  • 120: Negasi Zuberi's Trail of Terror
In a recent, chilling discovery, Negasi Zuberi, 29, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the harrowing kidnapping of a woman he confined in a makeshift cinder block cell within his Oregon home's garage. This terrifying incident highlights Zuberi's extensive history of alleged violent acts and misdemeanors, spreading across multiple states and affecting countless lives.

    Oregon Incident: The Terrifying Escape
According to authorities, Zuberi lured the woman into captivity after posing as an undercover police officer in Seattle. He then drove her hundreds of miles away to Klamath Falls, Oregon, where he locked her up in what the FBI’s Portland Field Office described as a "makeshift" concrete cell.

In a testament to her willpower and determination to survive, the woman managed to escape, albeit with bloodied hands, after beating down the cell door. Stephanie Shark, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Portland field office, stated, "According to the complaint, this woman was kidnapped, chained, sexually assaulted, and locked in a cinderblock cell. Her quick thinking and will to survive may have saved other women from a similar nightmare.”

    Zuberi’s Alarming Past
Delving into Zuberi's past, we uncover a series of alarming incidents that paint a portrait of a man with a penchant for violence and manipulation. In July 2020, Alycia Westfall, Zuberi's wife, detailed in a request for a protective order his alleged violent actions towards her and their two children. Westfall stated, "He screams at the kids and me, threatens me verbally, financially and mentally abusive to all of us.” She also shared that Zuberi took control of her finances, took her phone, and even escalated violence when she attempted to involve the police.

However, the protective order was temporarily granted, requiring Zuberi to maintain a 100-yard distance from Westfall and their children. Despite the evidence, the order was mysteriously dismissed in September 2020, with no recorded reasoning.

Moreover, before his Oregon arrest, Zuberi's reputation was far from clean. He's been associated with previous assault accusations, eviction proceedings, and has lived in numerous states since 2016, making his track record complex and concerning. Court records have uncovered multiple complaints against him, hinting at a pattern of abusive behavior.

In California, Zuberi, who went under multiple aliases including Justin Kouassi, Justin Joshua Hyche, and Sakima Zuberi, faced a restraining order filed by a woman accusing him of domestic violence. As reported by NBC News, the woman claimed he had threatened and physically abused her and her children.

Records from Colorado paint a similar picture. Under the name Justin Kouassi, he was reportedly accused of physical assault, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Abishek Kandar, a previous landlord from Vancouver, Washington, described his problematic tenancy. Zuberi had allegedly defaulted on rent for half a year, engaged in illegal subletting, and had even purportedly threatened neighbors. Reflecting on his experiences with Zuberi, Kandar didn’t mince his words: “He is a horrible person. He deserves to be in jail.”

    The Web of Deception
Zuberi's intricate web of deception extends further than his aliases. Investigators suspect that he utilized various tactics to control his victims, including pretending to be a law enforcement officer, drugging their drinks, or seeking out sex workers only to assault them. Disturbingly, some assaults might have been filmed under the guise of consensual activities.

Evidence gathered from Zuberi's Klamath Falls residence indicated meticulous planning on his part. A note titled "Operation Take Over" included instructions such as "Leave phone at home" and guidelines for selecting potential victims. Moreover, sketches of what seemed to be an underground structure with details like "foam insulation" and "waterproof concrete" further hinted at his sinister intentions.

Given the breadth of his alleged offenses, authorities are urging any potential victims across the states he has resided – which include California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Alabama, and Nevada – to step forward.

Zuberi's case underscores the importance of vigilance, both in personal safety and in ensuring that justice is relentlessly pursued. The brave woman who managed to escape his grasp not only saved herself but potentially prevented future atrocities.

  • 120: Does Kohberger Have the Weakest Alibi In History?
Bryan Kohberger's, 'I like to drive at night' defense may seem weak to most. But he's not the only one who has offered an alibi that makes little to no sense. Here's a look at some of the other dumbest alibis in history.

The "Twinkie Defense" (Dan White, 1978)
Description: The 1978 murders of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk shook the nation. The man responsible, Dan White, was a former San Francisco Board of Supervisors member. At his trial, the defense attorney presented a unique argument suggesting that White's consumption of junk food, particularly Twinkies, was symptomatic of his severe depression. This was not to argue that the Twinkies caused his actions but to highlight his compromised mental state. The media latched onto this defense aspect and dubbed it the "Twinkie defense," a name stuck in popular culture. While the defense might seem trivial or laughable, its implications were anything but. Using this argument of diminished capacity, White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter instead of first-degree murder. The public reacted strongly, leading to the White Night riots in San Francisco. The case and its outcome had a lasting impact on legal discussions about responsibility, mental health, and how they're addressed in the courtroom.

The "Dog Ate My Homework" Defense (Andrew Zieleniewski, 1993)
Description: Andrew Zieleniewski's defense during his murder trial in the UK was reminiscent of an oft-used childhood excuse: that his dog had consumed his homework, and he was at home during the crime's occurrence, trying to retrieve it. This alibi might seem almost humorous in its simplicity, but its utilization in a serious criminal trial underscores the lengths to which individuals might go to establish innocence. Despite the peculiar nature of the excuse, it didn't hold up in court. The jury dismissed his claim, and Zieleniewski was convicted. The case serves as a testament to the intricate and sometimes bizarre narratives defendants might weave to escape justice.

The "Television Hypnosis" Alibi (Simon MacMillan, 1990s)
Description: Simon MacMillan, accused of theft, presented one of the most unusual alibis: he claimed he was under the spell of a TV hypnosis show during his crime. While not a murder case, it remains noteworthy for its audacity. MacMillan's defense hinged on the idea that television could induce a state of suggestibility so profound that one could commit crimes without being aware. In a world where concerns about media's influence have always been rife, MacMillan's defense pushed the boundaries of these fears. However, courts, grounded in scientific reasoning, didn't give credence to this narrative, further reinforcing the necessity for evidence-based defenses.

The "Sleepwalking Killer" (Kenneth Parks, 1987)
Description: Kenneth Parks' case is remarkable in legal annals. Parks had a well-documented history of sleep disorders. One fateful night, he drove 20 kilometers to his in-laws' home, assaulted both, and killed his mother-in-law. He then drove to a police station, and confessed, but with a twist: he claimed he had done all of this while sleepwalking. Medical experts supported his claims, pointing to a rare form of sleep disorder. The jury faced a moral and legal dilemma: can someone be held responsible for actions committed in a state they have no control over or recall of? Ultimately, Parks was acquitted, leading to global discussions about sleep disorders, legal responsibility, and where the two intersect.

The "Werewolf Defense" (Bill Ramsey, 1980s)
Description: Bill Ramsey's claims were perhaps more fitting for a horror movie script than a courtroom. During the 1980s in the UK, after a series of violent incidents, Ramsey proclaimed that he occasionally transformed into a werewolf, losing control during these episodes. Sporadic and unpredictable violent outbursts backed his claims, but no concrete evidence supported the supernatural aspect of his assertions. In 1989, after much public attention and media coverage, Ramsey underwent an exorcism, believed by some to rid him of his "werewolf spirit." While his claims were never used as a formal defense in court, they added a chapter to the annals of bizarre explanations for violent behavior.

Each of these cases not only underscores the complexities of the human psyche and the lengths individuals might go to distance themselves from their actions but also challenges legal systems worldwide to consider and adapt to ever-evolving narratives of responsibility.

  • 120: Adam Montgomery Denies Killing Daughter While Being Sentenced For Weapons Charges
In a high-tension hearing at the Hillsboro Superior Court on Monday, Adam Montgomery faced the bench not only for serious weapons and firearms charges but to also vehemently deny allegations about the tragic death of his 5-year-old daughter, Harmony Montgomery.

"Your Honor, I stand before you, handcuffed, in this stark orange prison attire, not as a symbol of my guilt regarding Harmony, but as a result of my confirmed crimes," began Adam, casting a determined gaze around the courtroom. His voice cracked with emotion, yet he continued, "Let me make this clear. I love my daughter, Harmony, with every fiber of my being, unconditionally. I did not, and could not, harm her."

The tragic story of Harmony Montgomery has been under the spotlight since December 2019, the last month she was reportedly seen. Her father, Adam Montgomery, is currently being indicted with a charge of second-degree murder in connection to her disappearance.

Parallelly, in a separate trial in June, Montgomery was pronounced guilty on a slew of charges, painting a dangerous picture of the man. These charges included being an armed career criminal with possession of both a shotgun and a rifle, receiving stolen property in the form of the same weapons, theft through unauthorized means involving those firearms, and attempted sales of these stolen firearms. The weighty 'armed career criminal' label alone can bring a minimum prison sentence of a decade.

But during his recent hearing, Adam was quick to draw a line between his proven crimes and the grave accusations against him regarding his daughter's fate. "I acknowledge and respect the jury's verdict. They saw me as the man guilty of the weapon-related charges, and I'm not standing here to challenge that," he stated assertively. His eyes pleaded with the court, "But, Your Honor, I beg of you, when deliberating my case, please separate the weapons charges from the heart-wrenching situation involving my beloved daughter."

Mr. Montgomery continued, visibly gathering strength with every word, “Those allegations, those offensive claims that I harmed Harmony, I will fight tooth and nail in my upcoming trial to clear my name." He paused, taking a deep breath, “Your Honor, perhaps it might be hard to grasp, but I didn’t choose the path of addiction. You might find it difficult to believe, but I never willingly wanted this for myself. While I serve time for my acknowledged crimes, I am committed to reflecting, realizing my mistakes as an addict, and striving every day for a change.”

A haunting image of little Harmony, juxtaposed beside her embattled father, as released by the Manchester Police Department, has become symbolic of this heart-wrenching case. As if emphasizing that very image, Montgomery reiterated, passionately, “I love my daughter, unconditionally. She is my heart, and I could never harm her.”

His final appeal to the judge was filled with earnest desperation, “When you decide my fate today, I beg of you, focus only on the crimes for which I was tried and found guilty. Do not let conjecture, speculation, or emotions related to Harmony cloud your judgment. Consider only the hard facts related to this particular case."

In this gripping tale of crime, redemption, and paternal love, the truth remains elusive. While the court decides on Adam's immediate future, the mystery of Harmony Montgomery's fate still hangs heavy in the air.

  • 119: Daughter of 'Happy Face Killer' Starts GoFundMe to Help Gilgo Beach Suspect's Family 'Start a New Life'
Melissa Moore, the daughter of convicted murderer Keith Jesperson, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support Asa Ellerup and her two adult children, who are the family of alleged Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann. Heuermann was arrested last month and charged with the murder of three women in New York. Melissa's fundraising efforts have already raised over $23,000+ to help the family restart their lives.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison stated that Heuermann's arrest shocked his family, as they were unaware of the double life he was living. Heuermann faces charges of first-degree and second-degree murder concerning the deaths of three women, and he is considered the primary suspect in the murder of another victim.

After a thorough 12-day search of their home by investigators, Ellerup's house was left in disarray. While empathizing with Asa's situation, Melissa aims to assist her and her family start anew. The funds raised will be delivered to Ellerup through her divorce law firm, as she filed for divorce from Heuermann last month. The money will be used for basic needs, restoring their home, covering divorce costs, and addressing other unmet needs.

Melissa, who understands the trauma experienced by family members of serial killers, has previously spoken out about the shame they carry. She hopes to alleviate some of their burdens and remove any guilt associated with their connection to the perpetrator.

  • 119: A Woman Beat Her 78-year-old Mother with 'A can of unopened pasta sauce’ Faces Homicide charges After the Victim Dies
In a tragic incident in Maple Grove, Minnesota, a daughter is accused of attacking her mother during a heated dispute over unpaid rent. According to the Maple Grove Police Department, Nicole Mari Wobbeking, 49, was arrested on July 29 for misdemeanor domestic assault in the fifth degree. However, the charges were later upgraded to assault in the third degree when investigators discovered that the victim, Sheila May Wobbeking, 78, had suffered a broken bone during the altercation.

Initially released after the first arrest, Nicole has been in custody at Hennepin County Jail since the second arrest. Unfortunately, the elder Wobbeking, Sheila, passed away at her home in Plymouth on July 5. Law enforcement in Plymouth alerted authorities in Maple Grove, and detectives are now requesting homicide charges.

The incident occurred on June 27 when Sheila went to her daughter's residence, which she owned and where Nicole was also a tenant, to address the issue of unpaid rent and complaints from nearby individuals. According to the criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime, Nicole became agitated, and a heated confrontation ensued. She allegedly slapped her mother and then violently pushed her down several stairs. To the horror of the investigators, it is reported that Nicole used a jar of unopened pasta sauce to inflict further harm on her mother's ribs and hips.

Despite her injuries, Sheila managed to leave the house with her granddaughter and wait for the arrival of the police. She was taken to a hospital in Maple Grove, where it was discovered that she had suffered a broken ankle in the incident. Tragically, Sheila's condition deteriorated, and she passed away days later.

In the aftermath, Nicole stated that her mother was her landlord and entered the residence without permission, admitting to pushing the stairs down. Now, homicide charges are being pursued. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office has determined that Sheila's death resulted from a pulmonary embolism triggered by the broken ankle sustained in the attack.

As the investigation continues, Maple Grove Police Commander Jon Wetternach said that a decision on the homicide charge is currently pending.

  • 116: Mom gets life in prison for locking 6-year-old son in urine-soaked closet, starving him to death
Elizabeth Archibeque, a 29-year-old mother from Arizona, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder and abuse of her 6-year-old son, Deshaun Martinez. In 2020, Deshaun was found dead, weighing only 18 lbs, after being locked in a urine-soaked closet and starved.

Archibeque pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse, expressing some remorse during the court proceedings. Her lawyer requested the possibility of parole after 35 years, but the judge, Ted Reed, deemed her actions as "heinous, cruel, and depraved" and sentenced her to life imprisonment.

Flagstaff police detective Melissa Seay testified about the horrific conditions in which the children were found. Deshaun's 7-year-old brother was also malnourished, and both boys had been confined to a tiny closet for about 16 hours a day for a month, surrounded by the stench of urine.

The evidence photos were deemed too disturbing to be shown during the sentencing hearing. Archibeque admitted blame for her son's death and accepted the consequences of her actions.

  • 116: Man fatally shot a pregnant woman after an argument over laser pointer
A 25-year-old man named Tyrone Hunter from Ohio has been indicted for the murder of a 26-year-old pregnant woman, Isis LeShay Roseman. The incident occurred last month when Hunter got into a verbal altercation with Roseman and her younger brother over a laser pointer in front of a home in Cincinnati. After threatening to shoot up Roseman's home, Hunter left the scene but returned later and fired shots at the house, one of which struck Roseman and proved fatal. Emergency services rushed her to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.

Hunter has been charged with two counts each of murder and felonious assault, as well as one count of improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation and having a weapon while under disability. It was revealed that at the time of the shooting, Hunter was out on bond for previous violent felonies and drug-related charges. He had a history of run-ins with the law and had been released on a reduced bond despite concerns.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers expressed frustration over the system's leniency, stating that criminals like Hunter should be kept off the streets and held accountable for their actions. Hunter's defense attorney, Clyde Bennett, denied his client's involvement in the crime.

Hunter could face life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 24 years if found guilty on all charges.
