  • Ep 146: Las Vegas and its relationship with sports

Over the past half a decade or so, Las Vegas has witnessed a heavy influx of sports events and establishments.

Plenty of big sporting events have taken place in Vegas in the past from boxing bouts to MMA fights, golf, NASCAR etc. The city has several minor league teams too but no major sports team moved to Vegas until the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights were established in 2017.

WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces were next in 2018 after they moved to the city from San Antonio, then came the NFL’s Raiders from Oakland in 2020.

Last week, MLB’s 30 owners unanimously approved the move of the Oakland Athletics to the site of Tropicana Las Vegas, which will be completed by 2028 at the latest.

Not only that, but major sporting events are now taking place in the city. The Formula One Championship took over the city last weekend for the Vegas Grand Prix, and the Super Bowl will be in Vegas at Allegiant Stadium in February next year.

With Vegas essentially becoming one of the largest sports markets in the US, what kind of relationship is there between casinos in the city and sports?

This will be the topic of today's episode of iGaming Daily, sponsored by SBC Summit Rio, where Conor Porter is joined by his new Editor on CasinoBeats, Joe Streeter and ex-Las Vegas resident and SBC Americas Editor, Jessica Welman.

  • Ep 145: UK gambling's white paper regulatory agenda moves to 2024

As announced by Policy and Public Affairs Director, Tim Miller the Gambling Commission, will undertake a further seven consultations to progress its regulatory review of the recommendations made by UK Gambling’s White Paper.

Booked for a 12-week period, the UKGC’s plans to close its next series of consultations by February-to-March of 2024.

For UK gambling a fractious 2023 ends with no regulatory resolution as, despite consultations, the industry remains in the dark regarding its future terms of play.

As eyes turn to 2024, how will UK stakeholders respond to the consultations on “Responsible incentives, customer-led tools, RET contributions, data reporting, financial penalties, and financial key event reporting”.

This will be the conversations for today's episode of the iGaming Daily podcast, sponsored by SBC Summit Rio, where Martyn Elliott is joined by Edward Menmuir and Ted Orme-Claye to discuss the latest developments.

  • Ep 144: The finer Points of responsible gaming in Canada

A rare jaunt north of the border for Jess and Charlie on today's iGaming Daily, as attention turns towards Canada. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has fined two operators for negligence in complying with responsible gambling policies, with PointsBet Canada's recent fine following Apollo Entertainment's in August.

  • Ep 143: Is there a defence for gambling sponsorships?

Once again, football's relationship with betting is in the spotlight, after EFL Chairman Rick Parry took a seemingly unique stance among high-profile figures in the game, stating that EFL research reveals that there isn’t any evidence that ‘sponsorship leads to an increase in gambling or gambling harm’.

With this being one of the strongest public comments in support of betting sponsorships and advertisements, how valid a defence is the importance of the financial support the industry provides? To what end does the investment by Flutter, EFL sponsor Sky Bet's parent company, going to research and education, counteract the much publicised potential negatives around betting sponsors?

To discuss this, Insider Sport's Callum Williams hosts a special iGaming Daily episode, joined by Insider Sport editor and author of the IS story on the topic at hand, as well as SBC Sponsorship Director George Harborne.

  • Ep 142: The Romário Report - Advertising & Sponsorships in Brazil

The sports commission in Brazil approved a report from Senator Romário, former Barcelona and PSV forward and 1994 World Cup Winner, which includes longer times for licenses and interestingly, an amendment that bans advertising and sponsorships. Amidst a pushback from pro clubs, Goiás Senator Jorge Kajuru, himself a Sports Broadcaster, has guaranteed there will be no such restrictions.

To make sense of this, SBC Noticias' Fernando Noodt makes his hosting debut after many appearances on the other side of the desk, and is joined by our resident Brazil expert, Isadora Marcante of SBC Notícias Brasil. Isa takes us through the report, the reaction to the advertising restrictions, what happens next and the likely timeline of this moving forward.
