In recent times, more and more people in Japan have been traveling by bicycle.
Although the reason for traveling by bike is different for each person, such as environmental reasons, for health, or as a hobby and so on, the first reason has to be that bicycles are the most convenient form of transport.
Although bicycles are treated as “light vehicles” under the Road Traffic Act, no special license or training, for example, is required in order to ride a bicycle.
There are no restrictions on age, and cycling is up to the ability of the person.
Although bicycles are a familiar sight, in the past few years, accidents caused by bicycles, particularly incidents with pedestrians, have become a social issue.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the National Police Agency, although the number of traffic accidents has been decreasing as a whole, accidents involving a bicycle and a pedestrian have increased by around 50% in the past 10 years, and the number of fatalities has also been increasing.
In consideration of this situation, the amendment of the Road Traffic Act of June 2015 strengthened the obligation to safely operate bicycles, and violators are now subject to severe penalties.
For example, if somebody repeatedly performs dangerous actions such as cycling on the sidewalk, or cycling while using a smartphone, they must attend a safety course.
Of course, operating a bicycle while intoxicated is also an offense.
Persons aged 14 years and over are subject to the application of this law, and persons that do not take a safety course are subject to a fine of no greater than JPY 50,000.
In the 12 month period up until June 2016, approximately 15,000 people have been caught violating the law, and about half of these cases involved ignoring traffic lights.
In addition, most of the perpetrators have been in their 20s, accounting for 25% of the total.
Even though it is a simple means of transportation, bicicyles are once again being recognized as a ""vehicle"", as opp [...]

    An Interesting Proverb
Hello, everyone! This is Miki's blog.
Autumn is the most comfortable season of the year, isn't it? Today, I'd like to introduce a proverb related to autumn.
(Directly translated, it means "Don't let your wife eat autumn eggplants.") Eggplants taste great in the fall. Why shouldn't we allow wives to eat eggplants in the fall?
There is a saying that this proverb comes from a mean old mother-in-law who believed that it was a waste to let a daughter-in-law eat delicious eggplants. But there is another theory behind this proverb. It's based on a thoughtful belief that eating too much eggplants can cause one's stomach to get cold, so you shouldn't let your precious wife eat too much of it.
The first myth sounds really mean. But it is a common story for daughter-in-laws and mother-in-laws to not get along. In your family, do your mother-in-law and daughter-in-law [...]
