Det. Richard Shelby was the first Sacramento detective to make a connection between a series of rapes that began in communities in East Sacramento. Law enforcement failed to stop him before he transformed in to a Southern California serial killer, committing  some 53 rapes and 12 homicides from 1976-1986.

After Shelby's retirement, 20 years after the case had gone cold, he was contacted by his old employer,  the Sacramento Sheriff's Derpartment. They had learned , through DNA analysis, that the East Area Rapist EAR and The Original Nightstalker ONS were the same person. And, they were re-opening the investigation. Retired West Coast Chief of Special Invesigation for the federal government, Russ Oase contacted Shelby and asked him to write down everything he recalled. Shelby was once again involved in the active investigation, his notes morphing into his instrumental book Hunting A Psychopath:The EAR/ONS Investigation-The Original Investigator Speaks Out, published in 2014.

In 2016 the FB! re-entered the investigation, utilizing advances in DNA technology, offering a 50,000 reward and asking for the public's help in capturing the serial killer.

Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested April 25th, 2018 after a DNA match. DET. RICHARD SHELBY: The Hunt For The Psychopath is Over-Golden State Killer, EAR/ONS Captured!

Absolute Madness tells the disturbing true story of Joseph Christopher, a white serial killer who targeted black males and struck fear into the residents of Buffalo and New York City in the 1980s. Dubbed both the .22-Caliber Killer and the Midtown Slasher, Christopher allegedly claimed eighteen victims during a savage four-month spree across the state.

The investigation, aided by famed FBI profiler John Douglas, drew national attention and biting criticism from Jesse Jackson and other civil rights leaders. The killer, when at last he was unmasked, seemed an unlikely candidate to have held New York in a grip of terror.

His capture was neither the end of the story nor the end of the racial strife, which flared anew during circuitous prosecutions and judicial rulings that prompted cries of a double standard in the justice system. Both a wrenching true crime story and an incisive portrait of dangerously discordant race relations in America, Absolute Madness also chronicles a lonely, vulnerable man’s tragic descent into madness and the failure of the American mental health system that refused his pleas for help. • Stolen Identity?Joseph Newton Chandler of Eastlake was not who he claimed to be. Some think he was the Zodiac killer; others say he was D.B. Cooper, or even Jim Morrison.

• Suicide or murder??Joseph Kupchik hid gambling problems from friends and family until he was found at the bottom of a nine-story parking deck in downtown Cleveland?with multiple stab wounds.

• Heist? In 1969, Lakewood bank employee Ted Conrad nabbed $215,000 from the vault one day after his twentieth birthday. The FBI still shows up at his high school reunions.

• Controversy?Jeffrey Krotine was thrice tried for the grisly 2003 murder of his wife and ultimately acquitted, to the frustration of Cuyahoga County prosecutors, detectives, and even jurors.

These stories venture into dark alleys and seedy strip clubs, as well as comfortable suburbs and cozy small towns, where some of the region’s most horrendous crimes have occurred. THE SERIAL KILLER'S APPRENTICE: And Other True Stories of Cleveland's Most Intriguing Unsolved Crimes-James Renner

On February 5th, 2007 Charity Lee Bennett was working her shift at Buffalo Wild Wings in Abilene Texas when two police officers came to inform her that her 4 year-old daughter Ella was dead and her 13 year-old son Paris had killed her. He had convinced the babysitter she could go home and afterwards entered the room of his sister. She was beaten and strangled and stabbed 17 times. Paris first called his school friend and then 8 minutes later called 911.

On March 20th, 2018 FilmRise released the chilling documentary The Family I Had, which recounts the tragic and unimaginable story of Charity Lee Bennett and how a family struggles to move forward. Part true-crime, part mystery— Charity Lee, mother of both the victim and killer , relives her agony and her journey of love 10 years later in this feature documentary that also presents multiple and conflicting accounts leaving the audience questioning where the ultimate truth and accountability lie. THE FAMILY I HAD: An Engrossing Look At An Unthinkable Crime--Katie Green

The year was 1965. The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and The Righteous Brothers filled the airwaves. Television shows like "The Adventures of Ozzy and Harriett" and "The Andy Griffith Show" mirrored the innocence of life in the dusty city of Tucson, Az. But the sunbaked desert surrounding Tucson was hiding a sinister secret. A psychopath names Charles Schmid, later nicknamed the "Pied Piper of Tucson" by Life Magazine, would steal that innocence away, along with the lives of three beautiful teenage girls.

In this firsthand account written in 1967, Richard Bruns shares the evolution of his friendship with Schmid, the details of getting involved way in over his head, and how he finally summoned the courage to blow the whistle to end the deadly rampage that shocked the nation and changed the city of Tucson forever.
