  • Former Funeral Home Owner Wanted After Woman's Body AND 30 Cremated Remains Found at His Former Denver Residence
An arrest warrant has been issued by the Denver Police Department for Miles Harford, the former owner of Apollo Funeral and Cremation Services, following the discovery of human remains at his previous residence in Denver. Authorities allege that Harford, 33, is wanted for investigation on charges of abuse of a corpse, forgery, and theft.

The investigation was initiated after a call to the police on February 6, reporting suspicious findings at a property on South Quitman Street, where Harford was recently evicted. Upon arrival, law enforcement officials, alongside personnel from the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner, uncovered disturbing evidence.

During a press briefing, Cmdr. Matt Clark revealed that the discovery included the remains of a woman and more than 30 individuals who had been cremated, all found within the premises from which Harford was removed. The remains were found stored in various containers, including boxes hidden in a crawlspace of the house.

Further inspection led to the discovery of a hearse parked at the property, containing the body of a deceased 63-year-old woman, identified as Christina Rosales, who passed away from natural causes in August 2022. Shockingly, it was revealed that the remains previously provided to Rosales' family were not hers, indicating a disturbing deception orchestrated by Harford.

George Rosales, Christina's husband, expressed his dismay at the revelation, stating, "We were misguided. We were... just knowing she was in the back of the car, hearse, outside, just covered with a blanket. That’s not how someone is supposed to be put to rest."

Further investigation led to the discovery of six additional urns containing cremated remains inside a U-Haul parked outside the property. Authorities estimate that the recovered remains span from individuals who died between 2012 and 2021.

As investigators work to identify the remains and return them to their rightful families, the Denver Police Department urges clients of Apollo Funeral and Cremation Services, particularly those who may have concerns or haven't received their loved one's remains, to contact the Denver Police Major Crimes Division and Denver Police Victim Assistance Unit at 720-913-6610.

In light of the circumstances, DNA testing on the unlabelled remains found at the residence will not be conducted due to the loss of DNA integrity resulting from the cremation process.

The search for Harford continues as authorities aim to bring closure to the affected families and seek justice in this disturbing case.

  • Father of Michigan School Shooter Requests Jurors from Different County for Fair Trial
In a bid for a fair trial, James Crumbley, the father of the Michigan school shooter, is seeking jurors from a different county to decide his involuntary manslaughter case. Amid concerns of excessive publicity and the recent conviction of his wife, defense attorney Mariell Lehman argued that the Crumbleys have already been "clearly convicted in the court of public opinion."

James Crumbley, 47, stands accused of charges related to making a gun accessible to his son, Ethan Crumbley, and failing to secure mental health care for him. The tragic events unfolded when 15-year-old Ethan carried out a mass shooting at Oxford High School in 2021, resulting in the deaths of four students and injuries to others.

The upcoming trial in Oakland County has raised significant challenges in securing an impartial jury due to the extensive media coverage and the recent conviction of James's wife, Jennifer Crumbley. Despite these hurdles, jury selection is scheduled for March 5, with the defense team advocating for jurors from a different county.

The unusual move to seek jurors from elsewhere in Michigan reflects concerns about the potential influence of preconceived notions and biases stemming from the intense scrutiny surrounding the case. Oakland County, with its population of 1.27 million people, poses a unique challenge in ensuring an unbiased jury selection process.

The issue of jury selection is expected to be addressed during an upcoming hearing before Judge Cheryl Matthews, where defense objections to certain witnesses and evidence will also be considered. Prosecutors, bound by a gag order, have previously opposed efforts to relocate the trial or bring in jurors from outside the county.

The legal proceedings follow Jennifer Crumbley's conviction for involuntary manslaughter on February 6, with sentencing pending. Meanwhile, Ethan Crumbley, now 17, has pleaded guilty to murder and terrorism charges, receiving a life prison sentence with no chance for parole.

Despite the complexities surrounding the case, both the defense and prosecution remain committed to ensuring a fair trial that upholds the principles of justice and accountability. With jury selection looming, the court faces the formidable task of assembling an impartial jury capable of rendering a verdict based solely on the evidence presented during the trial.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragic school shooting, the legal proceedings serve as a critical step towards addressing accountability and seeking justice for the victims and their families.

  • Colorado Funeral Home Under Scrutiny After Concerns Raised by Coroner Go Unanswered
Return to Nature Funeral Home finds itself at the center of controversy after the revelation that concerns raised by the Fremont County Coroner about the facility's conditions in 2020 went unanswered. The development sheds light on alleged improper practices at the funeral home, leading to legal ramifications for its co-owners.

Arrest documents unveiled shocking details, indicating that co-owners Jon and Carie Hallford are accused of improperly storing 190 bodies inside the funeral home. Investigators uncovered distressing scenes, with some bodies left to decay for years and others found without proper covering.

The ordeal began when subcontractors, on behalf of the Fremont County Coroner's Office, entered the funeral home premises in Penrose and reported alarming conditions to Coroner Randy Keller in May 2020. Disturbed by what they witnessed, employees raised concerns about bodies being stored on the floor instead of on proper tables or cots, along with issues regarding refrigeration.

Coroner Keller, in response to the distressing findings, took proactive measures by alerting the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) via email about the concerns. However, the coroner's office expressed frustration as they received no response from DORA, leaving them uncertain about the appropriate course of action.

A spokesperson for DORA confirmed the receipt of Coroner Keller's email, clarifying that the agency lacked the authority to inspect funeral homes until 2022, following the passage of legislation granting inspection powers. However, the lack of communication left unanswered questions about how to address the reported violations.

When contacted for further details, Coroner Keller cited a gag order preventing him from commenting on the case, underscoring the complexities surrounding the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced plans for the demolition of the funeral home by the last week of February, signaling an end to the facility's troubled history.

As the legal proceedings unfold, co-owners Jon and Carie Hallford are scheduled to appear in court for separate arraignment hearings on March 21. Fourth Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen anticipates pleas of not guilty from the accused, who face a staggering 260 felony counts.

The unfolding saga underscores the importance of regulatory oversight and swift responses to concerns raised about the treatment of deceased individuals, ensuring dignity and respect even in death.

  • Oklahoma Judge Resigns After Texting During Murder Trial, Prior Texting Allegations Surface
Oklahoma Judge Traci Soderstrom's resignation, prompted by her texting during a murder trial, comes amidst prior allegations of misconduct. The revelations, which emerged during the trial of a man accused of manslaughter in the death of a 2-year-old child, have cast a shadow over Soderstrom's judicial tenure.

Soderstrom's inappropriate phone usage during the murder trial garnered widespread attention when a video surfaced in July, revealing her engaged in texting and Facebook use during critical trial phases. Despite the severity of the case, Soderstrom admitted to her lapse in judgment, acknowledging the impropriety of her actions.

In a statement following her resignation announcement, Soderstrom expressed remorse for her conduct, emphasizing the gravity of her actions irrespective of the trial's nature. However, this is not the first time Soderstrom has faced scrutiny for her texting habits during a trial.

Last year, Soderstrom faced criticism for allegedly sending over 500 texts to her bailiff during the same murder trial. Court documents revealed that the texts included mocking remarks directed at prosecutors while praising the defense attorney. These allegations underscore concerns about Soderstrom's impartiality and adherence to judicial ethics.

Chief Justice M. John Kane IV, in his petition recommending Soderstrom's removal, cited a pattern of gross neglect of duty and partiality, as evidenced by her extensive texting during trial proceedings. Soderstrom's interactions with the court bailiff, as outlined in court documents, further underscored her lack of temperament to serve as a judge.
An order of dismissal in the case filed on Friday notes that Soderstrom has voluntarily resigned and agrees to not seek any judicial position in the state again.

Soderstrom was elected as a judge in November 2022 and took the bench in January 2023. She had served for six months before the murder trial.

The defendant in the trial was eventually found guilty by a jury of second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to time served.

The resignation of Judge Soderstrom marks a significant development in addressing judicial misconduct within the Oklahoma judiciary. While her departure signifies accountability for her actions, it also prompts reflection on the broader implications of electronic device usage in the courtroom.

As legal experts and policymakers contemplate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, the spotlight remains on upholding the integrity and impartiality of the judicial system. The Oklahoma Supreme Court's response to Soderstrom's resignation will likely shape the trajectory of efforts to maintain ethical standards among judges statewide.

In the aftermath of this controversy, stakeholders emphasize the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to established judicial norms to restore public trust in the judiciary.

  • Mass Shooting at Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Celebration Leaves 22 Injured and 1 Dead
Authorities in Kansas City revealed shocking details of a mass shooting that unfolded amidst the celebratory atmosphere of the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade. Police Chief Stacey Graves disclosed that the incident, which occurred outside Union Station, appeared to have stemmed from a dispute among several individuals.

According to Graves, the toll of the shooting stands at 22 injured individuals, ranging from 8 to 47 years old, with half of them under the age of 16. Tragically, a mother of two lost her life in the chaos.

Despite the presence of over 800 police officers in and around the area, including atop nearby structures, the shooting still occurred. Mayor Quinton Lucas, who was present at the celebration with his family, expressed dismay over the incident, highlighting the ongoing threat of mass shootings across the nation.

Eyewitnesses recounted moments of confusion and terror as gunshots shattered the festive atmosphere. Gene Hamilton, a witness from Wichita, Kansas, expressed his disbelief that the upbeat rally music continued amidst the chaos, while others scrambled for safety.

A witness from Overland Park, Kansas, described the initial disbelief and subsequent confusion among the crowd as the shots rang out, leaving many unsure of what had transpired.

The incident marks another dark chapter in sports celebrations tainted by gun violence across the United States. Social media footage captured the panic and horror that ensued as police rushed to secure the area and attendees fled for cover.

One hero emerged amidst the chaos, as Trey Filter of Wichita, Kansas, recounted how he and another individual restrained a suspect until police arrived. Filter's actions potentially prevented further harm, demonstrating the bravery and resilience of the community in the face of adversity.

The victim of the shooting was identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, known as ''Lisa G,'' a beloved figure in the local Latino community. Friends remembered her as an extroverted and selfless individual who would always put others before herself.

Kansas City has long grappled with gun violence, and despite efforts to enhance security measures, such as the deployment of additional law enforcement personnel, incidents like these continue to occur. Mayor Lucas reiterated the need for stricter gun control measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

The aftermath of the shooting left numerous individuals hospitalized, with some still in critical condition. Hospitals have been inundated with victims, including children, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence on communities.

As Kansas City grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act, questions linger about the safety of future celebrations and the broader issue of gun violence plaguing society.

  • Alaska Woman Sentenced to 99 Years for Murder of "Best Friend" in Catfishing Scheme
In a tragic case that shocked the nation, Denali Brehmer, a 24-year-old woman from Alaska, has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for her role in the murder of her 19-year-old friend Cynthia Hoffman back in 2019. The sentencing marks the culmination of a disturbing catfishing scheme that led to the untimely death of Hoffman, who was described by her father as having developmental disabilities and who considered Brehmer to be her closest companion.

The chilling events unfolded when Hoffman went missing during a hike at Thunderbird Falls, Alaska, accompanied by Brehmer and another friend. Two days later, her lifeless body was discovered along the banks of a river, bound with duct tape and fatally shot in the back of the head.

The investigation into Hoffman's murder revealed a harrowing web of deceit orchestrated by a man named Darin Schilmiller, based in Indiana, who had allegedly catfished Hoffman under the guise of a wealthy benefactor named "Tyler." Schilmiller offered Brehmer a staggering $9 million to carry out the murder and provide him with photos and videos of the crime.

Brehmer, along with another friend, Kayden McIntosh, who was 18 at the time, allegedly drove Hoffman to the remote location where McIntosh shot her after she was duct-taped and posed for disturbing photographs. While Brehmer did not physically pull the trigger, prosecutors argued that her active participation in the planning and execution of the crime made her equally culpable for Hoffman's death.

Patrick McKay, the prosecutor handling the case, emphasized Brehmer's integral role in the murder, stating, "She may not have pulled the trigger, but this never would have happened if it weren’t for Denali Brehmer."

McIntosh, who faces murder charges, is still awaiting trial, while another individual connected to the case, Caleb Leyland, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and awaits sentencing. Additionally, two other teens involved in the incident were prosecuted in juvenile court for their alleged roles.

Brehmer's sentencing to 99 years in prison was met with somber reflection from Timothy Hoffman, Cynthia's father, who lamented the loss of his daughter and the betrayal by someone she considered a friend. "My daughter just wanted friends, and now I have to bury her," Hoffman expressed during a court appearance in 2019.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online manipulation and the devastating consequences that can arise from sinister schemes, leaving a community grappling with grief and seeking justice for a life tragically cut short.

  • Delphi Murder Case Attorneys Seek Clarification on Contempt Allegations
The legal proceedings surrounding the Delphi murder case have taken a new turn as attorneys for suspect Richard Allen seek clarity on contempt of court allegations brought against them by Carroll County Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland.

McLeland filed a motion last month, accusing attorneys Brad Rozzi and Andrew Baldwin of contempt of court, citing actions outside the courtroom that he deemed "indirect contempt of court." The allegations stem from Rozzi and Baldwin's conduct related to the high-profile case involving the abduction and murder of teenagers Libby German and Abby Williams in 2017.

Scheduled for a hearing on March 18 in front of Special Judge Frances Gull, the allegations have prompted Rozzi's and Baldwin's legal counsel, represented by attorney David Hennessy, to petition for further clarification on the nature of the contempt charges.

Hennessy's petition highlights the lack of specificity in McLeland's motion, particularly regarding what actions were deemed contemptuous. For instance, McLeland referenced a news release issued by Rozzi and Baldwin in November 2022, prior to the imposition of a gag order, without specifying its contemptuous nature.

"It seems clear that the State is really attempting to charge indirect criminal contempt," Hennessy stated in the petition, suggesting the possibility of separate criminal contempt proceedings. According to state guidelines, criminal contempt may carry penalties of imprisonment and fines, necessitating a distinct legal process initiated by the state.

As of now, McLeland has not initiated separate criminal contempt proceedings, leaving the status of the allegations uncertain. Hennessy's petition also seeks guidance on the nature of the upcoming hearing, questioning whether it will solely involve an advisement of specific allegations or include testimony and evidence presentation.

Special Judge Frances Gull, overseeing Allen's murder case, has yet to respond to the petition, leaving both the defense and prosecution awaiting further clarification on the contempt allegations.

With the trial of Richard Allen slated for October, the resolution of the contempt issue adds another layer of complexity to an already intricate legal saga, underscoring the importance of procedural clarity and fair adjudication in high-profile cases. As the legal process unfolds, stakeholders await the judge's decision on how to proceed with the contempt allegations, which could have significant implications for the defense and prosecution in the Delphi murder case.

  • Missouri Mother Charged After Allegedly Placing 1-Month-Old Baby in Hot Oven
Authorities in Missouri have leveled felony child endangerment charges against Mariah Thomas, a 26-year-old mother, following a tragic incident where her 1-month-old daughter was found dead after allegedly being placed in a hot oven.

According to court documents obtained by HuffPost, the harrowing event unfolded on Friday when Kansas City Police responded to a distressing 911 call reporting burn injuries on the infant. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters.

Thomas purportedly claimed that she accidentally placed her baby daughter in the oven instead of her crib while attempting to put her down for a nap. The revelation came from Thomas' father, who recounted her distraught admission to investigators. He recalled Thomas stating that she had thought she was placing the baby in her crib but had mistakenly placed her in the oven.

The series of events leading up to the tragedy unfolded as follows:

    - Thomas and the baby were described as being in good spirits by her father and were observed awake that morning.
    - Thomas left the house with the baby around 8 a.m., but later, around 1 p.m., she called her mother in a state of hysteria, admitting to the grave mistake.
    - Upon returning home, Thomas' husband discovered the unimaginable scene, with investigators noting apparent thermal injuries on the baby's body and significant burn marks on a blanket found nearby.

Despite her arrest, Thomas declined to speak with detectives. Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker expressed the somber gravity of the situation, stating, "We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life."

While the Jackson County Medical Examiner has yet to determine the exact cause of the baby's death, Baker alleged that Thomas knowingly put her child in harm's way, leading to the fatal outcome.

Currently held in the Jackson County Detention Center, Thomas awaits legal proceedings. Neither the prosecutor's office nor the circuit court has responded to inquiries about additional information or legal representation for Thomas. If convicted, Thomas faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence ranging from 10 to 30 years or even life, as outlined in court documents.

  • Texas Church Shooting: Shooter's Mental Health History Raises Questions
The recent shooting at Houston’s Lakewood Church has left the community grappling with shock and sorrow as authorities delve into the complex background of the shooter, Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, whose documented mental health struggles raise troubling questions about gun ownership and public safety.

According to reports, Moreno, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, opened fire at the renowned megachurch, injuring two individuals, including her own 7-year-old son, before law enforcement officers intervened, resulting in her death.

Moreno's mother-in-law, Walli Carranza, emphasized that her daughter-in-law's mental illness was well-documented, citing a history of schizophrenia and an emotional detention order dating back to 2016. Carranza expressed profound regret that Moreno's condition was not adequately addressed, lamenting that such a tragedy could have been prevented had there been stronger mental health provisions and red flag laws in place to restrict firearm access for individuals in crisis.

Authorities are working tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the shooting and uncover Moreno's motives. However, the investigation is compounded by the shooter's extensive criminal record, previous antisemitic writings, and a bitter divorce battle, all of which contribute to the complexity of understanding her actions.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner described the shooting as a "completely preventable horror," underscoring the urgent need for improved mental health support and firearm regulations to avert similar tragedies in the future. The lack of robust red flag laws in Texas, which could have enabled authorities to intervene and disarm Moreno, has sparked renewed calls for legislative action to safeguard public safety.

As authorities continue their investigation, they are scrutinizing Moreno's social media presence, criminal history, and personal relationships to decipher any discernible motive behind the attack. The shooter's troubled past, marked by frequent encounters with law enforcement and episodes of erratic behavior, further underscores the need for comprehensive mental health reform and enhanced access to support services for vulnerable individuals.

In the wake of this devastating incident, communities are grappling with the sobering reality of gun violence permeating places once considered safe havens. The Lakewood Church shooting serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for proactive measures to address mental health challenges and prevent tragedies of this nature from recurring.

While the investigation into Moreno's motives is ongoing, the profound loss and anguish inflicted by this senseless act of violence serve as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to prioritize mental health advocacy and enact meaningful reforms to protect lives and ensure public safety.

  • Pennsylvania Couple Arrested for Allegedly Subjecting 6-Year-Old Daughter to Horrific Abuse
Pennsylvania authorities have arrested a couple in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, following disturbing allegations of child abuse that have shocked the community.

Jacob William Weight, 37, and Mimi Ann Frost, 33, were taken into custody on Feb. 6 after Pennsylvania State Police responded to their residence on Jan. 7 regarding reports of an "unresponsive" child. The subsequent investigation uncovered horrifying details of abuse and neglect allegedly inflicted upon their 6-year-old daughter.

Upon entering the home, responding officers were met with scenes of squalor, with dog feces, trash, and urine strewn about the residence. It was within this environment that the couple's 6-year-old daughter was allegedly subjected to unspeakable mistreatment.

Authorities reported that the child had been confined to a dog cage, zip-tied, and physically assaulted with a broom on multiple occasions, as per accounts provided by other children in the household. Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele described the child's ordeal as "torture," revealing that she showed signs of malnourishment and had suffered abrasions and open sores on her body.

According to a criminal complaint reviewed by The Herald Standard, the child had not received pediatric care in three years, despite displaying a range of medical and dental issues. The complaint further detailed chilling revelations from the child herself, who reportedly disclosed to a therapist that she was forced to sleep in the dog cage every night and consume dog food. Additionally, Weight allegedly subjected her to further abuse by shooting her legs with a BB gun.

"One of the worst parts about it is there were five other children in the house and 10 dogs and none of them were malnourished," remarked Aubele, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Weight and Frost now face a litany of charges, including assault on a minor, corruption of minors, involuntary servitude, strangulation, false imprisonment, and child endangerment. Despite the gravity of the accusations, Weight vehemently maintained his innocence as he was escorted in handcuffs, while Frost opted not to make any comments.

Currently held without bail at Fayette County Prison, Weight and Frost await further legal proceedings as the community grapples with the harrowing details of the alleged abuse inflicted upon their young daughter.
