Temple Welcomes Pets at Lantern Festival

Lantern Festival (元宵節) was so much fun this year!

I went to Kaohsiung and saw a huge light display (燈會各式各樣的作品).

Everyone there was wearing tiger tails… pretty funny, right?

The organizers of the festival were selling fake tiger tails (假的老虎尾巴), and they became pretty popular.

What did you do for Lantern Festival this year?

I went to Pingxi and set off a paper sky lantern.

I made wishes for happiness and good fortune (幸福) in the New Year.

Lots of people go to temples during Lantern Festival to receive blessings from the gods (祈福).

But one temple in New Taipei City did something a little different this year…

It welcomed in pets to be blessed and adopted (收養).

Jieyun Temple in New Taipei's Banqiao District held a pet adoption event to try to find some animals a nice new home.

It was organized by the Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office, which helps stray animals and helps pets get vaccinations.

這個寵物領養活動活動是由新北動物保護防疫區舉辦，這個組織不但幫助流浪動物，也鼓勵寵物接種疫苗。

People brought their cats, dogs and rabbits to Jieyun Temple to get chips (微晶片), so they can know where their pet is if it gets lost.

Also, four dogs and three cats were adopted at the event. Hooray!

New Taipei City government has been thinking of innovative ways to make life better for animals.

新北市政府一直在找有創意的方法讓動物過得更好。

I'm happy that some found a new home during this year's Lantern Festival.

Company Makes Potato Perfume

Fruit… flowers… wood and spices.

These are smells that you usually think of when you think of perfume (香水).

But how about potatoes?

A company in the U.S. state of Idaho has made a perfume using potatoes.

And the perfume is called Frites by Idaho.

Frites is the French word for fries.

And get this… the perfume actually smells like French fries!

And it's made with potatoes, too.

Would you like to walk around smelling like French fries all day?

Well apparently, a lot of people would, because the Idaho Potato Commission put the product on its website…

…and it sold out very quickly!

美國公司Idaho Potato Commission做出薯條味的香水，產品一上市就賣光了!

It's a limited edition product (限量版) - that means the company will only sell it for a small amount of time.

But it is very cheap. The price on the website was one dollar 89 cents… about the price of a large order of French fries!

People who want it can still win a bottle through competitions on social media (社交媒體).

According to the Idaho Potato Commission, it decided to make the perfume after workers there saw a poll (調查) that found 90 percent of Americans "find the smell of French fries irresistible".

公司的研究員發現一項調查結果說九成的美國人無法抵抗薯條的香味。

The Idaho Potato Commission president said their smell is "too good to resist".

I do think French fries are irresistible… but I wouldn't want to smell like them all day!

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. Signs for Manchester United Youth

Like father, like son.

That's a famous phrase.

And it has proved true for the son of world-famous soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo.

His son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. has just been signed by the British soccer club Manchester United.

足球運動員羅納度的兒子和英國的曼聯清訓簽下合約。

He is only 11 years old, so he will play for the club's junior team (少年隊).

But he will be wearing their number 7 shirt.

That's the same number his dad wears when he plays for Manchester United.

Cristiano Ronaldo has played over 210 games and scored over 90 goals for Manchester United in England's top soccer league, the Premier League, since he started there in 2003.

So Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. has some big football boots to fill!
