the level of ordinary experience. It is no longer true on the level of the highest type of mystical experience. Here consciousness can exist without any relation at all for it can be directed toward its own self. The world of ordinary experience is not the last possible one. There is a deeper and diviner world, or as in Wordsworth’s good phrase, an unknown mode of being, open to our adventuring. We have not yet attained true self-consciousness: we live too completely on the lower level of our existence for that. It is indeed time we take full possession of ourselves. For the experience of thousands of people throughout history situated in every station of life has confirmed the reality and attainability of the transcendental state. However, it is relatively on a few sensitive persons who have heard these mystical overtones of human existence. Yet we should not regard the mystic as a highly specialized type of human being. He or she is like ourselves but has had the vision and patience to follow up an act of faith with a long drawn series of active experiences to test the truth of that faith. Therefore we are all connected to this field of higher life but some are unable to invest the time and attention consistently necessary to know and utilize its wisdom.

Sheryl says that the reality and awareness of PB is entirely correct for she has spent the last 25 years mingling within that higher state of energy or Universal Source while in meditation and sometimes even with her eyes open can drift into that higher zone of peace love and Universal Source. Sheryl has tried to share the magic with as many people as possible for we are all the sons and daughters of that creative force known as Universal Energy …the Divine or God and have within us the wisdom to create with our thoughts which are part of that energy, whatever we focus our attention and actions on… In regard to that in her book The Living Spirit she wrote, “ As I began to step outside my comfort zone, I realized that there were thousands of people just like me, who had been thrust into a new state of awareness of life beyond the physical plane. Once that happened, it was impossible to go back to that three-dimensional way of thinking. Suddenly the concerns of everyday living like worrying about paying the rent and managing our family and careers was no longer enough. We were seeking something greater: we were seeking the truth of why we are all here and our connection to what is beyond us. Throughout the amazing journey that followed I learned several truths. The first is that there is indeed an afterlife: the second is that the separation between this world and the next is not a thick impenetrable wall, but a thin veil that allows our loved ones in spirit to communicate with us, and we with them. They assist us in making the choices in this life that prepare us for the next dimension in that world. The assistance received from spiritual influences will be in our proportion to our wish for help and to the effort we expend in our self-growth process in this lifetime.”

Jeff goes on to discuss Paul Brunton’s view on the need for teachers or gurus vs. going it alone. Whether we have a teacher or not spiritual development is fraught with complexities and challenges Paul Brunton offers transformative wisdom that aids our understanding of what the spiritual journey entails and helps point the way when the way is uncertain. This is why meditation which is the art of introverting attention is so needful. By means of our own mind we can discover the Soul. The introverted consciousness, turned away from the five sense activities to contemplate itself, first feels the presence and later becomes aware of the Divine Mind behind it.

There is a chapter on probations and tests of the aspirant. PB wrote, “To master desires and to overcome passions and to ennoble emotions self-reform and self-purification are the first fruits of philosophy. Thus an interval of long probation must inevitably pass before the results of this effort can become apparent in thought and action. The task before us is really a tremendous one, requiring our whole nature and our best mind. Candidates for initiation into the great mystery schools of antiquity were subjected to arranged tests and ordeals that determined the fitness of a candidate for entry. They even brought the candidates into surrounding and among individual whose powerful temptations to their sensual desires had to be overcome. The farther we advance the more formidable and less recognizable will be the obstacles trials and temptations we will have to overcome. One of the strange methods used by the powers to test us will be to arrange coincidences in our external life cycle. Within a short time of our solemn renunciation of a certain thing it will be offered to us. Some coincidence may be evil or good. If we are able to renounce the desirable object person or thing, where the ego has but to stretch and practice self-abnegation we may remember the warning of Awhadi a medieval Persian mystic: When Fortune’s cup into your hands doth pass, think of the headache as you raise the glass!”

If spiritual help is to be given in the way it ought to be given—as an altruistic service—no payment should be taken not even in the least obvious and disguised form. When we are sufficiently advance even the notion of accepting voluntary offered contributions will be repellent. Spiritual teachers, above all others are expected by God and others to be the first to follow their own teachings and to practice the virtue that they inculcate.

The importance of grace for Paul Brunton is absolute for in finding the Oversoul which is the goal of all spiritual pursuits grace is always available. If in the first stage of our adventure with meditation to discover the Oversoul involves an eager willed endeavor of the mind, the final one involves a quiet passive surrender of it. If the one depends wholly on the aspirant’s own exertions, the other depends wholly on the Overself’s bestowal of grace. In both the first and second stages that is, in concentration and meditation, the will is eager and active. We have absolutely nothing to do except be content and receive what the Higher Self graciously bestows upon us.

The state of attentive absorption is not a passive one. How could it be when the mind must be made strong enough to endure the strain and steady enough to hold the stillness perfectly when the thoughts are dropped. We must not be vague hazy or purposeless when we sit down to receive should not seek a mere blankness. On the contrary we must be fully alert and attentive positive in attitude and definite in understanding what we are trying to do. There must be a definite subject for our thoughts to start with and only afterward an object in repressing those thoughts. Only then may we become receptive and expectant:

We might feel that PB felt enlightenment would include discovering the foundations of a meditative practice and the need for solitude and time to cultivate the inner life in both metaphysical and mystical phases is the first imperative on the road to enlightenment. Solitude is needed because the presence of others definitely disturbs the emptying process. Time is needed because the mind is habitually filled with thoughts of the outer world: it is essential to totally empty the mind of thoughts for a while—regularly habitually and deliberately. Without a determined use of willpower, it is, however, hard for most persons to get solitude or find time. …The mystic who has learned the art of creative solitude can hear a mental voice in its inner silence. Thus for him or her, the loneliness that is maddening for some is enlightening. Also for reaching a state of enlightenment for a certain period each day there must be a separation from all usual physical labors and intellectual activities, a period where we can become and remain bodily still and mentally quiet. This is indispensible to achieving spiritual progress on the path to enlightenment.

All ordinary concentration concerns the form side of life, not its essence. Mystics may not indeed possess a greater concentration than others are able to show at their best, by giving it inward direction they use it to detach themselves from external, to weaken their belief in Matter’s reality, and to become spiritually self-aware. In your innermost being you are already as divine as you are ever likely to be. Hence no interior training can give you what you already possess, but a suitable training can help to give you the consciousness of what you possess. No practical system can develop a Soul for you, for it is already there but an adequate system or practice of meditation can lead you into awareness of it.

Through insistent practice and patient cultivation we can make this turning point to the inner world, this silencing of body and mind, just as easy to do eventually as it may be hard work to do at the beginning. We have reached the most critical and most important part of our adventure in meditation. It is the borderline where our own effort must gradually cease and the Soul’s effort must commence. Thus we will introduce nothing to impede the holy presence’s movement stealing over the body and taking hold of the mind.

Real meditation is an intuitive process or a connection to the Soul Higher Self or Overself. Tensions and thoughts and cares that preoccupy your busy hours slow us from reaching this intuitive essence of connection. We must lift ourselves out of the stream of personal life. It must, in short start and end with one theme: the Overself. Hence we must begin to meditate by withdrawing our thoughts from our own affairs and those of the world, fixing them instead on the object of our quest, the Overself.

When we go into silence, when we sit to meditate so we should first clear all the day’s business or occupations of our mind. We should let the door shut on the outside world but also on the inside world where trivialities routine business affairs angers resentments irritations and passions are native inhabitants. Equally we should let the past go and disdain the future. We are there to engage in a holier business than that in which the world usually engages, to follow a diviner occupation than the personality’s fated round and to lift our thoughts to higher levels.

Jeff hopes readers take away with them after reading Instructions for Spiritual Reading what Paul Brunton wrote about the Integral Path where he states, “Meditation alone is not enough.” Meditation may advance us in our vocation as a mystic, but will now be sufficient by itself. What is still required beyond meditation exercises is that we should become philosophical mystics should unfold the possibilities of our whole psyche and not only our intuitive ones. The effort to attain spiritual awareness is not only a matter of the acquisition of concentration: it is also a matter affecting every side of our life. If the quest were only a technical process and any problems with meditational technique it would be easy enough. But it is much more than that. It also involves the emotions, the desires, the will, and even an unknown factor—the Overself’s grace. Hence a purification, an analytical purification of the heart, an emotional pruning of it, is indispensible side by side with efforts to achieve the one pointed still mind.

We can make a success of meditation and deeper connection to higher Universal divine source if we have veneration and sensitivity and if we give it the character of an act of tender devotion and make it bear the quality of heartfelt reverence.

Sheryl says that in her years of intuitive healing sessions and volunteering for hospice her meditation practice, teaching Reiki energy healing to others, hosting an internet radio show “Healing From Within” for ten years has enabled her to talk to the most advanced metaphysicians on the planet and she had opened her heart mind and spirit to share the philosophical artistic creative and natural expression of the love and compassion of a higher force of creation or Universal Source which has led her to know “unconditional love” beyond the physical stresses of human life and an array of human emotions from fear and negativity to the higher vibrations of love compassion and joy as well as all other positive inspirational energies. As she surrendered to her destiny and life plan, called on help from Spirit, and said, “Yes” to all events even those outside her comfort zone she feels she has attained life’s highest goal being permanently stabilized or part of the Divine merging her physical life with her energetic Soul Overself to find peace unity oneness and a song in her heart”

We thank you Jeff Cox for sharing the wisdom of Paul Brunton’s search for awareness and higher consciousness through the many wonderful insights of Spirit and other souls on his own path to the clarity of knowing who we are as spiritual beings having a physical life always learning to balance our physical personalities with our inner heart soul essence for the best way to travel knowingly through the world of experiences.

In summarizing today’ episode of “Healing from Within” we have explored the lifetime expression of inner soul wisdom as expressed by Paul Brunton widely esteemed for creatively integrating the world’s spiritual teachings and meditation systems into a clear and practical approach to find your soul wisdom in modern day times. Paul Brunton provides instructions to guide one’s development in three fundamental areas of the spiritual path: meditation, self-examination and the unfolding of awakening. We have also found that only by exploring the process of self-examination and mastering our emotional landscape can we make real progress in understanding who we are and why we have chosen to experience a three-dimensional physical life so we may learn that in surrendering parts of the ego or personality we may go beyond the illusions of the physical world to follow intuition, align to Universal Energy or higher ideals, and tap into the soul wisdom and flow of all knowledge time and places from within. As we grow in the development of transcendental insight compassion and love blossom and spread into the world affecting each of us and inspiring others as Paul Brunton did can we find peace awareness and trust in a much larger view of individualistic and collective life stories.

As PB wrote, We are not really walking alone. The very love that has awakened within us for the Overself is a reflection of the love that is being shown towards us. Thus the very search upon which we have embarked, the studies we are making, and the meditations we are practicing are all inspired by the Overself from the beginning and sustained by it to the end….Even when we believe that we are doing these things for ourselves, it is really grace that is opening the heart and enlightening the mind from behind the scenes.”

Jeff Cox and I would have you know that the journey Paul Brunton lived in this lifetime and the truths that he shared in his writing are what he still pursues and shares with others in eternal life and for all time…for once someone has dedicated himself to living according to laws of Universal Source there is only that way to proceed.

  • Use Your Subconscious Mind for Creating Your Best Life

Welcome to “Healing From Within” with your host Sheryl Glick author of The Living Spirit Answers for Healing and Infinite Love a story of spiritual communication, healing energies, miracles, and ways to know you intuition for creating a healthier happier life experience and today am delighted to have Kimberly Friedmutter author of Subconscious Power help us explore life’s hurdles and achieve our dreams and goals.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” are well aware Sheryl and her guests share intimate stories of the metaphysical or multidimensional aspects of both soul and physical life in pursuit a greater understanding of our capacity through mind body spirit functions to create our best version of Self health happiness prosperity and improve the quality of life.

In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” Kimberly Friedmutter will share with listeners how living up to your dreams isn’t reserved for the exceptionally talented or lucky..It is our birthright to find happiness and through her rigorous training beginning with an international modeling career at age 14 to marrying a world renowned architect and designer and using her intuitive mystical gifts which she shares with people showing them how to tap into the source “within” them, helps foster creativity and courage to achieve positive lasting change and to live joyfully.

When Kimberly is asked to think back to her childhood and remember a person place or event that might have signaled to them or others the life path she might choose and the work or interests she might value as an adult she immediately remembers a woman who was not a regular participant in her childhood but who appeared one day and Kimberly was aware of a gentle delightful perfume and a woman who was quite beautifully dressed wearing tasteful make-up and who smiled with confidence and happiness and Kimberly knew in a flash that she wanted to be like this woman.

She goes on to tell of her early teenage years writing, “This all may seem glamorous—at fourteen, I was working abroad and had been signed with several world-class modeling agencies—but even then, I knew something was missing. Flash-forward a decade or so. I landed in Los Angeles and continued modeling for a bit, then got involved in acting. I continued to hone my curiosity about human behavior, listening to those around me, taking in information about how the world works and how people got what they wanted. This passion for people developed into a career as a radio talk show host for one of the largest stations in the LA area. On the surface, my life was on a roll. But as we know, all that glitters is not gold. Despite my very real outward success, I was still conflicted. Through hypnosis, I was able to confront my actions, dissect my own behavior patterns and relationship dynamics, and learn to love through my softness, not my efficiency and need to control. I had to let go of my inner “General” so I could welcome the real me. “

By assessing herself honestly—warts and all—and taking the necessary next steps, Kimberly got to her dreams and made them her reality, and so can you. Kimberly created a path for herself that has now evolved into the Six Principles of this book:

    • I acknowledged how I had created the situations in my life.
    • I reconnected with my subconscious.
    • I learned tools that allowed me to bring my subconscious and my conscious mind into alignment.
    • I cleared my path of false beliefs and bad habits.
    • I learned how to ask for what I want.
    • I created the energy to go for it.

Kimberly tells us something about the work and experiences that have enhanced her spiritual intuitive work and teachers or mentors who might be important to her.

She mentions Dr. Milton Erickson was one of the first clinicians to have extensively researched hypnotherapy and documented the resulting positive effects. Working during the 1950s and ’60s, Erickson used an approach that emphasized the individual nature of any type of therapeutic work, stressing that just one theory or approach was inconsistent with the nature of human beings. Given his own physical limitations (he was almost entirely paralyzed from polio), Erickson paid close attention to how we use nonverbal communication (body language and tone of voice, for example) to reveal what we might otherwise not express. He captured and described the experience of hypnotherapy, cataloguing hundreds of patients who made significant emotional and physical transformations through the tools of hypnosis, including indirect suggestion, the use of metaphors, and storytelling.

As an intuitive Kimberly helps others align to this inward source of information and describes 100 “less things” to do to facilitate a greater knowingness or connection to inner wisdom. She has discovered the power of her subconscious through my personal experience with hypnosis. Though she has always had a strong intuition her trust in the power of hypnosis deepened and expanded when she trained to become a certified hypnotherapist. This formal training enabled me to listen to and nurture this inner voice and pay attention to its wisdom. And then she began to change as a result. My hard-driven, conscious self stopped operating in overdrive and began to quiet down. Fine-tuning my relationship with my own subconscious also allowed me a new level of awareness, and I saw myself and the world around me with new, fresh eyes.

Sheryl says that she also studied hypnotherapy, but shortly after was guided by Spirit to study Reiki a hands on ancient healing system which puts the body into a state of relaxation and connection to that higher state of consciousness: our soul consciousness or inner guidance system. Spirit has many ways to connect us to remember our alignment to Universal Source or God and complete whatever mission we chose to accomplish in this physical life. Like Kimberly Sheryl is soul guide: a speaker of truth that Kimberly described she was aware of about the age of eight and which if lost can be regained later on to discover the true nature of our divine and physical lives. The clear and concise way Kimberly guide readers to discover this reality in her book is spot on right.

Kimberly writes, “Another way to appreciate the benefits of hypnotherapy and the principles of subconscious power is to see how they function similarly to meditation. Just as meditation has been used for centuries in Eastern cultures as a method for accessing a state of enlightenment and transcendence, hypnotherapy also provides a way to harness the power of the universe and bring it into the sphere of the individual.” Sheryl says hypnotherapy and energy healing Reiki sessions are similar in this way as they allow the body to access this higher realm of Universal wisdom for transformation and change.

Kimberly also says, “However, there is a very key difference between meditation and the process I describe here: meditation wants you to sharpen your awareness and become mind-ful; I’m asking you to zone out—let your mind wander so that in trance, you can hear, see, and feel what your subconscious has in store for you. And this is where the leap of faith comes in. Trance is immeasurable and mysterious. It is real and yet experienced as almost a haze of awareness.”

The subconscious has been defined and referred to in many ways. The concept first emerged as a translation from the French word “subconscient,” which was coined by the psychologist Pierre Janet (1859–1947) to refer to a “powerful awareness” that “lay underneath” conscious thought. A more mainstream definition that most people rely on is the thoughts and feelings that exist “below” the conscious mind. Indeed, ever since Freud popularized the term “subconscious” (which he later changed to the “unconscious”), psychologists and other theorists have gone back and forth without ever coming to a consensus about a preferred term, with some using “unconscious” and others, including myself, using “subconscious.” I prefer the term “subconscious” because it both offers a more positive connotation and feels more instinctive and closer to what we think of as intuition. Its power stems from the access the subconscious gives to our inner mind, which often knows more than we realize and always has a magical, elusive quality.

Kimberly also reminded us that, “When you meet someone new and have an immediate sense of unease for no obvious reason, that’s your subconscious talking to you. When something within you compels you to turn right instead of left on your usual route to the grocery store, that’s also your subconscious talking. When you go on a job interview and come away with a feeling in every cell of your body that this is the opportunity you’ve spent your whole life waiting for—that’s your subconscious. Just begin to pay attention to your subconscious or inner guidance system and you will find may ways to make the best decisions and choices for enhancing your life. In addition to the subconscious and the conscious mind, you will also learn about another dimension to this program: what I refer to as your Soul Spirit. Think of the Soul Spirit as God, your inner divinity, or your connection to the spiritual realm. This dimension is highly personal, as we all differ in our spiritual beliefs; however, its presence is not only ubiquitous but infinite because it connects you to the wider universe. Throughout the book, you will encounter reminders to connect to your Soul Spirit, which reinforces your access to your subconscious and seals your everlasting connection with the universe as a whole.”

We can cut through the clutter of everyday life and disappointment, let go of common yet false beliefs, move past anxiety and procrastination, and overcome obstacles by trying to leave non-helpful habits behind, turning to your Soul Spirit for sustenance and support. Indeed, for many people, meditating, immersing oneself in nature, and practicing yoga are a communing with the Soul Spirit, which can also lead to true satiety. It will help you gain a more regular and tangible access to this higher plane of travel—a path with no tolls and no need of GPS.

Try any one of these access points to the Soul Spirit:

    • Walk in silence in a natural setting—the mountains, seaside, or a wide-open field.
    • Submerge into water.
    • Listen through headphones to your favorite song.
    • Do a news or technology fast for several days.

Kimberly shares an “Hypnotic Hack: Move Through Hesitation”

We all can hesitate or procrastinate at times in our lives. Usually, the hesitation is a sign from your subconscious of some sort of emotional hitch—a question, doubt, or fear—about the pending activity. And obviously procrastination gets in the way of any movement at all—either toward or away. The key to getting past the hitch is to call upon your subconscious to reveal the source of the hesitation. This exercise can apply to big events in your life or the everyday chore that you always seem to put off. This hack utilizes your ability to ignite the responses you would like to have,

The six core principles include ways to Come Into Accountability Judge Thyself and Thy Neighbor and Give to Get.

Here are the Six Principles of Subconscious Power:

    • Principle One: Come into Accountability—You will learn to be nakedly honest with yourself so that you can become accountable for who you are, what you want, and where you’ve been. In other words, own who you are right now, with all your baggage, faults, mistakes, and glimpses of imperfections. This composite is the real you. Before you can access your subconscious directly, you want a clean slate.
    • Principle Two: Tap into Your Subconscious Power— You will learn to activate your subconscious so that you can grow your intuitive knowledge of yourself and bring your conscious mind into alignment. This basic building block of my approach has many access points; you will find numerous exercises to help you tap into your subconscious.
    • Principle Three: Move Toward or Away—Our actions speak louder than words. You will learn to assess how you respond to situations and people in either of two ways: by approaching a situation or by retreating or avoiding it. Understanding your orientation gives you a heightened sense of self-awareness, an important building block for growing your subconscious power.
    • Principle Four: Judge Thyself and Thy Neighbor— Hearing the subconscious clearly requires that we use the good judgment of the subconscious, instead of resorting to the overly reactive or biased decisions made by an overtaxed conscious mind. In addition, by using our relationships as a lens, we can practice the good judgment of our subconscious to keep us on our path.
    • Principle Five: Give to Get—Getting what you want from life means accepting that you are entitled to get it. And attaining your dreams and well-deserved happiness depends, in part, on how well you can leverage opportunities and situations in your life. This “golden principle” of the subconscious is like a secret passage to get what you want, all while you honor the highest part of another person.
    • Principle Six: Play Big—In this final principle, you will assume the posture that will make your goals, dreams, and aspirations come into reality. Do you want a happier relationship? Do you want a new career? Do you want to stop procrastinating or worrying so much? Do you simply want to like yourself more? Whatever your wish, you will come to name it and go for it. This principle brings your subconscious into full alignment with your conscious mind and the collective energy of the universe so that you can make real.

Some effective subconscious raising exercises to help reduce stress improve sleep overcome addiction get fit and achieve career or relationship goals are describe in Subconscious Power.

“Becoming aware of your thoughts and the language you use constantly which either reinforce negativity and obstacles or positive action is important. Language is powerful. Consider how using these phrases in your daily vernacular can create vulnerabilities to health issues, accidents, or other unwanted events. Look at the contrast between the phrases below: Instead of saying, “I was shocked” . . . say, “I was amazed.” “That’s so weird” . . . say, “That’s so interesting.” “I was blindsided” . . . say, “I was surprised.” “It’s going to be so hard” . . . say, “It’s a challenge to overcome.” “One of the pitfalls” . . . say, “One of the opportunities for growth . . .” This exercise is very effective for coming into accountability, helping bring forth awareness of the power of our words. With this new awareness of your own internal representations, try to create some change in how you experience yourself with others. In some ways, you can think of this exercise as an act of forgiveness or compassion. You can also think of it as simply a way to move out of a negative interpretation of an event.”

Whether a hurt done to us is real or imagined almost doesn’t matter—the subconscious takes it in. In order to un-cause negative or difficult events, we need to first extend the olive branch to ourselves— forgive ourselves and accept that we are all doing the best we can. In this exercise, you will come to understand how you contribute to what happens to or around you. I call this exercise “This Was Me.” perception of an experience with someone else and let it go so that it does not hold you back.

Kimberly and Sheryl suggest people think of happiness and how might they go about achieving this state of being.

Sheryl says, “Happiness and success are judged differently by many people but both are the suggestions of the heart and mind to appreciate the gift of life…In her book The Living Spirit Sheryl wrote, “A positive thought process definitely could improve any situation. Correcting any mistake in our actions or behaviors does not guarantee defeating any disease or challenge in our Life. It will always be good for our soul to experience a better way to act rather than react. However, we each come with a life plan and a time to depart our physical life, but while here must use every opportunity to reveal the best within ourselves. That is the way to peace happiness and a true understanding of who we are as immortal souls having a physical life for the purpose of finding once again how wonderful each moment in time is.”

A patient of Kimberly expressed a way he was able to understand life and himself and come to a larger view of life… Brian, a fifty-eight-year-old physician, shared this with her: “I was a skeptic. As a medical doctor, hypnosis seemed like fluff. But when I was finally able to lose twenty pounds and my sleeplessness disappeared, I became a believer. I’m not a very religious person, but now I truly believe that there’s more to reality than meets the naked eye. I used to wake up constantly throughout the night—now I can sleep through like a baby.”

Kimberly suggests that in today’s modern world politics economics and society as a whole seems unbalanced and challenged how might we begin to deal effectively with all that is going on. “The technology that’s designed to make our lives easier and more productive often leaves us feeling overwhelmed on a daily basis. At the same time, we’ve become separated from the natural world. This complicated, high-tech world has forced us to silence our subconscious and let our conscious selves take over. We have become too conscious, too driven, too obsessed. Where does this leave us? Disoriented, ungrounded, and stressed. We feel unbalanced, out of control, because we are disconnected from our subconscious, our inner, true self that knows best what we need to make us happy. By tapping into your subconscious, as Kimberly shows you how to do in this book, you will cut through the chaos and confusion of your daily life to know immediately, in the here and now, what you need—what your mind body, and soul require”

Hypnosis can offer men and women relief and release from various problems, in varying degrees of severity. Some people need to heal from past traumas. Others must get over failed relationships in order to meet a suitable mate. Other women and men come to Kimberly to lose unwanted weight that has completely consumed their vision of themselves and swallowed their hopes and beliefs in their own potential. Many clients start their journey by learning new ways to manage their anxiety, depression, and other emotional issues. Still other people come to a place of clarity and wholeness when they realize that their social or romantic entanglements are keeping them from success in other aspects of their lives—professional, creative, or spiritual. And still others, who may have reached massive success in one realm, come to discover, through accessing the power of their subconscious, even more satisfaction in another arena: a new career, for instance.

Sheryl and Kimberly tell us of enlightened moments or experiences that reminds them of how precious the gift of life is and the support we have from our subconscious alignment to the Universal Creative Force of Life.

Sheryl says…There have been many miracles and moments of true awareness, but, recently as a Reiki energy practitioner someone she works with told Sheryl that her daughter was pregnant and they had discovered a condition that would make it impossible for her to have a normal birth. In sending distant healing Sheryl sensed there were two vessels hanging very low in the pelvic area and while there was no pain it simply did not feel right. Months later she told Sheryl they had scheduled a caesarian delivery 6 weeks before the due date and she seemed noticeably worried. Again Sheryl sent healing energy this time expressing that it would be simply wonderful if the baby and mother have the easiest and best experience that would lead to the best results. A few days later the grandmother to be told, told Sheryl that everything had changed and it wasn’t necessary for her daughter to have an early delivery. She had a natural delivery and all went well for both mother and child. Sheryl reminded them that this was a blessed Reiki baby and a true miracle had happened.

Kimberly would like readers of Subconscious Power to remember that life is not a line, but a loop. In other words, by connecting with those loved ones who have passed away (a state of transformation that I refer to as “transitioned”), you will reinforce your Soul Spirit connection. Like the universal principle of the conservation of energy, we never cease existing; we simply change form. Think of how ice changes from solid to liquid to water vapor under the influence of temperature. Welcome to Healing From Within.” with host Sheryl Glick author or The Living Spirit Answers for Healing and Infinite Love which shares stories of spiritual awakening spiritual communication healing energies miracles and ways to discover and utilize your intuition for improving the quality of life and today welcome Eric Ehrke author of The Promise of Wholeness who is trained in Western and Eastern applied philosophy and integrative healing strategies that may lead to lasting peace and wholeness when integrated into your everyday life experience.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” have come to expect my guests and I share intimate insights into the metaphysical spiritual and physical aspects of our human and energetic qualities so we may begin to know who we are and how life serves us while we gather experiences and new perceptions creating and manifesting the best version of ourselves both in a spiritual and physical sense. We are indeed complicated beings and people who discover their inner soul essence and wisdom often have a more creative positive and joyful life journey.

In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” we will discuss a new foundation for profound living based on classical teachings and enriched by modern scientific psychological breakthroughs. We will discover the principles and values it takes to be happy and whole and find critical exercises for infantile childish and adolescent stress responses as we move towards lasting peace and well being.

When Eric is asked to think back to his childhood and remember a person place or event that may have shown him or others the adult they would become and the work and interests they would embrace as an adult he immediately remembers being bullied as a youngster and having a stutter as boys seems to have this issue more than girls. He remembers wanting to be a priest and like most sensitive and emphatic children they feel the energetic pull of the Universe and the sense there is much more to know than we are being told by societal structures parents teachers as we are on a self-investigative journey and living and feeling is the best way to remember our soul essence and true reality.

Sheryl shares that her mother told her she might be a “rabbison” some day or the wife of a Rabbi for she had that sense of wholeness or oneness with a bigger plan or universal source. Well as a priest or religious figure heals through love so do all people in the healing professions who ultimately wish to help others release fear misconceptions and find a road to freedom of the soul or peace and well being.

As a psychiatric social worker, clinical psychotherapist and transformational teacher for more than 40 years, Eric has witnessed both love and human angst on a daily basis. As a practitioner of family systems theory, I educate families, couples and bonded groups about intimacy and how to reach their full potential as a unified entity. And I teach people about unconscious empathy and how poor energetic boundaries affect their moods.

Discussions about life’s purpose always fascinated him but mostly, Marc watched people enduring love and true happiness prove to be elusive quarries and he noted when something worked or missed the mark. Resolving life’s paradoxes and the mysteries confronting people in their day to day lives became his profession but what philosophy, literature, and psychology teach us about love, happiness and suffering became his true passion. This book is a culmination of my discoveries, working observations, and practical suggested gleaned through my life time of wonder and because the resiliency of the human spirit inspired me, he studied under many traditional and transformational spiritual teachers.

The book is called The Promise of Wholeness: Cultivating Inner Peace, Mindfulness and Love in a Divided World. The promise of wholeness provides the ancient philosophical foundation and effective strategies to develop inner peace, mindfulness and loving relationships. Embodying immortal principles and developing effective practices to experience our divine origins in the midst of the divisiveness of everyday life are worthy goals. Reconciling our daily challenges and merging into mystical union with the divine makes humans feel whole.

Sheryl says it truly is by knowing you’re a spiritual being having a physical life and that your soul is immortal and will survive physical death, that you can live without fear and can embrace the beauty of life and love unconditionally all that is. Merging our physical and spiritual lives is the only way to find peace.

Plotinus is an ancient Greek philosopher who Eric discusses and shares with us how he is the father of the mind body and spirit movement two millennial ago. Plotinus was a major Hellenistic philosopher who lived in Roman Egypt. In his philosophy, described in the Enneads, there are three principles: the One, the Intellect, and the Soul. His teacher was Ammonius Saccas, who was of the Platonic tradition.

Plotinus’ doctrine that the soul is composed of a higher and a lower part — the higher part being unchangeable and divine (and aloof from the lower part, yet providing the lower part with life), while the lower part is the seat of the personality (and hence the passions and vices) — led him to neglect an ethics of … The Three Fundamental Principles of Plotinus’ Metaphysics. The three basic principles of Plotinus’ metaphysics are called by him ‘the One’ (or, equivalently, ‘the Good’), Intellect, and Soul . These principles are both ultimate ontological realities and explanatory principles.

Neoplatonism, on the other hand, seeks to locate the One, or God in Christian Neoplatonism, in the finite world and human experience. This is evidenced in Plotinus’s now-famous maxim that the Absolute “has its center everywhere but its circumference nowhere.”

Henosis is the Greek word for oneness/unity. Since time immemorial this universal concept has been championed with traditional wisdom ancient philosophy and theology. The psychoanalyst Carl Jung referred our shared human experience with the phrase “collective consciousness.” While physicists use the term quantum entanglement to describe how every particle is inherently connected to the whole. The missing link between the wisdom of ancient philosophy and the startling insights within modern psychology to transform suffering transcend circumstances and increase our capacity for love are explored in The Promise of Wholeness.

Philosophy literature psychology can teach us a great deal about love happiness and suffering? And Eric’s 40 years as a psychiatric social worker psychotherapist and transformational teacher has proven much of those modalites to be quite on target for understanding human and higher spirutal values. Sheryl says as an intuitive medium who picks up a great deal of information about clients from their energy field and from downloading universal information I have made the following observation about the states of happiness or suffering which are affected by our choices and mindset..In my book The Living Spirit I wrote, in response to a question often asked of me. How can I find peace and happiness in my life?” this is the answer I give them: Before there can be peace and happiness in a person’s life and in the world, every person must be responsible to do their own work about acknowledging what needs to change within their attitudes or actions so that they may better relate to the outer world. Finding true happiness and joy is the natural outcome of self-investigation. There are no short cuts. No one can make you happy or unhappy unless you give him or her the power to do that by surrendering or giving your own power away…We should aim to become a person who doesn’t find fault in others, moving past personal obstacles with courage, hope and faith to find peace. Be free of any influence of others that take that state of mind peace away from you.”

A discussion of the somatic empathy theory proves to be quite informative. “Somatic” comes from the Greek word somatikos which means concerning or effecting the body. Somatic empathy includes the absorption of contagious emotional energy, cognitions and felt sensations of others in our body. We are all interconnected and have empathic connections with others, unless something blocks our compassion. Internal awareness is a visceral (relating to deep inward feelings rather than to the intellect). Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, that is, the capacity to place oneself in another’s position. Definitions of empathy encompass a broad range of emotional states. Types of empathy include cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and .somatic…

We discuss what an empathetic person is called An empath is someone who is highly aware of the emotions of those around them, to the point of feeling those emotions themselves. … Many highly sensitive people (HSPs) are also empaths — but there may be a difference between empaths and HSPs.

An empath is someone who is highly aware of the emotions of those around them, to the point of feeling those emotions themselves. Empaths see the world differently than other people; they’re keenly aware of others, their pain points, and what they need emotionally. Marc and Sheryl are highly empathic and have learned to handle energy in ways that help rather than hinder themselves and others. It is a great gift but can cause problems if not understood and used to keep the empath safe from an overflow of external energy forces from people places and events.

But it’s not just emotions. According to Dr. Judith Orloff, author of The Empath’s Survival Guide, empaths can feel physical pain, too — and can often sense someone’s intentions or where they’re coming from. In other words, empaths seem to pick up on many of the lived experience of those around them.

    13 Signs of an Empath

    1. You take on other peoples’ emotions as your own
    2. This is the classic, number one trait of an empath. No matter what someone else near you is feeling, even if they think they aren’t showing it, you’re likely to pick up on it immediately. But more than that: you may actually feel the emotion as if it were your own, essentially “absorbing” it or sponging it up.

How exactly this works is a subject of some debate. But we do know that people who have high levels of empathy also have very active mirror neurons — the part of the brain that reads emotional cues from other people and figures out what they might be thinking or feeling. In other words, if you’re an empath, it’s likely that you can pick up on tiny changes in expression, body language, or tone of voice that others miss — and immediately sense what the person is feeling.

Those same active mirror neurons, however, mean that you basically live through the feeling as if it were your own. That can be a powerful gift, but also exhausting and overwhelming at times.
    3. Sometimes you experience sudden, overwhelming emotions when you’re in public

It’s not just in one-on-one conversation where you sense the emotions of others. It can happen at any time when there are other people around, and without warning.

If you’re an empath, it can be challenging to go into public spaces, because you may suddenly find yourself filled with an emotion that came out of “nowhere” — or, more accurately, from someone else in the area.
    4. The “vibe” of a room matters to you — a lot

Perhaps unsurprisingly, empaths are extremely sensitive to the “feel” or atmosphere of their surroundings. When surrounded by peace and calm, they flourish, because they take on those qualities internally themselves. For the same reason, places of beauty can be transformative for empaths, whether it’s a quiet garden, a lovely bedroom, or the halls of a museum. Likewise, chaotic or depressing environments will quickly pull the energy out of an empath.
    5. You understand where people are coming from

Empath expert Dr. Judith Orloff explains that this is the core trait of an empath — even more so than absorbing the emotions of others. After all, empaths can learn not to absorb emotions as much, and some empaths rarely “absorb” them at all. But all empaths are able to intuitively sense what someone is trying to express, even when they’re having a hard time getting it out. Empathy, after all, is fundamentally about understanding and connecting with others. And that’s what it means to sense where people are coming from.
    6. People turn to you for advice

With such insight, empaths are frequently sought out by their friend for advice, support, and encouragement. It helps that empaths also tend to be good listeners, and will often patiently wait for someone to say what they need to say and then respond from the heart.

If this sounds like you, you probably know that it can be hard at times, too — people don’t always realize how much of your energy it takes for you to be the listener an advice-giver, and some people take it for granted.
    7. Tragic or violent events on TV can completely incapacitate you

If you’re an empath, it doesn’t matter that a horrible event isn’t happening to you, you still feel it through your entire being. You may seem to “live through” the pain or loss of the event yourself, even if you’re thousands of miles away — or indeed, even if it’s a fictional event in a show. This reaction can be completely overwhelming at times.

Empaths, like HSPs, may not do well watching violence or human tragedy, even if it’s a movie that others find gripping.
    8. You can’t contain your love of pets, animals, or babies

Sure, everyone knows that babies are adorable little miracles, and dogs and cats are cute — but for you, those feelings seem to be much stronger. You may not be able to help yourself from gushing over someone’s lovely child, or immediately crouching down to show some love to a puppy. Some people might find your reaction “over the top,” but for you, how can anyone not react this way? In many ways, this is one of the many perks of being an empath. All your feelings, including positive ones, are turned way up.
    9. You might feel people’s physical illnesses too — not just their emotions

When someone is sick or injured, you might even go so far as to feel their ailment as if it’s your own. This doesn’t just mean feeling sympathy or concern for them, but having actual physical sensations like pain, tightness, or soreness in the same areas of the body. It’s as if your empathic brain is not only mirroring what the other person must be experiencing but also projecting that experience physically into your own body.

And it can be uncomfortable — even debilitating. It’s probably not a “gift” that most empaths love to have. But it’s also at the root of why empaths are such exceptional caregivers. Without this ability, they wouldn’t be able to truly connect with someone who is in pain, or get them just what they need to feel more at ease.

It’s not surprising that empaths are drawn to roles like nurse, doctor, elder care provider, or healer. If you can feel everyone’s pain, it would be surprising not to want to do something about it.
    10. You can become overwhelmed in intimate relationships

Relationships can be challenging for everyone. But imagine how much bigger those challenges are when you can sense every little mood, irritation or, yes, even lie from your partner. And positive emotions can also become overwhelming — as if the relationship may “engulf” you. Sound familiar?

But it’s more than that. Once you live together, the shared environment is also a hurdle. A cohabiting partner’s “energy” is always present for an empath, and can almost feel like an intrusion. Empaths view their homes as a sanctuary where they can get away from the constant demand on their emotional senses, and a partner changes that.

While some empaths choose to remain single for this reason, others learn to adapt — perhaps by having a room that’s their private space, or (extremely important) seeking a partner who respects their boundaries.
    11. You’re a walking lie detector

Sure, there probably have been times when someone successfully deceived you… but even then, you knew you were going against your gut instinct from the start. The thing about an empath’s ability to process even the tiniest social cues means that it’s almost impossible for someone to hide their true intentions. Even if you don’t know exactly what a person really wants, you know if they’re not being completely honest — or if they seem shifty.
    12. You can’t understand why any leader wouldn’t put their teams first

There are plenty of managers and group organizers who simply don’t pay attention to their team’s needs. If you’re an empath, this isn’t just rude or annoying — it’s a failure of leadership.

Partly, this is because empaths can make excellent leaders themselves, and when they do, it’s always by listening to their team and uniting people around shared goals. Empaths tend to be thoughtful and attentive, making sure each team member feels heard. The result isn’t just a happier group of people, it’s making better decisions by getting all the information.
    13. You have a calming effect on other people — and the power to heal them

It’s true. Just as people seek out empaths for advice, they also just feel more at peace in an empath’s presence. In fact, people often unwittingly seek out their most empathic friends during difficult times.

This is something you can develop and use to actually heal people, in the sense of helping them work past serious emotional baggage and overcome unhealthy patterns. But you can’t do so if you hide your sensitivity and empathy — you have to embrace your gift if you really want to make a difference.
    14. You cannot see someone in pain without wanting to help

Can you walk past someone who’s in need, without wondering how you could help them? Do you struggle to turn off your concern for others because “there’s a job to do”? If the answer is no — not even when you’re busy, not even when you’re rushed — then there’s good chance you’re an empath.

Eric also talks about the stories and dramas in our modern day or past societies. Society often believes criminals, terrorists and in our fairytales, witches are born wicked. But Eric has seen firsthand in his practice that these people were usually victims themselves before they began to victimize. Clans and communities create cultural storylines of “us vs. them” which the form of illusion corrupts, transforming people into adversaries to overcome. Some people transcend trauma while other unfortunately recycle the modeled templates of abuse and neglect they experienced. Suffering can, like it did with the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, increase our sensitivity and empathy, but blaming friends, family and adversaries for causing our troubles is simply a dysfunctional stress response, which momentarily pushes pain onto scapegoats. However, victimization can and often induces self-destructive tendencies or payback fantasies, only self love, social awareness, personal responsibility and the willingness to look past the illusions ensure our connection to humanity and divinity.

Getting back to Greek philosophy and “oneness: and how it can impact angst suffering and depression leads us to know that seeing life in a multi-dimensional way past the effects of our physical outside world is the way to freedom peace and well being of the heart mind and spirit.

Sheryl says that belief in more than the physical world affecting you and living with your intuition or inner guidance system knowing you are connected to all life and that the Universal Source of Life works with us while we are incarnated in physical form and that “Consciousness survives physical death” are all ways to learn more about your dual nature as spiritual beings having a physical life but ultimately returning to the Oneness of Eternal life. If you truly know this then you are able to accept all challenges as opportunities for self-investigation and self-mastery of your emotions so you can live a more positive productive purposeful and happy healthy life. Learning to know that the ego based reality is filled with illusion fear that leads us away from our heart or soul based truth is an important part of the key to the Greek philosophy of unity and wholeness.

I would like to thank you Eric Ehrke author of The Promise of Wholeness for a comprehensive integrative look at mind body spirit healing and awareness of how to reach states of higher consciousness for acceptance and ultimately mindfulness inner peace and love to thrive individually and hopefully in time collectively.

In summarizing today’s episode of Healing From Within we have tried to bridge the gap between the falseness of ego based realities societal misconceptions ancient ways of perceiving life so we may move into an inner based self healing awareness of energy and how it affects our health prosperity and happiness For in knowing about our dual nature as spiritual beings having a physical life we are able to transcend fear and false beliefs to find the truth of our eternal nature and life sustaining practices making ourselves and the world a truly dynamic environment for acceptance of all and for creating or manifesting our best lives.

As Eric wrote, “Love is fundamental to our explorations and to how humans become whole and eventually incorruptible. Love is like water, because it is forceful beyond measure and yet its basic nature is to yield and seek the low places, its fluid nature melts into other structures and gives life to everything it touches. Whatever happens is perfect when we love because, like water, love never loses its constitutional integrity and will continue to exist in its next location… people die without water and our heart and soul would suffer from a dearth of spirit without love.”

Eric and I would have you begin to observe the many miracles happening in your life and around you even though at times we face challenges that seem insurmountable. It is in the hope and faith that we are indeed part of a divine energetic force of life that we can find the peace and love that has always been within us. The Promise of Wholeness lies within you in the acceptance that you are part of Universal source and love and as such are eternal …there is no separation from this creative source and we are always evolving and manifesting our greatest potential.

Welcome to “Healing From Within” with host Sheryl Glick, author of The Living Spirit Answers for Healing and Infinite Love, a story of spiritual awakening, spiritual communication and transformation and ways to use your intuition for living your best life. Today we welcome James Templeton, author of I Used to Have Cancer a story of not giving up, especially when all avenues of conventional medicine fail, and finding the way back to health becomes a personal journey of courage and destiny.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” are well aware my guests and I share intimate stories that have guided us to understand life and death in its many layers of reality as we explore metaphysical aspects of energy and as a result find new ways to combine our spiritual and physical lives for greater happiness prosperity and health. We are indeed complicated humans.

In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” we will learn how James who was especially mindful and active in pursuing a healthy life routine as a result of his father and grandfather who had died of heart attacks at an early age and he wished to help himself avoid that prognosis but during a routine physical found out a mole on his body turned out to be a melanoma a dangerous form of skin cancer. James followed the conventional medical protocol including surgery radiation and chemotherapy but the treatments weren’t working. We will discover how a miraculous turn of events saved his life.

When asking James to think back to his childhood and remember a person, place or event that may have shown them or others the interests, work or lifestyle that would be important to him as an adult we learn that James had more loss in his young life than many people. He writes, “My mother died before I was two, so I really don’t remember her. I never had a chance to get to know my grandfather either. He died at the ripe old age of thirty-six, many years before I was born. I was told he died because he had a bad heart. My younger stepbrother died at the age of eight, never really getting to enjoy life. But when my father—Daddy—died unexpectedly of a heart attack when he was only forty-six, it affected me deeply, unlike anything that had affected me before. I became enraged that life had dealt me yet another blow. I’m deeply grateful for my sister Judy, who is two and a half years older and was my guardian angel. To this day there has never been an unkind word between us. Judy has been the thread that has held our family together over the years and provided me with the stability I needed.”

My sister Judy and I agreed we couldn’t have asked for a better father. He never had an unkind word for anyone and he was a talented man rich in all the things that mattered, kindness, character and loyalty and a rich love of his family. A machinist can trade he could build or fix anything. He took meticulous care of all that he did and everything he owned. He took me to little league and football games, hunting and my father remarried when I was four years old and Mama as I called her was always there for us and kind hearted. They had a son Melvin who was born with physical and mental disabilities and we all cared for him round the clock. He died when he was eight years old. James was seventeen when my dad simply had a heart attack and died. In my attempt to numb the pain and sadness of still another loss I did what a lot of people do which included self-medication, plenty of partying, overindulging in food and too many beers. I went on to college as my stepmother felt my Dad would have wanted that. James began taking criminal justice courses but soon discovered that was not the path for me. He worked for a father and son who owned a gas station and soon was able to purchase it and he and his new wife Melissa soon had three gas stations. Life was good.

While James knew it wasn’t possible to prevent every premature death he decided to do the one thing he could to help. He ran every chance he got—in the rain heat or bitter cold. He later realized he was running from fear but back then he thought he had found a way to sidestep his family’s curse—heart disease. Running also became a time for meditation and deep thinking and a way to feel fully alive.

After being told that the cancer had infected the lymphatic system and having surgery to remove lymph nodes in the groin and leg James was told with the hypothermia and chemotherapy treatments that there was about a twenty percent chance of surviving three to five years. His wife had left and here he was with this terrible prognosis.

Lying there in the hospital James felt miserable when the phone rang and it was Ron the preacher from Huntsville. He told James to get in there and fight and to beat this cancer. Here was a preacher sounding like a coach giving a pep talk but at that very moment I truly felt the presence of God The Creator, the Spirit and realized I needed help so James began to pray.

James then had three visitors who he felt made all the difference and were divinely sent to help him. The first knock at the door was Ronnie Davidge, a college friend James hadn’t seen in over seven years Ronnie had papers in his hand and showed James a special diet: the macrobiotic diet for cancer he had used successfully. The second knock at the door was Mama with a book in her hand Vitamin C and Cancer by Dr. Linus Pauling…..People who took high doses of Vitamin C tended to live a lot longer than people who didn’t.

The third knock at the door was the hospital psychotherapist who seemed to know a lot about the macrobiotic diet and felt it might be good for me. He also told JMWA about two other books Recalled by Life and Living Well Naturally both by Dr. Anthony J. Sattilarto

After beginning the extreme first hypothermia and chemo treatment and James would need 80 such treatments he was released from the hospital and returned home with his stepmother who helped him gather the foods needed for the macrobiotic diet. According to the macrobiotic lifestyle each mouthful of food should be chewed 50 times before swallowing. James ate brown rice after his walk for breakfast with some miso soup. For lunch he had leftovers from last night’s dinners. Little by little he began a stretching exercise called Dolin which along with stretching involves tapping on the different meridians an energetic healing approach. For breakfast there was aromatic grains, miso soup, some lightly steamed vegetables and condiments. We drank Kukicha a Japanese blend of stems stalks and twigs from evergreen shrub(Camellia sinensis)

One recommendation of the diet is to never go to bed until three hours after eating and sit up meditating or reading.. James also tried visualizations to see himself as healed and pain free.

After the next experimental hyperthermia and chemo treatment which was much more tortuous than before the doctor told him he wasn’t responding well and James decided not to take any more treatments. He headed to the Kushi Institute in the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts run by Michio Kushi to learn more about the macrobiotic diet.

Some of the lifestyle suggestions along with dietary requirements included:

Walk outside in the fresh air two times each day for thirty minutes or longer

Try to wear 100 percent cotton clothing next to skin and use cotton sheets and pillowcases. Cotton allows a smooth flow of energy with the environment.

Try to use natural quality body care products and cosmetics.

To minimize radiation exposure, limit television or exposure to other electronic artificial electromagnetic fields preferably to thirty minutes a day. Try to take regular brakes. If you work at a computer get up and stretch at least every hour.

Maintain a clean orderly home and environment. Keep green plants in your home and office to increase oxygen and improve air circulation. Try to keep active from morning to night. Greet everyone you meet and maintain active communications with parents, children and other relatives.

Light to moderate exercises, including yoga, martial arts dancing or sports.

Self-reflect a few minutes each day on your life and express appreciation to God, nature or the Universe. This may take the form of prayer meditation chanting visualization as well as creating healthful positive thoughts and images. Sing a happy song each day.

James found out something about the underlying and root causes of cancer that he had been unaware of.

At a seminar with Ann Louise Gittleman a nutritionist on the subject of intestinal parasites James learned that parasites are known for greatly suppressing the body’s immune system and she explained to James that the grayish tinge around his mouth was a dead giveaway for a parasitic infection. She encouraged James to see a world renowned parasitologist Dr. Herman Bueno in New York City.

When tested it was determined that James had 3 types of parasitic infection from Mexico another from working with animals in Texas and a third from drinking water from lakes and streams often in mountainous areas. Dr Bueno went on to say that he had never seen a case of cancer or Aids that didn’t have a parasitic involvement. To rid himself of the health issue he was given an herbal formula..it made him sick so Anne gave him another and he drank mugwort tea two to three times a day along with a lot of raw pumpkin seeds and on the next examination three months later there were no signs of parasitic infection.

Later James met Anne’s teacher Dr. Parcella who at forty had been given a terminal illness diagnosis having tuberculosis, her right kidney over 2/3 gone, her lungs were hemorrhaging and her heart was enlarged. Knowing we are what we eat she began to consume leafy green spinach and plenty of spinach juice She drank fresh water and developed therapeutic bath formulas as 65 percent of bodying cleansing is done through the skin. Her formulas were to pull out environmental chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals and ever harmful radiation. It was also necessary to rule out parasitic involvement and maintain the body’s correct pH level-the acid alkaline balance.

Dr. Parcells told James that cancer is nothing but a man made word dripping with fear. To her it was simply evidence of a body out of balance and it was necessary to detox and get rid of the toxins affecting the body’s immune system.

She also told James that it was necessary to eat meat once again as he was thin and had lost muscle over the years of consuming only a macrobiotic diet.. The diet that had gotten James well was not the diet that would sustain him in the long run. James also learned that cancer grows in an acidic environment.

According to Dr. Parcells, the two most important ways to maintain health and longevity are the following

    1. Keep the body’s pH balance. Much like the pH level of soil must be correct in order to grow plants and vegetables the chemistry of the body must have the correct pH to maintain health. The level needs to be over 7.2 in order to heal. The cells and their energy are universal to health.

You can measure your pH with strips through saliva or urine.
    2. Support the endocrine system. This network of glands that produce and release hormones regulate many important bodily functions. Glands are the energy centers of the body and our bodies are electromagnetically charged. Dr. Parcells stressed the importance of keeping the glands in balance. This involves the body’s chakras seven energy centers that work on bodily functions to the immune system to emotions. Each chakra is paired with a specific endocrine gland and the glands function. There are some other key supplements and therapies everyone can benefit from to prevent cancer in the first place.

Some patients with terminal cancer would take up to 10,000 milligrams of vitamin C every day and experience a miraculous turnaround. In an experiment one group was given a combination of vitamin c L-lysine, L-proline and EGCG and was helpful in controlling cancer.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and more than 80 percent of the skin is composed of collagen. Cancer cells contain an enzyme that can eat right through collagen. The amino acid L-lusine destroys the collagen-eating enzyme

James thinks beside following a macrobiotic diet supplements like Vitamin C and finding ways to eliminate stress and toxins in your environment I would suggest that even though it is hard to stay positive in the middle of a severe challenge retaining hope and positive thoughts is the best way to stem the tide of despair and lose the battle of restoring your health.

James wrote, “The cells in our body react to every thought and emotion that runs through our mind. It’s been proven that negativity suppresses our immune system. Each thought we think acts as either soothing cellular nutrition or a poison dart that releases destructive toxins in our bodies. What we choose to think about plays a central role in creating and maintaining our health. Think about it. If you’re driving in traffic and someone unexpectedly swerves into your lane a cascade of emotions will flood your body with fear and react to the danger. Your body will release certain hormones to prime it for a fight or flight response….. If this fight or flight response happens occasionally there won’t be a problem. It’s when you suffer from chronic repeated stress that the body can experience problems.”

We thank James Templeton for sharing an honest challenging journey to face and conquer a serious illness and to move forward in life appreciating honoring and treasuring all the human compassionate feelings one often remembers and honors as a result of facing and defeating cancer.

In summarizing today’s episode of “Healing From Within” we have in a concise and easy to implement way discovered many ways to help the body mind and spirit fight serious disease or simply provide a really livable style of everyday practices that can improve our auto immune system and provide preventative ways from developing some harmful conditions that will undermine our well being. We have learned that stress fear and worry can destroy your immune system and that meditation visualization positive thinking and allowing yourself to heal any condition by a completely renewed state of mind is not only possible, but probable, if you are consistent and put intentions to allow yourself to be healthy happy and live according to the rules of nature and energy. Healing can start with your thoughts. Remember negative self-talk is self-induced sabotage so avoid it at all costs. Keep your spirits up Get out into nature Be with kind loving people and enlarge positivity within your thinking and actions. Remember to optimize your Vitamin D and C levels and try to limit exposure to polluted air deadly mold cigarette smoke radon EMF radiation pesticides and other hazards.

James and I would have you know you don’t have to wait to have a health challenge to care for and love your healthy self. If we try to apply even some of the wise provisions James has shared in his journey and his book I Used to Have Cancer you will find ways for healing and sustaining health. It will be possible to live with greater energy and efficiently for healing small or large problems.

Welcome to “Healing From Within.” I am your host Sheryl Glick author of The Living Spirit which shares stories of spiritual awakenings communication healing energies miracles small and large, along with ways to discover and use intuition for a healthier more prosperous life journey. Sheryl is delighted to welcome Mina Samuels author of Run Like a Girl 365 Days a Year advocating an authentic life that embraces the mess, the complexity and the contradictions: a life where personal transformation comes from within.

As listeners of “Healing From Within” are well aware Sheryl and her guests share intimate stories and insights into the possibilities for securing a healthy prosperous and adventuresome life as a result of self awareness and realizing higher consciousness as we explore the metaphysical world seeking to discover the multidimensional aspects of human and spiritual life. By knowing more about who we really are, we are able to create through thoughts actions and behaviors the best version of Self and life.

In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” Mina Samuels will share with us the quickest path to authenticity, knowing who we are and then embracing our strengths while forgiving our failures. We will discover that having a friend to remind us that transformation is an ongoing process with no finish line in sight, and an unlimited potential within us that seeks to reach out into the world help us make connections that enrich our lives.

When Sheryl asks Mina to think back to her childhood and remember a person place or event that may have shown them or others the adult they would grow into the or the work or lifestyle they would embrace Mina tells us of being a teenager in camp and going into a canoe by herself into the middle of the lake and while she felt some anxiety as she had never done that before she was able to have a moment of silence and connection to the bigger plan of life and Sheryl reminds her that by conquering that fear and facing the challenge she set herself on the path to do the same throughout her life…to challenge herself learn and share the many beauties of nature as well as our spiritual and physical essence.

Mina goes on to tell us something about the format of her book and suggests to the reader how to get the most out of the format. This book is constructed the way our lives are built—day by day in a series of daily reflections, often unrelated, always accumulating, which slowly knit together to create each of our unique designs. You could read this book daily if you want or on days when you are moved to read it. This is a book to read when you need a boost when you need a reminder of your worth, or when you question why you run or simply why you are alive and get up each morning. If something annoys you move on. Or maybe sit with it for a moment and ask yourself why it annoys you or you might simply want to flip the pages each day and see what message may be relevant for that moment in time. Mina is like a Vetruvian woman a person of many intellectual and spiritual talents. She is a very creative person a writer playwright and performer and has past life interests. She senses in a previous incarnation she was a litigation lawyer and human rights advocate and is very involved with the issues and needs of women in these changing challenging times.

She offers suggestions and practices for how to advance an understanding of one’s spiritual goals and potential. Some of the practices Mina recommend are:

    Engage with the world

    Pay attention

Challenge our bodies and minds to be stronger and happier.

Access our ageless girl-spirit..Chose whatever you need to move your body and get your heart pounding.

Sports Work Communities Families Friends are all stimuli for learning about yourself and the world.

On January 1 the first day of every new year when people expect so much of themselves Mina suggests it is “Time to Distell” and think about what you may be aiming for, but, not something that sets you up for disappointment. Perhaps make a list of possibilities for illumination for growth for steady vitality and to recharge if necessary and to flow in spontaneity pleasure simplicity

Sheryl’s one word is “Love” for life and for each day to come

Mina speaks of many injuries small and large that athletes deal with and on her January 8th entry says ….the symphony is playing.

Mina writes, “As athletes we often feel like our body is a symphony tuning up. That the concert hasn’t started yet, that our body is not quite the body it’s supposed to be. We are waiting for the magic moment when everything is tuned, and in sync: when all the various aches and pains and injuries and ailments as a result of our sports are healed. I think of myself as a healthy person but at any given time there is some boo-boos I’m monitoring sketchy hamstring or a tender hip flexor an incipient blister on the arch of my foot from an orthotic, plus a hangnail or two or a persistent crick I my neck. I’ve been talking about our bodies but I could just as easily be talking about anything else in our lives. We are 100 percent and we all have things we are hoping to change or improve. We wonder when the symphony is going to start, when every instrument will play together as it should. The symphony is already playing. The piece has started and the music our life as it is right now.”

Sheryl tells Mina that one of her granddaughters was recently involved in school in a bullying situation which is all too common in today’s fast moving technological societies where social media and our competitive materialistic society puts so many expectations on our children . So I made her a personal book something like yours, with each page reflecting a new way to value herself and her uniqueness so she could develop self confidence and an awareness of her many spiritual gifts. And on your January 12th entry you mention, “Strive for excellence not perfection which Mina also emphasized with her and others when they find themselves unable to be perfect.”

We know you’re not perfect and nobody else is either so we can’t waste time comparing ourselves to others. As Carl Jung who is one of Sheryl’s favorite spiritualist psychologists believed to help people discover who they were not to live in the past and relive what you believe to me less than perfect or conceived of as mistakes allows us to focus on creating what we need in present time. He believed in finding our talents and what made us happy without bringing and reliving the pain of past memories and events. Carl Jung understood the soul nature of our lives and had a near death experience so he was well aware of the fact that we are spiritual beings having a physical life and that consciousness survives physical death. Carl Jung famously said, “Perfection belongs to the gods: the most we can hope for is excellence.” Excellence is within reach. Excellence is personal. Excellence is an intention, a commitment to manifest your potential. Excellence is putting in our best effort and holding our own selves to our highest standards. Not every action we take is excellent (that’s why we practice), and give it our all.

On the January 13th entry Mina talks about the voice in our head. Mina writes, “There’s a little, but persistent, voice in our heads. . She’s not us, but she is. She can be pretty judgmental, first and foremost of us, but of others, too. That voice might tell us that our best intentions are stupid, that our potential is limited and possibilities–? More like impossibilities. Our voice might throw out an offhand remark about being fat or ugly or aging. She might try to convince us were not up to the task: that we are weak: really, that we’re just plain not good enough. Never mind all the oughts and shoulds she slings around. She’s a spin-doctor of the worst kind mounting smear campaigns and posting attack ads at every opportunity.

Sheryl says that we can quiet that voice, transform it with uplifting positive feedback meditate and connect to our Higher Selves and rewrite the story of our words thoughts and actions to manifest and create a new version of ourselves and our lives. “The Law of Attraction” reminds us that what we focus our thoughts time and efforts on over time materializes. Consistency and attention to what we wish to create brings forth what we need into our lives..Be love and draw love to you… Be hateful and expect to dwell in continuous troublesome events. The Universe gives us what we ask for so we need to be mindful and conscious our thoughts and goals.

Mina tells us that “Some mornings I wake up and wonder if my life has meaning, like after I’ve talked to someone as passionately engaged as Leslie Sobel who wrote the Kaskawulsh Terminus Reliquary. But we can all make the world a better place, be good people and contribute. Our athletic attempts are preparation and practice for that greater work.

Sheryl says that she often thinks have that any hardship or challenge are simply opportunities to remember who we are and where we come from so we truly know the magnificent potential that lies within our memories of eternal life. In Sheryl’s book The Living Spirit she wrote, “ I believe our loved ones in spirit guide us to expand our understanding of our soul nature. They knew us in their physical lives, but after crossing over they may become our teachers, helping us to gain knowledge of life death and how to better navigate this three-dimensional physical plane earth. There is a universal sphere of continuous knowledge beyond Earth; it is the point where the past, present, and future merge. In reality there really is no past, present, or future. There is only energy. Even the challenges, no matter how hard, must be experiences in order to understand the strength and power of our divine energetic being.”

So now we begin to know the meaning of this physical life experience which is to remember who we are as spiritual beings exploring the world simply for the chance to appreciate love and grow our most compassionate soul energy through the beautiful connection to nature man and God.

Mina has wonderful photos accompanying her daily entries On the December 16 entry titled “pictures for my father” Mina shared a very intimate entry and Mina wrote, “Flying into Boise, Idaho for the first time, the rolling desert—brown, arid, sensual—surprised me. I often imagine walking into that kind of terrain and never returning. Snap

The sky is twilight orange, streaked with clouds curving into the horizon, smudged by a thin veil of forest fire smoke , Snap

I was snapping mental pictures for my father. Five months after my father died, he was more present to me than he had been since my childhood.

I started sending the photos to him when I was on a trip to Colorado, shortly before my father was diagnosed with melanoma. He liked getting the snapshots. I kept on, sending him glimpses of what I saw…..Once my father told me that I had a good eye. I stowed that compliment away in my pocket, like a lucky pebble, shinning his words between my thumb and forefinger when I was thinking of him. It was the most regular contact I’d had with him for years.

Snap. I took a picture of a sunflower while running on the Camelback trails in Boise. It was for my father.

Sheryl tells Mina that story and picture were very moving to her. Sheryl often remembers how much she misses her father, even though as a medium, she senses many of the thoughts that inspire her as she walks along the ocean edge to improve life for herself and others come from him. Our loved ones are in constant communication with us, but we need to develop a way to be still and feel the thoughts they share within our heart.

Sheryl tells Mina that when she looks at a book with individual dated entries she always loves to go to her birth date which is September 16th and so she did to read the entry…”Teardrop.”

Mina wrote, “With my shirt off, the light chill on my stomach felt like a childhood memory of my mother blowing on my soft baby tummy. Had my mother actually done that? Or was I tapping into the collective memory of all the babies whose mothers and fathers had blown on their tummies?

On that September morning run, the air and my skin merged and humidity mingling, as if I were suspended inside a teardrop, the breath of the universe ticking my skin comforting me.

Sheryl says that in reading that she wasn’t sure if parents blowing on their children’s tummy was a comforting or intrusive event..For Sheryl who is empathic and sensitive it would not have been welcomed So if a child shows you or any person for that matter that they are uncomfortable even though you are not you must respect the needs of each person and child and be mindful of how you speak touch and affect them.

Mina Samuels author of Run Like A Girl 365 Days A Year a journal of thoughts and insights into the beauty of life through personal self-investigation and finding joy and connectedness in the physical and spiritual aspects of nature family friends and daily experiences which incorporates a love for sports self and experiencing a merging of mind body and spirit for health and joy.

In summarizing today’s episode of “Healing from Within” we have followed a journey of the heart spirit and physical body, enjoying new sports activities and travel journeys finding in the poetic messages of each day, written within the pages of a diary or journal and the photographs as a way to see life and self in a connected interplay of energy that grounds us to our physical life as well as to higher consciousness and awareness. There is love and self-doubt, joy and some fear, sorrow and exhilaration, but always movement towards a personal journey of discovery of the really valuable ingredients for living life with passion zest and understanding who we are in the process.

On October 28 Mina wrote…. reforestation of the mind

“We have dendritic arbors in our brains. Dendrites are the branched projections of a neuron that act to conduct the electrochemical stimulation received from other neural cells to the cell body. As dendrites branch and grow, that branching is called arborization. It’s like we have these little forests growing in our brains the garden of our mind, without which we can’t think, can’t act, can’t be. The bushier our dendritic arbors, the more able we are to deal with the complexities of the world and, scientists speculate, the happier we are likely to be.

When we lack stimulation our dendritic arbors begin to wither. As this winter in our brains deepens, our engagement with the world begins to dissolve.

Sports, it turns out, are not just stimulating for our bodies but our minds too. When we go out running, or cycling, or dancing or cross country skiing or really whatever moves our bodies vigorously, we can think of it as our personal reforestation program. Oh and hugs are important too (science says so!)

Mina and I would have you explore the poetic thoughts that reside within you, in the music that sings to your heart and in our everyday appreciation of what’s good in our lives…our work family friends sports and how we are growing personally through everyday experiences while learning to allow accept and surrender to the flow of life without controlling it. Be aware and be part of the newness of each day and new interaction with others. Life is made better by simply participating and moving in sync with the rhythm of life.
