My guest today is Brenda Zane, and we are digging deep into teen substance abuse.
Brenda shares about her son’s drug misuse & what got her started in this work. We talk about teens who are exploring risky behavior and teens who are using drugs regularly/daily. Brenda shares tips for having uncomfortable (and ongoing) conversations about drug use with your adolescent and how to come from a place of curiosity (not judgment). We talk about why the confrontational, punitive approach does not work & to consider drug use as a solution for a problem you don’t know about. Brenda and I also dig into how to share information about drugs with your kids & how to stay calm when you’re freaked out. Brenda finishes up teaching me about fentanyl & when overdoses don’t look like what you’d expect.

My guest this week is Nancy Albright, a friend and fellow Positive Discipline Parent Educator.
Nancy and I go way back, and I’m thrilled to chat with her today about deepening our curiosity with our teens. She tells me about her new book, “My Teen and me: 20 meaningful questions to ease your frustration, build trust, communicate, and connect with your teen.” We talk about how to stay curious with love & presence, and how to pull back on your fear & worries. We cover the importance of pausing & explicitly asking your teen what they need - advice, help problem solving, or just someone to listen, as well as what to do when you’re met with irritation or withdrawal. We wrap up touching on giving yourself love, compassion, & grace in your parenting and the power of presence.

My guest today is Sabrina Shaheen Cronin, and we’re digging deep into co-parenting teens.
Sabrina shares her wisdom and expertise on all-things related to divorce, custody, co-parenting, & step families. We get into the legalities of co-parenting & custody agreements and how to move forward while keeping the well-being of your child(ren) at the forefront. Sabrina and I talk about looking at divorce as an opportunity for personal growth (which can be so hard) and how co-parenting is not a one-size-fits-all thing. We discuss how to navigate your teens preferences and rights when it comes to custody, and I ask Sabrina for tips on getting on the same page with an ex partner.

Dr. Dana Dorfman is here today, and we’re talking all about parental anxiety. We talk on how it’s ingrained in us that education, achievement, and productivity are so important, which makes us anxious parents. We talk about how adolescents are dealing with a lot of stuff we didn’t - active shooter drills, the pandemic, constant social media & news. The pressure on our teens is real and accelerated, but there’s also some hope & inspiration there. Dr. Dorfman shares about her 8 parent anxiety reaction types and how we can use that info to do better.
