This week-long retreat is an immersion into the medicinal plants of the Southern Appalachians, a region sometimes referred to as the "Apothecary of North America." Together, we'll explore the incredible diversity of native, introduced, and cultivated herbs that thrive here.
Patricia Kyritsi Howell and Cara-Lee Langston lead retreat activities, including field studies, lectures, wildcrafting, foraging, medicine making, and more. Other guest teachers to be announced.
Arrive Sunday in time for an evening orientation and wild foods reception at the Parker Ranch. Monday morning, we'll head out to a local trail to begin botanizing. Each day starts with a field trip where you'll learn to use a botanical key to identify spring herbs, practice sustainable harvesting, and gather herbs to make medicines.
In the afternoon, we return to Parker Ranch to talk about the medicinal uses of the herbs we've seen and process plants harvested. Our schedule includes free time each day allows you to explore Rabun County.

Welcome to chapter one of the Botanical Green Book, an ongoing series hosted by botanist Derek Haynes. In this episode, he interviews Delphine Sellars, the executive director of Urban Community AgriNomics, also known as UCAN.
We'll learn about how Delphine came to work with plants, what UCAN is all about, and we'll even get to take a tour of the grounds with them.
Prior to receiving its nonprofit status in 2016, UCAN worked in the community with and for other nonprofits to reduce food insecurity, prevent and reverse health issues, augment the academic success of children and create healthy families.

Derek Haynes AKA The Chocolate Botanist introduces us to his new project, "The Botanical Green Book". In the year 1936, Victor Hugo Green wrote the first volume of "The Negro Traveler's Green Book" which helped African-American travelers in the US find safe, and legal, places to stay, eat and safely travel.
This new monthly video series with Derek is inspired by the Green Book, and he's going to take us around the plant community introducing us to black botanists, horticulturists, herbalists and plant people. Stay tuned for chapter one, coming soon! CLICK HERE to watch the original YouTube video.
