  • Episode 34: The Frantic Move Online: A Real-Time Look at How Higher Ed is Responding to the Coronavirus (Special Edition)
To say it has been a crazy week might be the greatest understatement of 2020. We’re a weekly podcast, but in light of all of the fear, confusion, and frustration plaguing higher education as a result of COVID-19, we’re bringing you this special edition. Around the world, nearly 300 million students have been sent home over coronavirus fears. Universities are scrambling to create plans in the event of a local outbreak, and for many, the answer is to move courses online.
Yesterday, Zach Busekrus sat down with Nathan Greeno, the Senior Vice President of Global Program Strategy at 2U, to discuss how schools are responding to the COVID-19 outbreak and, in particular, the challenges many are facing as they prepare to move coursework fully online. 2U is a global leader in education technology that partners with over 70 of the world's leading universities to build, deliver, and support more than 400 digital and in-person educational offerings.
While a high-quality online degree typically takes months — if not years — to get off the ground, coronavirus is forcing many institutions to provision hundreds of online courses in a matter of weeks — Nathan provides insight into how 2U is assisting schools doing just that. Among others, Zach asks Nathan the following questions:
    - Can you spend a couple of minutes fleshing out how higher education leadership can migrate course content online as efficient and effectively as possible? Where do folks begin? What stakeholders need to be present in these conversations?
    - What positive opportunities do you believe this “coronavirus crisis” creates for higher education? If any?
    - Considering this current reality, if there were three things you could mandate that all listeners to today’s show do immediately after listening to this podcast, what would they be? - - - -

  • Episode 33: What GEM Professionals Need to Know About Recruiting Grad Students — From the Perspective of a Grad Student (Who Works in Graduate Admissions)
Erin Fields is not only currently pursuing a Master’s in Integrated Marketing and Communications at West Virginia University, she’s also a graduate assistant at WVU’s Office of Graduate Admissions and Recruitment. On this week’s episode of the podcast, we feature the story of Erin’s journey to graduate school and ask her hard questions about how being a grad student influences the way she helps recruit future grad students.
Erin transparently shares about the research she conducted as she discerned if, when, and where to pursue a master’s degree and how she handled skeptical questions from family and friends about the value of going to grad school immediately after completing her undergraduate education.
Furthermore, Erin gives a plethora of tips on how graduate enrollment marketers can do a better job attracting, engaging, and delighting future students. - - - -

  • Episode 32: Making the Case for Independent Schools: A Conversation on the Future of K-12 Marketing and Student Recruitment
"Gone are the days when we could just rest on our laurels and meet our enrollment goals”, says Angela Brown, the Director of Marketing and Communications at Flint Hill School, a K-12 independent school located in Oakton, Virginia. On this week’s episode, Zach Busekrus chats with Angela about the greatest opportunities and challenges that the independent school market faces in 2020. Angela discusses the importance of knowing who you are and owning how you’re different in an increasingly crowded space. Independent schools aren’t just competing against each other today, they’re competing against increasingly well-funded public and charter schools as well. Among others, Angela answers the following questions:
    1. How can colleges and universities do a better job at building relationships with independent schools? What do you wish schools would do more of (or less of) as it pertains to recruiting today’s high school students?
    2. From a marketing standpoint, how is independent student recruitment different form recruiting at the post-secondary levels?
    3. Many of our listeners are enrollment marketers working at colleges and universities. Many of them operate in environments where admissions and marketing are siloed. How has Flint Hill been able to pull together influencers from a variety of departments to execute a successful rebrand? - - - -

  • Episode 31: The Clock is Ticking — A Conversation with Brandon Busteed on What Higher Ed Needs to do to Remain Relevant
This week, The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article noting that 6 in 10 colleges missed their fall enrollment goals (these results come from The Chronicle’s most recent enrollment survey of close to 300 colleges and universities). To say that higher ed is in facing serious challenges, is an understatement — “crisis” might be a more appropriate word.
The good news? We’re living through one of the greatest moments of innovation in history. And where there is innovation, there is also hope.
On this week’s episode of The Enrollify Podcast, Zach Busekrus sits down with Brandon Busteed, President of Kaplan University Partners, to discuss what higher ed needs to do remain relevant in 2020 and beyond.
Brandon makes the case that Liberal Arts schools should offer “Credegrees” — a term used to describe a program where a student graduates with both a traditional degree and some sort of industry-recognized skill or credential, discusses how to reduce friction in the student experience, and shares his own story about his tenure as a higher education entrepreneur, speaker, writer and university trustee.
Tune into an exciting conversation about how enrollment marketers can strategically adapt to the environment we find ourselves in today. - - - -

  • Episode 30: Changing Perceptions through Connection — How One Graduate School Recruited International Students in the Trump Era
International student enrollment has been on the decline since the fall of 2016, and, according to estimates from NAFSA, has cost the US economy $11.8 billion and more than 65,000 jobs. In an interview with CNN from last November, Rachel Banks, the Director of Public Policy at NAFSA said, "There's many variables, but largely it's been the policies and rhetoric from the current administration that's really driven the numbers to move in that direction.” This current reality has been dubbed “The Trump Effect” or “The Trump Factor” by education professionals across the industry.
On this week’s episode, we sit down with Katie Beczak, who is the Associate Director of International Enrollment at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), to discuss the impact Trump’s presidency has had on their bottom-line. Katie shares how the enrollment management team at RIT has been able to successfully attract, enroll, and retain graduate students during a time when many other institutions are struggling to do so. Throughout the conversation, we wrestle with questions like:
    1. Have you heard any response from international student prospects after Trump became president regarding the idea of pursuing graduate education in the US? Were there any common sentiments or frequently asked questions or concerns?
    2. Do you think there’s been a change in the perception of value from the international stage for pursuing graduate education in the US? Why or why not?
    3. What has been your marketing and student recruitment response to this? Can you talk in detail about any tactical or strategic shifts you’ve made? What strategies and tactics have you used in the past to attract international students and which are you using now?
    4. What market factors do you think could be impacting your international graduate student enrollment BEYOND the Trump effect? - - - -

  • Episode 29: Why There’s No Such Thing as a Stealth Applicant
If you have ever worked in an enrollment office or marcomm department for any educational institution, you’re probably already familiar with the term “stealth applicants” — a term commonly used to refer to applicants who show up in the system without any previous interaction with your brand. Enrollment managers, admissions officers, and higher ed marketers alike have used this term for many years to describe the seemingly unstoppable force of a certain number of prospective students that will essentially fly under the radar and appear at the application stage of the admissions process.
On this week’s episode of the Enrollify Podcast, we sit down with Tony Fraga, the CEO of DD (an enrollment marketing technology agency). Over the past 14 years of working with schools of all shapes and sizes, Tony has grown accustomed to hearing statements like, “Well there are always some stealth applicants that will come into the applicant pool” and “We’re seeing more stealth applicants than ever before, so we can’t really count on certain marketing tactics.” Tune into this conversation to learn why Tony believes stealth applicants don’t actually exist, and what enrollment marketers can do to eliminate them within the context of their enrollment offices! - - - -

  • Episode 28: Why I Transitioned from Advising to Graduate Admissions — And What I Learned Along the Way
Jessica Cox started her career in higher education working in advising at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York. Manhattanville College’s advising office is anything but typical — it operates more like a customer success department than it does a customer service department, which means that Jessica was intimately involved in ensuring that students AND alumni were thriving during the program and after graduation. After almost three years, Jessica decided to take what she’d learned while accompanying graduate education students through their respective programs and apply it on the front lines – in the office of graduate admissions and recruitment. On this week’s episode, Zach Busekrus sits down with Jessica to discuss:
    - Why Jessica left advising for admissions
    - How enrollment marketers working in graduate admissions can do a better job at reducing friction during the handoff between admissions and advising
    - How her advising experience enabled Jessica to be a better enrollment marketing and “sales” professional - - - -

  • Episode 27: The Future of Student Lifecycle Management — A Conversation with the CEO of TargetX
Have you ever walked through the application process at your institution? From initial inquiry all the way through deposit? If you have, were you surprised by the amount of friction you encountered along the way? On this week’s episode, Zach Busekrus sits down with Sasha Peterson, the CEO of TargetX, to discuss the future of student lifecycle management. Sasha casts a new vision for reimagining the student experience and explores the various roles that technology, process, and humans play in the creation of (and reduction of) friction in a prospective student’s journey to school. Sasha has worked in the education technology space for over 20 years now, and has incredible insight into what a thriving relationship between software, enrollment marketers, and students should look and feel like. In this episode, Sasha tackles the following questions:
    - What is the difference between Student Lifecycle Management and Enrollment Management?
    - Dozens of software solutions over the last decade, TargetX included, have claimed to be the solution to our nation’s retention problem and yet, we still can’t get graduation rates above 60%.  Why do you think this is?
    - What do schools need to have in place before they purchase enrollment management and student retention software?  How do schools evaluate if they’re ready or not?
    - What do you think TargetX does better than any other higher ed CRM?  Where do you think you all have the most opportunity to grow? - - - -
