  • 115: When A Beauty Queens Bubble Bursts Into Murder
A former beauty queen's life dramatically transformed from the pageant stage to the courtroom with the latest revelations of her involvement in a nefarious murder plot that rocked the serene islands of the Bahamas.

Lindsay Shiver, the former Miss Houston County and second runner-up in the National Peanut Festival pageant, as reported by WDHN-TV, was arrested along with two co-conspirators, Terrance Bethel and Faron Newbold, on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. At the heart of this scandal is an alleged illicit affair and an intricate murder plot aimed at her husband, Robert Shiver, a one-time Atlanta Falcons player and prominent local figure.

According to the Bahamas Court News, the three were taken into custody in late July following an investigation into a separate incident at a local bar in Guana Cay. The investigators stumbled upon a trove of damning evidence in the form of WhatsApp messages exchanged between the trio that reportedly outlined their meticulously planned attempt to murder Robert Shiver. Bethel, 28, is reported to be Lindsay's lover, further complicating the narrative.

The police report, referenced by the Thomasville Times-Enterprise, states that on July 16, 2023, the threesome "while being together did, with a common purpose agree to commit an offense, namely the murder of [Robert] Shiver." This damning evidence was unearthed during the investigation and has since cast a dark cloud over the usually peaceful islands of Abaco.

Lindsay and Robert Shiver owned a home in the Bahamas, a locale in which she allegedly began her extra-marital affair with Bethel. Robert Shiver, on becoming aware of this betrayal, promptly filed for divorce. In his filings, which were reported by CNN, he cited his wife's "adulterous conduct" as the main reason for their marital breakdown. Lindsay, in her retort, claimed that she had "incurred debt beyond her means to pay" and sought financial assistance from her husband.

In a dramatic turn of events, the former beauty queen and her alleged accomplices were granted bail. Lindsay Shiver's bail was set at a hefty $100,000, while Bethel and Newbold's bail amounted to $20,000 each. Intriguingly, it was Robert Shiver who came forward to bail the three suspects out of jail on August 1, as reported by Bahamas Court News.

After their release, stringent measures have been implemented to ensure the three suspects remain within the law's reach. Lindsay Shiver has been fitted with an ankle monitor and ordered to stay within the boundaries of the Bahamas until her next court appearance, slated for October 5. Bethel and Newbold have also been fitted with tracking devices and are required to report to Marsh Harbour Police on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before 6 p.m., ensuring a close watch is kept on their movements.

Lindsay Shiver, who once held the title of Miss Houston County in 2005, now finds herself embroiled in a scandal that has marred her reputation. In contrast, her estranged husband, Robert Shiver, a former Auburn University football player who also spent a brief period on the Atlanta Falcons roster, has reportedly returned to his home in Thomasville.

As this sensational case unfolds, the Bahamas, often a haven of tranquility and idyllic beauty, has been thrust into the spotlight for a scandal that reads like a crime thriller. The truth behind these allegations will unravel in the coming months as all eyes focus on the October 5 court date.

  • 115: Foster Parents Charged In Case Where Childs Brain Was 'Obliterated'
A chilling case unfolded in the heartland of Pennsylvania this week, as a couple, including a corrections officer, was charged with the death of a young boy who was reportedly subjected to horrific abuse. Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli made the unsettling announcement on July 28, highlighting the relentless pursuit of justice for the innocent victim.

Lauren Maloberti, the boy's adoptive mother, and her husband, Jacob Maloberti, a correctional officer by profession, are now facing a slew of charges that include criminal homicide, first-degree murder, and endangering the welfare of children. Moreover, both of them have been slapped with two counts of aggravated assault of a child and criminal conspiracy, according to official reports.

The victim was identified as 5-year-old Landon Maloberti. On January 30, the child was found unconscious at home and promptly rushed to Allegheny Health Network Hempfield. His condition rapidly deteriorated, necessitating a transfer to Children's Hospital for specialized medical treatment. Despite the medical team's best efforts, Landon succumbed to his severe injuries a week later, on February 7.

DA Ziccarelli detailed the shocking extent of the abuse Landon suffered during a press conference covered by WTAE-TV. She reported that the child sustained blunt force trauma to his head, neck, torso, and extremities. His body was marred by a cruel tapestry of bruises, some fresh, others in different stages of healing, a silent testament to the sustained and systematic abuse. Even more alarming was the report of "prolonged and intensive medical interventions" preceding his untimely demise.

A physician, having reviewed the case, made a grim determination: Landon had been subject to "multiple episodes of physical abuse," further compounded by at least two forms of emotional maltreatment. The inflicted injuries were of such severity that they caused "substantial pain," impairing the child's basic functions, including standing, eating, drinking, and even consciousness.

In a devastating verdict, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner classified Landon's death as a homicide. Further investigation led to disturbing revelations about the defendants' behavior after Landon's injuries. A criminal complaint acquired by WPXI-TV revealed that the accused had allegedly waited a full day before seeking medical help for the severely injured boy. The couple appeared relatively unphased by the situation. Lauren Maloberti attempted to explain away Landon's condition to medical staff, claiming he was "wobbly" due to a previous COVID-19 infection.

Medical staff at Children's Hospital painted a tragic picture. They disclosed that Landon had suffered three distinct brain bleeds, a critical condition that had effectively "obliterated" his brain.

Further inquiries conducted by the police included interviews with the victim's siblings. As per WPXI reports, the children stated that their mother regularly disciplined Landon, who, according to her, was "hard to learn his lesson." She allegedly used an open hand, a wooden spoon, or a spray bottle to administer the physical punishment. Disturbingly, coworkers reported Lauren Maloberti openly expressing her disdain for her adopted son, stating she "hated" him and found him "hard to love."

The detectives reportedly examined text exchanges between the accused couple from April 2022 through February 2023. The messages were allegedly filled with overt expressions of disdain for Landon. Further distressing information emerged when Landon's maternal grandmother told police that her daughter had stopped her from seeing the boy because "he was bad." Even during the festive period, the grandmother was not allowed to see her grandson.

In a solemn statement, DA Ziccarelli said, "Tragically, Landon suffered abuse and trauma over the span of his short life. We intend to prosecute this case with the dignity and honor Landon deserves." Her sentiments were echoed by Delmont Chief of Police T.J. Klobucar, who admitted that in his 25-year career, he had never faced an incident of this magnitude.

This shocking case is a grim reminder of the vital importance of vigilance and reporting suspected child abuse, to protect our society's most vulnerable members.

  • 114: Lori Vallow Daybell Hit With More Murder Charges
The saga of Lori Vallow Daybell, often referred to as the "Doomsday Mom", continues as she is slated to face charges in Arizona, following the completion of her case in Idaho. The Maricopa County Attorney, Rachel Mitchell, announced her intent to file extradition papers for Daybell, who could return to Arizona before year's end. This process is expected to take three to four months.

Daybell's legal complications are far from over. Mitchell divulged, "She is facing two conspiracy cases. One is out of Gilbert for an attempted murder and the other is out of Chandler for an actual murder. So, those would be on top of the convictions she's already received out of Idaho." Daybell's anticipated arrival in Arizona will lead to her detention at a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office jail for what could be a protracted period.

Daybell, aged 50, was sentenced on Monday to life imprisonment without parole for the deaths of her two youngest children and a woman she perceived as a romantic adversary. This complex case was rife with peculiar claims. Daybell suggested that her children were zombies and that she was a divine entity charged with instigating an apocalypse, earning her the "Doomsday Mom" nickname.

In May, Daybell was declared guilty for the killings of her two youngest children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow, and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, and for conspiring to murder Tammy Daybell, the previous wife of her fifth husband. Chad Daybell, her husband, awaits trial on identical murder charges.

In Arizona, Daybell will face severe charges. In 2021, a Maricopa County grand jury indicted her for conspiring to murder her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. According to police reports, Alex Cox, Daybell's brother, shot and killed Charles Vallow in Chandler on July 11, 2019. Additionally, a second Arizona indictment unsealed in May of this year charged Daybell with conspiring to murder Brandon Boudreaux, her niece's ex-husband. Allegedly, Cox shot at Boudreaux in Gilbert on October 2, 2019, but failed to hit him. Cox, who was never charged, died later that year due to what authorities deemed natural causes.

Even though Daybell is already serving multiple life sentences in Idaho, Maricopa County is pressing forward with their cases against her. Mitchell justified this move by stating that it is a matter of securing justice for Daybell's purported victims in Arizona. "If you're the loved one of the victims here or you're the victim here… you're entitled to justice, as well. And so we're going to make sure that that is done in these cases," Mitchell said.

As Daybell's legal journey proceeds, it's becoming evident that she will continue to be subjected to the full force of the law. Despite the multitude of charges already levied against her, the push for justice for her alleged victims remains relentless. Daybell's return to Arizona is a significant step forward in ensuring all the affected parties receive the justice they are due. The result of these additional trials may further seal her fate, cementing her infamous status in the annals of crime history.

  • 114: 13 Years Of Evidence Stacked Against Rex Heuerman In Gilgo Beach Murder Case
The latest development in the infamous Gilgo Beach serial killings has unveiled a massive amount of evidence against the primary suspect, Rex Heuermann, the 59-year-old architect. The array of evidence includes 2,500 pages of documents, numerous crime scene photos, extensive autopsy reports, and hundreds of hours of video footage acquired from Heuermann's residence and professional workspace. The prosecutors disclosed these details during a recent preliminary hearing.

During this brief hearing, the prosecution handed over four hard drives containing significant evidence to Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei and Heuermann's defense attorney. A subsequent pre-trial conference hearing has been arranged for September 27.

Under a protective order, agreed upon by Heuermann's attorney Michael Brown and Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, the release of the evidence remains strictly confined to attorneys. "We’re talking about 13 years of investigation," Tierney stated in a post-hearing press conference, highlighting the enormity of the material and the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Heuermann, clad in a black blazer and light-colored trousers, made his presence known at the hearing hosted at the Arthur M. Cromarty Criminal Court Complex. The courtroom was packed, accommodating about 100 people, including members of the media and public spectators. The suspect remained silent throughout the brief hearing.

Heuermann was indicted last month with three counts each of first-degree and second-degree murder, specifically relating to the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy (24), Megan Waterman (22), and Amber Lynn Costello (27). The discovery of these women's remains back in December 2010 at Gilgo Beach on Long Island’s South Shore led to his arrest.

The dramatic arrest of Heuermann outside his Manhattan office on July 13 marked the most consequential development in the prolonged investigation into the series of mostly young female victims discovered along Gilgo Beach. Heuermann is also under suspicion regarding the disappearance and death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25), whose remains were similarly found near Gilgo Beach. This particular investigation is still in progress.

The victims, now referred to as the “Gilgo Four,” were thought to have been engaged in sex work, utilizing online platforms for advertisement, according to police reports. Some of the victims' family members were present at Tuesday's hearing, as mentioned by Tierney. These victims were discovered during the search for another missing woman, Shannan Gilbert, who was last spotted within the proximate gated community of Oak Beach.

Heuermann, to this point, has pleaded not guilty and firmly denied involvement in the killings. His attorney, Brown, stated post-hearing, “We’re prepared to go forward...We will defend this case in the court of law and we will go to trial in this case.” Brown has also previously labeled the case against Heuermann as “extremely circumstantial in nature.”

Investigators have linked Heuermann to the crime based on DNA recovered from a discarded pizza, which allegedly matches a male hair found on burlap material used to wrap Waterman's body. District Attorney Tierney confirmed that the evidence in the case would encompass “mitochondrial DNA, nuclear DNA,” which has already been tested and deemed admissible in US courts.

  • 113: Listen To Lori Vallow Daybell's Delusional Rant At Sentencing
In an astonishing episode of the popular podcast "Murder In the Morning" hosted by Tony Brueski and Stacy Cole, they dissect the chilling and delusional claims of Lori Vallow Daybell, who is currently under trial for the murder of her children. Daybell asserts her innocence, alleging she communicates with her deceased children and possesses knowledge of the afterlife.

In this episode, Daybell's perplexing court statements were replayed, in which she quoted the New Testament to defend her actions and call into question the judgment passed on her by others. As she declared, "Jesus knows me and Jesus understands me. I mourn with all of you who mourn my children, and to me, Jesus Christ knows the truth of what happened here."

Daybell further explained that she believes no murders occurred, attributing the deaths in her life to accidents, suicides, and medication side effects. An incredulous Brueski responded to her claims, "That's not remotely real." He and Cole struggled to comprehend Daybell's version of events, which they described as "delusional."

Her claims go beyond merely disputing the cause of death. Daybell narrates a vivid experience of having died and visited heaven during labor in 2002, where she met her deceased sister, Stacy. This incident, she alleges, gave her access to the spirit world, allowing her to communicate with her dead children and others.

"She thinks all this shit's real," remarked Cole, expressing disbelief at Daybell's claims of ongoing contact with deceased individuals. According to Daybell, these spirits include her children Tylee Ashland and Joshua Jackson, her friend Tammy Debell – the ex-wife of her husband who was also mysteriously murdered – and other relatives.

"She thinks that she launched these people into a better life, that she's somehow this martyr that she did something great for people that they weren't able to do for themselves," Cole expressed, summarizing Daybell's disturbing perspective. The hosts questioned the mental health of Daybell, referring to her diagnosis of "hyper religiosity with narcissistic features."

Daybell's narrative included graphic descriptions of her daughter, Tylee's, suffering, stating that she had been sexually abused and suffered from a painful health condition. She presented herself as a loving, protective mother despite the accusations against her for murdering her children.

Most shockingly, she claimed her children's spirits visited her after their deaths, assuring her that she hadn't done anything wrong. According to Daybell, Tylee commanded her to stop worrying while Joshua Jackson put his arm around her, expressing his love.

The podcast hosts found these claims deeply disturbing and frightening. Cole expressed concern about Daybell's mental state and the risk she poses to other inmates, deeming her unfit for normal prison conditions. "Even prisoners should not be upset, subjected [to her]," Cole stated.

The hosts concluded that despite Daybell's firm belief in her divine path, her destination might be quite different from the heaven she so vividly described. Brueski concluded, "This whole thing is just frightening and it terrifies me. I don't want her by any other inmates because she is not mentally sound. There's something so terribly wrong with how she thinks."

  • 113: Did Lori Vallow Daybell Brainwash Her Attorney?
In an intriguing episode of the popular podcast "Murder in the Morning," hosts Tony Brueski and Stacy Cole discussed the personal plea made by Lori Vallow Daybell's attorney in court. Vallow Daybell, convicted for the murder of her children, has been a focal point in the podcast's recent episodes. Her attorney's emotional plea has sparked a flurry of reactions and heated debates about the case.

The hosts highlighted the attorney's passionate plea for leniency and understanding for his client, referring to her as "very misunderstood". The attorney drew on his past as a prosecutor and his personal relationship with Vallow Daybell to paint a picture of her that contradicted the damning public image. He emphasized the importance of peace, love, and hope in the aftermath of the trial, implying that society should move toward forgiveness and healing.

The hosts, however, were not convinced. Brueski stated, "Look what she did. She made a freaking plan and carried out that plan to kill her children. And I'm getting really worked up. I'm sorry." His co-host, Cole, echoed his sentiments, calling Vallow Daybell "the most hated woman in America right now, and maybe in the world pretty close."

Despite the attorney's appeal, the hosts questioned whether Vallow Daybell truly embodied the principles of peace and love, or if she merely manipulated those around her. "This woman was able to pull the wool over so many people's eyes for so long. I think she did it with her attorneys. If this is the statement that they're making, she's about love," said Brueski.

The attorney urged the court to give Vallow Daybell a 20-year fixed term with an indeterminate term of life, arguing that it would meet all the goals of sentencing with an added bonus of hope. His argument was that granting her hope would not be a reward but a benefit to society at large.

In response, Brueski retorted, "Why would anyone wanna have hope for Lori Vallow Daybell? She's proven time and time again you can't trust her. She's an evil, horrible human being." Cole echoed his sentiment, indicating that the attorney was defending Vallow Daybell "beyond being the defense attorney", and there were no excuses for her actions.

While the attorney’s plea for Vallow Daybell has stirred up controversy, it also underscores the power of public sentiment in high-profile cases. Despite the attorney’s best efforts, the hosts and many listeners could not reconcile the image of Vallow Daybell as a loving, misunderstood woman with the undeniable evidence of her horrifying crimes. The case continues to captivate public attention, and this podcast episode has brought fresh perspectives and insights into the troubling saga of Lori Vallow Daybell.

  • 112: The Crazy Claims In The Case Of Kohberger
In a dramatic turn of events, an Idaho district court initiated a motion, ordering the defense team of the alleged Idaho quadruple murder suspect, Bryan Kohberger, to produce an alibi. This unprecedented move followed the defense's effort to dismiss the case, citing allegations of the state's manipulation of the Grand Jury.

Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old accused of the fatal stabbing of four university students in their Moscow, Idaho, home, faces mounting pressure to unveil his alibi. The heinous crime occurred in the early hours of November 13, claiming the lives of Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. The trial is scheduled for October, with the prosecution indicating their pursuit of the death penalty as early as June.

In light of the defense team's failure to submit an alibi before Monday's deadline, the state motioned the court to coerce Kohberger into providing a valid excuse for his absence from Moscow on the day of the murders. Prosecutors expect full details of Kohberger's whereabouts, including locations, times, and corroborating witnesses with their respective contact information.

The defense's countermove was to file a motion to dismiss, demanding either the case dismissal or remanding for a preliminary hearing. They argued that the Grand Jury was misled about the standard of proof required for an indictment. Furthermore, Kohberger's lawyers requested a halt in proceedings to contest the jury selection process without infringing on his right to a speedy trial. Both parties have filed motions to seal exhibits, restricting their public disclosure during the trial.

Idaho law specifies that a defendant's alibi defense must be submitted within ten days of a written demand from the prosecuting attorney. The Latah County prosecutor, in this case, made that demand in May, and Kohberger's defense requested an extension, asserting they hadn't been given ample time to review the prosecution's evidence. An extended deadline was set for July 24.

Despite the granted extension, Anne Taylor, Kohberger's attorney, announced on Monday evening that her client would exercise his constitutional right to silence, abstaining from submitting an alibi defense. Taylor affirmed the defense team's ongoing case investigation and preparation. She hinted at evidence corroborating Kohberger's presence elsewhere during the crime, which she promised would be revealed under statutory requirements and according to discovery and evidentiary rules.

Kohberger's defense proposed another layer to their strategy last week by suggesting that the DNA linking him to the knife sheath might have been planted. They requested additional information on how the FBI used DNA to construct family trees, leading to Kohberger. If DNA found at a crime scene doesn't belong to victims, it is customary to run it through a police database to match it with previous offenders' DNA. This technique, called a short tandem repeat (STR) comparison, tests the sample against 20 DNA markers, sufficient for identification if the person or an immediate relative's DNA is already in the system.

A criminal affidavit filed in January reported DNA matching Kohberger's was discovered on a knife sheath near the crime scene, close to Mogen and Goncalves's bodies. Further investigation matched the sheath's DNA to DNA found in trash from Kohberger's parent's home in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested in December. An STR DNA comparison confirmed a statistical match. The knife manufacturer, Ka-Bar, has no record of Kohberger purchasing the utility knife traditionally used as a hunting tool. The actual murder weapon remains undiscovered.

With the trial set for October 2, all eyes are on the proceedings in the Bryan Kohberger case, a situation escalating with each passing day.

  • 112: Judgment Day for Lori Vallow Daybell
In a courtroom laden with tension and anticipation, an Idaho judge has ruled in favor of Tammy Daybell's aunt, Vicki Hoban, granting her the right to address the court during the sentencing of Lori Vallow. Lori Vallow, a woman infamous for the gruesome charges against her, awaits her judgment day in a Fremont County, Idaho courtroom.

The somber aura of the courtroom is a stark contrast to the tumultuous saga that has transpired. Lori, now 50, was convicted on May 12 for the horrific deeds in 2019. The innocent lives of her children, Joshua 'JJ' Vallow, only seven years old, and Tylee Ryan, 16, were snuffed out in their youth. Additionally, the looming charge of conspiracy to commit murder of her husband Chad Daybell's former wife, Tammy Daybell, added an ominous hue to the already grisly tale.

Stepping into this storm of tragedy, Vicki Hoban, Tammy's aunt, had sought to represent her late niece at the sentencing. Initially, Judge Steven Boyce rejected this request. However, following the demise of Tammy's mother in June, Hoban was granted special permission to deliver a victim impact statement.

Vallow's defense team submitted a motion on Friday in a move that stirred up more controversy. Their argument was predicated on Idaho law's definition of 'immediate' family members as victims, a category in which an aunt is not included. Despite their request to prevent Hoban from making her statement, the ruling swung in her favor.

The stoic courtroom witnessed a rather detached Vallow, visible on camera from the Madison County Jail. A bleak image of the convicted woman was captured as she stared ahead, her fist propped under her chin, speaking no word, simply waiting.

Further adding complexity to the already convoluted case, Vallow's attorney, Jim Archibald, contended that the submitted statements of Tammy Daybell's father and sister made Hoban's testimony redundant. As the law excludes aunts, Archibald opined the court's order would be apt if there were no representation from Tammy Daybell's family. However, given the circumstances, Archibald argued, an aunt does not possess the right to represent the family.

In a judicious move, Judge Boyce clarified his initial grant to Hoban was under the impression of Tammy's absence of representation. He highlighted that the statute does not specify that a representative can only be appointed under certain circumstances. Therefore, the impending testimony of three other family members does not exclude Hoban's right to represent her late niece.

As Vallow's eldest son, Colby Ryan, JJ's grandmother, Kay Woodcock, and the child's designated representative, Summer Shiflet, prepare their statements, the courtroom awaits with bated breath.

In a twist of law, Vallow will be granted an opportunity to address the court before her sentence is pronounced. A moment to speak without fear of objection or cross-examination, an opportunity she chose not to take during her trial.

Vallow's previous plea for retrial was dismissed last month. Her attorneys had argued that external influences swayed the jury. The accusations against her were severe - Vallow was convicted for killing her children after falling prey to the illusions of the doomsday predictor, Chad Daybell. The defense argued that the instructions to the jury were muddled and contended that some jurors knew about her alleged crimes that were not officially presented as evidence.

Vallow's attorneys pointed to an interview one juror gave with East Idaho News, revealing knowledge of information not disclosed during the trial. They also claimed changes in the original indictment that occurred without proper notice from the prosecution as grounds for a new trial. However, Judge Boyce, who had presided over Vallow's initial trial, ruled against this motion.

While Vallow stands on the precipice of her fate, her husband, Chad Daybell, awaits his reckoning. With his trial slated for April 1, 2024, Chad watches from the confines of Fremont County Jail. The parallel trials weave a tale of a tormented family facing the stark reality of their actions, each awaiting the heavy hand of justice to pronounce their destinies.
