Jody Winter, founder and CEO of Lloyd Winter PC, discusses his firm's transition from hourly billing to a flat monthly billing model for civil litigation cases. Jody explains that this change, implemented in 2019, was driven by a desire to provide access to justice for clients with smaller cases who were previously priced out of legal services. He describes how the firm uses a tiered pricing structure based on the amount in controversy, allowing them to profitably handle cases across different scales.
Jody highlights the benefits of the flat monthly billing model for both clients and the firm. Clients appreciate the predictability of costs and the ability to make informed business decisions about their cases. For the firm, this model incentivizes efficiency, allows for the adoption of new technologies like AI, and has led to a significant increase in caseload and profitability. Jody notes that their collection rate has improved to 96.4% and that they've been able to take on 40% more cases, particularly in the civil litigation category.
Jody emphasizes the importance of understanding cost structures and profitability when implementing this model. He shares insights on how they manage client deposits, automate processes, and leverage technology to improve efficiency. Jody also touches on the ethical and faith-based motivations behind his firm's approach, expressing a desire to serve clients with meritorious cases regardless of the amount in controversy. He encourages other lawyers to consider similar models to expand access to justice and improve their practices.

Tom Martin, founder of LawDroid, discusses the evolution of legal technology and the impact of AI on the legal profession. Tom shares his journey from practicing law to becoming a legaltech entrepreneur, highlighting how he created tools to help lawyers work more efficiently. He explains that LawDroid, initially focused on document automation and chatbots, has now expanded to include AI-powered features like LawDroid Copilot, which assists lawyers with legal research, document analysis, and various other tasks.
Tom emphasizes the importance of making AI tools accessible and user-friendly for lawyers, particularly those in solo and small firms. He describes how LawDroid integrates with various legal practice management systems and offers features like lead capture, client intake, and knowledge base creation. Tom also addresses concerns about AI hallucinations in legal research, explaining that LawDroid uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to ensure accuracy and prevent the system from making up information.
Looking to the future, Tom predicts that the billable hour model in law firms will likely decline due to the efficiency gains provided by AI tools. He discusses the subscription-based business model of LawDroid, highlighting its benefits for both the company and its users. Tom sees the subscription model as a way to build community and provide ongoing value to lawyers as technology and laws continue to evolve. He concludes by encouraging lawyers to embrace AI and efficiency gains, viewing them as opportunities rather than threats to their practice.

Nick Hafen currently teaches legal technology education at BYU Law School, a role he transitioned into after gaining substantial experience at Kirkland & Ellis, and subsequently opening his own legal practice. His journey from practicing law in a high-pressure, BigLaw environment to focusing on the educational aspects of legal technology underscores a significant shift towards innovation in the legal field. Hafen's dual role allows him to not only teach but also continue offering legal services through his part-time, subscription-based practice.
In his teachings and practice, Hafen is deeply invested in the integration of technology within the legal profession. He actively explores and implements various legal tech tools, such as document automation, to streamline operations and enhance service delivery. His approach is rooted in the belief that technology can significantly improve efficiency and accessibility in legal services, making it possible to offer more client-friendly fee arrangements like subscriptions.
Hafen's background in a large law firm provides him with a unique perspective on the legal industry, balancing the high earning potential and prestige of BigLaw against its often demanding expectations. His current practice focuses on leveraging technology to serve small businesses and individuals, emphasizing the importance of access to justice. This shift not only highlights Hafen's commitment to legal innovation but also his dedication to making legal services more accessible and efficient through the use of technology.
