Martin Parsons, a second-career lawyer with a military background, discusses his journey into subscription-based legal services for small businesses and nonprofits in Southern Illinois. He shares his transition from traditional billing to a hybrid model that includes subscriptions, flat fees, and occasional hourly billing. Martin emphasizes the value of transparent pricing and the importance of building relationships with clients, often meeting them at their place of business. He highlights the benefits of the subscription model, including proactive legal support and the ability to prevent potential issues before they escalate.
Martin details his use of various technologies to streamline his practice, including Locusts for practice management, Calendly for scheduling, and Grammarly for writing assistance. He also discusses his approach to pricing, offering discounts to subscribers and using time-tracking tools to optimize his services. Martin shares success stories of how his subscription model has helped clients avoid potential legal pitfalls, such as preventing a discrimination lawsuit and identifying a trademark conflict.
Martin reflects on the influence of women and people of color in legal innovation, noting that much of his knowledge about subscriptions and value-based pricing comes from these sources. He also touches on his experience teaching law practice management and observes that female law students tend to be more interested in innovative practice models.

Victoria Collier, a lawyer and former law firm owner, discusses her experience selling her estate planning practice and her current role in helping other attorneys buy and sell law firms. She emphasizes the importance of subscription models in increasing a firm's value, as they provide predictable, recurring revenue. Victoria explains that when selling a law firm, having a brand name instead of a personal name, a strong team and processes, and a warm client list are crucial factors in fetching a higher price.
Victoria is now venturing into creating an Alternative Business Structure (ABS) law firm in Arizona, focusing on serving veterans with estate planning needs. She plans to leverage AI and automation to offer more affordable services through a subscription model. Victoria believes this approach will help address the untapped latent legal market by providing efficient, cost-effective legal services to those who might not otherwise be able to afford them.
Throughout the conversation, Victoria shares insights on various aspects of running a law firm, including the benefits of flat fee billing over hourly rates, the importance of tracking time for profitability and management purposes, and the use of technology to streamline operations. She also discusses the challenges and opportunities in the legal industry, emphasizing the need for lawyers to adapt to changing market demands and embrace new business models to remain competitive.

John Chisholm is a "recovered lawyer" who has been advocating for alternatives to the billable hour model in the legal profession. Chisholm shares his journey, starting as a third-generation lawyer who eventually left the traditional law firm system.
Chisholm explains that when he first started practicing law in the 1970s, there was no time-based billing - the firm would simply agree on a fee with the client before sending the bill. He was later tasked with implementing time tracking and hourly billing, which he didn't enjoy. Chisholm believes the billable hour model is an "artificial and bizarre way" of doing business.
After leaving law firm life, Chisholm discovered the concepts of value-based pricing and subscription models through his interactions with accountants and consultants like Ron Baker. He believes these alternative approaches are better for both lawyers and clients, fostering stronger relationships and a more collaborative culture within firms.
Chisholm is critical of the legal profession's resistance to change, arguing that lawyers have “put the performance of an individual over the performance of a firm.” He sees subscription models as a way to return to a more holistic, “cradle to grave” relationship between lawyers and clients, providing ongoing value rather than just handling transactions. Overall, Chisholm advocates for lawyers to embrace new business models that prioritize outcomes over billable hours.
