  • Johns Hopkins Hospital Requests New Trial Amid Allegations of Juror Misconduct in "Take Care of Maya" Case
The legal battle surrounding the tragic case of Maya Kowalski, featured in the Netflix documentary "Take Care of Maya," has taken a startling turn as Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital seeks a new trial. The hospital alleges juror misconduct during the original proceedings, casting a shadow over the multi-million-dollar verdict awarded to Maya and her family.

Maya Kowalski and her family were awarded over $250 million in damages after a lengthy legal battle against the hospital and the Florida Department of Children and Families. The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that the hospital accused Maya's mother, Beata Kowalski, of Munchausen-by-proxy, which eventually led to her tragic suicide.

While the hospital was found liable on all counts, including false imprisonment, battery, and intentionally inflicting emotional distress on both Maya and her mother, the institution now requests a re-trial. Their request hinges on allegations of juror misconduct, specifically involving Juror #1, who also served as the panel's foreperson.

The hospital's legal team filed a motion on November 22, requesting an interview with Juror #1. A sworn affidavit accompanying the motion claims that there was "potentially harmful" and "presumptively prejudicial" conduct by the juror and his wife. During the trial, the jury was not sequestered, but attorneys for the hospital contend that social media posts by the juror's wife and the juror himself after the trial suggest inappropriate conversations during the proceedings.

The affidavit alleges that the juror's wife posted information, insights, and opinions about the case on multiple YouTube channels, some of which she could have only known through her husband. Additionally, she indicated that the jury did not favor certain witnesses presented by the Defendant.

"On a near daily basis, [Juror #1's wife] spent hours online engaged in commentary about the trial proceeding, both in real-time and after the trial day had ended," the affidavit stated.

The motion also claims that the juror's wife attended the trial in person with a social media influencer known as "Jules," who was described as being closely aligned with the Plaintiffs. Importantly, the hospital's attorneys assert that the juror failed to alert the court about his wife's presence in the courtroom.

Furthermore, the hospital's lawyers accuse the juror of developing a "shared bias" in favor of the Plaintiffs and engaging in improper internet research regarding case-related issues during the trial.

During the initial trial, the hospital's legal team had previously requested Juror #1's removal, citing suspicions of bias in favor of the Plaintiffs.

The Kowalski family's legal victory came after a tumultuous ordeal, during which Maya, then nine years old, sought medical attention for complex regional pain syndrome at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Despite ongoing ketamine infusion therapy, Maya's condition was allegedly dismissed by hospital personnel. When Beata Kowalski, a nurse, advocated for her daughter's treatment, doctors raised suspicions of Munchausen-by-proxy, ultimately leading to Maya's separation from her mother. Tragically, after 87 days apart, Beata took her own life at the age of 43.

During the trial, the Kowalski family's lawyer, Mr. Anderson, argued that Maya had been "falsely imprisoned and battered" and denied communication with her family. The jury unanimously found in favor of the Plaintiffs on all counts.

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital has consistently denied the allegations and insisted that they had no harmful intent towards Ms. Kowalski. Following the verdict earlier this month, the hospital launched an appeal to challenge the decision.

In a recent development, Maya Kowalski filed a criminal complaint alleging sex abuse by the hospital, a claim that emerged during the trial. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that they had investigated the allegations and contacted law enforcement, emphasizing their commitment to patient safety.

  • Pennsylvania Man Accused of Fatally Striking Wife Amid Argument Over Cat's Vet Bill
A tragic incident in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Pennsylvania, has left a community in shock as an 84-year-old man, Barton Seltmann, stands accused of fatally striking his wife, Margaret Seltmann, 85, during a heated argument over money allocated for their cat's veterinary care.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office issued a press release detailing the disturbing events that unfolded in the Seltmann household. On Tuesday at 2:26 p.m., police responded to a 911 call made by Barton Seltmann, leading them to the couple's residence.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a harrowing scene. Barton Seltmann was found on the back porch of their home, his hands, face, and clothing smeared with blood. Tragically, inside the residence, Margaret Seltmann was discovered, described by officials as "obviously deceased."

An investigation revealed the shocking turn of events that transpired during the argument. The couple, locked in a dispute over financial matters related to their cat's veterinary expenses, saw tensions escalate. During this heated exchange, Barton Seltmann allegedly struck his wife multiple times in the head while she lay on the kitchen floor.

The Montgomery County Coroner's Office determined the cause of Margaret Seltmann's death as blunt force injuries to the head, classifying it as a homicide.

Barton Seltmann now faces serious charges, including first-degree murder and third-degree murder. He is currently in custody without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

The investigation uncovered a small kitchen knife and shards of glass from a candle jar beneath the victim's body, shedding light on the tragic and violent nature of the incident.

Remarkably, their beloved cat, a source of the initial disagreement, is now being cared for by a family member, as confirmed by the DA's Office in a Facebook comment.

The case has taken a deeply troubling turn as relatives of the accused reported concerns about Barton Seltmann's mental state in the weeks preceding the fatal confrontation. They revealed that Margaret had expressed worries that her husband was suffering from dementia.

"In the last five or six weeks, Margaret said he was suffering from dementia, he wasn't remembering things. Like if he went somewhere, he didn't remember where he was at and things, and she was concerned about it," shared Barton's sister-in-law, Sandy Seltmann.

Barton's brother, Ron Seltmann, described the couple as happy, with a marriage spanning over 30 years. However, the argument took a violent turn when Margaret allegedly brandished a knife and threatened to kill her husband. According to Barton's account to investigators, he reacted by pushing a chair towards his wife, causing her to fall and hit her head on the floor. Subsequently, he reportedly punched her and struck her head with a candleholder.

Tragically, during the altercation, Margaret allegedly uttered the chilling words, "You're killing me," before, as the probable cause affidavit states, she "went to sleep."

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of conflict resolution and mental health awareness within families, as a simple argument escalated into a devastating tragedy that will forever impact the lives of those involved.

  • Grief and Shock as Funeral Home Owners Accused of Abusing Corpses Face Court
In a heart-wrenching courtroom scene, relatives who believed their loved ones may have been among the 190 decomposing bodies discovered at the Return to Nature Funeral Home watched as the owners, Jon and Carie Hallford, appeared before a judge to face a litany of disturbing charges. The Colorado Springs-based funeral home's facility in Penrose, a quiet Rocky Mountain town, became the epicenter of an unprecedented scandal that has left families in turmoil.

Accused of abusing corpses, theft, money laundering, and forgery, the Hallfords stood in orange jail clothes and handcuffs, remaining silent during a brief court hearing. The revelations surrounding the funeral home have sent shockwaves throughout the community.

The disturbing discovery unfolded when investigators unearthed dozens of stacked bodies at the facility, with some dating as far back as 2019, according to federal affidavits. Families who entrusted their loved ones to the funeral home were told that their relatives had been cremated, but court records allege that they received substitute materials, not their loved ones' ashes.

Heather DeWolf, a grieving mother, attended the hearing and held up a photo of her late son, Zach DeWolf, who passed away at the age of 33 in 2020. Return to Nature had handled her son's remains, and she expressed her profound grief and disbelief: "I don’t view them honestly as human at this point. I don’t believe a human could do this." She recalled the heartbreaking moment she rocked a container, thinking it held her son's ashes, only to question its contents now.

While the FBI has privately told many families that their loved ones were among the decaying bodies, the full extent of how the bodies were mishandled remains unknown to the public. Defense attorneys have objected to the unsealing of affidavits, and the decision on whether to make them public awaits a future judge's ruling.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced plans to demolish the Return to Nature funeral home in Colorado, where authorities uncovered the nearly 200 decaying bodies.  Initially, the Fremont County Department of Public Health & Environment declared the funeral home a public health risk, and now the EPA is stepping in to address the hazardous situation. The agency had scheduled an evaluation of the property in mid-November, but the decision to demolish the building in January 2024 was announced last week. The goal is to remove biological and hazardous materials discovered within the structure safely.

The Hallfords were arrested in Oklahoma, where they had allegedly fled to avoid prosecution. They are currently in police custody, held on a $2 million bond each, and face numerous charges, including about 190 counts of abuse of a corpse, theft, money laundering, and forgery.

Jon Hallford is represented by the public defender's office, which has declined to comment on the case. Carie Hallford is being represented by attorney Michael Stuzynski, who has also declined to comment.

In the aftermath of the grim discovery, authorities have been working diligently to identify the remains. Various methods, including fingerprints, dental records, medical hardware, and DNA, are being employed to establish the identities of those affected.

The shocking revelations have raised questions about the practices of Return to Nature Funeral Home, which offered cremations and "green" burials without embalming fluids. The company, founded in 2017, faced numerous financial crises, including missed tax payments, eviction notices, and lawsuits from suppliers.

When state officials reached out to Jon Hallford after receiving reports of a foul odor, he admitted to having a "problem" at the site and claimed to practice taxidermy there, according to an order dated October 5. However, the extent of the problem and the circumstances surrounding the bodies' mishandling have yet to be fully disclosed to the public.

The FBI's involvement intensified when Jon Hallford ceased using his phone on the day of the funeral home's search, leading authorities to believe he was attempting to evade law enforcement. The subsequent tracking of Carie Hallford's phone to Oklahoma led to the discovery of Jon Hallford's car at his parent's residence and the issuance of a federal court warrant for the couple's arrest.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the nation watches with a mixture of sympathy for the grieving families and a demand for accountability in this deeply disturbing and unprecedented case.

  • Decades-Long Mystery Solved: 1974 Murder Victim in Southern California Identified as Michael Ray Schlicht
After nearly half a century of uncertainty, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has revealed a breakthrough in the case of a murdered teenager found in Southern California in 1974. Through the use of investigative genetic genealogy, authorities have identified the victim as Michael Ray Schlicht, bringing renewed attention to a case that may link him to notorious serial killer Randy Kraft.

On September 14, 1974, the lifeless body of a young man was discovered, and at the time, his cause of death was tragically attributed to accidental alcohol and diazepam intoxication. However, this tragic story took a darker turn in 1980 when investigators noted multiple homicides in 1978 with similar intoxication causes of death. These victims were found within close proximity to Schlicht's location, yet he remained unidentified, known only as "John Doe."

Randy Kraft, infamously labeled "The Scorecard Killer," was arrested during a routine traffic stop in 1983, where police found a deceased man in the passenger seat amid beer bottles and lorazepam tablets. Kraft would later be convicted in 1989 of 16 murders in Southern California, and authorities suspect his involvement in up to 60 deaths between 1972 and 1983. The gruesome details of his crimes, which included torture, sexual assault, and mutilation, earned him his chilling moniker.

Despite his conviction, Kraft has remained on death row at San Quentin State Prison. However, the discovery of tissue samples from Schlicht's unidentified remains brought renewed hope for answers. These samples were submitted to a laboratory to construct a DNA profile. After months of diligent genealogy work, investigators successfully traced the lineage to Schlicht's grandparents.

Authorities then reached out to a granddaughter of the grandparents, who disclosed that she had last seen her brother, Michael Ray Schlicht, in April 1974 when he was just 17 years old. To confirm this revelation, investigators journeyed to Kansas City to obtain a DNA sample from Schlicht's mother, which ultimately led to the positive identification of the once enigmatic "John Doe."

The Orange County Sheriff's Department has reclassified Schlicht's death as a homicide, reopening a case that had long remained unsolved. The investigation is ongoing as authorities delve into the circumstances surrounding Schlicht's murder and his potential connection to Randy Kraft's reign of terror.

This discovery not only brings closure to Schlicht's family after decades of uncertainty but also raises questions about other unsolved cases from that era that may be linked to Kraft. As investigators continue their work, they remain committed to seeking justice for the victims and their families.

The identification of Michael Ray Schlicht is a testament to the power of modern forensic techniques and the dedication of law enforcement in pursuing justice, even after many years have passed.

  • Fatal Stabbing at Philadelphia Macy's: Security Guard Killed, Another Injured in Attempted Shoplifting Incident
Tragedy struck a Macy's store in Center City Philadelphia on Monday morning, resulting in the death of a security guard and injuries to another following an attempted shoplifting incident that escalated into a violent confrontation. The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating the incident, which has left the community and the retail giant in shock.

The incident unfolded around 10:45 a.m. in a Macy's store just one block from City Hall. According to authorities, the male suspect was attempting to steal several hats when he was intercepted by store security personnel. What began as a routine theft prevention effort took a horrifying turn as the situation escalated rapidly.

According to local news reports, the suspect left the store briefly but returned approximately 15 minutes later. It was during this return that he launched a brutal attack, stabbing a 30-year-old security guard in the neck. The assailant's motive for such a violent response remains under investigation.

A second security guard, a 23-year-old man, attempted to intervene in the unfolding tragedy but tragically became a victim himself. The suspect stabbed him in the face and arm, inflicting severe injuries. Police have not yet disclosed the condition of the injured guard.

The 30-year-old security guard who suffered the initial attack was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released at this time, fled from the Macy's store after the violent episode. Authorities quickly launched a search for the assailant, leading to a dramatic pursuit through the city's subway system. The suspect was eventually apprehended around noon, bringing a sense of relief to the community.

In response to the tragic incident, a Macy's spokesperson issued a statement expressing the company's profound sorrow: "We are heartbroken about the incident that took place today at Macy's Center City. The store will temporarily remain closed as we work with law enforcement on this investigation and defer any further comments about the case to them. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority."

The incident has left the Philadelphia community in mourning and has underscored the challenging and sometimes dangerous situations that security personnel may face while performing their duties. Investigations into the motive behind the attack and the circumstances leading to this tragedy are ongoing.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of this shocking event, questions regarding security protocols and safety measures in retail environments may come to the forefront. In the meantime, support and condolences are pouring in for the families of the security guards involved, as well as for the Macy's community affected by this senseless act of violence.

  • Florida Father Sentenced for Child Abuse Claims Job Offers Upon Release, Controversy Surrounds Letter
Tim Ferriter, the Florida father sentenced to five years in prison for locking his adopted son in a box, is seeking release on bond while his attorneys work on his appeal. In a recent court motion, Ferriter's attorneys revealed that he has job offers awaiting him upon release. However, a controversy has arisen over one of the job offers, with an attorney alleging that a letter confirming the offer is a forgery.

Ferriter, 48, was found guilty of aggravated child abuse, false imprisonment, and child neglect on October 12 and was subsequently sentenced to five years in prison, followed by five years of supervised probation on November 16. Now, as he awaits the outcome of his appeal, Ferriter's attorneys have requested his release on bond, citing employment prospects.

According to court documents, Ferriter intends to work for Dream Outdoor Properties as a sales assistant in Jupiter, Florida, upon his release. The documents also mention that he has an alternative job offer from Mazda of Palm Beach. Letters confirming these job offers were included in the court filings.

However, an attorney purporting to represent Mazda of Palm Beach has raised doubts about the authenticity of the job offer. The attorney stated, "Please be advised that the letter purportedly from Mazda of Palm Beach to Judge Howard Coates is a forgery. There is no record of Mr. Ferriter having ever applied for a job at Mazda of Palm Beach, let alone having been offered one."

The conflicting claims surrounding the job offer from Mazda of Palm Beach have added a layer of complexity to Ferriter's legal situation. If the letter is indeed proven to be a forgery, it could have legal repercussions for Ferriter and those involved in presenting it.

Furthermore, court documents indicate that if Tim Ferriter is granted release on bond, he plans to reside with his wife at a home in Palm Beach Gardens. His wife, Tracy Ferriter, was arrested alongside him in February 2022. Tim Ferriter was previously released on a $50,000 bond before his trial.

It is worth noting that before the trial began, Ferriter rejected a plea deal that would have resulted in a two-year prison sentence. Meanwhile, Tracy Ferriter, who is still awaiting her trial, remains entangled in the legal proceedings, which have garnered significant attention and scrutiny from the public.

As the case unfolds, the question of Tim Ferriter's potential release on bond and the authenticity of the job offer from Mazda of Palm Beach will likely remain central topics of discussion. The outcome of his appeal will be closely watched by those following this high-profile child abuse case.

  • Brian Laundrie's Parents Admit He Told Them Gabby Petito Was "Gone," Unveiling New Details in Civil Trial
In a surprising turn of events in the ongoing civil trial between the families of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, it has been revealed that Brian Laundrie's parents admitted to receiving a frantic phone call from him on August 29, 2021, just two days after the day Gabby Petito was believed to have been murdered. During the call, Brian informed his parents that Gabby was "gone" and needed a lawyer, according to attorney Pat Reilly, representing Gabby Petito's family.

This revelation emerged during depositions conducted for the upcoming civil trial, shedding new light on the events surrounding Gabby Petito's tragic death in August 2021.

While Chris and Roberta Laundrie confirmed that Brian told them Gabby was "gone" in the phone call, they did not admit to knowing that she had been killed, emphasizing only that Brian had used the term "gone."

In response to this development, attorney Pat Reilly stated, "I want to know what [Brian] told Bertolino. He probably admitted more. And did [Bertolino] know where Gabby's body was located?" Reilly has filed a motion to compel Steven Bertolino, the Laundries' longtime lawyer, to reveal any additional information he may have received from Brian during the aftermath of Gabby's disappearance. A hearing on this motion, as well as the question of whether Brian's attorney-client privilege should be upheld, is scheduled for December 20 in Sarasota County Circuit Court.

Ryan Gilbert, the attorney representing the Laundries in the Petito civil suit, has not responded to the requests for comment regarding this revelation. Similarly, Steven Bertolino has declined to make any statements on the matter.

The Petito family's allegations in the civil suit are based on the belief that, following Gabby's murder, Brian Laundrie used Gabby's phone to send text messages to her family in an attempt to deceive them. Among these messages, one text was sent to Gabby's mother, Nichole Schmidt, referring to Gabby's grandfather as "Stan." Schmidt has maintained that Gabby never referred to her grandfather by his first name, considering the text highly suspicious.

Nichole Schmidt and Joe Petito, Gabby's father, have brought a lawsuit against the Laundries and Bertolino, accusing them of intentional infliction of emotional distress. The Petito family alleges that the Laundries were aware that Gabby was deceased but chose not to take any actions apart from releasing a statement expressing hope for Gabby's safe return.

The trial for the Petito civil suit, which has experienced several postponements, is currently scheduled for May 2024. This new revelation regarding Brian Laundrie's phone call to his parents has added another layer of complexity to the legal proceedings, potentially bringing forth previously undisclosed information in the highly publicized case.

  • Notorious South Carolina Inmate Susan Smith Discusses Motherhood and Parole Prospects with Suitors
In a recorded jailhouse phone call, Susan Smith, the inmate serving a life sentence for drowning her two sons, discussed her thoughts on motherhood and parole prospects with one of her suitors. As her first parole hearing approaches, Smith faces both opposition from her former husband and offers of support from admirers.

As the date for her first parole hearing, scheduled for November 4, 2024, draws near, Susan Smith, the infamous South Carolina inmate convicted of murdering her two young sons, Michael Daniel Smith, 3, and Alexander Tyler Smith, 14 months, has recently made headlines again. Transcripts of a recorded jailhouse phone call from Leath Correctional Institution last month have revealed Smith's contemplation of motherhood and potential parole prospects.

In the recorded conversation, Smith, now 52 years old, told one of several suitors, "I could see myself around kids," sparking a conversation about her future role as a stepmother. The suitor responded positively, saying, "You'd be great, babe." The Messenger obtained these transcripts, shedding light on Smith's thoughts as her parole hearing approaches.

Smith's notoriety stems from her 1994 conviction for the murder of her two sons. Initially, she claimed that a carjacker, described as a Black man, had taken her vehicle with her children inside. A nationwide search ensued, and Smith tearfully pleaded for their safe return on national television. However, it was later revealed that Smith had intentionally allowed her car to roll into John D. Long Lake, with her sons strapped into their car seats.

One of Smith's former suitors, Tom Findalay, had penned a letter that prosecutors argued played a role in driving her to commit the heinous act. In the letter, Findalay expressed concerns about Smith's children, leading to speculation about her motives. Smith, on the other hand, has long maintained that she did not drown her children for a man's sake but rather suffered a psychotic breakdown.

Relatives of Smith have revealed that men have always been drawn to her, even during her time behind bars. One relative commented, "She's always been into guys, obviously. It would be the best case scenario for her, to be in a relationship. So she's hoping to find the right man to live with if she gets out." This revelation comes as Smith's first parole hearing approaches, where she plans to request her release.

However, her former husband, David Smith, who had stood by her side during the fruitless search for their children and at their funerals, remains vehemently opposed to her release. A relative of David Smith stated, "David still thinks of his boys every day and doesn't ever want Susan to get out. She belongs in jail… she is exactly where she needs to be – in prison. And we will do what it takes to keep her there."

Amidst the polarizing views on her release, Smith's suitors have been actively offering support. Some have offered her money, a place to stay upon parole, and even the prospect of building a future together. One suitor expressed, "She's a good person who did something terrible when she was young and not in her right mind – people can change." These suitors are vying to assist her post-release.

Smith's life behind bars has not been devoid of controversy. Reports have emerged of an illicit sexual relationship with a prison guard, as well as incidents of marijuana use and self-mutilation in her disciplinary record. When not engaging with prospective post-release lovers, Smith often discusses her potential parole with friends and family, seeking advice on how to present her case to the Parole Board.

In a recorded phone call, a friend named Ruth advised Smith to frame her case around the possibility of postpartum depression, which can last up to three years after childbirth. "Prepare now what you will say when you're given the chance to speak at your parole," Ruth advised. "It won't be easy."

As Susan Smith's first parole hearing date looms, the public remains divided on whether she should be granted parole or continue to serve her life sentence for the tragic and shocking crime that has haunted the nation for nearly three decades.

  • YouTube Vlogger Ruby Franke Faces Divorce and Injunction Amid Child Abuse Charges
In a shocking turn of events, Kevin Franke, the husband of renowned YouTube vlogger Ruby Franke, has filed for divorce and a domestic relations injunction, seeking protection amidst a backdrop of child abuse charges against his estranged wife. The case has sent shockwaves through the online parenting community, where Ruby Franke and her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, once thrived as popular content creators.

The divorce filing, submitted in Utah's 4th District Court, comes amid a harrowing child abuse case that Ruby Franke and Hildebrandt have been entangled in, facing six counts of aggravated child abuse. The charges have raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of their children, who were prominently featured in their online content.

The court documents, while not fully accessible to the public, reveal significant provisions in the injunction aimed at ensuring a safe and amicable separation process:

     - **Protection Against Harassment:** Both Kevin and Ruby Franke are prohibited from harassing each other during the divorce proceedings.

     - **Prevention of Domestic Violence:** The injunction strictly forbids any acts of domestic violence against each other or their children.

     - **Misuse of Personal Information:** Neither party is allowed to misuse personal information for any purpose related to the ongoing legal matters.

     - **Financial Safeguards:** The court orders prevent the couple from using each other's likeness to open credit lines and interfering with one another's phone or utility services.

     - **Child Custody Measures:** Specific court orders are in place for non-routine travel with their children, indicating the importance of safeguarding their well-being.

The divorce filing and injunction come in the wake of a disturbing incident where Ruby Franke's 12-year-old son managed to escape their home, appearing emaciated and with duct tape on his body. A 911 call led the police to discover not only the 12-year-old but also his malnourished 10-year-old sister within their mother's residence. All the children, including Kevin Franke's other offspring, have now been placed in state custody.

Kevin Franke's attorney has stated that his client and Ruby Franke had been living separately for about a year and claimed to be unaware of the alleged abuse occurring in Ruby's household during that time. This separation could have played a pivotal role in Kevin Franke's decision to file for divorce and seek the domestic relations injunction.

An additional layer of complexity to this already tumultuous situation was added when an ongoing child welfare case involving the couple was ordered sealed by a judge on October 10th. Kevin Franke had been actively seeking custody of their children, citing potential harm to the minor parties involved due to public and media interest in the case.

The shocking developments in the Franke family's personal life have raised questions about the responsibilities of social media influencers and the potential consequences of sharing their lives online, especially when it involves children. As the legal proceedings continue and the child abuse case unfolds, the online parenting community and the public at large will be watching closely, hoping for a resolution that ensures the safety and well-being of the Franke children.

  • DNA Match Links Murder Suspect's Wife to Crime Scene, Lawyers Offer Differing Views on Significance
DNA evidence has taken center stage in the ongoing murder case against Rex Heuermann, the prime suspect in the deaths of three women near Gilgo Beach in 2010. A recent development reveals that a cheek swab taken from Heuermann's estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, matches the DNA found on the burlap that was used to wrap the victims' bodies, according to sources close to the investigation.

Asa Ellerup's DNA sample was collected on July 13, the same day her husband was arrested and charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. This revelation has raised questions about the potential implications of her DNA being found at the crime scene.

Ellerup's lawyer, Robert Macedonio, downplayed the significance of the DNA match, suggesting it could be the result of a "hair transfer inside the house." He emphasized that Ellerup has not been accused of any involvement in the alleged murders and was out of the country when each of the crimes is believed to have taken place.

Meanwhile, experts have noted that Rex Heuermann's hair was also found under Megan Waterman's body. This hair contained mitochondrial DNA, which could provide additional genetic clues. However, Heuermann's lawyer, Michael J. Brown, has asserted that mitochondrial DNA does not directly identify a suspect, as it could potentially match thousands of individuals in the area.

"There is nobody on the face of this Earth, that is credible, who is going to say the hair is from my client," Brown stated. "That is impossible under science standards. What they can do is say potentially he [Heuermann] is a donor. But so could thousands and thousands of other persons in our area."

Suffolk prosecutors have previously indicated that Heuermann's DNA matched samples found on a discarded pizza box near his Manhattan office. This match is among the evidence linking him to the murders of the three women.

Rex Heuermann, a 60-year-old man, has been accused of killing the three women and dumping their bodies along Gilgo Beach in December 2010. Additionally, he is considered a prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25. Police have relied on various sources of evidence, including cellphone records, witness accounts, and DNA analysis, to establish these connections.

Notably, Asa Ellerup filed for divorce following her husband's arrest, indicating a strained relationship in the wake of the murder charges against him. The recent revelation of her DNA matching evidence at the crime scene adds another layer of complexity to a case that has garnered significant attention over the years.

The question of how significant this DNA match will prove to be in court remains uncertain. As legal proceedings continue, both sides are likely to scrutinize the DNA evidence, attempting to establish its relevance and reliability. This development raises new questions in a case that has already spanned more than a decade, leaving the public and legal experts eager to see how it will ultimately unfold.
