It started with a custody ruling. Dan Markel, an FSU law professor, won the right to keep his sons in Tallahassee after his divorce from Wendi Adelson — a judge said the boys couldn't be moved. Prosecutors say Wendi's mother, Donna Adelson, tried to buy her way out of that ruling with a million-dollar offer to Markel. He turned it down. Not long after, two men drove five hours from Miami in a rented Prius, waited outside Markel's house, and shot him twice in the head in his own garage — the same morning he'd taken his sons to preschool and gone to the gym. He was 41. The money trail investigators uncovered ran straight through a family dental office near Fort Lauderdale: 44 checks signed by Donna, $138,000 funneled through a woman who never worked there, and a toll transponder receipt marking every mile of the killers' drive. That practice belonged to Donna's son Charlie Adelson, a periodontist prosecutors say orchestrated the entire murder-for-hire plot. Charlie took the stand at his own trial and claimed he was the real victim — extorted by the hitmen, forced into paying them off in installments through his practice. The prosecutor asked him one simple question about why an extortionist would send the victim's girlfriend to collect a payoff. The jury needed three hours to see through it. Five people are convicted, and Charlie's July 2026 appeal failed after his own lawyer filed the wrong motion. Five days before the murder, Wendi Adelson's boyfriend says she told him her brother had looked into hiring a hitman. The day before, she asked him about his Friday driving route near Dan Markel's house, then told him not to contact her for a week. The morning of the killing, she was home waiting for a Geek Squad appointment that prosecutors say her mother Donna scheduled. And about an hour after the shooting, she drove past police tape at Dan's house — knowing her children were supposed to be with him — and didn't make a single call.Jeffrey Lacasse testified to all of this under oath. Wendi denied every word of it under the same oath. One of them lied, and the answer determines whether the state of Florida can charge the woman who moved the children south within days and changed their last name from Markel to Adelson.Five people are serving time for Dan Markel's murder. Wendi Adelson has been named an unindicted co-conspirator and has never been charged. This fourth installment of the Adelson series examines what Lacasse said, what Wendi denied, and the gap prosecutors haven't been able to close. On August 28, Kouri Richins learned the price tag on what she did. A judge set restitution at $1,369,581 — split between Auto Owner’s Insurance and TruStage, the two companies that paid out on the life insurance policies she cashed in after poisoning her husband Eric with fentanyl. Her lawyer accepted the figure without argument. The stay request was denied. Forensic accountant Brooke Karrington mapped the path of that money at trial. Kouri took in $1.35 million. Ninety days later, it was gone. She owed $7.5 million. Four payday lenders were pulling $2,100 from her daily. Her real estate company’s revenue couldn’t cover a third of its monthly obligations. By September 2022, her balance was $800. The court already declared her indigent. Her defense was taxpayer-funded. Her appeal is taxpayer-funded. At Utah’s top prison wage of $1.75 an hour, clearing the restitution would require 376 years of work. And restitution is just the first line on the ledger. Twenty-six felony fraud charges remain active in a separate Summit County case — five mortgage fraud counts, seven money laundering counts, forgery, bad checks, and a pattern-of-unlawful-activity charge connecting the financial crimes to the killing itself. October 9 brings the scheduling conference that sets the second trial in motion. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? There is a persistent assumption that Lindsay Clancy rejected some compromise and forced everyone into this trial. Her lawyer says that never happened. Kevin Reddington says prosecutors did not offer a plea deal. With three first-degree murder charges, the case went before a jury deciding whether Clancy was criminally responsible, guilty of varying homicide offenses or not guilty. Tony Brueski asks what the prosecution ultimately wants the justice system to accomplish. Nobody disputes the enormity of what happened to Cora, Dawson and Callan. The dispute is whether Clancy was legally responsible while experiencing the mental illness both sides acknowledge existed. If prison provides punishment and psychiatric confinement provides treatment plus public protection, which objective matters most? And when prosecutors, defense experts, state experts and now jurors cannot agree, maybe the unresolved question is bigger than Lindsay Clancy herself. Charlie Adelson's defense at trial was that he was being extorted. A periodontist pulling in over three million a year told a jury he was so terrified of two hitmen that he set up a three-thousand-dollar monthly payment plan through his family's dental office. His mother signed the checks. She washed the cash. His girlfriend collected the money and delivered it to the killers.Prosecutor Georgia Cappleman asked one question: "Do extortionists send a girlfriend of the victim to get the money?" The jury deliberated for three hours and convicted him on all counts — first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation. Charlie mouthed the word "No" and put his head on the defense table. This second installment of the four-part Adelson series covers the path from the hitmen's convictions through Magbanua's flip to Charlie's trial and the three-hour verdict that ended a millionaire's freedom. His appeal was affirmed in July 2026 after his attorney failed to file a required written motion — the procedural equivalent of a dentist leaving an instrument inside a patient.
