  • JFD324: Doctor Cyclops, The Naked City, The Red Shoes
Well, all that money spent on night school remedial math has paid off, because we've counted our way all the way to the 1940's. This week we cover three Atomic Age flicks in our latest, and some say greatest, iteration of the #JFDecades project. And we're joined by Sebastian Bendix (of Friday Night Frights / Cinefamily) for all of it! First up! Honey, they've shrunk the scientists. It's Doctor Cyclops, the 1940 technicolor sci-fi feature in which a Peruvian mad scientist with poor vision shrinks down a team of meddling American scientists so he can take a nice long nap. It's got a prickly-pear cactus-smashing that has to be seen to be believed. Next! They say there are 8 million stories in the naked city, but we're only reviewing one of them this week: specifically, The Naked City (1948)! The genesis for a late 50's TV series, this New York film noir blends elements of documentary film making and traditional crime action. Finally! Continuing Junk Food Dinner's long tradition of covering all the Criterion-level classics, we tiptoe into the world of British ballet with The Red Shoes (1948). A tragic tale of love, loss, and dance, this film fits squarely into JFD's typical canon. It's classy. All this plus witty banter between friends, An Ernest Dickerson update, Stranger Things and retro-pandering, Dan Harmon versus indifference, out of the woods and into the witch, Jared Leto presents San Diego Comic-Con International, Bronson's Loose in Tahoe, California Nerd News & Blu-ray Picks, continued lack of overt police involvement, sneezes, belches, gleeks and a whole lot more! • JFD323: Freaks, Scarface, King Kong
Say there, gents and dames! Do you like adventure, excitement and drama? Do you like gangsters, apes and freaks?! Well, JFD's got something for you this week, on our 10-week long trip through the decades as we venture into the 1930's. Up first, a trapeze artist pretends to be in love with a little person while performing in a traveling circus. But when she and her true lover, a strong man, are exposed, every freak in the sideshow teams up to get revenge in Tod Browning's Freaks from 1932. Then, in Prohibition-era Chicago, an ambitious but ill tempered gangster (Paul Muni) tries to exert his power and control over the booze runnin' bid-ness and try to suppress weird feelings about his sister in 1932's Scarface directed by Howard Hawks. And finally, an ambitious filmmaker takes his crew and a young actress into the jungle to find Skull Island. But when they stumble upon a tribe of natives who worship a giant ape,  the make a plan to bring the beast back to the US and make a fortune, but as I'm sure you already know, things don't go exactly as planned in King Kong from 1933. All this plus witty banter between friends, Parker in vacation mode, gross mouth puss stories, Sean's complete dental history, unintelligable Linklater reviews, rants against masculinity from the director of Predator, Nerd News and blu-ray picks, continued lack of police involvement and a whole lot more! • JFD322: Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages, Go West, Man with a Movie Camera
Put on your tuxedo and top-hat, because we're going to the motion picture house! It's the first week of our multi-month #JFDecades project, where we unravel the entire history of cult films, one decade at a time. This week, we explore the weird world of the roaring 1920's! First up! We delve into the grand-daddy of all Witchcraft flicks, a supremely Satanic seven-part silent Swedish shocker, the surprisingly transgressive/educational/strange Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages from 1922! This pseudo-documentary traces the activities of witches from the middle ages through the present, and features a real Haystacks Calhoun of a Lucifer, played by the director (Benjamin Christensen) himself. Up next! We ride the rails all the way back to the old west, a west so old it's got monkeys instead of people. We meet the original college party animal, a little monkey dude who rides a goat. It's the Hal Roach short comedy Go West, starring the world-famed monkey troupe "The Dippy Doo Dads". Finally! A 1929 soviet manifesto on the international language of cinema as expressed through verite shots of daily tasks being performed in anonymous Russian cities surely sounds exciting, but what if we told you this proto-non-verbal film features no characters, no dialogue, no subtitles, intertitles, plot or narration? You'd probably say we're talking about The Man with the Movie Camera, and you'd be absolutely right. All this plus witty banter between friends, Kevin doesn't mind the hotness, Pokemon versus Racism, The Warriors as NeverNudes, Rockabillies love Bettie Page, A History of Nudity in the United States, it was one of those Londons, things a lot of people have and haven't seen, projecting movies behind bands, Nerd News & DVD Picks, continued lack of overt police involvement, sneezes, belches, gleeks and a whole lot more! • JFD321: Baron Prasil, It's a Bikini World, Captain America: The First Avenger
Hey, Junkies! We're back with chili dogs and the Declaration of Independence to celebrate! First up, a fancy man and his astronaut friend go on thrilling adventures in 1961's "Baron Prasil," aka "The Fabulous Baron Munchhausen." The tales go from 18th Century Turkey to battles with sea monsters to wars in this yarn that influenced Terry Gilliam. Next, In "It's a Bikini World," a hunky dude pretends to be his non-existent, intellectual brother to win the heart of a liberated '60s woman. Sid Haig and The Animals co-star in this feel-good romp. Finally, Steve Rogers undergoes a scientific transformation to become a super soldier in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avengers." For the last 3 years, we've been doing the bad Cap movies. How will Sean and Kevin react to the first one made by talented people with actual money? All this plus Nerd News, DVDs, Memphis Maniacs, New Orleans Chat, No one will take Parker's Money, Tough Cops and so much more! • JFD320: Weekend at Bernie's, Computer Beach Party, Summer School
Welcome, Junkies! The Ghoul Days of Summer are behind us and we look forward to the Cool Days of Summer! First up, two losers get invited to a company meeting in the Hamptons only to discover that their boss has been murdered in "Weekend at Bernie's" from 1989. Oh, also, they pretend the dead body is still alive so they can hang out in his swanky beach-front home and party with beach babes. Next, a group of computer-loving party nerds may get their beach taken by a business man. And it may or may not involve buried treasure in 1987's "Computer Beach Party." It does, however, involve line dancing. Finally, a teacher has to guide a crew of misfits through English class in "Summer School" from 1987. This HBO staple has a rad supporting cast featuring Shawnee Smith, Dean Cameron, Kelly Jo Minter and Kirstie Alley. All this plus Nerd News, DVDs, Junk Mails, Sweetman, an homage to Banshee Jams' "Food Court" called "Snacks Talk," Godzilla chat, Kevin and Sean saw a bunch of new movies and so much more! • JFD319: Eugenie, Salò or the 120 Days of Sodom, Marquis
The heat is sweltering, the movies are tortoruous, and there's a foul smell in the air. It could only mean one thing - we're closing out Ghoul Summer 2016 with our Marquis de Sade theme show. But will we survive? It's true what they say: All Ghoul Things Must Pass (gas). First up! We cover Jess Franco's adaptation of the Marquis' story Philosophy in the Bedroom, but not the adaptation you're thinking. It's 1970's Eugenie, a stylish low-budget ghoul affair starring Marie Liljedahl and Christopher Lee, regarding the corruption of a young Spanish babe by a creepy old dude and his lady friend. Up next! If you know anything about ghoul movies, you've heard of 1975's Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom. But as it's one of the most banned films worldwide, we won't blame you if you haven't actually seen it yet. Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini transports the Marquis' story to WWII era Italy, where the ruling elite impose heinous sexual torture on a group of young slaves. It's as grim as it sounds. Finally! If you ever wanted to see a French Pound Puppie with a stop-motion wiener named Collin have sex with an animated jail cell wall, 1989's Marquis is the film for you. Monarchical genealogy and anal rape feature prominently. All this plus witty banter between friends, Feeling the Ghoul Burn, the part where Parker looks up to the Marquis de Sade, Reactionary Rapeman Review Reactions, “you know how Mark is”, Skype is a demon feeding on audio ghoulishness, that William Castle kinda hustle, analog nonsense, normal ass balloon nostalgia, Seth Ghoulzer, nipple tortures, famous penis actors, Sad Ghoul News & DVD Picks, continued lack of overt police involvement, sneezes, belches, gleeks and a whole lot more! • JFD318: The Rapeman, Splatter: Naked Blood, Ex Drummer
It's hot, it's sticky, it's gross. That can mean only one thing; Ghoul Summer is here! That's right; spend a humid, sweltering couple of hours with Kevin, Parker, Sean and our special guest host, the grand marshall of Ghoul Summer, Mike Dikk from Kissing Contest and get despicable with a trio of uncomfortable flicks. Up first, a Japanese anime about an avenger for hire who rights the wrongs of the world with forced sex in The Rapeman from 1993. Is this ultimate taboo cartoon just subversive satire or a heinous portrayal of vulgar ideals? You decide. Next, a young man discovers a revolutionary new pain killer, but when he secretly tests it on three young women, he quickly realizes that turning pain into pleasure has some ghoulish downsides in Splatter: Naked Blood from 1996. This Japanese horror film has some of the most nauseating gore scenes in Ghoul Summer history! And finally, a group of Flemish losers with handicaps recruit a hip writer to round out their punk band and bare witness to their depraved lifestyles in Ex Drummer from 2007. Is this film gross enough to truly be considered a "ghoul movie" or is it just an grimy Trainspotting rip-off? All this plus witty banter between ghouls, touching Junk Mail, Sean incorrectly claiming ALF was the first alien sitcom, news about dead midgets, ghoul wrestling, serious debates on whether rape is fair fodder for humor, Mike getting queasy while eating a donut, audio issues from New York, the mystery of Mark Freado's ghost and so much more! • JFD317: Hard to Die, Cannibal Mercenary, Shredder Orpheus
Hey, Junkies! The temperatures keep rising in the JFD studios as we get closer to Ghoul Summer. Or wade through it, as the case may be this week. First, a group of sexy temp workers set an ancient evil free while burning the midnight oil in Jim Wynorski's "Hard to Die" from 1990. If this movie seems familiar, it's because it's a remake/sequel to "Sorority House Massacre 2" and it's also somehow "Slumber Party Massacre 6." Next, a group of soldiers in Vietnam fight snakes, get their genitals punished and get peed all over in "Cannibal Mercenary" from 1983. Finally, a skateboarder travels to Hell in 1990's "Shredder Orpheus" - a movie that combines industrial aesthetics and Greek tragedy. All this, plus Nerd News, DVDs, the saddest nerd news, basketball shorts, sticking it to the man, Beyond the Gates Chat, has Sean even seen TMNT2?, Zatoichi: The Blind Podsmen, Donald Lloyd, new T-shirts and so much more! • JFD316: Green Room, The Sinful Dwarf, Thundercrack!
Oooh, what's that smell? Can't you smell that smell? The smell of Ghoul Summer surrounds you, yeah, as our three picks this week edge right up against the definition of Ghouldom. It's an accidental prelude to this summer's ghoulish festivities, and one you'll never forget. First up! It's Jeremy Saulnier's follow up to 2014's Blue Ruin (one of our collective favorites of that year), Green Room from this year! Basically "Nazi Punks Fuck Off: The Movie", this thriller pits a plucky young group of punk rockers against an army of neo-nazi punks lead by Patrick Stewart. It's wild! Up next! If a movie stars a dwarf who can't stop sinning - it could only be 1973's The Sinful Dwarf! It's one of those Danish (not Swedish) Porno Slashers we all know and love, starring Torben the Dwarf as an incestous, sex-torturing pimp who seizes, drugs, and converts young women into prostitutes in his filth-ridden home. Blame Ricky! Finally! We deliver on a long-held promise to a very special listener. Nobody will ever say we didn't review Thundercrack! from 1975, because this is our review of it. It is contained within this episode of the show. All this plus witty banter between friends, Korean dick-shaped pastries, Logan’s Run Night Clubs, making our voicemail line bling, It’s Wayne, Kevin’s frustration about gorilla violence, Junkies Down Under, Sweetman's Leatherman Gimps, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling Chats, perplexing quiet background laughter, Parker's usage of the definite article, Nerd News & DVD Picks, continued lack of overt police involvement, sneezes, belches, gleeks and a whole lot more! • JFD315: Intrépidos Punks, The Gate, Dollman
Sean's out in Korea this week, so Kevin and Parker are joined by Jackson Stewart, director of the brand new horror film Beyond the Gates! We talk to Jackson about the flick which stars Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, You’re Next), Graham Skipper (Almost Human), Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End, The Guest) and Brea Grant (Halloween 2) in which two estranged brothers reunite seven months after their father’s disappearance to liquidate his anemic video store. While there, they unearth an old VCR board game that acts as an inter-dimensional hub to a nightmare world where their father’s soul is trapped and can only be saved by playing the game. We also get a voicemail from one of the stars of the film (hint: she's a goddamn legend)! Then we settle in to look at three pretty insane flicks; Up first, a gang of motorcycle riding, drug taking, bank robbing Mexican punks try to evade the law while scoring more dope, money and weapons in Intrépidos Punks from 1983. The film stars lucha libre legend El Fantasma as the leader of the gang, Tarzan and features the best theme song you'll ever heard repeated 25 times in a movie! Next, a young boy (Stephen Dorff) and his heavy metal loving friend, open a gate to Hell and unleash a bunch of weird vibes and even weirder mini monsters in 1987's The Gate. And finally, Tim Thomerson plays a hard boiled space cop who crash lands on Earth while in pursuit of an evil villain who's just a head. The only problem is, on Earth, he's only a foot tall. Now he has to content with giant humans, the evil space head and a gang leader played by Jackie Earle Haley in Dollman from 1991. All this plus witty banter between friends, tons of Junk Mail, VHS board game chat, Green Room previews, the lost art of the supernatural erotic thriller, Stewart Gordon talk, punk rock songs, continued lack of police involvement and a whole lot more! LISTEN NOW: MP3 Direct Donloyd Got a movie suggestion for the show, want to give your opinion on a movie we talked about or just want to tell us we suck? Drop us a line [email protected].
