It’s All About Human Connection with Dr. Jody Carrington

Listen Later

Dr. Jody Carrington speaks her truth and calls it like she sees it, which benefits the many she has helped in her career as a clinical psychologist, speaker, and author. The most glaring issue she saw affecting the children and families she has worked with both in her private practice and at the Alberta’s Children's Hospital was disconnection, isolation and a feeling of loneliness. In today’s technology focused world, it’s easy to lose sight of the power that actual human connection has on our happiness and health, and Jody is here to bring about a reconnection revolution one interaction at a time. Jody also talks about the energy that comes with finding your purpose, how we can begin to bring more connection into our life, and more about her book, Kids These Days.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Jody is lighting the world on fire with her passion for others finding their purpose and connecting with their own self to bring themselves truly and fully to the world. Purpose is why you are on this planet, and what gets you out of bed in the morning. We remember people’s presence and affect on our growth more than the words they say. All the great leaders and figures in the world made their impact by deeply connecting with others. Proximity is what we need in times of distress to remind us that we matter. Jody and her siblings found out they had a biological sister, years into their adulthood. They are very grateful to know her now and to have her join the family. While working at the Alberta’s Children’s Hospital, Jody saw that a lack of connection and close relationships had a profound impact on the trauma of children. Jody is passionate about working those that are close with children every day to help them understand that their presence really makes a difference. This includes everyone from administrators, educators, bus drivers, etc. The only way we learn emotional regulation skills is face to face with another human being. It is a conscious effort to connect, and to do so we must slow down and detach ourselves from looking at a screen 24/7. Jody wrote the outline of Kids These Days on a napkin while on an airplane, and now it serves as an important guide for both educators on families on how to garner connection. Disconnect can happen to anyone, despite age or economic status. It also happens quite often in times of grief, which is where we really need connection the most. Jody and her team take great joy in their “Reconnection Revolution”. They leave kind notes, pay it forward for others and love seeing the reaction of those that it reaches. You are wired to do hard things, and one of those is to truly connect with others. You can only get through hard things when you show up.
