We’ve all heard the phrase, “Trust your gut,” right? There might be more truth in that statement than you might think. Our gut is about digestion --all about the power of our digestive organs to process and absorb what we eat while also being able to burn off waste products-- but there’s so much more to it. If our digestive fire isn’t burning up to snuff, unprocessed foods can cause inflammation, evidenced by things like hunger or bloating, indigestion, intestinal cramps, constipation, and gassiness. However, when our digestive fire is in balance, we see things like nutrient absorption, better metabolism, obviously better digestion, but also a sense of perception, cellular metabolism, and mental assimilation.Mental wellbeing and your digestive health are directly connected.
And wouldn’t you know it, but there’s a variety of herbs that can help fire up that internal furnace and get that digestive motor revved up. Our featured plant guests on this episode are garlic (Allium sativum), horseradish (Armoracia rusticana), ginger (Zingiber officinale), cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), & cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanni). These are all delightfully delicious pantry items so good in so many dishes. We talk about some of the ways to get this medicine to your gut with food. Yes! Food as medicine. Brilliant! With a few mindful choices, we can be good to our guts so they can be good to us.
