During the darkest years of the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow became two of the most famous—and romanticized—outlaws in American history.

Young, photogenic, and constantly on the run, Bonnie and Clyde crisscrossed the central United States with the Barrow Gang, robbing banks, gas stations, and small businesses while repeatedly slipping through the hands of law enforcement. Photographs discovered by police showing Bonnie posing with guns helped transform the couple into Depression-era celebrities.

But behind the mythology was real violence.

Clyde and members of his gang were linked to numerous killings, including the deaths of law-enforcement officers and civilians. Their crimes grew increasingly violent as their notoriety spread, and by 1933 federal authorities had joined the hunt after Bonnie and Clyde were accused of transporting a stolen automobile across state lines.

Clyde’s hatred of the Texas prison system also played an important role in his story. In January 1934, he helped orchestrate a daring breakout from the Eastham Prison Farm, freeing several inmates and escalating the determination of Texas authorities to stop him once and for all.

Enter legendary former Texas Ranger Frank Hamer.

Hamer was brought into the manhunt and began studying the couple’s movements, eventually anticipating where they would travel next. With help from information connected to fellow gang member Henry Methvin and his family, lawmen prepared an ambush along a rural Louisiana road.

On the morning of May 23, 1934, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow drove into the trap near Gibsland in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. A posse opened fire on their Ford V-8, killing both of them instantly and ending one of the most famous crime sprees of the twentieth century.

Bonnie was 23. Clyde was 25.

Their deaths did not end their story.

Books, songs, photographs, and especially the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde transformed them into pop-culture icons—young lovers living fast, defying authority, and dying together. But the legend often obscures the people robbed, terrorized, and killed during their years on the run.

In November 1996, a group of teenagers from Murray, Kentucky, headed south toward Florida with plans to eventually make their way to New Orleans. They called themselves a Vampire Clan, drank one another’s blood, embraced vampire mythology, and followed their charismatic teenage leader, Roderick “Rod” Ferrell.

Ferrell was only 16 years old.

He called himself Vesago and had become deeply immersed in vampire role-playing and the identity he had created around it. Among the teenagers connected to the group was Heather Wendorf, a friend of Ferrell’s who wanted to leave her home in Eustis, Florida.

Then, on November 25, 1996, Heather’s parents were found murdered.

Richard Wendorf and Naoma Ruth Queen had been beaten to death inside their home. Ferrell and fellow teenager Howard Scott Anderson had entered through the garage, and Ferrell later admitted killing the couple with a crowbar. Heather and the other girls traveling with the group were not at the house when the murders occurred.

The teenagers fled Florida, setting off a multistate manhunt. Their run ended in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after a phone call made by one of the group members helped authorities locate them.

In 1998, Ferrell pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, along with armed burglary and armed robbery. He was sentenced to death, making him one of the youngest people on Florida’s death row at the time.

But because Ferrell had been only 16 when he committed the murders, the Florida Supreme Court overturned his death sentences in 2000 and reduced them to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The murders became known as the Vampire Murders, a case where teenage rebellion, fantasy, troubled family lives, and an obsession with vampirism collided with very real violence.

In the 1990s, Joseph Roy “Joe” Metheny became one of Baltimore’s most disturbing convicted killers—a massive, intimidating man who later claimed his crimes went far beyond the murders authorities could prove.

Metheny was convicted of killing Cathy Ann Magaziner and Kimberly Lynn Spicer, and he was also convicted in a separate case involving the kidnapping and attempted sexual assault of Rita Kemper, who managed to escape and survive.

After his arrest, Metheny began confessing to additional murders.

He claimed to have killed as many as 10 to 13 people, including women involved in sex work and men living in homeless encampments around Baltimore. But investigators were unable to verify many of those confessions, and Metheny had previously been acquitted in connection with two other killings.

Then came the claim that made his name infamous.

Metheny said he had dismembered some victims, mixed their flesh with pork and beef, and sold the meat as barbecue sandwiches to unsuspecting customers from a roadside stand.

It is a horrifying story repeated endlessly in true crime—but there is an important problem: authorities never independently proved that Metheny actually served human flesh to customers. His cannibalism story came largely from Metheny himself, a convicted murderer whose claims about his own crimes were not always verifiable.

Metheny was sentenced to death for Kimberly Spicer’s murder, but that sentence was later overturned and reduced to life without parole. He received another life sentence for Cathy Magaziner’s murder.

On August 5, 2017, Joe Metheny was found dead inside his cell at Western Correctional Institution in Maryland. He was 62 years old.

Before the books, before the movies, and before the stories of demons and haunted rooms, there was a very real family murdered inside 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York.

In the early morning hours of November 13, 1974, 23-year-old Ronald “Butch” DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family while they were inside their home: his parents, Ronald DeFeo Sr. and Louise DeFeo, and his four younger siblings, Dawn, Allison, Marc, and John Matthew.

All six victims were found in their beds.

DeFeo initially tried to blame the murders on organized crime, but by the following day he had confessed. In 1975, he was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to six concurrent terms of 25 years to life. He remained incarcerated until his death in 2021.

But the murders were only the beginning of the Amityville legend.

Thirteen months later, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the Ocean Avenue house with their three children. They stayed for just 28 days before fleeing, claiming they had experienced terrifying paranormal phenomena inside the home. Those allegations eventually became the basis for Jay Anson’s bestselling book The Amityville Horror and the enormously successful horror-film franchise that followed.

Whether the Lutz family truly experienced something supernatural remains fiercely disputed. Ronald DeFeo’s former attorney, William Weber, later claimed that aspects of the haunting story had been created with George and Kathy Lutz, while the Lutzes continued to defend their experiences as genuine. Later owners of the house have reported no comparable paranormal activity.

But there is nothing fictional about what happened to the DeFeo family.

Six people were murdered inside that house long before Hollywood ever arrived.

In 1994, a killer began moving up and down America’s East Coast, leaving murdered men behind in Florida, Georgia, and Maryland.

His name was Gary Ray Bowles, and the string of killings would earn him the nickname the I-95 Killer.

Bowles often met his victims in bars or while drifting from place to place. Many were older gay men who offered him companionship, money, or a place to stay. Once inside their homes, Bowles turned on them—beating, strangling, and robbing the very men who had trusted him.

His first known victim was 59-year-old John Hardy Roberts, murdered in Daytona Beach, Florida, in March 1994.

Over the next several months, five more men would die: David Alan Jarman, Milton Joseph Bradley, Alverson Carter Jr., Albert Morris, and Walter “Jay” Hinton.

As the bodies accumulated along the Interstate 95 corridor, authorities realized they were hunting a serial killer.

Bowles became one of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives, but he continued moving from city to city, using aliases and staying one step ahead of police.

Then, in November 1994, investigators caught up with him in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

When police questioned the man they had in custody, fingerprints confirmed what investigators had been desperately hoping to learn:

They had finally caught Gary Ray Bowles.

Bowles confessed to killing six men during his eight-month spree. He ultimately received the death penalty for the murder of Walter Hinton, whom he had beaten with a heavy concrete stepping stone and strangled inside Hinton’s Jacksonville Beach home.

On August 22, 2019, after spending more than two decades on Florida’s death row, Gary Ray Bowles was executed by lethal injection.

On the night of December 19, 1979, 18-year-old Michelle Martinko drove to Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to buy a new winter coat.

She never made it home.

Early the next morning, Michelle was found inside her family’s Buick in the mall parking lot. She had been stabbed repeatedly in the face, neck, and chest in a vicious attack that left investigators with plenty of questions—but no killer.

For nearly four decades, the murder haunted Cedar Rapids.

Police interviewed suspects, followed tips, and eventually developed a male DNA profile from blood evidence recovered from Michelle’s clothing. But the sample produced no match in traditional law-enforcement databases, and the case remained cold.

Then investigative genetic genealogy changed everything.

In 2018, investigators uploaded DNA information from the crime scene to GEDmatch, where genealogists located distant relatives of the unknown killer. Building family trees eventually narrowed the possibilities to three brothers from Iowa.

Police began following one of them: Jerry Lynn Burns.

When Burns stopped for something to drink, an investigator retrieved the discarded straw he left behind. DNA recovered from that straw matched the male DNA from Michelle’s murder scene.

On December 19, 2018—exactly 39 years after Michelle was killed—Jerry Burns was arrested and charged with her murder. In February 2020, a jury found Burns guilty of first-degree murder after only a few hours of deliberation. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His conviction has survived subsequent appeals, including an unsuccessful Iowa Supreme Court challenge.

This is the true crime story of Michelle Martinko—an 18-year-old murdered outside a shopping mall, a cold case that endured for 39 years, and a discarded drinking straw that finally gave investigators the DNA they needed to identify her killer.

In October 2002, the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area was gripped by a terrifying question:

Who would be next?

People were being shot while pumping gas, walking through parking lots, mowing lawns, and simply going about their daily lives. The attacks appeared random, the victims seemed unconnected, and the killer could strike almost anywhere.

Behind the shootings were John Allen Muhammad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo, who used a modified blue Chevrolet Caprice as a mobile sniper’s nest. A hole cut into the trunk allowed them to fire a high-powered Bushmaster rifle while remaining concealed inside the car.

Between October 2 and October 24, 2002, the pair killed 10 people and seriously wounded three others in the Washington-area sniper attacks. Their victims were chosen in public places across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., creating widespread panic throughout the region. Schools locked their doors, sporting events were canceled or moved indoors, and people began zigzagging across parking lots or crouching beside their cars while pumping gas.

Then investigators received messages from the killers themselves.

One communication demanded $10 million and threatened additional killings. As police followed clues scattered across multiple crime scenes, attention eventually shifted toward Muhammad, Malvo, and their dark blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice.

In the early morning hours of October 24, police found the two men sleeping inside that car at a rest area near Myersville, Maryland.

Inside was the rifle used in the attacks.

The nightmare was finally over.

Investigators later connected Muhammad and Malvo to additional shootings outside the D.C. area committed before the October rampage, revealing that their violence stretched farther than anyone initially realized.

Muhammad was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. Virginia executed him by lethal injection on November 10, 2009. Malvo received multiple life sentences; because he was a juvenile when the crimes occurred, later changes in juvenile sentencing law made him eligible to seek parole in Virginia, though parole has been denied.

In the summer of 1929, Margaret Lawrence was one of the best-known actresses on the American stage—a Broadway star, socialite, and widow whose life appeared filled with glamour and success.

Then, on June 9, she was found shot to death inside her New York City apartment.

Beside her was fellow actor Louis Bennison, a stage and silent-film performer who had built his career playing rugged Western heroes. Bennison was also dead from a gunshot wound. Authorities concluded that Bennison had murdered Margaret before turning the gun on himself.

The two had been romantically involved, and contemporary accounts described the deaths as the violent end of a troubled relationship. Lawrence’s husband, actor Wallace Eddinger, had died only months earlier, leaving her widowed shortly before the tragedy.

The crime made national headlines.

Two recognizable stars of the stage were dead inside a Manhattan apartment, and the very man known for playing heroic cowboys had become the killer at the center of a real-life tragedy.

Margaret Lawrence was only 39 years old.
