How do you delegate responsibility as a leader? Delegation is an interesting topic. 

Why? 

The tricky thing with that is that a lot of people just delegate tasks, 

like do this, do that 

A B,

and it's not about delegating responsibility.

For me, delegating responsibility is an agreement 

between you as a leader and the other person, 

so that the other person is deciding how to achieve the goal.

But you agree on the framework and then the frame this person can interact in. Together. And then this person works out how to get to the end goal. So delegating responsibility means you delegate the responsibility for the total task project, whatever it is, not just a specific task and step by step the person needs to come up how to achieve that goal.

How to build a culture of accountability as a leader? 

Accountability is one of the key things for you as a leader to take care of. First, start with yourself. You need to keep yourself accountable so that you can keep others accountable. The other part is working with the others in ways that you delegate responsibilities, which means you give them the possibilities

and resources to be able to take decisions and then keep them accountable on their decisions and the ways how they're managing other people or the stakeholders that are involved. So you keep yourself accountable and then keeping the others accountable on the goals they have set and on the agreements they have taken with you.

I think a key part of that is obviously the listening part

How do you engage the right people at the right moment. 

And then 

understand their needs and desires 

and see how you can work together with them towards the direction that is chosen, either by the company or by you.

How do you measure success as a leader? For me, it's one metric. You are developing people, not all the business metrics, yes, they're important. But if you are not developing people, you suck as a leader. So your number one metric should be, I am developing people. In the best case, you develop them upwards, outwards as a person, develop them going forward.

How do you set goals as a leader? 

I would...

if you just ask me. 

I mean, it's just the two of us. 

I would not set a goal. 

I would enable the team to set goals together 

so the team and you have the same goals. 

If you always put this measuring stick in front the 

the carrot 

called the carrot 

in front of other people.

Then you of course drive them into that direction 

and that's still okay. 

But if they develop the goals together 

with you and they own the goals.

It's way better than you just putting the goals.

How do you create a vision as a leader? We can always go into the textbook, but I don't. 

Because for me, 

leader vision is 

the same. 

Not the same, but... 

As a leader you need to set a direction, 

which is 

large corporations are often called the North Star. Um, I think that's the most important part. 

Put something out there, 

which is a very interesting goal, 

an interesting problem, 

something the team members would love to solve.

Something where everyone is excited to get towards. 

If you do that 

that will inspire them.

And then you build a vision 

and write something around it, 

and you have something nice. 

But I think that's the essence of it.

How to handle a conflict? Difficult thing for us leaders. 

Yes! 

Because we always love to take action. 

We love to jump in 

and love to solve things, 

but 

if there is a conflict 

between two team members. 

I recommend not stepping in. 

Enable them to solve it themselves. 

If you have two people 

and they solve it themselves 

as part of your team, 

this will strengthen the team.

Don't jump in and solve it for them. 

Help them to solve it themselves.

Today we talk about: 

How to communicate effectively as a leader? 

Communication is a huge messy thing 

for all of us.

But I think it comes down to a couple of things. 

Active listening. 

Be the person that steps back and listen to the other person. 

If you do this as a leader, 

you can only win. 

If you empathically

understand the other person 

and reflect what you hear, reflect what you see, 

and then talk to that person. 

From that part communication will help. 

Then 

of course, all the obvious things, 

being clear,

being transparent, 

and so on. 

But the listening part is the most effective tool 

to lead and be a good leader.

you are building a bond between you and the other person, and that will take time.

be yourself and be open and honest.

Leadership question of the day. How do you give constructive feedback? That's a difficult one for a lot of people, including me. I'm not good at that all the time. That's why I'm putting these videos out. What's important when you do constructive feedback? 

First is to do constructive feedback, not just feedback.

Constructive feedback is feedback where people can learn from, where your team members can learn from. Then be specific with the feedback you give. Explain what it is about. Explain it from your perspective. Give examples where you explain what the feedback is about, how you see it, and what's the result that's happening.

And then ask questions. Let the other person talk and open up a conversation. It's not you pushing your feedback to the other person, which is constructive, but if the other person can't accept it. You do something wrong.
