  • A 44-Year-Old Off-Duty Pilot Arrested on 160+ Charges for Attempting to Disrupt Plane's Engines Midflight
A 44-year-old off-duty pilot was apprehended on more than 160 charges following his alleged attempt to disrupt the plane's engines midflight, raising genuine security concerns.

The incident unfolded on Sunday, October 22, aboard a Horizon Airlines flight operated by Alaska Airlines, en route from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco. Authorities received reports of a credible security threat involving an off-duty pilot occupying a flight deck jump seat.

Identified as Joseph Emerson by KOIN-TV, the off-duty pilot purportedly made an unsuccessful attempt to interfere with the engine's operation. The aircraft's captain and first officer successfully thwarted Emerson's efforts, and Alaska Airlines confirmed that the plane never lost engine power, with the crew securing the aircraft without any further incident.

To address the situation, air traffic control redirected the flight, leading to an emergency landing at Portland International Airport, where Emerson was apprehended. Multnomah County Jail records indicate that Emerson faces a total of 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment, and one count of endangering an aircraft.

Alaska Airlines reassured passengers that they were accommodated on a subsequent flight without any disruptions.

  • Notorious South Carolina Inmate Susan Smith Discusses Motherhood and Parole Prospects with Suitors
In a recorded jailhouse phone call, Susan Smith, the inmate serving a life sentence for drowning her two sons, discussed her thoughts on motherhood and parole prospects with one of her suitors. As her first parole hearing approaches, Smith faces both opposition from her former husband and offers of support from admirers.

As the date for her first parole hearing, scheduled for November 4, 2024, draws near, Susan Smith, the infamous South Carolina inmate convicted of murdering her two young sons, Michael Daniel Smith, 3, and Alexander Tyler Smith, 14 months, has recently made headlines again. Transcripts of a recorded jailhouse phone call from Leath Correctional Institution last month have revealed Smith's contemplation of motherhood and potential parole prospects.

In the recorded conversation, Smith, now 52 years old, told one of several suitors, "I could see myself around kids," sparking a conversation about her future role as a stepmother. The suitor responded positively, saying, "You'd be great, babe." The Messenger obtained these transcripts, shedding light on Smith's thoughts as her parole hearing approaches.

Smith's notoriety stems from her 1994 conviction for the murder of her two sons. Initially, she claimed that a carjacker, described as a Black man, had taken her vehicle with her children inside. A nationwide search ensued, and Smith tearfully pleaded for their safe return on national television. However, it was later revealed that Smith had intentionally allowed her car to roll into John D. Long Lake, with her sons strapped into their car seats.

One of Smith's former suitors, Tom Findalay, had penned a letter that prosecutors argued played a role in driving her to commit the heinous act. In the letter, Findalay expressed concerns about Smith's children, leading to speculation about her motives. Smith, on the other hand, has long maintained that she did not drown her children for a man's sake but rather suffered a psychotic breakdown.

Relatives of Smith have revealed that men have always been drawn to her, even during her time behind bars. One relative commented, "She's always been into guys, obviously. It would be the best case scenario for her, to be in a relationship. So she's hoping to find the right man to live with if she gets out." This revelation comes as Smith's first parole hearing approaches, where she plans to request her release.

However, her former husband, David Smith, who had stood by her side during the fruitless search for their children and at their funerals, remains vehemently opposed to her release. A relative of David Smith stated, "David still thinks of his boys every day and doesn't ever want Susan to get out. She belongs in jail… she is exactly where she needs to be – in prison. And we will do what it takes to keep her there."

Amidst the polarizing views on her release, Smith's suitors have been actively offering support. Some have offered her money, a place to stay upon parole, and even the prospect of building a future together. One suitor expressed, "She's a good person who did something terrible when she was young and not in her right mind – people can change." These suitors are vying to assist her post-release.

Smith's life behind bars has not been devoid of controversy. Reports have emerged of an illicit sexual relationship with a prison guard, as well as incidents of marijuana use and self-mutilation in her disciplinary record. When not engaging with prospective post-release lovers, Smith often discusses her potential parole with friends and family, seeking advice on how to present her case to the Parole Board.

In a recorded phone call, a friend named Ruth advised Smith to frame her case around the possibility of postpartum depression, which can last up to three years after childbirth. "Prepare now what you will say when you're given the chance to speak at your parole," Ruth advised. "It won't be easy."

As Susan Smith's first parole hearing date looms, the public remains divided on whether she should be granted parole or continue to serve her life sentence for the tragic and shocking crime that has haunted the nation for nearly three decades.

  • Recorded Jail Calls Reveal Donna Adelson's Emotional Conversations After Son's Murder Conviction
In a surprising turn of events, recorded jail calls between Donna Adelson and her son, Charlie Adelson, have shed light on the emotional turmoil within the Adelson family following Charlie's conviction in the high-profile Dan Markel murder case.

Charlie Adelson, a wealthy periodontist from Fort Lauderdale, was found guilty on November 6 of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the 2014 killing of his former brother-in-law, Dan Markel. His mother, Donna Adelson, faced arrest on similar charges just days later, sparking intense scrutiny of their family dynamics.

The jail calls, totaling more than 35 hours, captured candid conversations between Charlie and his parents as they grappled with the consequences of his conviction and the impending legal proceedings.

One particular call, initiated by Charlie Adelson from the Leon County Detention Facility, lasted 25 minutes and was marked by emotional exchanges between Charlie and Donna Adelson. During this call, Donna Adelson discussed several significant topics:

    1. **The Markel Case:** Donna Adelson openly spoke about the Markel murder case, reflecting the family's distress. Her statements indicated the gravity of the situation, given Charlie's recent conviction and the ongoing investigation.

    2. **Text Message from Daughter:** She read aloud a text message exchange with her daughter, Wendi Adelson, which occurred hours after the guilty verdicts were announced. Wendi's message expressed her position that she was not responsible for Charlie's situation and focused on caring for her sons during this difficult time.

    3. **Suicidal Thoughts:** Donna Adelson made conflicting remarks about her own emotional state, mentioning thoughts of not wanting to see her son and suggesting a joint suicide. She expressed a desire to escape from the situation, raising concerns about her well-being.

    4. **Extradition to Vietnam:** She mentioned looking up Vietnam multiple times to determine whether it had an extradition treaty with the U.S., possibly hinting at future plans.

The call took place on November 7, the day following Charlie Adelson's conviction and shortly before Donna's arrest. It was marked by moments of tension and vulnerability, showcasing the immense stress experienced by the Adelson family.

Prosecutors revealed that these jail calls, totaling over 35 hours of conversations between Charlie, Donna, and others, played a pivotal role in accelerating Donna Adelson's arrest. The calls forced them to expedite their timetable.

Donna Adelson, who had been in solitary confinement and on suicide watch, recently made her first in-person appearance in a Leon County courtroom. During her arraignment, she pleaded not guilty to charges related to the murder of Dan Markel. Her attorney alleged mistreatment by the jail authorities but was unsuccessful in obtaining intervention by the court.

The Markel case, dating back to 2014, has garnered widespread attention for its intricate details and complex family dynamics. Dan Markel was fatally shot in his garage during a legal battle with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, who had ties to the Adelson family. Prosecutors have long maintained that Markel's murder was orchestrated to facilitate Wendi Adelson's relocation to Miami.

The recorded jail calls provide a unique insight into the emotions and conversations that unfolded within the Adelson family during this tumultuous period. As the legal proceedings continue, the Markel case remains a focal point of interest and scrutiny.

  • Utah Mother Behind "8 Passengers" YouTube Channel Pleads Guilty to Child Abuse Charges
Ruby Franke, a Utah mother of six who gained fame through her YouTube channel "8 Passengers," pleaded guilty on Monday to four felony counts of second-degree aggravated child abuse, admitting to the abuse and starvation of two of her children. The plea was entered in a courtroom where Franke appeared wearing gray and white jail clothing, expressing her deepest regret for her actions.

The charges stemmed from a disturbing incident that unfolded earlier this year when Franke's 12-year-old son escaped from a residence in the southern Utah city of Ivins, where he had been held captive. Covered in wounds and with duct tape on his wrists and ankles, the boy approached a neighbor and asked for help, prompting a 911 call.

The caller stated, "I think he's been ... he's been detained," while describing the emaciated and wounded state of the child. Authorities swiftly responded to the call and discovered Franke's 10-year-old daughter at the same location. Both children were rushed to the hospital, with the younger ones eventually taken into state custody.

Franke's husband, Kevin Franke, has filed for divorce following the incident. The family's YouTube channel, "8 Passengers," was known for its parenting advice but came under scrutiny for controversial decisions, including a video showing the couple banning their oldest son from his bedroom for seven months and refusing to provide lunch for a kindergartener who forgot it at home.

Franke also faced criticism for threatening to cut the head off a young girl's stuffed toy as a punishment. In one video, she revealed that her two youngest children wouldn't receive gifts from Santa Claus one year due to their behavior.

The shocking case revealed that Franke had been influenced by a relationship counselor, Jodi Hildebrandt, who manipulated her sense of morality, leading to the abuse. Franke's attorney, LaMar Winward, explained, "Ruby Franke is a devoted mother and is also a woman committed to constant improvement." He added, "Hildebrandt systematically isolated Ruby Franke from her extended family, older children, and her husband, Kevin Franke."

Hildebrandt, who is facing allegations in connection with the case, has agreed not to see patients until her situation is addressed by state licensing officials. Her next court hearing is scheduled for December 27. Douglas Terry, her attorney, has not commented on the allegations made by Franke's attorney.

Judge John J. Walton accepted Ruby Franke's plea agreement, leaving her sentencing up to his discretion, which may include prison time. The sentencing is set for February 20. Both Franke and Hildebrandt remain in jail since their arrests.

While incarcerated, Ruby Franke has engaged in introspection, intending to take responsibility for her actions, as stated in a statement by her attorney. The disturbing incident has raised questions about the responsibility of online influencers and the impact their content may have on their personal lives and the lives of their followers.

The "8 Passengers" YouTube channel, which had been active since 2015, came to an abrupt end after seven years, marking a tragic turn in the life of a family once known for sharing their parenting journey online.

  • New Lawyer Appointed for Accused Massachusetts Man in Grisly Murder Case
Brian Walshe, the 48-year-old Cohasset resident accused of murdering his wife, Ana Walshe, and dismembering her body, is set to receive legal representation from attorney Larry Tipton, who has been appointed as his public defender.

The case dates back nearly a year, with Ana Walshe's disappearance and presumed death occurring on New Year's Day. Despite extensive investigations, her body remains undiscovered. The case took a grim turn when prosecutors revealed disturbing internet searches allegedly conducted by Brian Walshe shortly after his wife's disappearance, including inquiries about disposing of a body, dismemberment, and body decomposition.

Attorney Larry Tipton spoke to 5 Investigates on Tuesday, confirming his involvement in the case. "I have been asked to represent Mr. Walshe because he requires a public defender. Our focus will be to ensure a fair and just legal process," Tipton stated.

The charges brought against Brian Walshe include murder, misleading a police investigation/obstruction of justice, and improper conveyance of a human body. He remains held without bail as the investigation continues.

Prosecutors have presented compelling evidence against Walshe, including videos showing him making an unplanned trip to a hardware store where he purchased $450 worth of cleaning supplies in cash. Another video revealed him buying rugs at a different store. Blood and a knife with blood on it were discovered in the basement of the Walshe family's rented home.

One of the most significant developments in the case came when investigators uncovered ten bags of evidence at a transfer station in Peabody. These bags contained Ana Walshe's COVID-19 vaccination card, a necklace matching one she was known to wear, a hacksaw, and a hatchet. Crucially, many of these items were found to have blood on them, and DNA analysis linked them to the Walshe family.

The prosecution's case is built on a series of compelling pieces of evidence, pointing toward Brian Walshe's involvement in his wife's disappearance and alleged murder. As the legal proceedings move forward, the role of attorney Larry Tipton will be critical in ensuring a fair trial for the accused.

The local community continues to closely follow the case, eager for answers surrounding the mysterious disappearance of Ana Walshe. Law enforcement officials have vowed to pursue justice vigorously, and the upcoming legal proceedings will be crucial in determining Brian Walshe's fate.

  • Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Seeks New Trial in Maya Kowalski Case Amid Juror Misconduct Claims
Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHAC) has filed a motion for a new trial in the high-profile Maya Kowalski medical abuse case, citing alleged juror misconduct that could have influenced the previous verdict. The hospital is claiming that a juror's notes containing Nazi symbols indicate bias against one of the defendants, Dr. Sally Smith. This development follows a November verdict awarding Maya Kowalski's family over $260 million in damages due to alleged mistreatment at the hospital.

The controversy revolves around Juror No. 1, who, according to JHAC's motion, wrote notes during the trial with Nazi symbols placed suggestively around Dr. Sally Smith's name. The hospital argues that this behavior demonstrates bias and prejudice against Dr. Smith, equating her with the Nazi Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary organization from World War II.

In response, Maya's attorney, Greg Anderson, expressed strong opposition to the hospital's motion, deeming it "completely and utterly inappropriate." Anderson stated, "Even if there were some way to make a connection — which there's not in any way, shape or form. Going after a juror — and trying to make any connection at all to such a loathsome part of history is … inappropriate and contrary to everything that our rules of professional conduct stand for."

The defense has also alleged other instances of juror misconduct, suggesting that Juror No. 1 may have held negative feelings toward the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). The juror posted a statement about the trial on a public Facebook page associated with the "Take Care of Maya" documentary, expressing opposition to JHAC's motion for a new trial.

Despite these allegations, Anderson maintains that the defense is "grasping at straws" and pursuing various arguments for a new trial. He believes the hospital's desire for a do-over does not align with the jury's verdict and public sentiment. "They just don't understand that the jury, in fact, the country, has rejected their conduct," Anderson added.

The Maya Kowalski case gained significant attention when the jury awarded the Kowalski family substantial damages on November 9th. The family had alleged that JHAC falsely imprisoned Maya, fraudulently billed her family, and caused them severe emotional distress. The jury also determined that social worker Catherine Bedy had battered Maya, and Dr. Smith had medically neglected her.

Maya's medical journey began when she was admitted to JHAC at the age of 10, suffering from a complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Subsequent concerns led to her removal from her parents' custody after staff accused Beata Kowalski, her mother, of medical abuse. The case inspired the popular documentary series "Take Care of Maya."

With a hearing for the new trial set for Friday, the case continues to generate debate and public interest. JHAC's motion for a new trial raises questions about the impact of alleged juror misconduct on the previously awarded damages and the potential for a retrial in this highly contentious medical abuse case.
