On January 17, 2001, Alex Algeri walked out of a fitness club in Amityville, New York — and never made it to his car. He was shot multiple times in the parking lot, leaving behind a community in shock and investigators with almost nothing to work with. Al had no enemies. No debts. No criminal history. By every account, he was exactly who he appeared to be: a good man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Except the place wasn't wrong. The man was.

Al Algeri was never the target. His business partner Paul Riedel was — and the woman behind the plot was Paul's own wife, Lee Ann Riedel, who had enlisted her lover, Ralph "Rocco" Salierno, to make sure her husband never came home. What they got instead was an innocent man's blood on a parking lot in Long Island, and a murder-for-hire conspiracy that began to unravel almost immediately.

In Part Two of The Scarsdale Diet Murder, we pick up where the gunshots left off. Dr. Herman Tarnower—the cardiologist behind The Scarsdale Diet—was dead, and his longtime lover Jean Harris was in handcuffs. But the real battle had just begun.

What followed was a 14-week media-frenzied trial, filled with courtroom theatrics, handwritten, ten page love letters, prescription drugs, and a defense that teetered between suicide attempt and emotional collapse. Prosecutors painted Jean as a jealous, calculating killer. The defense claimed she was a broken woman, unraveling under years of psychological manipulation and amphetamines prescribed by the man she ultimately shot.

The jury didn’t buy it.

Jean Harris was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life. She would go on to serve 12 years behind bars before then-New York Governor Mario Cuomo commuted her sentence at age 69.

On July 18, 2003, four young people were found shot to death inside a home in Clear Lake, Texas—a quiet Houston suburb shaken by a crime that looked, at first, like a mystery with no clear motive and no easy answers.

The victims were Tiffany Rowell, Rachael Koloroutis, Marcus Precella, and Adelbert Sanchez. For three years, the Clear Lake murders remained unsolved as investigators chased thousands of leads. Then a tip pointed police toward a shocking suspect: Christine Paolilla, a former classmate once voted “Miss Irresistible,” and her boyfriend, Christopher Snider.

What followed was a disturbing story of friendship, jealousy, drugs, betrayal, and a confession that would finally bring the truth into the light. In 2008, Christine Paolilla was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison for her role in the deaths.
