May 26, 1990, Wellington, Florida. A doorbell rings, and wife and mother opens the front door to find a clown with an orange wig, white face, red nose and gloves, holding flowers and balloons. What she believed was a delivery and gesture of kindness, wasn’t. It was an ambush and a point-blank gunshot to her head. After firing, the clown turned and calmly walked away to a waiting car. In 2008, a mother and her little girl rode an elevator to the 11th floor of a building in Yuanlin, Taiwan—left two red coats and their shoes—and stepped into a stairwell. They were never seen again. This is the cold case of Liu Huijun (劉惠君) and her daughter—often called the “Taiwanese Elisa Lam,” but stranger.

On a cold morning in 1987, Sarah L. Saganitso was found behind Flagstaff Medical Center — her body arranged in a way that made investigators pause. The scene didn't look like any murder they'd worked before. And that discomfort, that hesitation, would become the foundation of one of the most unusual criminal defenses in American legal history.

George Abney was charged with her murder. What followed was a trial that forced a courtroom in northern Arizona to grapple with questions no law school curriculum had prepared anyone to answer: Where does evidence end and belief begin? What happens when a defense attorney weaponizes cultural tradition to build reasonable doubt? And what is justice owed to a Diné woman when the system tasked with protecting her becomes a stage for something else entirely?

The defense called it a Skinwalker — a figure from Navajo spiritual tradition, a shape-shifting witch capable of dark and violent acts. They pointed to the odd details at the scene and asked the jury to consider another explanation. Not George Abney. Something else. Something ancient.

The jury acquitted.

Between 1972 and 1985, Marybeth Tinning buried nine children in Schenectady, New York. Doctors called the deaths SIDS. Neighbors called it tragedy. But investigators eventually called it what it was — murder.

In this episode of Hitched 2 Homicide, we trace the full, devastating timeline of the Tinning family: how nine children died one by one, how Marybeth shifted between confessions and denials, and how her husband Joe stood loyally by her side through all of it. We examine the role doctors, investigators, and forensic pathologists played in finally connecting the dots — and why it took so long.

We also take a deep dive into Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome (now known as Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another) — the psychological framework many experts believe explains why a mother would harm the very children she was trusted to protect. Marybeth finally confessed to smothering her 4-month-old daughter Tami Lynne and was convicted of second-degree murder in 1987. She was paroled in 2018 after more than 30 years behind bars — but the questions this case raises about motherhood, trust, and how evil can hide in plain sight have never gone away.
